2025 Truist Championship Preview & Picks

78

The 2025 Truist Championship promises to be a unique and memorable stop on the PGA TOUR, as the game’s best descend on The Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course. This classic A.W. Tillinghast design—one of golf’s great architectural treasures—steps in as a one-year host, filling in for Quail Hollow Club, which will welcome the PGA Championship next week.

As the sixth Signature Event of the season, the Truist Championship brings with it a stacked field, elevated stakes, and a fresh test at a historic venue.

Let’s dive into the key pre-tournament storylines:

Pre-Tournament Storylines:

Rory McIlroy’s Dominant Run

Rory McIlroy enters this week in sensational form. He’s already racked up three victories in 2025, including a historic win at The Masters, where he joined golf’s most elite company by completing the career Grand Slam. He returns to the Truist Championship—an event he’s owned in the past with four victories, the most by any player in tournament history.

A New Venue with Historic Roots

This year’s Truist Championship marks a rare shift in scenery. Normally contested at Quail Hollow, the tournament heads to Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course—a storied layout and former host of elite amateur events. With no prior PGA TOUR history at the course, it presents an exciting unknown and a fresh challenge for the field.

Course/ Tournament History:

The Wissahickon Course at the Philadelphia Cricket Club is one of the crown jewels of American golf architecture. Designed by the legendary A.W. Tillinghast and opened in 1922, the course embodies the strategic depth, bold bunkering, and natural land movement that defined the Golden Age of golf course design. As part of the oldest country club in the United States—established in 1854—Wissahickon carries deep historical significance, not just for the region, but for the game itself.

In 2013, the course underwent a highly anticipated and transformative restoration under architect Keith Foster. The goal was to faithfully return Tillinghast’s original vision while preparing the course for modern play. The changes were extensive: significant tree removal to restore original sightlines, bunker renovations to revive their classic shapes and strategic relevance, reclaimed green surfaces, new tee placements to accommodate current distances, and the reinstallation of iconic features like the “Great Hazard” on the par-5 4th hole. The result was a masterful blend of preservation and progress, striking a balance between historical authenticity and modern challenge.

The restoration received widespread acclaim and was named Golf.com’s “Best Restoration of the Year” in 2014. Today, Wissahickon stands as a premier example of classic course revival—rich in character, architecturally pure, and fully capable of testing the game’s best.

The Truist Championship is a premier PGA Tour event with a rich and evolving history. Originally launched in 2003 as the Wachovia Championship, the tournament has also been known as the Quail Hollow Championship and the Wells Fargo Championship. In 2025, it was rebranded as the Truist Championship following a new title sponsorship agreement with Truist Financial Corporation. Traditionally played at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, the event has become a fixture on the PGA Tour, consistently attracting the game’s top players and delivering dramatic finishes.

In 2025, the tournament made a rare venue change, moving to the Wissahickon Course at the historic Philadelphia Cricket Club. This one-time shift was due to Quail Hollow hosting the PGA Championship that year. The Wissahickon Course, a restored A.W. Tillinghast design, offered a classic challenge and a distinct change of pace for the field. As one of the Tour’s eight Signature Events, the Truist Championship features a 72-player, no-cut field and a $20 million purse, underscoring its prestige and competitive importance. The event is scheduled to return to Quail Hollow in 2026.

Course Guide/ Scorecard:

Originally designed by A.W. Tillinghast in 1922, the Wissahickon Course at The Philadelphia Cricket Club is a classic Par 70 layout featuring four par 3s, twelve par 4s, and two par 5s. This year, the PGA TOUR utilizes an adjusted routing that begins on the club’s traditional 8th hole and proceeds through an altered sequence (No. 9–7 serve as holes 2–18 for the tournament).

Par 3s (4 Total | Range: 122–240 Yards)

Hole 14 (Wissahickon No. 3) – 122 Yards
A short wedge is all that’s needed on this short par 3 but miss this raised narrow green and you’ll likely find yourself in one of the surrounding bunkers sitting well below the putting surface.

Hole 16 (Wissahickon No. 5) – 215 Yards
This long par 3 has it all: water, bunkers, a long carry, a tricky green and devious pin placements. Gauge the wind carefully before selecting a club to carry Wissahickon Creek but fall short of three back bunkers.

Par 4s (12 Total | Most Range Between 400–450 Yards)

Hole 11 (Wissahickon No. 18) – 487 Yards

Avoid the left bunkers and aim for the right side of the fairway on this long dogleg left par 4. (Most players lay up short of Wissahickon Creek to follow errant tee shots.) Club down on your downhill approach back toward the clubhouse to a narrow green guarded by both bunkers and onlooking members.

Hole 18 (Wissahickon No. 7) – 435 Yards

NLanding your drive in the fairway should take a vast expanse of bunkers that cross the fairway – the “Great Hazard” – out of play on your second shot. Longer hitters need to carry front greenside bunkers to give themselves an eagle putt.

Par 5s (2 Total)

Hole 5 (Wissahickon No. 12) – 546 Yards

Aim left of the trees guarding the right side of the fairway on your semi-blind tee shot on this par 5 and you may find a speed slot, but more than likely, this is a three shot hole. Stay below the hole on this green that slopes from back to front.

Hole 15 (Wissahickon No. 4) – 553 Yards

Bunkers and large oak trees guard the left and right sides of the fairway, and even a long drive on this short par 5 may leave you with a hybrid/long iron into a very well-protected green. Tillinghast’s version of church pew bunkers makes this into-the-wind approach even more visually intimidating.

Key Statistics:

The 2025 Truist Championship takes place at the Philadelphia Cricket Club’s Wissahickon Course, a classic A.W. Tillinghast design hosting a PGA TOUR event for the very first time.

Since there’s no previous TOUR data at this venue, we’re leaning on course characteristics and profile-based trends to identify the key stats that should play a crucial role this week:

Strokes Gained: Off The Tee

  • While Wissahickon isn’t the most punishing course off the tee, it still rewards players who combine distance and control. The fairways are fairly generous, encouraging aggressive tee shots—particularly for longer hitters who can turn shorter holes into scoring chances. But don’t overlook accuracy: water hazards and tricky angles on approach shots make smart positioning off the tee equally important.
    • Leaders in this category in the last 24 Rounds:

      • Taylor Pendrith
      • Collin Morikawa
      • Patrick Cantlay
      • Tony Finau
      • Aaron Rai

Strokes Gained: Approach

  • As always, precision into greens will be a key differentiator. Wissahickon features elevated and well-protected green complexes that demand precise iron play. Players who can dial in their distances—especially from key wedge ranges—will set themselves up for scoring chances.
    • Leaders in this category in the last 24 Rounds:

      • Patrick Cantlay
      • Tom Hoge
      • Justin Thomas
      • Will Zalatoris

Strokes Gained: Around the Green

  • Wissahickon’s greens average just 5,779 sq. ft.—smaller than PGA TOUR average—meaning missed greens will be common. Solid scrambling and creativity around the greens will be vital, particularly on tightly mown run-offs and bunkers guarding front pins.
    • Leaders in this category in the last 24 Rounds:

      • Christiaan Bezuidenhout
      • Rory McIlroy
      • Russell Henley

Strokes Gained: Putting (Bentgrass) – Firm

  • The A1/A4 bentgrass greens are expected to run fast—one of the course’s primary defenses. Putting on speedy surfaces demands precision, especially with the classic sloping contours that Tillinghast is known for. Green reading and distance control will be tested throughout the week.

Par 5 Scoring

  • There are only two par 5s this week—No. 5 and No. 15—and both are reachable in two for most of the field. In a low-birdie environment, converting these opportunities will be essential. Expect the leaderboard to reflect who capitalizes here.

      • Matt Fitzpatrick

Proximity Gained: 100-150 Yards

  • Based on the course’s layout and overall yardage distribution, a significant percentage of approach shots will come from the 100–150 yard range. Players who excel with wedges and short irons will have the advantage—especially given the complexity of the greens.
    • Leaders in Proximity Gained 100-125 Yards in the last 24 Rounds:
