NMSU opens their 2023 campaign vs the Minutemen of UMass. The Aggies are fresh off their 2nd bowl win since 1960, finishing the season with a record of 7-6. Now, 7 wins might not sound like a lot to some, but it’s a feat they have only been able to accomplish twice since 1967. Needless to say, it’s a big deal to them. Hope and excitement are in the air around this school for the first time in a long time. Starting the season at home on national TV gives these kids even more reason to be ready to roll Saturday night. What I found even more incredible; this was Jerry Kill’s 1st season as Head Coach making an immediate impact on his arrival. Now they’re in season #2 with Kill as the head coach and getting virtually everyone back offensively. Including their top 2 WR’s David and Brady, but more importantly senior QB Diego Pavia. Who plays with a chip on his shoulder and that’s the way he likes it. This is his team, his chance to shine! He is undoubtedly the starting QB this season and has weapons. His dual threat ability makes it very difficult to defend. He runs the spread option as good anyone right now outside of the Power 5 conferences. The Aggies finished 2022 on a 6-1 run with Pavia at the helm, including they’re bowl win versus Bowling Green and beating in-state rival New Mexico at home as 7-point dogs! The lone loss was to an SEC squad. In the 6 wins they averaged 210 passing yards per game, again might not sound like many to most, but the first half of 2022 they struggled to eclipse 100 yards in the air. Pavia gained confidence and poise through their win streak and will look to continue this in 2023! Now defensively they were great last year, and yes, they most certainly lost some seniors. The good news is 4 of their 6 defensive three-star transfers last year are now ready to step into the starting role. Let’s back the Aggies Saturday night to kick off our 2023 NCAAF season!
