The Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays kick off a 4-game set tonight at Tropicana Field. Right-hander Nick Pivetta will take the mound for the BoSox. He is 9-6 with a 4.57 ERA and 1.31 WHIP over 130 innings pitched on the year. Pivetta owns a 3.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, .264 BABIP and 4.27 xFIP on the road this season. Since the break, Pivetta has been less effective pitching to a 5.35 ERA, 1.40 WHIP and 4.81 xFIP. Rookie right-hander Luis Patino will get the nod for the Rays. He enters with a 3-3 record and a 4.53 ERA and 1.24 WHIP across 51.2 innings pitched this season. At home this year, Patino owns a 2.10 ERA and 0.94 WHIP but has a very concerning .203 BABIP and 4.85 xFIP. Additionally, like Pivetta, he has struggled a bit in the second half while posting a 1.34 WHIP, .238 BABIP and a very high 5.56 xFIP. Offensively, these are two of the best teams in baseball ranking 1st and 3rd in runs scored this season. Both ballclubs also rank in the upper 3rd of the league in homeruns, runs scored, slugging, OPS, ISO, wOBA and wRC+ against right-handed pitching this year. Additionally, Boston and Tampa have continued to hit well and rank 1st and 2nd in wRC+ versus righties over the past month. Tampa Bay’s bullpen has been one of the best in the league this season but over the past month they have posted a very lucky .222 BABIP and 4.50 xFIP. That could be exposed tonight. Then there’s Boston’s pen. They have earned the leagues worst WHIP (1.63) while teams are hitting .273 in the past 30 days against them. Spells runs to me. Take Over 8.5 runs
