NHL Preview & Picks – December 13th, 2022

311

We have twelve games taking place across the NHL tonight. Some of the matchups include  DAL/NJD, NYI/ BOS, SEA/ TBL, CAR/DET, and VGK/WPG. I break down a few of the games and offer my best bets along with a few player props to take a look at.

Game Previews:

Dallas Stars @ New Jersey Devils

  • Time: 7:00 PM ET
  • Dallas Stars: 16-8-5, 2nd Central (7-5-2 Away)
  • New Jersey Devils: 21-5-2, 1st Metropolitan (10-4-1 Home)
Team Opening ML Current ML Spread Total
Dallas Stars +130 +140 +1.5 (-175) o6.5 (-105)
New Jersey Devils -150 -165 -1.5 (+150) u6.5 (-115)

Despite a promising start to the season under new head coach Peter DeBoer, the Stars are in a slump losing three of their last four games. Jake Oettinger has not been great during that span averaging 3 goals against in those four starts. They began a five-game road last night in Pittsburgh where they lost 2-1 on a last-minute Evgeni Malkin goal.

The Devils have now lost back-to-back games for the first time since the beginning of the season. Their 11-game road win streak came to an end at MSG last night blowing a two-goal lead against the Rangers. Vanecek has been lackluster in his past two starts allowing four goals in each game. New Jersey’s offense hasn’t slowed down but they’ll need to find a way to sure up things on the back end moving forward.

DAL: S. Wedgewood (5-4-2), 3.05 GAA, .908 SV%

NJD: A. Schmid (5-1-0), 1.70 GAA, .940 SV%

New York Islanders @ Boston Bruins

  • Time: 7:00 PM ET
  • New York Islanders: 17-12-0, 5th Metropolitan (8-6-0 Away)
  • Boston Bruins: 22-4-1, 1st Atlantic (14-0-1 Home)
Team Opening ML Current ML Spread Total
New York Islanders +185 +215 +1.5 (-130) o6.0 (+100)
Boston Bruins -215 -255 -1.5 +110) u6.0 (-120)

The Islanders are coming off a shutout loss against the Hurricanes on Saturday. However, it was a tough spot for them as they did face off against New Jersey the night before. New York went on a tear to end November but has failed to find that same consistency as of late.

The Bruins got revenge on the Golden Knights after they handed Boston their first loss on home ice this season. Boston returns from their three-game road trip tonight after going 2-1. Oddly enough their only loss during that span was in Arizona. This team has been phenomenal at home with a 14-0-1 record and has shown no signs of slowing down.

NYI: S. Varlamov (7-3-0), 2.67 GAA, .916 SV% [CONFIRMED]

BOS: J. Swayman (5-3-1), 2.80 GAA, .887 SV%

Seattle Kraken @ Tampa Bay Lightning

  • Time: 7:00 PM ET
  • Seattle Kraken: 16-8-3, 2nd Pacific (9-2-1 Away)
  • Tampa Bay Lightning: 17-9-1, 3rd Atlantic (10-4-1 Home)
Team Opening ML Current ML Spread Total
Seattle Kraken +160 +165 +1.5 (-145) o6.5 (+100)
Tampa Bay Lightning -190 -195 -1.5 (+125) u6.5 (-120)

The Kraken have been one of the more surprising teams this season. Last year, they were one of the worst teams on the road but have a 9-2-1 record this year. They ended their four-game losing streak against the Panthers in their last matchup. Seattle will play its third consecutive game on the road with their travel concluding in Carolina on Thursday.

After a mediocre start to the season, Tampa Bay has got its groove back. They’ve won four of their last five outscoring opponents 19-11 during that span. Tampa Bay has also been great at home this season with a 10-4-1 record. The Bolts Power Play has also found a spark scoring in eight of their last ten games.

SEA: P. Grubauer (2-3-1), 3.21 GAA, .882 SV% [CONFIRMED]

TBL: A. Vasilevskiy (11-8-1), 2.66 GAA, .911 SV%

Vegas Golden Knights @ Winnipeg Jets

  • Time: 9:00 PM ET
  • Vegas Golden Knights: 20-9-1, 1st Pacific (12-2-1 Away)
  • Winnipeg Jets: 18-8-1, 1st Central (10-4-0 Home)
Team Opening ML Current ML Spread Total
Vegas G. Knights +105 +125 +1.5 (-200) o6.0 (-110)
Winnipeg Jets -125 -145 -1.5 (+170) u6.0 (-110)

These two teams have already squared off twice this year with Vegas winning both matchups. On October 20th, the Golden Knights won 5-2 and just ten days later they defeated the Jets again 2-1 in OT.

After a great start to the year, the Golden Knights have gone 5-5 in their last ten games. Their offense has struggled as of late only scoring four goals in their previous three games. Logan Thompson has also been subpar allowing three or more goals in each of his past four starts.

The Winnipeg Jets four game win streak came to an end in Washington on Sunday. Even with that loss, they’ve won seven of their last ten games. They’ve been great at home this season with a 10-4-0 record. Connor Hellebuyck has had a rebound year with a +15.1 GSAx (Goals Saved Above Expected) ranking 2nd in the NHL.

VGK: L. Thompson (13-7-0), 2.70 GAA, .917 SV%

WPG: C. Hellebuyck (14-6-1), 2.33 GAA, .930 SV%

Pick(s):

  • Winnipeg Jets ml (-130) – DraftKings [Current Best (-140) – BetMGM]
    • Risk 0.32 to win 0.25 Units

The Jets lost twice to Vegas earlier in the season on the road but they’ve looked much better as of late. Vegas is in a bit of a skid now and continues to be riddled with injuries. In terms of numbers, Winnipeg has been much better at home this season and should be able to defeat this depleted Golden Knights squad. It looks as though it’ll be Hill vs Hellebuyck in net tonight which certainly gives the advantage to Winnipeg there as well.

  • Washington Capitals in Regulation (-135) – DraftKings
    • Risk 0.34 to win 0.25 Units

While Washington hasn’t been great on the road this year, the Blackhawks haven’t been great at home either. The Capitals have found their groove winning their past four games and are playing some great hockey as of late. Chicago on the other hand, has lost their past three games being shut out in two of those matchups. Washington allows the 11th fewest goals against per game and should be able to limit this stagnant Blackhawks offensive unit.

  • Seattle Kraken/ Tampa Bay Lightning over 6.0 (-120) – Caesars
    • Risk 0.30 to win 0.25 Units

Lean(s):

  • Columbus Blue Jackets/ Florida Panthers over 6.5 (-130) – DraftKings
  • Arizona Coyotes (+155) – DraftKings
