NHL Preview & Picks – May 13, 2021

Tonight’s NHL slate features 3 games in three different divisions. However, we only have one game that has any implications on the playoffs which is the Avalanche vs the Kings. The playoffs start this Saturday in the East Division when the Boston Bruins take on the Washington Capitals. Lets take a look at the games today and breakdown some matchups.

Canucks (+150) @ Calgary Flames (-170)

The Canucks have had a disappointing season to say the least which included a major Covid-19 pause where the majority of their team caught the virus. They’re entering this game dropping two of their last three and eight of their last ten. The Flames haven’t exactly been playing great hockey either entering this game five and five in their last ten games.

The Canucks have Demko in net tonight who is 1-2-1 vs Calgary this season with a 3.09 GAA in those games. The Flames are starting Markstrom who’s 4-2 against Vancouver this year giving up an average of 2.25 goals in those matchups.

The Flames have caught the better of the Canucks this season leading the series 4-2 in the six games they’ve played against each other. In terms of the total (5.5), the under is trending for both teams but with nothing to play for besides pride I’m going to stay away from that since I don’t really see any value there. However, I do think there’s some value to the Flames ml in this matchup given Vancouver’s struggles on the road this year and the goalie matchup.

Pick: Calgary Flames -170 (Risk 1.70 Units)

Los Angeles Kings (+337) @ Colorado Avalanche (-422)

The Avalanche take on the Kings in each teams final game of the season with Colorado only having something to play for. The Av’s can lock up the Presidents trophy and clinch home ice advantage for the playoffs tonight. They defeated the Kings last night by a score of 6-0.

There’s no doubt the Avalanche are the better team, it’s now so deciding if there is any value in the number that’s offered tonight. I don’t see any value even in the puck line if Johansson starts, so its a stay away game for me.

No Pick

Year to Date Record: 2-5 (-3.70 Units)
