Last week at the Black Desert Championship, Lucas Glover came close to an outright win, finishing T3. We hit one of our two Top 20 bets with Beau Hossler (+130), while our other T20 pick, Harry Hall (+200), struggled during the back nine in the final round. Hall was in great shape until a five-over stretch from Holes 10-13 knocked him out of contention.

Matt McCarty Claims First Victory in Inaugural Event

In just his second start as a PGA TOUR member, Matt McCarty secured his first victory at the inaugural Black Desert Championship on Sunday. This marks only the third career start for McCarty, and with the win, he earns exemptions into prestigious 2025 tournaments, including The Sentry, the Masters, and the PGA Championship. Having led the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour points list, McCarty had already locked in spots at THE PLAYERS Championship and the U.S. Open.

Tom Kim Aims for Historic Three-Peat

Tom Kim has his sights set on becoming just the seventh golfer in PGA TOUR history to win the same tournament three consecutive years. The last to achieve this feat was Steve Stricker from 2009-2011. Although Kim initially planned to take a break during the fall events after a grueling regular season, he’s making an exception for this week’s Shriners Children’s Open—a promise he made after his 2023 victory.

The Shriners Children’s Open, hosted at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada, is the fourth event in the FedExCup Fall series. This series of eight tournaments, held after the TOUR Championship, plays a crucial role in shaping player eligibility for the 2025 PGA TOUR season.

At the end of the FedExCup Fall, those that rank from 126-150 on the final FedExCup Fall Points List will have conditional status for the 2024 PGA TOUR Season.

Course/ Tournament History:

The Shriners Children’s Open, held annually at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas, is one of the most storied events on the PGA TOUR, with roots dating back to 1983. Originally known as the Las Vegas Invitational, it has evolved into a pivotal part of the TOUR’s fall schedule. It was one of the first tournaments to offer a million-dollar purse and has crowned many notable champions, including Tiger Woods, who earned his first professional win here in 1996. In 2010, the event adopted its current name when Shriners Hospitals for Children became the title sponsor, solidifying the tournament’s charitable mission. That same year, TPC Summerlin became the permanent host, though the event has always remained in the Las Vegas area.

TPC Summerlin opened in 1991 and was originally designed by Booby Wood Throughout the years it’s undergone several minor renovations and in 2021, the greens and fairways were completely replaced. The previous greens were A1/A4 bentgrass and the fairways were 419 bermudagrass. Two years ago, the greens were changed to Dominator bentgrass, and the fairways were changed to Bandera bermudagrass. Looking at the upcoming PGA Tour schedule, this is the only course that features this unique type of putting surface. Other courses have pure bentgrass greens but none that feature this specific seed of bentgrass.

Course Guide/ Scorecard:

Designed by Bobby Weed with input from Fuzzy Zoeller, TPC Summerlin is a Par 71 layout that spans 7,255 yards, making it shorter than many other PGA TOUR venues. The course includes four Par 3s, eleven Par 4s, and three Par 5s, where players must capitalize on scoring opportunities to contend for the title. Its resort-style design offers a relatively open layout, enabling longer hitters to take aggressive approaches. However, past winners demonstrate that accuracy off the tee often outweighs pure distance. With a history of lower scoring averages, TPC Summerlin is considered one of the easier courses on TOUR, and we can expect another winner to finish around -20 or better.

The four Par 3’s range from 168 to 239 yards. Last year, hole No. 14 was the only par 3 to have a scoring average under par.

No. 17, 196 yards, Par 3: “A challenging and unnerving par-3 plays from 180 to 210 yards downhill, depending on the hole location, with the green guarded closely by a lake on the left and by bunkers on the right. Par is a good score and birdies are rare, should players need to make up ground.”

There are eleven Par 4’s at TPC Summerlin with the majority (seven) of those holes ranging between 400 and 450 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest Par 4 last year was No. 3 (+0.212).

No. 15, 341 yards, Par 4: “A short, drivable par-4 measuring 320 yards, which most players will attempt to reach with their tee shot. If the tee shot misses the green, an “up and down” birdie is possible, but not easy, due to the severely elevated and undulated green – which is surrounded by five bunkers that regularly attract stray tee shots.”

No. 18, 444 yards, Par 4: “A well-designed and strategic finishing hole measuring 450 yards which moves right to left off the tee. The green is protected on the left by a lake, with the hole protected by the water. An aggressive tee shot with the driver can leave the player just a short iron to a very deep green from front to back. An aggressive tee shot and second shot could lead to a one-putt birdie. Find the water and you will be lucky to make bogey.”

There are three Par 5’s on the course, No. 9, No. 13, and No. 16. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2023. No. 9 was the easiest par 5 on the course last year with a scoring average of 0.592 below par. Hole No. 13, was the toughest Par 5 last year due to it being the only Par 5 that measures over 600 yards.

No. 16, 560 yards, Par 5: “A relatively downhill par-5 that is reachable with two good shots. The green is guarded by water short of the green, and bunkers beyond. For scratch golfers and TOUR players, only a mid-iron will be necessary for the second shot, with a birdie almost a certainty. The scoring swings will come with balls in the water as well as aggressive second shots hit close to the pin.”

Tom Kim (+1200) is looking to defend his title at the Shriners Children’s Open after winning it in consecutive years. In his last start at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, he finished T50. Prior to that, he placed 8th at the Olympics but missed the cut at The Open Championship.

Taylor Pendrith (+2200) ended the season strong, finishing inside the top 15 in four of his last five events. He also achieved his first PGA TOUR victory in May at THE CJ CUP Byron Nelson. Pendrith will compete in the Shriners Children’s Open for the fourth time, with his best finish of T3 coming last year.

Davis Thompson (+2500) will make his third appearance at TPC Summerlin, where he previously finished T35 in 2023 and T12 in 2022. He secured his fourth career PGA TOUR victory at the John Deere Classic in July but has only managed to finish inside the top 20 once in his last five starts.

Pendrith has been fantastic lately, finishing inside the top 15 in four of his last five PGA TOUR starts. The only outlier was a T22 finish at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. After early-season struggles with his iron play, he’s turned it around, gaining strokes on approach in his last five starts.

This will be his sixth appearance in this tournament with his best finish coming last year where he finished T3, two shots behind the winner Tom Kim.

This will be his third appearance at TPC Summerlin, where he previously finished T35 in 2023 and T12 in 2022. Thompson also played well at TPC Scottsdale earlier in the season placing T15, a comp course for this week’s venue.

Eric Cole has yet to win his first PGA Tour event but based on his recent form, he’s right around the corner. In his last five started, Cole has finished inside the top 20 three times. Two weeks ago at the Sanderson Farms Championship, he finished T16 ranking 1st amongst the field in SG: Approach.

This will be his third appearance at TPC Summerlin, where he previously finished T3 in 2023 and missed the cut in 2022. In the last editon of this event Cole struggled in the first round but manged to finsh strong posting a final round of 62. In that event he ranked 2nd in SG: Around the Green, 4th in SG: Approach, 1st in SG: Tee to Green. The only downside was his putting where he ranked 52nd amongst the field. However, Cole has been much better on the green as of late gaining strokes putting in eight of his last ten starts.

Amongst the field in the last 24 rounds he ranks 9th in SG: Approach, 13th in SG: Tee to Green, 20th in SG: Putting (Bentgrass), and 29th in SG: Around the Green.

• Cameron Davis (+4000) – DraftKings

Cameron Davis will make his first start since August where he finished T5 at the BMW Championship. He won his second PGA TOUR event earleir this year at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

This will be his sixth appearance in this tournament with his best finish coming last year where he finished T7. Despite only having one finish inside the top 10 at this event, Davis has never missed the cut at TPC Summerlin.

Amongst the field in the last 24 rounds he ranks 55th in SG: Approach, 7th in SG: Tee to Green, 3rd in SG: Around the Green, and 2nd in Birdies or Better.

• Seamus Power (+135) – DraftKings
  • Risk 1.00 to win 1.35 Units

Seamus Power has yet to miss a cut in his last nine professional starts. He comes into the Shriners in great formhaving finished T11 (Black Desert Championship), T11 (Sanderson Farms Championship), and T10 (FedEx St. Jude Championship) in his last three starts on the PGA TOUR.

This will be his sixth appearance in this tournament with his best finish coming back in 2021 where he placed T21. Despite only not having placed in the top 20 before at this event, this is the best he’s played heading into the tournament compared to his previous appearances at TPC Summerlin.

Amongst the field in the last 24 rounds he ranks 22nd in SG: Off the Tee, 39th in SG: Approach, 21st in SG: Tee to Green, and 38th in Birdies or Better Gained.

• Harry Hall (+175) – DraftKings
  • Risk 1.00 to win 1.75 Units

Harry Hall won his first PGA TOUR event earleir this year at the ISCO Championship. Last week at the Black Desert Championship he finished T35. Prior to that, he played over in Europe on the DPWT for three events where he registered two top 20 finishes.

This will be his fourth appearance in this tournament having finished T26 in 2023, T15 in 2022, and T8 in 2021.

Amongst the field in the last 24 rounds he ranks 31st in SG: Approach, 12th in SG: Tee to Green, 2nd in SG: Around the Green, 2nd in SG: Putting (Bentgrass) and 3rd in Birdies or Better Gained. His lone win this season came at Keene Trace Golf Club which also features Bentgrass greens.
