The Padres continue their road trip through the doormats of the NL Central today when they open a three game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. They are coming off a sweep of the Reds where they put up a solid 24 runs in the 3 game set. The Pirates on the other hand were just swept at the hands of the Brewers.
On the mound today for San Diego is Yu Darvish. So far in the early season, as is his normal, the Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde routine has come to play. He opened the season with 6 No Hit innings against the Diamondbacks and then gave up 9 runs in an inning and two-thirds vs the Giants. His last two starts have been stellar as he gave up one earned run over 12+ innings vs the Braves and the Dodgers. If his control is on and he is hitting his spots he is as unhittable as anyone in the league. Zach Thompson is on the hill for the Pirates. He doesn’t miss a ton of bats, and gives up a lot of hard contact. He needs to induce ground balls to be effective, and while he did do that in the minors it has not translated to the major league level yet. He finished last year with a 3.24 ERA in Miami, but with a 4.65 xFip. His first start this year against the Cubs was decent in really cold weather, but his last two vs the Brewers and the Cubs have gone for 6 IP 15 Hits and 10 ER allowed. His last start was the 21-0 Three Touchdown shutout by the Cubs.
The Padres offense has been clicking as they are 5th in MLB in runs scored. Manny Machado has been on absolute fire with an OPS of 1.070. He’s been the second most valuable offensive player so far on the young season (Anthony Rizzo was built for that short porch in the Bronx) and is keeping the Padres offense rocking even without Tatis in the lineup. The Pirates offense has been better than expected so far and is middle of the pack in OPS. That being said the best team the Pirates have played so far is the Brewers who just swept them.
For me this is classic good MLB team vs bad MLB team and the price on the run line is a value for me at around even money. The Padres are 9-1 on the Run Line against teams at the bottom of standings early on this season, and I see no reason for that trend to change tonight. Get on the Friars sinking the Pirates tonight.
Padres -1.5 +100, 1.5 Units.
