Cardinals vs Packers -5.5 O/U 47
This is an interesting game based on two things. Those two things are, the weather and the spot. According to weather.gov, this could be a pretty sloppy game as there is rain in the forecast. We also could see some wind gusts in the second half. Green Bay has been pretty good this year, but we also have to remember that they were without their quarterback Jordan Love for a few games. The Packers are a nice +.6 net yards per play while the Cardinals are at dead even. We have to wonder what that would be had Jordan Love played the full year. The Packers have a pretty solid run defense ranking 6th in opponent rush EPA if the rain and wind cause some problems. The Cardinals only rank 23th at stopping the run respectively. This also happens to be a pretty good spot for the Packers as they lost their last game at home to the Vikings, while the Cardinals are coming off of a huge division win at the 49ers thank to kicker injuries. I have this game Packers -7.5 and I think that they roll in this game.

Texas vs Oklahoma +14.5 O/U 49.5
The Red river rivalry is definitely the game of the weekend. This game is played at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas Texas, but make no mistake about it, there is no home field advantage for either team. This is a pretty massive spread here for the Longhorns and I am not sure that this is right. While Texas has a massive 3.61 net yards per play advantage, there are a few things to like about Oklahoma. First of all, both teams are coming off the bye weeks which I have to think is an advantage for Oklahoma. The Sooners won this game last year, but it remains less of a revenge spot being that Texas made the college football playoff anyways. While Oklahoma’s offense has been bad this year, they at least have had the harder schedule ranking 25th on Sagarin to Texas at 92nd. Another thing to think about is that Oklahoma still has a good defense ranking 19th in success rate and 15th in EPA. Texas great numbers on both offense and defense, but the quarterback situation here is weird. Quinn Ewers tends to choke in some big games, and he knows that over half of the fan base wants to see Arch Manning stay in as a starter. Ewers has also not played football in a month which may hurt if he is the starter. Archie Manning is a bit too inexperienced to trust in a game of this caliber. I expect Oklahoma to slow this game down and ugly it up some with their rushing attack. I think that the bye week helps the Sooners here more than Texas, and they keep it within 10 points.
Oklahoma +14.5 – 2 stars
Minnesota vs UCLA +4 O/U 40
This is quite the low total for a college football game. I know that UCLA is a bad team and all, but it’s not like the Gophers are world beaters. Statistically, UCLA is terrible, but they have at least had the number 1 hard schedule according to Jeff Sagarin. This team played four ranked teams out of the five games that they have played. Minnesota’s toughest game was last week vs USC where they were out-gained and many said that they should have lost. UCLA ranks 120th in yards per play, but the Gophers rank only 98th themselves. One thing about UCLA that I do like is that last week, Justyn Martin did ok at Penn State going 22/30 with 1 touchdown and 0 interceptions. There is a real quarterback controversy now at UCLA. I could see him possibly starting this week over Ethan Garbers. Looking at this low total and the let down spot for the Gophers, I think the Bruins can keep it close or possibly win this game outright for DeShaun Foster.
We’re 24-21-1 in College Football this season. Still down a few units. Hoping this is the week we break back into the positive.
This week’s Free Play travels to Pittsburgh, PA to see the Pitt Panthers (5-0) host the California Bears (3-2) kicking off at 3:30 ET Current Lines: Pitt -3.5 Over/Under 58.5
Cal comes into this game after a heartbreaking home loss to Miami 39-38 where they blew a 20 point 4th quarter lead in a game where they hosted College Gameday for the first time. It was their second straight loss after dropping a defensive affair to Florida State on the road. Prior to that they defeated UC Davis and SDSU at home and defeated Auburn on the road.
Pitt defeated North Carolina last game on the road and also boasts a road victory over Cincinnati and home wins against Kent State, West Virginia and Youngstown State.
The Golden Bears are looking for their first win over a ranked opponent since beating #21 Oregon in 2020. Their offense has left some things to be desired. Currently managing 5.6 yards per play putting them in the middle of the D1 Pack. They are led by QB Fernando Mendoza who is completing 64.8% of his passes with 7 Touchdowns and 3 Interceptions. He’s averaging 8.1 Yards per attempt. The receiving core has seen a few injuries and doesn’t feature any real stars. They have nine players with at least eight receptions, but no one man has topped 15 catches yet on the season. Javian Thomas has led them on the ground with 6.4 YPC on 45 attempts. Pre-season All-American candidate RB Jadyn Ott has struggled to stay on the field with a bothersome ankle injury.
The Pitt offense on the other hand has seen high levels of success. They are 9th in yards per game in D1, and 7th overall in passing averaging over 337 yards per game through the air. Redshirt Freshman and Alabama transfer QB Eli Holstein has emerged completing 65.7 percent of his passes for 15 Touchdowns to only 3 Interceptions. He is at 9.1 Yards per attempt. Pitt has six different receivers with at least 14 catches and Holstein has done a great job of spreading the ball around the field and pushing it down past the markers as well. Running back Desmond Reid leads the backfield with 62 carries averaging 6.0 YPC.
The Cal defense has been the strength of their team so far holding opponents to 18.0 points allowed and 355 yards per game. They lead the nation in interceptions with 11 and they will need to be at their best to slow down this Pitt offense,
Pittsburgh has allowed 360 yards per game, and has yet to hold a D1 Opponent under 24 points per game. Cal isn’t as complete an offense as any of Pitts other opponents with the exception of Kent State.
The Analysis:
I think the Cal secondary is the strength of this team, and while they gave up some big plays to Miami in the 4th quarter last week they have been fairly well disciplined and well coached bu Justin Wilcox. They should present the biggest challenge so far for Holstein and offensive coordinator Kade Bell. While I don’t think they will slow them down completely I believe Wilcox will have plenty of surprises for Pitt much like he did early against Miami.
Pitts defense has excelled in getting opponents in difficult situations. They have turned that early down success into third down defensive efficiency with the 13th best D1 third down conversion percentage allowed at 29.5%. Cal’s offense hasn’t shown the ability to move the ball effectively in long drives. Against Miami two of their scores were on long pass plays and another on a Pick 6. Take away the two pass defense breakdowns and they wouldn’t have cracked 300 yards against Miami.
I expect Pitts offense to struggle more than usual and Cal to continue finding difficulty sustaining drives against this Pat Narduzzi defense. With the total sitting at 58.5 I am placing a bet on the under and believe it will be a lower scoring affair in Pittsburgh.
This should be a fun game in the fun belt. This total shows a lot of scoring may happen. Both teams here rank in the top 24 in pace of play. The big thing here is the spread as the Bobcats have a large one here to cover. This game may constitute a revenge spot for Texas State as they were beaten 77-31 here in 2023. My question is, how many points are we giving for revenge. As bad as Arkansas State has played at -1.88 yards per play, this team at least played Iowa State and Michigan. Their strength of schedule ranks 70th on Sagarin. Texas State on the other hand had their hardest game at home against Arizona State. Their schedule ranks a measly 112th respectively. Even with this being a revenge spot, somehow Texas State tends to throw up on themselves. There must be something that Butch Jones knows that enables his team to score against the bobcats. My power ratings has this a a 9 point favorite for Texas State. If we adjust for extra rest and revenge, we maybe get to 12 or 13. The total tells us that both teams are going to score. I am taking the Red Raiders and I feel that the back door is wide open.
