Luke Clanton
Luke Clanton, the top-ranked amateur golfer, is back on the PGA TOUR after an impressive summer. Over the past three months, Clanton secured three top-10 finishes in six starts, including a tie for second at the John Deere Classic and a solo fifth at the Wyndham Championship. His performance has earned him 14 points in the PGA TOUR University Accelerated program, which awards TOUR cards to college golfers based on their achievements. If Clanton earns six more points before the end of the college golf season next spring, he will be eligible for PGA TOUR membership starting in the summer of 2025.

The Procore Championship, formerly known as the Fortinet Championship and Safeway Open, is a PGA Tour event that takes place annually in Napa, California. Established in 2007 as the Fry’s Electronics Open, the tournament has undergone several name changes due to sponsorship shifts. The event is hosted at the Silverado Resort and Spa, a picturesque venue known for its scenic yet challenging North Course.
In its early years, the tournament moved between various venues before settling at Silverado in 2014. The tournament typically serves as the season-opening event for the PGA Tour’s wraparound schedule, meaning it’s the first official event of the new season. Notable winners include major champions such as Stewart Cink and Jimmy Walker. More recently, Max Homa has captured back-to-back victories in 2021 and 2022, solidifying his presence on the tour. Last season Sahith Theegala won his first PGA Tour event at this tournament.
The Silverado Resort and Spa, particularly its North Course, is a historic and renowned golf destination located in Napa Valley, California. The resort was originally established in the 1870s as a private estate before being transformed into a resort in the 1960s. The golf course itself was originally designed by Ben Harmon in 1955. In 1966, Robert Trent Jones Jr. completed the course’s first renovation laying the foundation for what would become a premier golf destination in Napa Valley.
In 2011, the resort underwent significant renovations led by Johnny Miller, a former PGA Tour player and World Golf Hall of Famer. Miller made strategic updates to the North Course, enhancing its playability while maintaining its classic design. His changes included reshaping greens and bunkers and improving course conditions, elevating Silverado’s reputation as a premier golf destination.
Since 2014, the North Course has become the long-term host of the Procore Championship (previously the Fortinet Championship), serving as a challenging venue for PGA Tour players with its narrow fairways, large trees, and elevated greens. The course has been praised for its beauty and technical demands, making it a favorite among professionals and amateurs alike. Course Guide/ Scorecard:
Originally crafted by Ben Harmon in 1955, the North Course at Silverado Resort features a Par 72 layout, comprising four Par 3s, ten Par 4s, and four Par 5s.
The four Par 3’s range between 182 yards and 212 yards. Last year, every Par 3 had a scoring average over par.
No. 7, 212 Yards, Par 3: The longest par 3 on the North Course will require an accurate shot. Avoiding both bunkers is a must, this hole plays slightly longer and at times plays through a crosswind.
No. 11, 189 Yards, Par 3: This challenging par 3. Hitting with the wrong club may cost players a penalty stroke and missing left of the green will leave players with a nearly impossible up and down. Par is a fantastic score on this very tough hole.
No. 17, 182 Yards, Par 3: This beautiful short par 3 over water is the signature hole on the North Course. Although short, this hole has many difficult pin locations, par on this hole is a good score.
There are ten Par 4’s on the North Course at Silverado Resort. No. 14 is the shortest Par 4 listed at 360 yards with the longest being No. 9, playing 458 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest Par 4 on the course last year was No. 9 (+0.116).
No. 3, 424 Yards, Par 4: One of the most difficult tee shots on the front nine, players tee shots on this dogleg left must avoid the large oak trees to give themselves an opening to this green. Player’s approach shots will determine their score here, as the green slopes considerably from left to right. If players leave themselves above the hole, they will have a challenging two-putt ahead.
No. 14, 360 Yards, Par 4: Position off this tee is crucial for players’ approach shots. With a water hazard right and out-of-bounds left, medium to long hitters will generally use a fairway wood from the tee for more accuracy. If they find the fairway, they will likely have a short iron to the green. This green slopes from back to front, one of the toughest greens on the course.
There are four Par 5’s on the North Course at Silverado Resort, No. 5, No. 12, No. 15 & No. 18. They all played under par in 2023, with the easiest hole on the course being No. 5 with a scoring average of 4.66.
No. 12, 571 Yards, Par 5: Players will want to keep their drive right on this straightaway par 5 as a water hazard runs down the entire hole on the left side. A comfortable layup to the left center of the fairway should present them with a good angle and a short iron into this green. This green slopes gently from right to left.
No. 15, 557 Yards, Par 5: This elevated tee gives players the green light for a big drive. A well-placed tee shot that turns from right to left will put them in the best position. This leaves players with a comfortable yardage in the fairway, as this green is slightly elevated, narrow, and protected by a large bunker. If their distance control is right, they will have a putt for birdie, if not, they’ll need a good short game to get up and down.
No. 18, 575 Yards, Par 5: This finishing hole is the longest par 5 on the North Course. Players will want to avoid the fairway bunkers on the right off the tee as that will put them in perfect position to hit this green in regulation. Short left on your approach will make for a difficult par.

The Stanford graduate has experienced an up-and-down season but enters the Procore Championship in solid form. In his last three events, he secured a T3 finish at the 3M Open, T45 at the Wyndham Championship, and T12 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. This week will mark his seventh appearance in this event, with his best result coming in 2022 when he finished runner-up, just one stroke behind Max Homa.
McNealy’s inconsistency this season can largely be attributed to his approach play, but he’s shown recent improvement with his irons—an essential factor this week. Beyond his iron game, McNealy has excelled, particularly with his putting. He also performs well on poa annua/bentgrass greens, ranking 20th in Strokes Gained: Putting on this surface over the last 24 rounds. His driving distance should help him set up his approach shots from the 75-125 yard range, where he ranks 8th in proximity from 75-100 yards and 39th from 100-125 yards.
- J.J. Spaun (+4000) – FanDuel
- Risk 0.20 to win 8.00 Units
California native J.J. Spaun struggled early in the 2024 season, missing the cut in five of his first six events. However, he found his form at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, where he earned his first top-10 finish of the season. Since then, Spaun has been more consistent, making the cut in every event and finishing T9 at the 3M Open and T3 at the Wyndham Championship in his last two starts.
Spaun has competed in this tournament eight times, with two top-15 finishes, including a T11 last year. His game has been on the rise since Detroit, gaining strokes on approach in each of his last five starts, improving his putting in four of his last six, and gaining strokes off the tee in his last three events. His recent increase in driving distance could give him an edge at Silverado Resort.
- Brendon Todd (+4000) – FanDuel
- Risk 0.20 to win 8.00 Units
Backing Brendon Todd this week, as his current form and course history are hard to overlook. He finished T12 at the Wyndham Championship and T22 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship in his last two starts. Todd has also consistently performed well at Silverado Resort, placing T22 in 2021, T9 in 2022, and 6th last year.

Eric Cole is still searching for his first PGA Tour win, and with his recent form, he appears close to breaking through. He finished T7 at the Wyndham Championship, T18 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, and T46 at the BMW Championship in his last few starts. Having played this tournament twice before, he missed the cut in his debut but finished 4th last year.
Since his T6 finish at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, Cole’s overall game has improved, particularly in putting and approach play. He also performed well during last year’s FedExCup Fall, which could bode well for his chances this week.

Mac Meissner has been playing excellent golf recently, finishing inside the top 20 in four of his last five starts. This will be his first appearance in this tournament, but he showed promise at a comparable course earlier this season, finishing T5 at Colonial Country Club.
In the last 24 rounds, Meissner ranks 21st in Strokes Gained: Approach, 13th in Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, 12th in Birdies or Better Gained, and 24th in Par 4 Scoring on holes ranging from 400-450 yards.
- Pierceson Coody (+12000) – FanDuel

Taking a chance on Pierceson Coody this week, as his driving distance could be an advantage at Silverado Resort. Coody has shown flashes of potential this season, including a T5 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge and a T2 at the ISCO Championship. Although his approach play has been inconsistent, his ability to drive the ball long could set him up for success.

Titans vs Bears -3.5 O/U 43.5
Some say that you always take the +3.5 in a football game. I beg to differ in many spots. There is a reason a line is 3.5 and you do not have to look far to see that. The Titans have a new coach in Brian Callahan. He was an offensive coordinator at the Cincinnati Bengals. The very same Bengals team that crapped the bed last year. I am not sure if he will become a great head coach, but he certainly has work to do. Last season, the Titans were poor on offense and Will Levis was a big part of that. This team ranked 20th in pass EPA on a pretty easy schedule. Will only completed 58.4% of his passes in his 9 games with 8 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Now he has to learn a brand new offense that will involve a lot of passing. The defense should improve as this team signed some big names like Chidobe Awuzie at corner, and Sebastian Joseph at defensive tackle, but going from ranking 28th in defensive EPA last year leaves lots of room for improvement. The Bears on the other hand have a brand new high flying offense under new OC Shane Waldron. You saw some of his schemes in the pre-season, and rookie QB and number 1 draft pick Caleb Williams looks very poised. The Bears defense was quite solid last year ranking 16th in defensive EPA. Over the last eight weeks of the season, the Bears defense ranked 3rd in defensive EPA. I think that the Bears win by margin here and I will lay the points.

Mississippi State vs Arizona State -6.5 O/U 59
This should be a much more exciting game that the total is leading us on to believe. New head coach Jeff Lebby comes in to the Bulldogs after being an offensive coordinator for Oklahoma and for Lane Kiffen at Ole miss before that. Speed is what he knows, and I expect a lot of offense this year from this group. Kenny Dillingham had a rough first year at Arizona State, but his team looked pretty motivated last week against Wyoming putting up over 40 points in the first half. Even though the Sun Devils were not good last year, they still were in the top 45 in plays per game, and I expect that to increase this year. I do not expect either of these defense to be good as the Bulldogs only returned one starter from 2023, while the Sun Devils only return three starters and allowed six yards per play last year. I peg both of these teams as “over” teams for 2024 until I see something different. I see both of these teams playing very fast, and I expect a lot of points.

Bowling Green vs Penn State -34.5 O/U 48.5
There is a lot of momentum for Penn State after a nice win against West Virginia, but is Bowling Green that much of a push over for a 5 TD spread? I am not so sure. The Falcons solid team last year winning 5 of their last 6 regular season games. They only lost to Mac Champion Toledo by 1 point and did well in their bowl game vs the Gophers. This team returns 73% of their offense and 58% of their defensive production. They were a decent .2 net yards per play. Penn State is a team that definitely improved last year with a much better offensive coordinator in Andy Kotelnicki from Kansas. In saying that, I could see Penn State dogging it some this game. They literally have three weeks before they play the big 10. I think this number is also very back doorable if needed, and if Penn State comes out a bit flat. Maybe we see a Penn State 2nd string at some point. Play the Falcons

BYU vs SMU -12 O/U 56
This should be a fun friday night game between the newcomers of the Big 12 and the ACC. These are two teams that finished out quite different than each other last season. SMU was a team that ranked top 11 both offensively and defensively. They had an amazing passing game ranking 22nd in yards per attempt and 12th in sacks. They also could run the ball quite well averaging 176. Preston Stone led this team to an amazing 1.8 net yards per play. The key here for the Mustangs is that they return a ton of their talent ranking 10th in returning production at 82%. BYU on the other hand wasn’t quite so pretty. They ranked 102nd in scoring offense and 99th in scoring defense. This netted them a net negative -1 yard per play. This season, they are hoping to rebound some, but how do we know that they can do this when they lack good talent. QB Kedon Slovis is gone and Jake Retzlaff steps in where he played backup last year completing only 50% of his passes at a measly 5.2 yards per attempt. My power ratings have these teams pretty far apart this year. They also haven’t been tested, being that they played Southern Illinois. SMU did not look good against Nevada last week, but when Nevada went to Troy, the champion of the Sun belt last year and beat them outright, the spot doesn’t look quite as bad as it did. I have this game SMU -14.5. Take the favorite.
