Illinois vs UCONN -8.5 O/U 155

Don’t hate me for this please.  I know I always like to stay away from the Huskies but they just keep upping this spread and it is too hard to resist.  All you hear from the media about UCONN is that they have been beating teams by double digits over their last nine games, but why have that not mentioned the competition?  In 2023, their only impressive tournament win was vs three seed Gonzaga while all the rest of their games were against wannabee high seeded teams.  Why are we not talking about the fact that they lost to Creighton this year by double digits?   Why are we not talking about the fact that they got Marquette without their best player over the last two matchups?   How about the fact that ST Johns kept it within five?  UCONN is not as good as they were last year without Sanogo and Hawkins.  They have been suspect behind the arc, and they are facing a red hot Illinois team that is number two on offense and have been stepping up their defense since the middle of March.  I have to take the value here as Illinois has the guard play from Terrance Shannon and Marcus Domask to stay in this game and possibly even lead at halftime.  Illinois has the experience against Zach Edey that will help them slow down Donavan Clingan.   Hold your breath, plug your nose and take the Illini.

Illinois +8.5 – 1.5 stars

Duke vs Houston -4 O/U 134.5

This should be a fun game between a blue chip Blue Devil vs a Hungry Houston Cougars team.   It’s no secret that Houston had a very very dramatic game last week against A&M.  The Aggies missed a lot of free throws and really could have won that game.   Duke had it pretty getting this far vs a poor Vermont team and a ref show hurting James Madison’s best player last week.   I think that this is a completely different matchup for the Cougs this week.  A&M would viciously charge the hoop which helped the zebras blow the whistle, but this isn’t your average Greyson Allen Duke team.   The Blue Devils are more of a team that doesn’t dribble drive to the rim and I am not sure that bodes well.  Houston’s agressive defensive strength can be their weakness if you get them in foul trouble like on Sunday, but Duke may be looking to hit the three more than draw the foul.   The Cougars will have a big advantage in near proximity points ranking 11th on Haslametrics to Duke ranking 65th defending it.   Duke’s only advantage is that they can hit the three ball quite well, but I honestly do not see that happeneing with the ball pressure from guys like Jamal Shead and LJ Cryer.  If you can rough up Filipowski like Tennessee did last year, the Dukies end up crawling into a shell.   Houston’s relentless D tends to do that and we saw it happen twice against North Carolina.   Take Houston to cover this one and not almost blow it at the end like on Sunday.

Houston -4 – 2 stars

Clemson vs Arizona -7.5 O/U 151.5

Today the madness restarts!   This should be a fun game to watch and hopefully a fun game to win some dough.  Everyone knows the Caleb Love narrative to advance and face his old North Carolina team in the elite 8, but will they have enough against a strong Clemson team?   Arizona has really changed their tune when it comes to playing defense being ranked 9th and 10th on Kenpom in both efficiencies.  The big issue that I have with the cats, is that like the other cats of Kentucky, once they get D’d up, they definitely could falter as they showed vs against Washington State during the year, as well as USC and Oregon in March.  The place you worry about Arizona is down low where guys like Ballo and Krivas like to thrive, but Clemson has 5 guys that are all 6’8 or taller that get a lot of playing time and should be able to keep Arizona honest down low.   Clemson has been playing some knockout defense in the underrated ACC ranking 33rd against the three point shot and 3rd against near proximity.   They also rank 24th in offensive efficiency.   Since February 10th, Clemson ranks 20th in overall efficiency to Arizona at 5th.  The Tigers also tend to up their game when they play the top teams as we have seen when they beat Alabama, TCU and  North Carolina away from home.  I think that Clemson can hang in this game and possibly get the win.  This spread is too large and I will take Clemson +7.5

Clemson +7.5 – 2.5 stars

MLB Opening Day Free Play – Pablo Painting A Picasso

Happy Opening Day everyone! After all the spring training lead up and position battles the real thing is finally here. Yes I know the games in Seoul counted, but everyone knows this is the real start of the MLB season.

I am back for another six months of MLB handicapping and we are going start off by taking a look at the Twins visiting the Royals at Kauffman Stadium. First pitch is at 3:10 PM

Current Line Twins -120, Royals +100. Over/Under is 8 Juiced to the Over at -120

The pitching match-up features Pablo Lopez taking the mound for the Twins against Cole Ragans of the Royals. Ragans started 2023 in the bullpen for the Rangers before being traded for Aroldis Chapman. After the trade he made 12 starts for the Royals going 5-2 with a 2.64 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 71.2 IP. The strikeout stuff is nasty as he has a ++Changeup and a 10.59 K/9 in 2023. His biggest issue is limiting the walks, which he did as a starter last year and the question for him is if he can maintain that level of control. Pablo Lopez on the other side also has the big time strikeout stuff as he also has over 10 K/9, with much better control featuring an over 4.5K/BB ratio. He finished the year with a 3.66 ERA and a 3.28 xFIP.

The Royals added Hunter Renfroe and Adam Frazier to a lineup that was 23rd in MLB in runs scored and 24th in OPS in 2023. They have Bobby Witt Jr. who is the most exciting player in baseball not named Acuna and a now healthy bopper Vinnie Pasquantino ready to go for the season. The Twins were 10th in runs scored last year and 7th in OPS, led by rookie sensation Royce Lewis who smacked 15 Home Runs in only 236 plate appearances. The signed Carlos Santana to provide some stability at 1B.

The Cole Ragans love is real and I certainly think he could be an Ace in this league if he can gather his control, but he also gives up a a fair amount of hard contact. Lopez keeps the ball on the ground better and limits that hard contact more. Both pitchers struggled this spring, but with the typical tinkering involved I don’t take much of that into account early in the season. For me the handicap with two solid pitchers comes down to the offenses, and at this price I think the Twins ability to put up runs is better suited to come away with a win on opening day.

I’m on Minnesota.

Twins -120, 1 Unit.

MLB Season Preview Part 5/5 – Post Season Predictions, Awards and Props

Baseball season has arrived. We’re less than 24 hours away from opening pitches of opening day. We’ve looked at all six divisions from a betting perspective and have given you our futures bets and predictions. Traditionally baseball is my best sport to handicap, but we did have a losing season in 2023. All time tracked record in MLB still shows a 0.5% ROI and we’ll be getting back to our winning ways in 2024. You’ll be able to find my MLB betting package available here at TheOddsbreakers.com. It is $400 for every MLB game all the way through the playoffs.

Now we’ll finish up the season previews with a brief article about how I see the playoffs going and where there is value in pennant and World Series odds. We’ll throw in some season long props as well and MVP, CY and ROY predictions.

With all this being said, I don’t like tying up a boatload of cash for 6 months so wager as you feel. All my plays will be small, and mostly for fun here.

The Playoffs

AL Seeding

(1) Baltimore (2) Seattle (3) Minnesota (4) New York (5) Houston (6) Tampa

NL Seeding

(1) Los Angeles (2) Atlanta (3) Cincinnati (4) Philadelphia (5) Chicago (6) Miami

AL Wild Card

Minnesota vs Tampa – The Rays have too much in this short Series and win 2-1

New York Vs Houston – Give me the team with more recent success. Houston 2-1

NL Wild Card

Cincinnati vs Miami – If Miami stays healthy they have a shot, but I like up and coming Cincy 2-1

Philadelphia vs Chicago– Too many holes in the bullpen for Philly means the Cubs wins here 2-1

AL Divisional

Seattle vs Tampa – The Mariners staff carries them in a classic 3-2

Houston vs Baltimore – Baltimore rolls the cheaters 3-1

NL Divisional

Cincinnati vs Atlanta– The young Reds are still a year and a pitcher away from winning big. Atlanta 3-0

Chicago vs Los Angeles – Dodgers can’t win big games unless it is Covid. Cubs 3-2

ALCS

Seattle vs Baltimore – A tail of two young up and coming teams sees the Mariners bullpen pull this out 4-3

NLCS

Chicago vs Atlanta –  The Braves are just too much for the Cubbies and win 4-1

World Series

Atlanta vs Seattle – The Atlanta lineup is held at bay by the Mariners young starters. For the second year in a row a team wins their first ever World Series. Seattle 4-2

MLB Futures & Post-Season

National League odds to win. Brewers +4000, Reds +1400

American League Odds to win Mariners +850, Orioles +550

World Series Odds to Win Mariners +1800, Rays +3300, Reds +3000, Brewers +9000, Tigers +6000. I recommend using a dutching tool to mix up whatever you want to invest here.

Awards

AL ROY – Colt Keith +1000

NL ROY – Jackson Chourio +550

AL MVP – Juan Soto +600

NL MVP – I’m passing on these numbers. If I had to play something Freddie Freeman +1200

AL Cy Young – Pablo Lopez +1000

NL Cy Young – Logan Webb +950

Player Props

NL Top Prop – Rhys Hoskins Over 79.5 RBIs

AL Top Prop – Corey Seagar Batting Average Under .305

Fun Pick – Mike Trout Over 110.5 Games Started. Now that they’re going to be bad he will be healthy all season.

That’s it folks! Good Luck betting this MLB season! Hit me up here at TheOddsbreakers.com or on Twitter @TheGreatKnoche

2024 Texas Children’s Houston Open Preview & Picks

Peter Malnati secured a triumph at the Valspar Championship, seizing his second PGA TOUR victory after more than eight years since his last win. In a year marked by unexpected successes, Malnati’s victory stands out as he defied the odds, being a 300-1 underdog to win the tournament.

Our pick, Cam Young, narrowly missed out on claiming his inaugural PGA Tour victory, falling short by two shots. This marks consecutive runner-up finishes, with Cameron Young at the Valspar Championship and Xander Schauffele at THE PLAYERS Championship.

On numerous occasions, we’ve been on the cusp of securing our first outright win of the 2024 season, experiencing near misses at different events. Benny An came close at the Sony Open, narrowly missing out in a playoff. Christiaan Bezuidenhout clinched second place at The American Express, while Sam Burns tied for third at the WM Phoenix Open. Stephan Jaeger secured a T3 finish at the Mexico Open, and Hayden Springer matched that at the Puerto Rico Open.

Let’s get into this week’s storylines…

The last occurrence of this tournament took place in November 2022. Due to the PGA TOUR’s shift back to a calendar-year schedule for 2024, the event was omitted from the 2023 season.

After claiming victories at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and THE PLAYERS Championship, Scottie Scheffler opted out of participating in the Valspar Championship. However, he has been a consistent contender at Memorial Park Golf Course, having competed in each of the last three editions of the tournament held there. Throughout this period, he has secured two top-10 finishes.

Scottie began with odds of 3-1 on DraftKings, which have now shifted to +280. His initial +300 odds mark the shortest for a pre-tournament favorite since the Mexico Open at Vidanta last year, where Jon Rahm opened at +240 before securing the runner-up position to Tony Finau.

To be frank, there are just two scenarios in which Scheffler might not clinch victory in this event. The first is his lingering neck injury, for which he received on-course treatment during THE PLAYERS Championship. Despite this setback, it didn’t seem to impede his performance much, as evidenced by his win, highlighted by a remarkable final-round score of 64. The second potential obstacle could be his putting, although it has notably improved since he made the switch to a mallet putter.

Tony Finau aims to retain his championship title at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. He emerged victorious in the previous edition of this event in 2022. Since that memorable win, Finau has secured just one other victory on the PGA Tour, which came at the 2023 Mexico Open.

Padraig Harrington is set to join the field this week at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. His recent victory at the Hoag Classic marked his seventh triumph on the Champions Tour. Although he has participated in two PGA Tour events this season, his performances were varied, finishing T52 at the Mexico Open and missing the cut at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches. Harrington last competed at Memorial Park in 2021, securing a T32 finish.

Sam Bennett and Cole Hammer will kick off their 2024 PGA Tour season this week. Bennett, hailing from Texas A&M, has competed in five events on the Korn Ferry Tour this season, securing three top-25 finishes. Meanwhile, Hammer, representing Texas University, has participated in six starts on the Korn Ferry Tour this season, boasting two top-10 finishes. Hammer also has prior experience in this tournament, finishing 27th last season.

Course/ Tournament History:

The Houston Open teed off its inaugural round in 1946 under the banner of the “Houston Open Invitational.” Since then, it has roamed across various golf courses in the Houston vicinity.

In 2020, Memorial Golf Course secured its status as the tournament’s permanent home. Prior to this, the event found its residence at the Golf Club of Houston. The upcoming Houston Open at Memorial Park Golf Course marks only its fourth stint at this venue.

In 2019, the Astros Foundation spearheaded a $34 million revitalization project for Memorial Park, helmed by Tom Doak.

Following the 2022 edition, the course underwent further enhancements. The 17th Hole underwent a 30-yard extension, accompanied by a repositioned green and two additional bunkers. The rough was also trimmed down to 1.25″ from the previous length of 2.5″.

This tournament has faced challenges in securing a consistent sponsor. In the last three iterations, the event was backed by different entities (Vivint, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Cadence Bank). This year, Texas Children’s Hospital steps in as the primary sponsor.

Course Guide/ Scorecard:

Originally crafted by John Bredemus in 1936, Memorial Park Golf Course features a Par 70 layout, comprising five Par 3s, ten Par 4s, and three Par 5s.

Memorial Park poses a formidable challenge, ranking among the toughest courses on the Tour outside of the Majors. In 2022, only two holes outside the three Par 5s had a scoring average under par.

The course’s primary defense lies in its length and narrow fairways. Additionally, Memorial Park is highly susceptible to winds, posing a significant challenge for approach shots.

Memorial Park only has 21 bunkers that don’t play much of a factor. Most of the bunkers were eliminated during the 2019 renovation.

The rough will be less penal than previous editions as it has been cut down from 2.25″ to 1.25″.

The five Par 3’s range between 155 yards and 237 yards. In terms of stats, the majority (two) of the Par 3’s range between 150-175 yards. In the last edition of this event, all of the Par 3’s had a scoring average over par.

No. 7, 216 yards, Par 3: “Hole 7 is a long Par 3 that is tucked up against the trees and ravine. Depending on where the pin is located, players can land a ball on the front or run one down the slope that splits the green into two tiers. The right side of this green is the safe and favorable side.”

No. 15, 155 yards, Par 3: “Welcome to the loudest hole in Texas. Don’t let the distance fool you. This short Par 3 has a difficult green to land on with not much area for a safe miss. With a false front on the right side, a creek short and left, and a very narrow green, this exciting hole will be a challenge for pros and amateurs alike.”

There are ten Par 4’s at Memorial Park Golf Course with the majority of those holes ranging between 400 and 450 yards. No. 17 is the shortest listed at 405 yards with the longest being No. 14, playing 529 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest Par 4 on the course last year was No. 14 (+0.318).

No. 4, 490 yards, Par 4: “Hole 4 features one of the most important tee shots at Memorial Park Golf Course. From the tee box, it looks like a dog leg left, however, the fairway bends back to the right as you approach the green, creating a very interesting look. When hitting your approach, be cautious of going long, as there is a creek that lines the back of the green.”

No. 17, 405 yards, Par 4: “One of the more unique looking holes out at Memorial Park Golf Course, the 17th hole is a short Par 4 that requires two precise shots to hit the green in regulation. From the back tees, the fairway takes on an “S” like shape around the retention pond while the green juts out into the water for a tough second shot.”

There are three Par 5s on the course, No. 3, No. 8, and No. 16. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2022. The easiest hole on the course last year was No. 3 with a scoring average of 4.643.

No. 8, 625 yards, Par 5: “The longest Par 5 on the course, Hole 8 requires precise shots to maneuver the fairway and reach the green without any issues. The fairway starts with a dogleg right off the tee and then bends back left as you approach the green, bringing out-of-bounds areas into play. On the left edge of the green, a creek can come into play causing a player to favor the right side.”

No. 16, 576 yards, Par 5: “This long Par 5 is difficult to go for in two, but not impossible. With a long drive off the tee, the fairway has a downslope that players use to their advantage. But if the ball goes too far left, it can end up in the thick trees forcing a lay up. The green is protected by water on three of its four sides, and not much room behind for a bail-out shot.”

The Field/ Odds:

There will be 144 players competing in this year’s Texas Children’s Houston Open. Only ten of the top fifty players in the Official World Golf Ranking are in the field. Here are the current favorites in this week’s event:

Scottie Scheffler (+300) triumphed at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and THE PLAYERS Championship in his previous two outings. Across his eight starts this season, he has maintained a flawless streak, consistently finishing within the top 20. This marks his fourth visit to Memorial Park Golf Course. Notably, in his last two appearances at this event, he secured finishes of T2 and T9.

Wyndham Clark (+1400) secured runner-up positions at both the Arnold Palmer Invitational and THE PLAYERS Championship in his recent outings. Additionally, Clark boasts a victory this season, clinching the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am title, albeit after it was abbreviated to 54 holes. This marks his fourth participation in this event, with his strongest showing of T16 occurring in 2022, the most recent edition of the tournament.

Tony Finau (+1800) holds the title of defending champion in this event. Throughout his eight starts on the PGA Tour this season, he has secured three top-20 finishes. However, his recent performances have been less than stellar, as he struggled to a T45 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship and, more recently, missed the cut at the Valspar Championship.

Sahith Theegala (+2000) is set to make his third appearance at this event. In his two previous outings at Memorial Park, he secured finishes of T61 and T22. Despite not clinching a victory this year, Theegala boasts four top-10 finishes in his eight starts on the Tour.

Will Zalatoris (+2000) will make his tournament debut at the Texas Children’s Houston Open. Across his six starts on the PGA Tour this season, he has secured three top-20 finishes. Nevertheless, he faced challenges in his most recent outing, failing to make the cut at THE PLAYERS Championship.

Projected Final Score:

  • 72 Hole Winning Score – 265.5/ -14.5 (Over -110/ Under -110)

In the past three editions of the Texas Children’s Houston Open, the winning score has been above 265.5 (-14.5) twice times. However, in the most recent edition of this event, Tony Finau posted a winning score of 16.

In the past, we’ve seen the weather play a factor at this event and it should again this week. However, I would expect this venue to play easier this season mainly due to the rough being cut down to 1.25″ from 2.5″.

Picks (Outrights):

  • Sahith Theegala (+2200) – DraftKings
    • Risk: 0.37 to win 8.14 Units

Theegala made a strong start to the season by finishing runner-up at The Sentry, narrowly missing victory by one stroke to Chris Kirk. His recent performances have been impressive, securing a T6 finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a T9 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship.

Having competed here twice before, Theegala finished T61 in 2021 and improved to T22 in 2022.

In his last 24 rounds, Theegala ranks 2nd in SG: Putting (Bermudagrass), 11th in SG: Off the Tee, and 44th in SG: Approach. He also excels in Par 4: 400-450 Yard Scoring and Par 5: 550-600 Yard Scoring. His considerable distance off the tee is expected to provide him with an advantage this week, as he’s gained distance on the field in seven of his eight tournaments this season.

  • Alex Noren (+4500) – FanDuel
    • Risk: 0.18 to win 8.10 Units

Noren is showing signs of improvement with his best performances of the 2024 season. He secured a T9 finish at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches and followed it up with a T19 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship. Impressively, he gained strokes in every category in both of these events.

Having competed at Memorial Park twice before, Noren’s debut saw him miss the cut, but he bounced back strongly in 2022 with a T4 finish.

In his last 24 rounds, Noren ranks 14th in SG: Putting (Bermudagrass), 37th in SG: Off the Tee, and 34th in SG: Approach. Notably, his short game has been exceptional lately, ranking 24th in SG: Around the Green and 10th in Scrambling Gained during this period. He also excels in Par 3: 150-175 Yard Scoring and Par 5: 550-600 Yard Scoring. With his recent form and course history, this week presents a promising opportunity for Noren to secure his first PGA Tour victory.

  • Keith Mitchell (+4500) – Caesars
    • Risk: 0.18 to win 8.10 Units

Keith Mitchell held the 54-hole lead at the Valspar Championship last week, but unfortunately, a final-round 77 took him out of contention. Nonetheless, he’s had an impressive start to the season, securing five top-20 finishes in his nine starts.

His initial outings at Memorial Park were challenging, as he missed the cut in 2020 and finished T41 in 2021. However, in his most recent appearance at this venue, he improved to a T9 finish.

In the last 24 rounds, Mitchell ranks 2nd in SG: Off the Tee, and 3rd in SG: Approach. Off the tee, he’s known for his distance rather than his accuracy. In the past, he’s struggled with his short game but that has become much more consistent around the green this season. His putting has also been an issue but in the lone event with a similar green complex (WM Phoenix Open), he gained strokes putting. Mitchell also gained strokes on the green at the last edition of the Houston Open

  • Kurt Kitayama (+6600) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 0.13 to win 8.58 Units

Kitayama has only missed the cut once in his seven starts on the PGA Tour this season. During this stretch, he has achieved six top-40 finishes, including two top-20 finishes. His recent strong performance at THE PLAYERS Championship saw him secure a T19 placement.

This week marks Kitayama’s tournament debut, although he does have a notable 2nd place finish at the Renaissance Club in 2022, which shares similarities with the course layout this week.

Over the last 24 rounds, Kitayama ranks 21st in SG: Off the Tee, 26th in SG: Approach, and 34th in SG: Putting (Bermudagrass). Renowned for his powerful drives rather than pinpoint accuracy off the tee, he has outdistanced the field in six of his seven tournaments this season. While he has encountered challenges on the greens in the past, he has shown improvement by gaining strokes putting in three of his last four events. Notably, his best putting performance occurred at TPC Scottsdale, which shares similarities with Memorial Park’s green complex. Additionally, his iron play has been exceptional this season, particularly with his long irons, as he ranks 1st in Proximity Gained from 200+ Yards.

  • Mark Hubbard (+12500) – Caesars
    • Risk: 0.07 to win 8.75 Units

Hubbard has maintained a perfect record, making the cut in all eight of his starts on the PGA Tour this season. However, he has only managed to break into the top 20 twice, securing a T20 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open and a notable T4 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

While Hubbard has faced challenges in his recent outings at Memorial Park, he did showcase a strong performance with a T2 finish at this event back in 2020. Additionally, he achieved a respectable T27 finish at last year’s Wells Fargo Championship, hosted at Quail Hollow.

  • Andrew Novak (+20000) – FanDuel
    • Risk: 0.04 to win 8.00 Units

Novak has been in impressive form, securing top-20 finishes in four of his last five starts on the PGA Tour. While he will be making his tournament debut this week, his overall game is well-suited to the challenges of this course.

Over the past 24 rounds, Novak has demonstrated notable strengths, ranking 9th in SG: Approach, 5th in Proximity Gained from 200+ Yards, 10th in SG: Around the Green, and 18th in Scrambling Gained. Known for his distance off the tee rather than pinpoint accuracy, he has outdistanced the field in five of his last six tournaments. Additionally, Novak has shown consistency on the greens, gaining strokes putting in five of his last six starts. Notably, his best putting performance occurred at TPC Scottsdale, which shares similarities with Memorial Park’s green complex.

Total Risk on Outrights: 0.97 Units

Picks (Top 20):

  • Mackenzie Hughes (+200) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 2.00 Units

Hughes has shown consistency by missing only one cut in his eight starts this season, though he has cracked the top 20 only once. That breakthrough came last week at the Valspar Championship, where he secured an impressive T3 finish.

Memorial Park holds favorable memories for Hughes, with strong performances in previous years. He achieved a T7 finish in 2020, followed by finishes of T29 in 2021 and T16 in 2022.

While Hughes may not be renowned as a long hitter, he has demonstrated improved distance in three of his last four tournaments. Moreover, he has enhanced his accuracy off the tee, showcasing increasing consistency. His approach play has also been commendable, gaining strokes in each of his last three events. Particularly noteworthy is his prowess around the greens, where he ranks 1st in SG: Around the Green amongst the field in the last 24 rounds.

  • Billy Horschel (+200) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 2.00 Units

Following early struggles with two missed cuts in his first three events, Horschel has recently shown a return to form. He secured top-15 finishes in two of his last three events, including a T9 finish at the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches and a T12 finish at the Valspar Championship last week.

While Horschel has participated in this event in the past, he has not competed in the past three years, indicating a lack of prior experience at Memorial Park. However, last season, he performed decently at several comparable courses, achieving a T65 finish at the Genesis Scottish Open and a T40 finish at the Charles Schwab Challenge.

Over the last 24 rounds, Horschel ranks 4th in SG: Putting (Bermudagrass), 23rd in SG: Off the Tee, and 31st in SG: Approach. Additionally, he excels in Par 3: 150-175 Yard Scoring and Par 4: 400-450 Yard Scoring. Furthermore, Horschel has demonstrated proficiency around the greens, gaining strokes in each of his last three events and ranking 20th in Scrambling Gained over the last 24 rounds.

Total Risk on Top 20s: 2.00 Units

Picks (Top 40):

  • Ryan Fox (+130) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.30 Units

In his inaugural full season as a PGA Tour member, Ryan Fox has encountered some challenges while adapting. Out of his first six starts this year, Fox missed the cut four times. However, he managed to secure solid finishes at PGA National, where he landed at T35, and at TPC Scottsdale, finishing T41.

Despite lacking prior experience at Memorial Park, Fox has shown proficiency at similar courses in the past. Last season, he achieved a T21 finish at Colonial Country Club and a commendable T12 finish at the Renaissance Club.

In his recent performances, Fox has displayed improved consistency with his iron play, gaining strokes on approach in each of the last three events. Known for his impressive distance off the tee rather than pinpoint accuracy, this attribute proves advantageous this week, where distance holds more importance. While his putting has been inconsistent this season, he has been much better on bermudagrass surfaces.

  • Joseph Bramlett (+130) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.30 Units

Bramlett’s journey on the PGA Tour this season has been marked by varied outcomes. Out of his eight starts, he has missed the cut in three events but has secured three top-40 finishes. Notably, he recently delivered his best performance of the season, claiming a T17 finish at the Valspar Championship.

His track record at Memorial Park Golf Course reflects a similar inconsistency. In his initial two visits to Houston, he managed a T74 finish and missed the cut. However, last season, he showcased significant improvement with a T9 finish at the venue.

Recognized for his impressive distance off the tee rather than pinpoint accuracy, Bramlett’s approach play has been somewhat inconsistent this season. However, he displayed his best performance with his irons last week. Around the greens, Bramlett demonstrates prowess, ranking 6th in Scrambling Gained in the last 24 rounds compared to the field. Additionally, he excels in Par 3: 150-175 Yard Scoring, Par 4: 400-450 Yard Scoring, and Par 5: 550-600 Yard Scoring.

Total Risk on Top 40s: 2.00 Units

MLB Season Preview Part 4/5 – American League Preview

Well, the life of a busy full time husband/Dad and having a full-time job caught up with me and I am simply running out of time to do each division in the American League as it’s own preview. I am going to go through the whole American League in a more condensed version than normal and set you up with my Season win total and division plays. I’ll finish up tomorrow with some season awards and season long predictions.

ALWest

Betting Odds to Win Division and Season Over/Under Win Totals

Houston Astros -115/92.5

Texas Rangers +200/89.5

Seattle Mariners +250/87.5

Los Angeles Angels +2200/72.5

Oakland Athletics +12500/58.5

Houston Astros

Astros didn’t make many moves to the core of the team with the big addition being Josh Hader into the bullpen giving them him and Ryan Pressly at the back end which is solid. The lineup remains intact from last season. The big question marks are will the young arms in the rotation make a step forward with Hunter Brown and Christian Javier as the back end of the rotation is a question mark. I don’t see this team being as good as it has been in the past. Prediction 89-73

Seattle Mariners

The Mariners rotation is young and getting better. George Kirby, Bryce Miller and Logan Gilbert are all top tier arms following Luis Castillo in the rotation. The lineup got a bit of a makeover bringing back Mitch Haniger who will need to stay healthy to return value. If he does the top six in this lineup are very dangerous. I love Andres Munoz at the back end of the bullpen. Prediction 89-73

Texas Rangers

The defending champs won the World Series with a solid core in the lineup and it should only get better with a full season on deck for Evan Carter and Wyatt Langford. Add those two onto Marcus Semien, Corey Seagar and Adolis Garcia and the lineup should score plenty. The rotation also looks solid with Nathan Eovaldi, Jon Gary, Andrew Heaney and Dan Dunning hopefully awaiting an effective and healthy arrival of Jacob Degrom and Max Scherzer at some point. The bullpen is the weakness of the team. This group should certainly be in play for a chance to get back to the playoffs in 2024. Prediction 86-76

Los Angeles Angels

Losing Shohei and replacing him with Aaron Hicks isn’t going to make this team better. They signed some other low tier options to replace others that left in Free Agency and this team will be rebuilding in 2024. The rotation isn’t great, but also isn’t awful and they should keep some games close. The bullpen is already injured and doesn’t have any dominant arms. Prediction 72-90

Oakland Athletics

The lineup has potential to improve as some young bats outperformed predictions in 2023. J.D. Davis joins the lineup as well for a solid veteran presence. The rotation adds Alex Wood and Ross Stripling and hopes for a bounce back for both. Mason Miller looks like a dominant closer in the making if the A’s can ever get him the ball with a lead. Prediction 63-99

Oakland Athletics Over 58.5 wins – 1.5 Units

I can’t see this team being as bad as they were in 2023. 9 more wins is a lot, but I’m still only asking them to lose 103 games or less.

Betting Odds to Win Division and Season Over/Under Win Totals

Minnesota Twins -120/86.5

Cleveland Guardians +300/79.5

Detroit Tigers +300/79.5

Kansas City Royals +700/73.5

Chicago White Sox +300/63.5

Minnesota Twins

The Twinkies lose Sonny Gray in the off-season from the rotation that led this team to the division title in 2023. The rest of the rotation has ace Pablo Lopez and Bailey Ober and Joe Ryan backing him up. If the lineup can stay healthy and have Royce Lewis and Edouard Julien perform as they showed glimpses of in 2023 this group should be enough to get them back to the title in 2023. The bullpen has health issues already with Jhoan Duran, but I think is a top five overall unit in baseball. Prediction 85-77

Cleveland Guardians

The team was devastated by injuries to the rotation in 2023 and hope for consistency this year. Shane Bieber will look to regain his ace form this season. The lineup led by Jose Ramirez doesn’t have a ton of power in it, but contact and speed is in abundance. Emmanuel Clase and Scott Barlow are a solid top two in the bullpen. Prediction 80-82

Detroit Tigers

The Tigers are everyone’s darling to make a big step forward and compete in 2024 after a surprise 78 win season last year. Former first round picks Riley Greene and Spencer Torkelson have begun to produce as advertised. They’ll need to get some more advances from Kerry Carpenter and hope Parker Meadows is also as good as his counterparts. If Kenta Maeda and Jack Flaherty can return to past form they’ll join Tarik Skubal as keys to the rotation. The bullpen is a weakness and is likely the most limiting factor to them making a big jump. Prediction 80-82

Kansas City Royals

This team lost 106 games in 2023, and yet some folks think they will be 20 games better this year. They have the most exciting player in baseball not named Acuna in Bobby Witt. They added Hunter Renfroe and Adam Frazier to Salvador Perez, Vinnie Pasquantino and Nelson Velazquez. The rotation features Cole Ragans who was dominant once he got in the rotation last year. He is joined by free agents Seth Lugo and Michael Wacha. They’ll need Brady Singer to figure things out again to really compete though. The bullpen has Will Smith as a trade bait closer. Prediction 72-90

Chicago White Sox

This team is two years removed from being a World Series favorite and lost 101 games in 2023. They let Dylan Cease go a few weeks back, and now will feature one of the worst rotations in baseball. The lineup still has Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez (If he’s healthy) and Andrew Vaughn. Michael Kopech moved into the bullpen this spring and has potential to be an elite arm in the bullpen, but the rest of the group is weak. Prediction 66-96

AL Central Free Plays

The prices on the teams behind the Twins are to short for me to make a play, and I think this division will be volatile so I am staying away.

Betting Odds to Win Division and Season Over/Under Win Totals

New York Yankees +165/92.5

Baltimore Orioles +165/90.5

Toronto Blue Jays +375/87.5

Tampa Bay Rays +525/84.5

Boston Red Sox +1500/77.5

Baltimore Orioles

They won 101 games last year and added Corbin Burnes in a huge trade. They lost Kyle Bradish already for the season however and John Means is still coming back from his injury. If Grayson Rodriguez improves and Tyler Wells stays solid they will still have a Top 10 overall rotation. The lineup doesn’t change much, but is already good enough to win this division again. The bullpen added Craig Kimbrel to take over for the injured Felix Bautista. Prediction 94-68

New York Yankees

The Yankees made the biggest move this off-season adding Juan Soto. They didn’t address 3B, but I think they’ll have enough pieces with Torres, Judge, and Rizzo surrounding Soto. I also think Anthony Volpe is ready to make a big step forward for them. They added Marcus Stroman to a rotation that now has Gerritt Cole likely spending a good chunk of the first part of the year on the IL. The bullpen has four solid arms led by Clay Holmes. Prediction 89-73

Tampa Bay Rays

Everyone always sleeps on the Rays. Don’t. This team turns young players struggling on other teams into solid pitchers again and again. The did it with Zach Eflin was last year and Ryan Pepiot is this years candidate. The lineup is solid top to bottom. I think Jose Caballero could lead the league in steals. Isaac Parades could lead all 3B in Home Runs. Pete Fairbanks leads a Top 5 bullpen. Prediction 87-75

Toronto Blue Jays

This is the team that never seems to get over the final hurdle. Injuries seem to bite, and the lineup keeps under performing. Jordan Romano is already out in the bullpen, and Kevin Gausman has dodged a scare already in the rotation. The lineup really needs its stars to have a big season to compete in this division. Vlad Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette are always solid, but they need a big year. If Dalton Varsho delivers on his pedigree that would help the cause. Prediction 85-77

Boston Red Sox

This is likely the strongest division in baseball , and I don’t think the Red Sox are a bad team, but they will need something to really go their way to compete. They’ve won 78 games back to back years and I don’t see a lot of reasons that will change this year. They shed salary and got younger and I love the additions of Tyler O’Neill and Vaughn Grissom (once healthy).  Kutter Crawford could become and ace for them, but the rest of the rotation is likely looking at +4 ERAs across the board. Kenley Jansen seems past his prime in the bullpen, and there are not many other intriguing arms there. Prediction 78-84
