2024 Mexico Open at Vidanta – Preview & Picks

Congratulations to all those who had Hideki Matsuyama at The Genesis Invitational last week, witnessing his ninth victory in the past decade! Matsuyama has now achieved the highest number of PGA TOUR wins by an Asian-born player, surpassing K.J. Choi’s record of eight victories. In a remarkable feat, Matsuyama became the first player to enter the final round of a TOUR event trailing by six strokes or more and subsequently win by at least three strokes since Bubba Watson accomplished the feat at the 2018 Travelers Championship, where he trailed by 6 strokes but won by 3. The Sunday showdown was nothing short of thrilling, with five players tied at -14 for a significant duration. Matsuyama’s stellar performance on Sunday, carding an impressive 62, stood in stark contrast to Cantlay’s final-round performance, who, despite holding a two-shot lead heading into the day, could only manage a 70.

It was also great to see Will Zalatrois back in contention after recovering from back surgery. Initially slated to participate in this week’s event, he decided to withdraw from the Mexico Open after securing a tied second-place finish.

Tiger Woods had to end his 2024 season debut prematurely this week. He withdrew during the second round due to an illness. There was speculation that it might have been related to his ankle or back, especially since he had mentioned experiencing back spasms towards the end of the first round.

Jordan Spieth was disqualified from the event on Friday afternoon after signing an incorrect scorecard during Friday’s 2-over 73 round. According to the Tour, Spieth mistakenly signed for a three on the 4th hole when he actually made a four. This marks the second disqualification in the last four years for Spieth, the first occurring in a full-field PGA Tour event. Previously, he was disqualified from the JP McManus Pro-Am in 2023 for picking up his ball from the green before holing out. Additionally, at the Hero World Challenge in 2021, he narrowly avoided disqualification for playing from the wrong tees, instead receiving a rarely enforced two-shot penalty.

Betting-wise, we didn’t have a great week at all. The only bet we cashed was Jason Day Top 20 (+130). Our closest outright of the week was Sam Burns who finished tied for tenth.

Let’s get into this week’s storylines…

Tony Finau is gearing up to defend his title at the Mexico Open this week. His only other appearance at Vidanta Vallarta saw him finish tied for second.

Cristobal Del Solar will be making his second appearance at the Mexico Open after missing the cut last year. Notably, he recently achieved a remarkable feat by shooting a 57 at the Korn Ferry Tour’s Astara Golf Championship, setting the record for the lowest round ever recorded in a PGA TOUR-sanctioned event.

Santiago De la Fuente, a senior at the University of Houston, secured victory at the 2024 Latin America Amateur Championship, earning himself starts at this year’s Masters, U.S. Open, and The Open Championship at Royal Troon. This marks his second appearance at the Mexico Open after missing the cut last year.

Fred Biondi is ready to make his PGA TOUR debut for the 2024 season in Mexico. The 2023 NCAA individual champion previously played his first PGA TOUR event as a pro at last year’s Fortinet Championship. Biondi has participated in four Korn Ferry Tour events this season and has made every cut. His standout performance was a tie for seventh at The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic at Sandals Emerald Bay.

Course/ Tournament History:

The inaugural Mexican Open took place in 1944 at the Club de Golf Chapultepec. In 2022, it gained official status on the PGA Tour and relocated to Vidanta Vallarta. Notably, this year marks the first time the event will be held in February, with the previous two editions taking place in April (2023) and May (2022).

At Vidanta Vallarta, a resort boasting numerous courses, our attention is drawn to The Norman Signature Course. Crafted by Greg Norman in 2015, this course sits adjacent to the Pacific Ocean, offering stunning vistas and a unique experience. The Ameca River meanders through various holes, adding to its charm. An interesting tidbit about this venue is its unique access via the world’s longest golf cart suspension bridge.

Course Guide/ Scorecard:

The Norman Signature Course at Vidanta Vallarta, originally crafted by Greg Norman in 2015, presents golfers with a challenging Par 71 layout spanning 7,456 yards. Notably, it boasts a distinctive configuration featuring five Par 3s, nine Par 4s, and four Par 5s.

To adhere to PGA TOUR standards, the course underwent significant alterations. This included replacing the geotextile and sand in the 106 traps, with 1,760 tons of white silica sand sourced from Veracruz, Mexico. Additionally, the sand in the practice area’s traps was also replaced.

The course’s par rating was adjusted from Par 73 to Par 71. Notably, the 4th and 16th holes were reclassified from Par 5s to Par 4s. Furthermore, nine holes underwent lengthening, including holes 1 to 4 of the first round and holes 10, 12, 14, 16, and 18 of the second round. As a result of these modifications, the course’s total yardage increased by 169 yards, now measuring 7,456 yards compared to its previous length of 7,287 yards.

Regarding its length, the Norman Signature Course stands as one of the Tour’s lengthiest, ranking sixth out of 44 courses. Despite its length, the fairways offer ample room for play, ranking similarly in width. The rough, measuring a modest 2 inches, is less punitive, while the generous average green size of 7,000 square feet adds to the course’s playability. Notably, the abundance of bunkers, numbering 106, poses a significant challenge to players, ranking among the top two on Tour. Additionally, the prevailing winds from the Pacific Ocean contribute to the course’s defense, requiring strategic shot-making. The greens feature Paspalum grass, typical of coastal courses, providing a sticky surface that discourages bump-and-run shots around the greens.

The five Par 3’s range from 170 to 226 yards. Last year, No. 9 and No. 17 were the only two Par 3’s to have a scoring average over par.

No. 5, 208 yards, Par 3: “This first par 3 has a green protected entirely by traps, so it simulates an island-type green. The control of the spin will be very important to be able to attack the flag and get the long-awaited birdie.”

Image

No. 9, 197 yards, Par 3: “With an elevated island-type transverse green with a lake in front and undulations on the surface of the green, it will allow players to get the best out of their control shots with medium irons, as well as the wind that, due to the height of the shot, will affect the flights of the ball from the start.”

There are nine Par 4’s at Vidanta Vallarta with the majority of those holes ranging between 450 and 500 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest Par 4 on the course last year was No. 10 (+0.417).

Image

No. 3, 445 yards, Par 4: “Another of the new tees protected by desert on the right side and lake on the left side, plus some traps halfway through. But what’s really tricky about this hole is the crosswind you usually find on the shots to the green. When achieving the fairway, the second shot will have to be applied to the sensitivity of the player to control the distance due to the crosswind and the bounce on the green that is divided into two floors, interesting flag positions on a hole that requires total control from the tee of tee.”

Image

No. 7, 297 yards, Par 4: “A hole known as “risk-reward”, where players will be able to reach the green without problems, but they will have to take care of the water on the left side and the sand traps on the right side of the green. Without a doubt, one of the holes where we can see many fireworks as it is the shortest par 4 of the 18 holes.”

Image

No. 15, 459 yards, Par 4: “Penalty lake all along the left side of the fairway from tee off to the green and with a sand trap in the middle of the fairway reachable with the drive. The green is flat with no undulations and with sand traps protecting its right side.”

There are four Par 5s on the course, No. 6, No. 12, No. 14, and No. 18. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2023.

No. 12, 637 yards, Par 5: “A long par 5 that makes it difficult to reach the two-way green. The imposing parota tree protecting the second shot makes players concentrate on a placement shot to achieve a short third shot that allows them to get down a stroke to par of the hole.”

No. 18, 548 yards, Par 5: “A parota shaft protects the tee shot. In addition, a narrow fairway covered with sand traps on the left side and an O.B. on the right side make it a challenge off the tee. However, it gives you a chance to get on two strokes with a chance of ending your round with an eagle. In case it is played conservatively, the third shot to the green requires maximum precision to be able to place the third shot close to the hole and be able to close their round with birdie.”

The Field/ Odds:

There will be 132 players competing in this week’s tournament. Among them are five of the top sixty players in the Official World Golf Ranking. Here are the current favorites in this week’s event:

Tony Finau (+650) aims to repeat his success this week at Vidanta Vallarta as he defends his title. His stellar performance in this tournament includes a T2 finish in 2022. Since his triumph, Finau has yet to clinch another PGA TOUR victory. He has participated in six events this season, with his strongest showing being a T6 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open. Last week, he concluded the Genesis Invitational at T19.

Nicolai Højgaard (+1600) kicked off his 2024 season with two appearances on the DP World Tour. He secured a T25 finish at the Dubai Invitational and followed it up with a commendable T7 performance at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. Transitioning to the PGA Tour, Højgaard made his debut at the Farmers Insurance Open, clinching a runner-up position. Subsequently, he achieved a T31 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and, most recently, a T29 finish at the Genesis Invitational last week. Notably, he participated in this event last year, concluding with a T33 finish.

Emiliano Grillo (+2000) delivered a strong performance at the Mexico Open last year, securing a T5 finish. In 2022, he closed the event at T33. Grillo has showcased solid form at the start of the 2024 season. He kicked off the year at Kapalua with a T43 finish and followed it up with consistent showings, landing inside the top 22 in the subsequent four tournaments. Last week, he concluded the Genesis Invitational at T44.

Taylor Pendrith (+2200) made his tournament debut last year, concluding at T30. In the current season, he has participated in three events. Pendrith initiated his season at Waialae with a T10 finish. However, he faced challenges at The American Express, failing to make the cut. He regained his form in his latest outing, securing a T9 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Stephan Jaeger (+2200) is poised for his third outing at Vidanta Vallarta this week. In his inaugural appearance, he secured a commendable T15 finish, followed by another strong performance last year, finishing T18. His 2024 season kicked off on a positive note with a T18 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii. However, he faced challenges at The American Express, ending with a T52 finish. Jaeger bounced back impressively with a remarkable T3 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open. In his most recent tournament, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, he concluded with a T71 finish, losing strokes in every category.

Since relocating to Vidanta Vallarta, the Mexico Open has witnessed a winning score below -21 only once. Tony Finau’s remarkable victory last year saw him finish with an impressive -24, setting a new record. In the previous year, Jon Rahm secured the title with a score of -17.

Although weather conditions can sometimes impact the tournament, this year’s forecast appears favorable. While wind can pose a challenge for players, the projected conditions suggest relatively calm weather. In 2022, wind gusts exceeding 25 mph during the first two rounds contributed to a challenging playing environment. Last year, conditions were similar to what is expected this week.

In terms of the field’s strength, this year’s event boasts the highest caliber of players seen in recent years. The field rating has steadily increased over the past three years, from 151.00 in 2022 to 180.47 this year, indicating a stronger and more competitive field.

“Horses for Courses” is a phrase that is widely used and describes the best course/tournament fits. These are players that have had success at the particular course/event. “Donkeys for Courses” is something I came up with that highlights the players who have struggled at a specific course/tournament.

Picks (Outrights):

  • Stephan Jaegar (+2200) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 0.37 to win 8.14 Units

Stephan Jaeger is still pursuing his maiden PGA Tour victory. He kicked off the 2024 season impressively with a T18 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii. However, he encountered difficulties in his subsequent outing, settling for a T52 finish at The American Express. Jaeger bounced back strongly at the Farmers Insurance Open, securing a remarkable T3 finish, marking his best performance on the PGA Tour to date. Nevertheless, his most recent appearance at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am saw him struggle across all aspects of his game, finishing T71.

Heading into his third appearance at Vidanta Vallarta, Jaeger’s previous showings indicate a promising trajectory. He finished T15 in his tournament debut and followed up with a T18 finish last year.

Jaeger’s advantage this week lies in his impressive distance off the tee, ranking 14th on the PGA TOUR this season in Driving Distance with an average of 305.7 yards. Moreover, over the last 24 rounds, Jaeger has consistently performed well, ranking inside the top 20 in SG: Tee to Green, SG: Off the Tee, and SG: Ball Striking compared to the field. He also stands third in Birdies or Better Gained. With a blend of promising course history and a game showing positive signs, Jaeger appears primed to clinch his inaugural PGA Tour victory.

  • Taylor Pendrith (+2800) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 0.29 to win 8.12 Units

Taylor Pendrith made his tournament debut last year, finishing T30. During the Fall Swing, he showcased his abilities with a T15 finish at El Cardonal at Diamante, a course comparable to this week’s venue, which hosts the World Wide Technology Championship.

In the early stages of the 2024 season, Pendrith demonstrated his potential with a strong performance at Kapalua, finishing tied for 10th. However, he faced challenges at The American Express, missing the cut. Nonetheless, he bounced back in his most recent start, securing a T9 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open.

Pendrith’s notable attribute is his exceptional distance off the tee, which should be advantageous this week. In the last 24 rounds, he ranks impressively compared to the field: 3rd in SG: Tee to Green, 7th in SG: Ball Striking, 11th in SG: Approach, and 16th in SG: Off the Tee. Additionally, he performs well in Sand Saves Gained and Birdies or Better Gained. While his performance last year may not have matched his current level, Pendrith’s overall game suits this course. With some success on the greens, he stands a good chance of contending this week.

  • Davis Thompson (+3500) – FanDuel
    • Risk: 0.23 to win 8.05 Units

Davis Thompson kicked off the year at Waialae Country Club, securing a T57 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He followed up with a T21 finish at The American Express but faced a setback with a missed cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. However, he rebounded strongly in his most recent start, finishing T15 at the WM Phoenix Open.

This marks Thompson’s debut at Vidanta Vallarta, although he showcased his skills at El Cardonal at Diamante, a course comparable to this week’s venue, where he finished T15 in the World Wide Technology Championship.

While currently ranking 50th in Driving Distance this season, Thompson has demonstrated an increase in yardage over the field in his last three events. In the last 24 rounds, he impresses compared to the field, ranking 10th in SG: Approach, 14th in SG: Ball Striking, and 20th in SG: Tee to Green. Notably, he excels as a long iron player, ranking 3rd in Proximity Gained: 200+ Yards among the field.

  • Erik van Rooyen (+3500) – FanDuel
    • Risk: 0.23 to win 8.05 Units

Erik van Rooyen kicked off his 2024 PGA Tour season with a solid T22 finish at The Sentry. However, he faced some struggles at Waialae Country Club, finishing T52. He quickly regained his form with impressive performances, securing T25 at The American Express and T20 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Unfortunately, he encountered difficulties in his most recent outing, missing the cut at the WM Phoenix Open.

This marks Van Rooyen’s second appearance at Vidanta Vallarta after his T33 finish last year. Notably, he clinched victory at the World Wide Technology Championship at El Cardonal at Diamante, a course comparable to this week’s venue.

In his last 24 rounds, van Rooyen has showcased remarkable stats, ranking 1st in SG: Ball Striking, 3rd in SG: Approach, 7th in SG: Tee to Green, and 8th in SG: Off the Tee. Additionally, he performs well in Par 4 Scoring: 450-500 Yards, and Par 5 Scoring: 600-650 Yards, adding to his strengths on the course.

  • Jhonattan Vegas (+6600) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 0.13 to win 8.58 Units

The 39-year-old Venezuelan golfer is vying for his fourth career PGA Tour victory in this week’s tournament. His most recent triumph dates back to 2017 at the RBC Canadian Open. Unfortunately, Vegas had to curtail his 2023 season due to an elbow injury, but he has made a strong comeback in 2024. Despite a rocky start with three missed cuts in his first three starts of the season, he showed improvement in his latest outing, finishing T22 at the WM Phoenix Open.

Vegas has historically excelled on coastal courses, boasting top-10 finishes at the Corales Puntacana Championship, Puerto Rico Open, and Mayakoba Golf Classic. However, his appearance at Vidanta Vallarta marks a debut for him on this particular course.

Over his last 24 rounds, Vegas impressively ranks 2nd in SG: Off the Tee, 2nd in SG: Ball Striking, 8th in SG: Tee to Green, and 23rd in SG: Approach. His proficiency off the tee grants him a notable advantage this week. Additionally, he shines in Par 3 Scoring: 175-200 Yards, ranking 5th, and in Par 4 Scoring: 450-500 Yards, where he secures the 2nd position.

Total Risk on Outrights: 1.25 Units

Picks (Top 20):

  • Doug Ghim (+175) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.75 Units

After a rocky start to the 2024 season, missing the cut in his initial two events, Ghim has staged a notable comeback in his recent outings. At the Farmers Insurance Open, he secured a T13 finish, followed by an impressive T12 finish at the WM Phoenix Open.

This marks Ghim’s third appearance at Vidanta Vallarta. In 2022, he finished T33, but he faced a setback last year, missing the cut. Notably, during his struggle last year, he had also missed the cut in two of the three preceding events leading into the Mexico Open. However, Ghim has showcased his prowess at comparable courses, securing a T16 finish at the Corales Puntacana Championship and a T15 finish at the World Wide Technology Championship.

Over his last 24 rounds, Ghim stands out, ranking 1st in SG: Tee to Green, 3rd in SG: Ball Striking, 5th in SG: Off the Tee, and 10th in SG: Approach. While he may not be the longest hitter off the tee, his proficiency with long irons compensates for it. Although Ghim has encountered putting challenges in the past, he has displayed improvement, gaining strokes on the green in his last two events. With his game trending positively and considering his previous successes on coastal courses, Ghim appears well-positioned for success this week.

  • Samuel Stevens (+250) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 2.50 Units

Stevens had a promising rookie season last year, often coming close to clinching a victory. His standout performance occurred at the Valero Texas Open, a Greg Norman-designed course, where he secured a runner-up spot behind Corey Conners. This year, he’s kicked off the season on a stronger note compared to last year. To start the 2024 season, he finished T24 at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He followed that up placing T65 at The American Express and T43 at the Farmers Insurance Open. In his most recent start, he finished T28 at the WM Phoenix Open.

Sam Stevens will be making his tournament debut this week. Notably, he has fared well on other coastal courses in the past, securing a T3 at the Corales Puntacana Championship and a T15 at the Puerto Rico Open.

Stevens possesses the necessary distance off the tee to contend this week. Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks 9th in SG: Tee to Green, 18th in SG: Off the Tee, 22nd in SG: Putting, and 37th in SG: Ball Striking. His overall game displays greater consistency this year compared to last. With his affinity for coastal courses and recent strong form, he’s poised for a solid performance this week.

Total Risk on Top 20s: 2.00 Units

Picks (Top 40):

  • Carson Young (+110) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.10 Units

Carson Young’s 2024 season began with a hiccup, missing the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii. However, he quickly rebounded at The American Express, securing a T17 finish. In his most recent starts, he finished T56 at the Farmers Insurance Open and T41 at the WM Phoenix Open.

This marks Young’s second appearance at Vidanta Vallarta, where he finished T15 last season. He has also demonstrated proficiency on other coastal courses, achieving a T3 at the Puerto Rico Open and a 9th place finish at the World Wide Technology Championship.

While Young may not match the longest hitters off the tee this week, his approach play compensates for it. Over the last 24 rounds, he ranks 9th in SG: Ball Striking and 17th in SG: Approach. Additionally, he excels with long irons, ranking 1st in Proximity Gained: 200+ Yards and 20th in Proximity Gained: 175-200 Yards. With his game trending positively and a history of success on coastal courses, he appears well-positioned for a strong showing this week.

Total Risk on Top 40s: 1.00 Unit

Picks (Top Canadian):

  • Taylor Pendrith (+125) – FanDuel
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.25 Units

I mentioned Pendrith earlier as one of my outright picks, but let’s analyze the rest of the field for the Top Canadian spot this week.

Mackenzie Hughes (+240) has had a decent start to the 2024 season. He secured a T25 at The Sentry, followed by a T64 at the Farmers, and a T71 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Last week at The Genesis Invitational, he finished T31. However, in his recent outings, he’s faced challenges with his irons and accuracy. Unlike Pendrith, he’s not known for his long drives off the tee, which could slightly hinder his performance. Despite a solid showing at the World Wide Technology Championship this season, his recent form suggests he might not outshine Pendrith here.

Ben Silverman (+600) kicked off the season with a strong T18 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii. However, he missed the cut at The American Express and managed a T56 in his most recent start. With no prior experience at Vidanta Vallarta, it’s hard to gauge his performance. Although his approach play has been commendable in recent events, struggles on and around the green might hold him back. Additionally, his shorter driving distance could pose a challenge this week.

Roger Sloan (+650) faced early exits at The American Express and Farmers Insurance Open in his first two starts of the 2024 season. He previously participated in this event once in 2022, where he missed the cut.

Stuart Macdonald (+1000) secured a spot in this event through the Open Qualifier. In his latest recorded outing, he finished T102 at the PGA Tour Q-School. While he’s played in two PGA Events before, his performance at this level hasn’t been remarkable. Although he’s a Mackenzie Tour (PGA TOUR Canada) regular and has recent victories under his belt, he might struggle to contend this week.

Total Risk on Top Canadian: 1.00 Unit

NBA player prop targets February 18th, 2024

Player props to target:

I’m keeping today real simple being that is the all star game tonight.

Here are my two picks. For the first one we are going with none other than Tyrese Haliburton. I am taking his over 15.5 points (-111, Fanduel) Tyrese is easily an up and coming star in this league. They are playing at Gainbridge Fieldhouse so you expect him to put on a SHOW in front of his fans.

My second pick is Jokic UNDER 6.5 points(-128, Fanduel). This line is super low for a reason. Jokic could care less about scoring in the all star game. I look for him to get his usual assists and rebounds, I just don’t see him wanting to score or caring to.

I am throwing in a bonus pick, I am going with Tyrese as ALL STAR MVP. I think he shows out tonight for the home crowd and we are going to see a lot of him. You can get that at +750 on Fanduel.

Best of luck to everyone! As always, feel free to follow me on Twitter (X) @MileHighScore. If you are wanting an app that not only tracks your bets, but allows you to shop for the best lines on the books you use download Betstamp and use code JOHNNYG at sign up! It truly makes a difference. Why bet it at -140, when a book out there has it at +110! Have a great day everyone!

FAU vs USF +5 O/U 147.5

College basketball comes early today as the Owls visit the Bulls.   What an amazing success story little FAU had last year, but it’s time to pump the breaks some on this top ranked team.  FAU is very good, but most teams, they are not perfect.  The Owls only rank 85th in defensive efficiency and 201st in free throws.  If this team comes out cold, they could be in some trouble vs some solid teams.   Amir Abdur-Rahim has done a fantastic job coaching the Bulls this year.  Although, they haven’t had many big wins, this team has only one loss since December 3rd.   The Bulls will win with defense and forcing turnovers.   They also have some matchup advantages over the Owls.  South Florida ranks 20th in adjusted three point percentage to FAU ranking 102nd in defending the long ball.  The Bulls should also be able to hit some midrange shots as well as you see below here on Haslametrics.

If FAU is winning by a few points late in the game, they could struggle finishing it out only shooting 71.4% from the charity stripe.    FAU is a top 22 shooting team, but on the road they about equal USF in shooting 53.7% effective FG to the Bulls at 52.3%.   FAU isn’t a stranger to losing away games dropping ones to Florida Gulf Coast, Charlotte and UAB.  I think we take the points here in a huge matchup that could affect both teams for post season placement.

South Florida +5 – 2.5 stars

SEC: LSU/SOUTH CAROLINA WINNER by Joe D’Amico

LSU Tigers @ South Carolina Gamecocks

Games 681/682.

12:30 PM PST/3:30 PM EST.

South Carolina -6.5/143

South Carolina sits in second place in the SEC at 9-3, just one-game behind Alabama. The Crimson Tide have a tough early matchup with the Aggies this morning. Regardless of the outcome, the Gamecocks must keep their foot on the gas here. This is an ideal matchup for them as they took down the Tigers, straight up in the last two meetings, and against the spread in the last three. Speaking of LSU, they have dropped six of their last seven straight up, and to be honest with you, they lose a little luster when on the road. They sport a dismal, 1-6 record this year as a guest. Meanwhile, South Carolina is a monster team. Overall, they possess a 21-4 mark, and that home this season, they are near flawless, at 13-1. As a matter of fact, following their only loss on their home floor back in mid-January at the hands of Georgia, the team has now rattled off four consecutive wins over the likes of Kentucky, Missouri, Mississippi, and Vanderbilt, missing four straight ATS covers by just a half-point. This team does not like losing. Nor do they take a defeat lightly. They come off a road loss, an embarrassing defeat at the hands of Auburn, 101-61. I expect this them to bounce back here with a vengeance and redeem themselves. They possess a frustrating defense that will completely shut down their opponent’s offense. Not only are they stifling, yielding just 65.4 points per game, but there are one of the best in the nation on the defensive glass. Take the Gamecocks. Thank you.

Texas vs Houston -10.5 O/U 131

This game looks like a normal Big 12 game on paper, but the truth is that it means much more to the kids playing it.  Houston survived at Texas in overtime getting the win 76-72 back on January 29th.  That game was a barn burner.  I think that today we have to look for some road revenge.   Let’s face it, the Cougars are overrated.  I am not going to try and argue that Houston doesn’t have the best defense in the NCAA.  They do, but what about that offense?  Houston ranks high in offensive efficiency but, but their adjusted FG% only ranks 144th in the nation and 234th in effective FG% when not adjusted for strength of schedule.  Texas ranks 11th in adjusted FG% and 18th in offensive efficiency.  If these horns get hot, they could put the Cougars once again in a very tough spot to finish this game.  One advantage that Texas does have here is near proximity scoring.  This Longhorns team ranks 10th in adjusted scoring by the rim to Houston ranking 99th in defending it.  Texas knows a few things here.  This win would really help their post season rankings, and it also will give them a claim to being the best team in Texas.   Houston has a revenge game with Iowa State on deck.

Texas +10.5 – 2.5 stars

Arizona State vs Arizona -18.5 O/U 157.5

This is actually a much better rivalry than people might think.  Last year, ASU lost to Arizona at home by nine points.   Later in the season, the Sun Devils went to Tucson and won outright. ASU does not have a bunch of matchup advantages here against the Cats, hence the big spread, but at least they have figured out their defense some ranking 48th in efficiency on Kenpom.  I also like how ASU won their last two games at a tough environment at Utah and home vs Oregon State.  Last year this team had to save Bobby Hurley’s job and they succeeded in that.  I could see a max effort here.  Rivalry games like this should not have large double digit spreads.

ASU +18.5 – 2 stars

NHL Picks & Player Props – February 14th, 2024 – Minnesota Wild vs Arizona Coyotes

We have three games taking place across the NHL tonight. I’ll break down some sides/totals along with a few player props to take a look at.

Sides/ Totals:

  • Florida Panthers (-130) – DraftKings

Player Props:

  • Brock Faber over 0.5 Points (-120) – BetMGM

Wild 2022-23 Report Cards: Brock Faber

Brock Faber has showcased an impressive rookie campaign, registering 4 goals and 29 assists, totaling 33 points in 52 games. His outstanding performance has positioned him alongside Connor Bedard, sharing the lead for the most points by a rookie this season.

Image

Brock Faber has been consistently productive, tallying at least one point in nine of his last ten games. Over this period, he has contributed two goals and eleven assists to his team’s efforts. Particularly impressive is his performance on the road, where he has secured at least one point in 60% of his games (15 out of 25). Moreover, Faber has continued his road success with points in nine of his last ten away games.

Image

Faber, anchoring Minnesota’s top defensive pairing, boasts the highest average ice time per game on the team, logging an impressive 24:58 minutes.

He also plays a pivotal role on Minnesota’s primary power-play unit, which is expected to capitalize on opportunities against Arizona, the second-most penalized team this season. Notably, Arizona’s penalty kill has struggled recently, allowing a goal in seven of their last ten games. Despite Minnesota’s power play ranking 16th for the season with a 20.57% conversion rate, their performance has surged in the last ten games to an impressive 30.56% conversion rate.

Although the Wild currently rank 16th in goals for per game this season, averaging 3.00, their offensive output has surged in their last ten games, averaging 3.80 goals per game. Conversely, Arizona ranks 18th for goals against per game this season, averaging 3.14, but has struggled defensively in their recent ten games, conceding an average of 3.70 goals.

  • Fabian Zetterlund under 0.5 Points (-135) – BetMGM

Sharks Sign Forward Fabian Zetterlund | NHL.com

Fabian Zetterlund ranks fourth on the Sharks’ roster for points, tallying 14 goals and 7 assists (21 points) across 51 games. Throughout the season, he has maintained an average of 0.41 points per game.

Image

Over the last ten games, Zetterlund has accumulated four points, consisting of three goals and one assist. However, it’s noteworthy that in one of those games, he managed to secure two points. Consequently, he has surpassed his total of 0.5 points in only three out of his last ten games.

Image

At home, Zetterlund has tallied at least one point in 41.7% of his games this season. On the road, that number drops to 25.9%.

The Sharks currently rank 31st in the league for goals scored per game this season, averaging 2.08. However, on the road, they’ve averaged 2.00. On the defensive end, Winnipeg leads the league in goals against per game, averaging 2.32. Over their last ten games, they’ve maintained a strong defensive stance, conceding an average of just 2.30 goals per game.

Tonight, Connor Hellebuyck, considered a top contender for the Vezina Trophy, will start for Winnipeg. He’s been exceptional this season, leading the league with a +25.0 Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx). Additionally, Hellebuyck has an impressive track record against the Sharks, allowing just three goals in one of his last five starts against them.

Given Winnipeg’s defensive prowess, they should be able to limit the Sharks’ scoring opportunities tonight. It’s reasonable to expect that the Sharks may score one or two goals at most against a formidable Winnipeg defense. Notably, the Sharks’ top line, featuring Zetterlund, Grandlund, and Ducalir, has only produced five points in their last five games.

2024 Genesis Invitational – Preview & Picks

The WM Phoenix Open encountered several challenges last week, including weather delays, unruly fan behavior, and a Sunday finish coinciding with the Super Bowl. Despite these issues, one positive highlight was the thrilling playoff between Nick Taylor and Charley Hoffman. Taylor showcased his ability to remain composed under pressure, clinching victory in a playoff for the second time (2023 RBC Candian Open).

Unfortunately for us, we had Nick Taylor T40 instead of an outright selection. In addition to cashing on Nick Taylor, we also hit Tom Hoge T40 as well. Our closest outrights were Sam Burns T3 and Jordan Speith T6. It’s been a constant theme this season with our outright selections finishing runner-up.

Nick Taylor continued the streak of longshots winning the early events. We’ve now had triple-digit winners in each of the past six events.

Tournament Winner Pre-Tournament Odds
WM Phoenix Open Nick Taylor 175-1
AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Wyndham Clark 100-1
Farmers Insurance Open Mattieu Pavon 140-1
The American Express Nick Dunlap 500-1
Sony Open in Hawaii Grayson Murray 400-1
The Sentry Chris Kirk 200-1

Let’s get into this week’s storylines…

The PGA Tour heads to the iconic Riviera Country Club for The Genesis Invitational. This will be the third Signature Event of the 2024 season.

This week, Tiger Woods, the Tournament host, is set to begin his 2024 season at Riviera Country Club, marking his official return to the PGA TOUR since the 2023 Masters following his recovery from right ankle surgery. Accompanying Woods on the course will be veteran caddie Lance Bennett, known for his previous work with golfers such as Sungjae Im and Davis Riley This season, Bennett will be working full-time for Tour rookie Adrien Dumont de Chassart. Additionally, Woods will unveil his new logo collaboration with Taylormade.

This year, the cut line has undergone a slight adjustment, introducing an additional qualification method for advancing to the weekend rounds. Players who rank within the top 50 (and ties) will secure automatic qualification for the third and fourth rounds of the Genesis Invitational. Moreover, any players within 10 shots of the lead will also advance to the subsequent rounds. This new format will be implemented not only at the Genesis Invitational but also at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the Memorial Tournament.

Max Homa and Adam Scott are the only defending champions in this limited-field event. Notably, the last two victors of this tournament, Jon Rahm and Joaquin Niemann, have both transitioned to the LIV Tour.

In 2009, the tournament introduced an unrestricted exemption aimed at honoring a player who represents the advancement of diversity in golf. This exemption, known as the Charlie Sifford Memorial Exemption, pays tribute to the legacy of Charlie Sifford, the first African-American golfer to earn PGA Tour membership in the early 1960s. Chase Johnson, recipient of the Charlie Sifford Award this year, will be competing in the tournament. Johnson made his PGA TOUR debut at the 2021 Memorial Tournament and has since played in three other PGA TOUR events.

An exciting twist for this event is that any player who hits a hole-in-one will be rewarded with a Genesis vehicle. Last year, sponsor invite Tae Hoon Kim achieved this feat with an ace on the par-3 16th hole.

  • Friday: Mostly Cloudy 68 F, 9 mp/h WSW, 69% Humidity, 5% Chance of Rain

  • Sunday: Rain 60 F, 11 mp/h SE, 86% Humidity, 73% Chance of Rain

Similar to the previous two tournaments, weather conditions are expected to influence this week’s event. With a smaller field compared to the past two events, there’s hope that the impact on play will be minimized. Currently, rain is forecasted for Sunday, but hopefully, it won’t disrupt the competition too much. Weather has played a significant role in the past, such as in 2021 when play was suspended due to severe winds.

Course/ Tournament History:

The Genesis Invitational marks the culmination of the West Coast Swing before we head to Mexico next week for the Mexico Open at Vidanta.

Originally debuting in 1926 as the Los Angeles Open, the tournament underwent several name changes over the years. In 1987, Nissan assumed sponsorship, leading to its renaming as the Nissan Open. In 1995, the “Los Angeles” tag was dropped, resulting in the Nissan Open moniker. From 2008 to 2016, it was known as the Northern Trust Open until Genesis became the primary sponsor in 2017. This sponsorship shift prompted another name change to the Genesis Open, which in 2020 evolved into the Genesis Invitational. The transition to an invitational format elevated the event’s status, boasting a more elite field, larger prize purse, and extended winner’s exemption.

Riviera Country Club, hosting the tournament since 1929, has been the venue for 59 editions, albeit non-consecutively. Since 1999, it has served as the exclusive site for the event. Additionally, the club is set to host the 2028 Olympics, with Los Angeles as the host city. Notably, the 2031 U.S. Open is also slated to take place at Riviera Country Club, adding to its illustrious history. The venue has previously hosted three Majors, including the 1948 U.S. Open, 1983 PGA Championship, and 1995 PGA Championship.

  • Most Wins at Event:
    • 4, Lloyd Mangrum (1956, 1953, 1951, 1949), Macdonald Smith (1934, 1932, 1929, 1928)
  • 72-Hole Record:
    • 264, Lanny Wadtkins (1985)
  • 18-Hole Record (Riviera Country Club):
    • 61, Ted Tryba (Round 3, 1999)

Course Guide/ Scorecard:

Riviera Country Club was originally designed by George Thomas in 1927. In 1992, the course underwent a renovation overseen by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. It’s a Par 71 that’s listed at 7,322 yards. It features four Par 3’s, eleven Par 4’s, and three Par 5’s.

In terms of length, Riviera Country Club is average ranking 20 out of 44. Despite its location on the West Coast, the elevation changes aren’t all that significant. However, what makes it so difficult is the narrow fairways and firm greens. Despite the fairways being extremely narrow, the rough isn’t all that penal since it’s only 2″. Riviera and Torrey Pines are the only two courses on Tour that feature Kikuyu fairways and rough which is something to watch out for. Given the fast Poa Annua greens, the GIR % is roughly 10% lower here than the Tour Average over the last 5 years. The Poa Annua greens can be extremely challenging for some players as they run fast and can be unpredictable. The average 3 putts per round is 7-8% higher at Riviera Country Club.

The four Par 3’s range from 166 to 236 yards. Last year, No. 6 and No. 16 were the only two Par 3’s to have a scoring average under par.

No. 4, 236 yards, Par 3: “The first real test on the front nine comes at the par 3 fourth. Wind conditions can make a hard tee shot nearly impossible when the gusts are blowing. The green, guarded by a large bunker in the front, slopes severely from right to left. Long putts are common on the fourth hole.”

Old World Golf at Riviera - GolfDashBlog | Accelerate Your Golf Performance

No. 6, 199 yards, Par 3: “Some rounds, the sixth hole is a straightforward par 3. In other rounds, it shows its teeth. The two-tiered green is enough to cause problems for players as landing your tee shot on the right level is of utmost importance. Add in the difficulty of the island bunker. Positioned perfectly in the center of the two-tiered putting surface, avoid having to putt around the bunker in the middle of the green.”

There are eleven Par 4’s at Riviera Country Club with the majority of those holes ranging between 450 and 500 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest Par 4 on the course last year was No. 12 (+0.34).

Is Riviera Country Club's 10th hole the greatest short par-4 in the world?

No. 10, 315 Yards, Par 4: “Riviera’s most iconic hole, the 10th has been called ‘one of the best 10th holes in major championship golf’ by Jack Nicklaus, a winner of a record 18 majors. The drivable par 4 measures only 315 yards but the mental games it plays on a player can have lasting effects on their round. Sure, eagle and birdie is possible, but nearly just as easy is bogey and double. Players have expressed thinking about the 10th hole as early as the eighth green, a mental giant for a short par 4.”

No. 15, 487 Yards, Par 4: “The tee shot requires a power fade to turn the corner of the doglegged fairway. The approach shot is made more difficult down the stretch as the hole plays into the setting sun later in the day. A two-tiered green can give players trouble even once they find the putting surface. While it’s unlikely players find a birdie on the 15th to win the tournament, a bogey on the 15th can lose the tournament.”

Image

Hole No. 15 at Riviera has been a hot topic the past few seasons with players, specifically Hovland. taking a different approach to the hole. Instead of trying to avoid the deep bunker along the right side of the fairway, Hovland aimed at the center of the 17th fairway off the tee. To counter this last year, they had added a scoreboard in that opening but that didn’t seem to matter as Viktor still hit his drive down No. 17.

No. 18, 475 Yards, Par 4: “Riviera starts with an iconic hole and it ends in the same fashion. The 18th is one of golf’s most unique and recognizable finishing holes. a blind tee shot from drastically below the level of the fairway means players must carry the hill to reach safely. If the drive can also turn a corner at the top of the hill, the approach shot becomes much easier. The natural amphitheater below the clubhouse provides the ultimate stadium-style finish to the round and tournament.”

There are three Par 5s on the course, No. 1, No. 11, and No. 17. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2023. Hole No. 1 was the easiest hole on the course last year with a scoring average of 0.669 below par.

No. 1, 503 yards, Par 5: “Sitting in the shadow of the clubhouse, the first tee is elevated 75 feet above the fairway and tempts players with what appears to be a wide fairway. Big hitters beware, driver is too much club on this opening par 5. Most players choose an iron off the tee to set up their approach shot. Annually the first hole plays as the easiest on the course.”

No. 17, 590 yards, Par 5: “While it might be the longest hole at Riviera, the 17th plays into the strength of the modern TOUR player. A powerful drive followed by a long iron makes the green reachable in two. Being on the putting surface with a chance for eagle provides insurance from the two-tiered green that slopes from back to front, creating difficult downhill putts. If you can play from below the hole location, your chances of scoring increase significantly.”

The Field/ Odds:

This year, the Genesis Invitational field is comprised of the top 50 in last season’s FedExCup standings, the top 10 finishers in the FedExCup Fall standings (Aon Next 10), the top player in the Race to Dubai, the 2024 season winners, the top 30 in the OWGR, and any sponsor exemptions.

There will be 70 players competing in this year’s tournament. Out of the 67 players to automatically qualify for this event, only Mattieu Pavon and Justin Rose have elected to skip the Genesis Invitational. Eighteen of the top twenty players in the Official World Golf Ranking are in the field. Here are the current favorites in this week’s event:

Scottie Scheffler (+650) fell short of victory at the WM Phoenix Open for the third consecutive year, settling for a T3 finish at TPC Scottsdale last week. In his three other starts this year, Scheffler secured a T6 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a T17 placement at The American Express, and an impressive T5 finish at The Sentry. Having participated in the event for the past four seasons, Scheffler has consistently landed inside the top 20 in his last three appearances. His strongest performance at Riviera Country Club was in 2022, where he clinched a T7 finish.

Rory McIlroy (+900) kicked off his 2024 season at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am two weeks ago, securing a T66 finish. Before that, he showcased his skills overseas on the DP World Tour, where he notably clinched a runner-up position at the Dubai Invitational and emerged victorious at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic. With seven previous appearances in this event, McIlroy boasts five top-20 finishes. However, his performance on the greens last year led to a challenging T29 finish.

Viktor Hovland (+1200) ended the 2023 season on a tear winning the BMW Championship and TOUR Championship. Recently he withdrew from the WM Phoenix Open last week after a less-than-ideal start to the 2024 season. He’s only played in two events to start the year finishing T22 at The Sentry and T58 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. This will be his fourth appearance at Riviera Country Club with previous finishes of T20, T4, and T5.

Xander Schauffele (+1400) opted out of participating in the WM Phoenix Open last week following a T54 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. In his three prior starts this season, he secured a T9 position at the Farmers Insurance Open, followed by an impressive T3 finish at The American Express, and another strong showing with a T10 placement at The Sentry. With a collegiate background from San Diego State University, Schauffele has demonstrated success at Riviera in the past. Across his six appearances at this event, he boasts four top-20 finishes. However, his performance dipped last year, marking his lowest finish at the tournament with a T33 result.

Max Homa (+1600) experienced a setback at the WM Phoenix Open last week, missing the cut. Prior to this, his last missed cut was in June at TPC River Highlands (Travelers). In his three other starts this season, he finished T66 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, T13 at the Farmers Insurance Open, and T14 at The Sentry. Notably, Homa boasts an impressive course history at Riviera Country Club. In each of his last four starts at the Genesis, he has landed inside the top 10. During this period, he clinched victory in 2021 and secured a runner-up position last year.

Patrick Cantlay (+1600) will aim for his first victory since the 2022 BMW Championship at a course where he has previously excelled. This marks his ninth outing at Riviera, where he has secured top-20 finishes in four of his last five appearances. Notably, he achieved his best result last year with a commendable 3rd-place finish. However, in his four starts this season, Cantlay has yet to crack the top 10. In his four starts this season, Cantlay has yet to finish inside the top 10. His performances include a T11 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a T56 placement at the Farmers Insurance Open, a T52 finish at The American Express, and a T12 finish at The Sentry.

Projected Final Score

  • 72 Hole Winning Score – 268.5/ -15.5 (-110/-110) – SportsBook

Over the past two years, the winning score for this event has consistently fallen below 15.5, with Jon Rahm finishing at -17 and Joaquin Niemann at -19. However, looking back over the last 24 editions dating back to 2000, the winning score has only dipped below -15.5 on six occasions.

While weather conditions can sometimes influence the tournament, the projected forecast appears favorable, aside from some expected rain on Sunday. In the previous two iterations of the Genesis Invitational, favorable weather conditions undoubtedly contributed to lower winning scores. Contrasting this with the 2021 and 2019 editions, characterized by windy conditions exceeding 20 mph on specific days, the winning score surpassed 268.5.

In terms of the field’s caliber, this year’s event showcases the lowest field rating observed in the past three years. The field rating stood at 695.00 in 2022, declined to 390.70 last year, and further dropped to 324.26 this year.

Picks (Outrights):

  • Justin Thomas (+1600) – FanDuel
    • Risk: 0.50 to win 8.00 Units

After enduring a challenging stretch throughout much of the 2023 season, Thomas has experienced a resurgence in form since the Wyndham Championship. Since that pivotal event, he has consistently delivered strong performances, securing top-15 finishes in six PGA Tour events and one DP World Tour event. His impressive streak in the 2024 season commenced with a solid T3 finish at The American Express, where he gained strokes in every category. Subsequently, he continued to shine with a T6 placement at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and most recently, a commendable T12 finish at the WM Phoenix Open.

Thomas boasts a commendable track record at Riviera Country Club, having notched four top-20 finishes in his last six appearances at the venue. His standout performance came in 2019 when he held a commanding five-stroke lead heading into the final round, ultimately securing a second-place finish.

Reflecting on his 2023 season, Thomas has exhibited marked improvement across various aspects of his game. His proficiency off the tee has been particularly noteworthy, and his iron play appears to be returning to its peak form. Additionally, his short game has been a key asset, as evidenced by his impressive ranking of 6th in the field over the past 36 rounds. Thomas also excels in critical areas such as Par 4 Scoring (450-500 Yards), Par 5 Scoring (550-600 Yards), and Proximity Gained (150-200 Yards). While his last victory dates back to the 2022 PGA Championship, his recent performances indicate that he is on the cusp of capturing his 16th PGA Tour victory.

  • Sam Burns (+2200) – FanDuel
    • Risk: 0.37 to win 8.14 Units

We were on Burns last week at the WM Phoenix Open, where he put up a strong performance, ultimately finishing tied for third. This extends his impressive streak of top-10 finishes to three consecutive starts.

Despite facing challenges in his previous two appearances at Riviera Country Club, resulting in missed cuts, Burns has shown promise at the Genesis Invitational with notable finishes, including a third-place result in 2021 and a respectable T32 finish in 2020.

Moreover, Burns boasts a remarkable track record at Innisbrook, a course similar to this week’s venue, securing victories in 2021 and 2022 at the Valspar Championship. Notably, he clinched a sixth-place finish at the Valspar Championship in 2023.

In the past two events, Burns has been great with his irons. At the WM Phoenix Open, he ranked 20th in the field in SG: Approach, and at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am he ranked 17th in the field in that category. In addition to his iron play improving, he’s also been much better on the greens gaining strokes putting in each of his last four starts. Last week he gained the most strokes off the tee in his PGA Tour career. With his game trending positively, Burns stands a chance at contending for victory this week, provided his short game remains solid.

  • Adam Scott (+3300) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 0.25 to win 8.25 Units

At 42 years old, Adam Scott continues to showcase his enduring prowess on the golf course. Commencing his 2024 season overseas on the DP World Tour, he notched three consecutive top-10 finishes before returning to the PGA TOUR at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, where he secured a T20 placement. Last week, at the WM Phoenix Open, Scott sustained his impressive form, culminating in a T8 finish.

Returning to Riviera, a course with which he is intimately acquainted and where he has tasted success in the past, Scott looks to capitalize on his familiarity. With victories in 2020 and 2005, coupled with runner-up finishes in 2016 and 2006, Riviera holds a special place in Scott’s golfing journey. His most recent standout performance at the venue was in 2022, where he clinched a commendable T4 finish.

In terms of his recent form, Scott appears to be firing on all cylinders, particularly off the tee, where he has demonstrated consistent improvement over his last three outings. His iron play has also shown promise, ranking 3rd in the field at the WM Phoenix Open and 12th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Additionally, over the past 36 rounds, Scott has showcased his prowess around the green, ranking 20th in SG: Around the Green, and his proficiency on Poa greens, ranking 6th in SG: Putting.

With his current form and formidable course history at Riviera, Scott appears poised to contend for his first PGA Tour victory since his triumph at this tournament in 2020.

  • Sahith Theegala (+3500) – FanDuel/ DraftKings
    • Risk: 0.23 to win 8.05 Units

Theegala kicked off the 2024 season with a stellar performance, securing a runner-up finish at The Sentry. However, he faced challenges in his subsequent tournaments, missing the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii and landing a T64 spot at the Farmers Insurance Open. Despite these setbacks, he found his footing again at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, concluding with a commendable T20 finish. His momentum continued at the WM Phoenix Open, where he led after the first two rounds and ultimately secured a 5th-place finish.

This week marks Theegala’s fifth appearance at the Genesis Invitational. While his initial two outings at Riviera Country Club resulted in modest T49 and T48 finishes, his recent performances have been notably stronger, with T7 and T6 finishes in his last two appearances.

Theegala’s recent showings suggest an upward trajectory in his game. Notably, at the WM Phoenix Open, he ranked 4th in SG: Tee to Green, 5th in SG: Approach, 15th in SG: Putting, and 16th in SG: Off the Tee. Despite losing strokes around the green in two of his last three events, he has gained strokes in that category in each of his four prior starts at Riveria. Furthermore, over the last 36 rounds, he ranks an impressive 3rd in the field in Scrambling Gained.

  • Matthew Fitzpatrick (+4000) – FanDuel
    • Risk: 0.20 to win 8.00 Units

Fitzpatrick concluded the 2023 season with notable performances, securing a T9 finish at the TOUR Championship and claiming the runner-up spot at the BMW Championship. Following the FedEx Cup playoffs, he ventured overseas to compete on the DP World Tour, where he clinched victory at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. In his lone start of the FedExCup Fall Swing, Fitzpatrick finished T4.

The 2024 season has presented a mix of highs and lows for Fitzpatrick, showcasing both his prowess and challenges on the course. He commenced the season with a respectable T14 finish at Kapalua. However, he encountered difficulties, failing to make the cut at the Sony Open in Hawaii and securing a T58 placement at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. Nonetheless, he displayed signs of improvement last week at the WM Phoenix Open, concluding with a solid T15 finish.

This week marks Fitzpatrick’s fourth appearance at Riviera Country Club. While he missed the cut last year, he finished T5 in 2021 and T30 in 2020.

Despite his inconsistent performance this season, Riviera’s course characteristics align well with Fitzpatrick’s strengths, particularly his ball-striking ability. His recent improvement, notably in his performance off the tee at the WM Phoenix Open, suggests a promising outlook for his performance this week.

Picks (Top 10):

  • Ludvig Aberg (+160) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.60 Units

The two-time Ben Hogan Award Winner is set to make his tournament debut this week at the Genesis Invitational. Despite being less than a year into his professional career, Aberg has already clinched a PGA TOUR victory. Following his participation in the winning European Ryder Cup team, he returned to the States for the FedEx Fall Swing, where he showcased his talent with impressive finishes of T13 or better in four consecutive events. Aberg capped off this remarkable run with a victory at the RSM Classic.

While Aberg faced some challenges in his first two events of the season, finishing T47 at The Sentry and T30 at the Sony Open, he quickly regained his form in his last two starts. He delivered a strong performance with a T9 finish at the Farmers Insurance Open and a runner-up placement at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

At just 24 years old, Aberg has already established himself as one of the premier ball strikers on Tour. Although he has yet to play at Riviera, his skill set is well-suited to the course. While debutants historically haven’t won this event, notable exceptions like Viktor Hovland in 2021 and Young in 2022, who both secured top-10 finishes in their debut appearances at Riviera, suggest that Aberg has the potential to make a significant impact.

Total Risk on Top 10s: 1.00 Unit

[Just missed: Jordan Spieth]

Picks (Top 20):

  • Jason Day (+130) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.30 Units

Last year, Jason Day made his sixth appearance at Riviera Country Club, achieving an impressive T9 finish, marking his strongest performance at the event thus far.

In the previous year, Day secured his first PGA Tour victory since 2018, along with a commendable T2 placement at The Open Championship. Continuing his momentum from the strong finish in the 2023 season, Day kicked off the current season with a solid T10 position at The Sentry. However, he faced a slight setback in his following two events, landing T34 at The American Express and missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open. Nevertheless, he showcased a resurgence in his recent outing, securing a respectable T6 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Day’s remarkable iron play was evident in his previous start, ranking 14th in the field. If he can maintain this level of performance, he is poised for success this week, particularly with his proficiency in the short game. Even if he encounters challenges with his irons, his adeptness around the green should ensure his competitiveness in the event, as demonstrated in his performance last year.

  • Nicolai Højgaard (+150) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.50 Units

Nicolai Højgaard, a notable member of the European Ryder Cup team and a three-time champion on the DP World Tour, is set to make his debut appearance at The Genesis Invitational. His most recent triumph on the DP World Tour occurred in November at the DP World Tour Championship. Following this victory, he secured a T25 finish at the Dubai Invitational and a T7 placement at the Hero Dubai Classic. Beginning his rookie season strongly, Højgaard finished runner-up at the Farmers Insurance Open, followed by a T31 placement at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Despite lacking prior experience at Riviera Country Club, Højgaard’s skill set aligns well with the course demands. He demonstrates strength in various key aspects crucial for this week’s tournament. Notably, his impressive driving distance positions him competitively. Additionally, his iron play stands out, having consistently gained strokes in this area over his last six starts. While his performance around and on the green may fluctuate, Højgaard exhibits proficiency on Poa annua greens, evident from his recent success in gaining strokes in his last two appearances on such surfaces. While uncertain if Højgaard will secure his inaugural PGA Tour victory this week, his potential contention in Sunday’s final round would not be surprising.

  • Kurt Kitayama (+188) – BetMGM
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.88 Units

Kurt Kitayama encountered a missed cut in his inaugural appearance at The Genesis Invitational last year. However, following this event, he secured his breakthrough victory on the PGA Tour at Bay Hill.

Beginning the 2024 season with a T29 finish at The Sentry, Kitayama’s performance steadily improved. He achieved a T24 placement at the Sony Open in Hawaii, followed by a T39 finish at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and most recently, a T8 position at the WM Phoenix Open. Impressively, since the Genesis Scottish Open last year, he has not missed a single cut across nine events.

While struggling with his play off the tee and around the green last year when Kitayama missed the cut, both aspects have shown considerable improvement this season. Furthermore, his iron play has demonstrated increased consistency, with Kitayama gaining strokes in each of his first four events of the 2024 season.

Marquette vs Butler -4 O/U 153.5

Super Tuesday kicks off with an early Big East Matchup between the Golden Eagles and the Bulldogs.   I find it interesting that Marquette is such a large road favorite here.  Sure they had a good non-conference but having to lay points against a team on the road isn’t exactly in their wheelhouse.  The Golden Eagles are not a good rebounding team ranking 284th in the nation to Butler at 139th.  I am also concerned that they only shoot 72.5% free throws to Butler ranking 6th in the nation at 79%.   This isn’t good for road favorites.  Butler has been a different team since mid-January winning 5 out of their last six games.  If Butler can just limit their three point game, they should have some advantages down low in second chance points as well as shooting the long ball themselves ranking 51st in adjusted three point percentage.   I think this game is too close for four points.

Butler +4 – 2.5 stars
