Team Overview

  • Purdue Boilermakers: Ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll and No. 8 in KenPom rankings. They are 17-5 overall and 9-2 in Big Ten play. Purdue has won nine of their last ten games and is known for their strong defense, allowing only 67.9 points per game.
  • Iowa Hawkeyes: Ranked No. 66 in KenPom rankings. They are 13-8 overall and 4-6 in Big Ten play. Iowa has struggled recently, losing four of their last five games. Unfortunately, their leading scorer, best defender and rebounder, Owen Freeman, is out for the season due to a hand injury.

  • Purdue: Trey Kaufman-Renn (18.4 PPG, 6.2 RPG), Braden Smith (15.8 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 8.8 APG), Fletcher Loyer (14 PPG).

Prediction

Given Purdue’s strong defense and Iowa’s recent struggles, it might seem like a low-scoring game. However, both teams have efficient offenses. Purdue is 28th in the nation in three-point percentage, while Iowa is 12th. This suggests that both teams can score from beyond the arc, potentially leading to a higher-scoring game.  I also like how Iowa ranks 8th in home/away splits on Haslametrics.   Iowa ranks 4th in effective FG% and 58.1%.  Purdue ranks 20th at 56.5%.

Argument for the Over 14.5

  1. Efficient Offenses: Both teams have efficient offenses, with Purdue ranking 30th in adjusted offensive efficiency and Iowa ranking 26th.
  2. Three-Point Shooting: Both teams shoot well from three-point range, which can quickly add up points.
  3. Purdue’s Defense: While Purdue has a strong defense, they have allowed an average of 67.9 points per game, which is much lower than Iowa’s average points per game of 85.7.
  4. Home Court Advantage: Iowa will have the home court advantage, and sometimes a high-scoring game can be expected in such scenarios.  I also think that Iowa will dictate the pace in this game at home.   I expect over 71 possessions per team in this game.

Verdict:  I know that Owen Freeman is out, but the Hawkeyes will miss him more on defense than they will on offense.  I can see Purdue getting plenty of points here, but the Hawkeyes will rally in a spot where they must win.

Wisconsin vs Northwestern +2 O/U 148.5

This is a nice little big 10 rivalry for early in the day.  Sconnie is going to Evanston to face the Cats.   Now Wisconsin has not been great down low against many teams this year, but the good news for the Badgers is that Northwestern isn’t all that good down low either only ranking 160th in near proximity buckets.   The Badgers are coming off of a rough outing at Maryland, where they uncharacteristically turned the ball over too many times.  They went ice cold at the end.  Northwestern is coming off of a much worst loss at home vs Rutgers.   I do not think that the Cats can get it done here.  Wisconsin has significant advantages shooting the rock ranking 34th in effecitve FG% to Northwestern ranking 220th.   The Badgers have more talent as well looking at the John’s.   Blackwell and Tonje should be able to take cover this game.  Lay the short points with Wisconsin.

Bonus Play:   BYU/UCF over 156.5 – 2 stars.   UCF games are 13-7 to the over.   They play no defense while BYU ranks 15th in offensive efficiency.  The Knights also rank 28th in adjusted tempo.  They love to run and gun.  BYU will run with them today.

Dayton vs St. Louis PK O/U 145

This is a big game in the A10 where the Billikens are hoping to move up in the rankings against against the Flyers.  Saint Louis has been an improving team since that bad home loss to Wofford and at Grand Canyon in mid-December.  Since then, this team won seven of their last 9 games.   They are 5-0 in home games since that time as well.   Dayton on the other hand has been on the senior slide since their huge home Marquette win in mid-December.   Marquette was in a let down spot after beating in-state rival Wisconsin, and the market is looking much to highly on this.  Well Dayton is on the road here, and they are only 1-3 in road conference games.   According to Haslametrics, Saint Louis will have a huge near proximity advantage ranking 17th to Dayton ranking only 261st in defending close to the rim.    Dayton’s only real offensive advantage lies in their effective FG% at 54.3%, but that drops down on the road to 52.4%.   The Bill’s are at 57.3% at home.  Take Saint Louis.

Illinois vs Nebraska +3.5 O/U 155.5

Well this total says this game might be high flying.  Nebraska is a desperate team right now as they have lost six big 10 tgames in a row including a blowout at Wisconsin.   If this team wants to make the tournament, they need to turn it around.  The Illini comes in after getting revenge on an in-state rival in Northwestern.   From a Matchup perspective, the orange men of Illinois plays a pretty solid defense ranking 8th in adjusted efficiency on Haslametrics.   This team doesn’t score well from downtown as they only rank 260th in three point shots, yet they like to fire away ranking 21st in three point attempts.   Illinois has been a team that feeds near the rim, but that is also now a massive problem as the Illini lost their best big man in Tomislav Ivisic to mono.   I am not sure if Tom has kissed too many college girls, but you can kiss those 8.5 rebounds and 13 points per game away.  This will be the third game that he has missed.   With the big man gone, the advantage down low somewhat swings to the Corn as this team will use their big men to score down low and rebound the basketball. I think that Nebraska wins this one outright, but I will take the points to be safe.
