Prediction:
- We saw this game just about a few weeks ago when the Wildcats went into Tennessee and embarrassed them on their home court.
- This is a road revenge spot for the Vols, but I am not sure that they have the horses to get it done.
- Tennessee has been playing good basketball, but they have also been fortunate to play a very banged up Alabama team, as well as overrated Ole Miss and Georgia.
- The Problem with the Vols is that they turn the ball over quite frequently at 18.5 % of possessions ranking 278th in the NCAA. This doesn’t bode well on the road. The Vols also can’t shoot three pointers all that well ranking 105th in the nation. Their free throws are only at 69.2%.
- The Wildcats have had their Lumps, but this team has gotten it together at home shooting 56% effective FG. The Vols only shoot 49.8% on the road.
- According to Haslametrics, the Vols only rank 339th in home road splits to Kentucky at number 6 in the nation.
- The Cats have the size down low to bang with the Vols. I am taking Kentucky here to get it done again.

-
Records:
-
Illinois: 20โ3 (11โ1 Big Ten)
-
Michigan State: 19โ4 (9โ3 Big Ten)
-
-
Entering with 12 straight wins, including dominant performances over Nebraska and Northwestern.
-
Known for having the most efficient offense in Big Ten play.
-
Recently crushed Northwestern 84โ44, signaling theyโre peaking at the right time.
-
Once riding high at 18โ2, MSU has slipped into a familiar lateโJanuary/earlyโFebruary slump.
-
Their defense was previously the best in the nation, but recent losses โ including a surprising one to Minnesota โ have raised concerns.
-
Point guard Jeremy Fears has struggled lately, and his performance is a major swing factor.
-
Illinois brings the conferenceโs most efficient offense, while MSU counters with what has been the Big Tenโs top defense โ though that defense has shown cracks recently.
-
If Illinois pushes tempo and forces MSU into rotations, the Spartansโ recent defensive inconsistency could be exposed.
-
MSUโs offense has been inconsistent, but they have multiple players capable of big nights (Fears, Kohler, Cooper, Carr).
-
Illinois has shown vulnerability when they fall into cold spells โ their previous meeting saw them miss 19 straight shots, leading to a 79โ65 loss.
-
Points: K. Wagler โ 17.9 PPG, 48.0% FG, 80.7% FT
-
Rebounds: D. Mirkovic โ 8.2 RPG
-
Assists: K. Wagler โ 4.3 APG
-
Points: J. Fears Jr. โ 14.7 PPG, 44.8% FG, 89.6% FT
-
Rebounds: J. Kohler โ 9.1 RPG
-
Assists: J. Fears Jr. โ 8.9 APG
-
Fearsโ decisionโmaking and efficiency will be under the microscope.
-
Illinoisโ backcourt has been steadier and more explosive recently.
-
Illinois thrives when they dictate tempo.
-
MSU needs to slow the game down and lean on their defensive identity.
-
Breslin Center is one of the toughest environments in the Big Ten.
-
MSU is a slight favorite largely because of this advantage.
- This game is more about what you believe.ย Illinois has the number 1 offense in the league in efficiency in Kenpom, with the 19th ranked defense, while Sparty has the number 46 offense and the number 4 defense.
- Tom Izzo has gotten his kids up for these Illinois games covering the last three spreads and also winning outright in all three as well.
- I just think that the Illini are the least talked about team in sports, and the kids know that.
- Illinois has the much better front court here with their big men David Mirkovic and Tomislav Ivisic.ย The Illini will clean up the boards quite well to matchup against the Illini’s average shooting at 103rd in effective FG%.
- I like Illinois to win a close game and prove that they are the top team to bet in the Big 10.
