NHL Global Series Preview & Picks – October 4th, 2024
The stage is set for the 2024 NHL Global Series, kicking off the 2024-25 season with an exciting Friday matchup between the Buffalo Sabres and the New Jersey Devils. This Friday showdown marks the start of a two-game series at O2 Arena in Prague, Czech Republic. I’ll be breaking down this matchup and sharing my best bets!

Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres were busy this offseason, aiming to build on their recent progress and make a strong push for the playoffs in the 2024-25 season. Their focus was on bolstering offensive depth, leading to several key additions, including Ryan McLeod, Sam Lafferty, Jason Zucker, Beck Malenstyn, and Nicolas Aube-Kubel. Despite these changes, the Sabres’ core of young talent remains intact, highlighted by Rasmus Dahlin, who was recently named captain, along with Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch, J.J. Peterka, Dylan Cozens, and Owen Power.
In addition to the roster changes, the Sabres made a significant coaching move by parting ways with head coach Don Granato. Former Sabres player and coach Lindy Ruff was brought back to lead the team. Ruff, who coached Buffalo from 1997 to 2013, returns after a four-year stint with the New Jersey Devils, where he was let go following a season in which the Devils missed the playoffs. Ruff’s return marks his first game behind the Sabres’ bench in over a decade.
New Jersey Devils
The New Jersey Devils were also active this offseason as they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2023-24 campaign that was plagued by injuries. One of their biggest offseason priorities was improving their goaltending, which struggled last season. They addressed this by parting ways with Vitek Vanecek and Akira Schmid and bringing in Jacob Markstrom and Jake Allen. On defense, they strengthened their blue line with the additions of Brett Pesce and Brenden Dillon. Up front, the Devils added valuable depth with Stefan Noesen, Tomas Tatar, and Paul Cotter.
Following the departure of Lindy Ruff, the Devils hired Sheldon Keefe as their new head coach. Keefe previously coached the Toronto Maple Leafs from 2019-2024, leading them to the playoffs in each of his five seasons. However, Toronto only made it past the first round once, during the 2022-23 season. Keefe will look to bring his experience and winning pedigree to New Jersey as they aim to return to playoff contention.

The matchup between the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils is likely to be a high-scoring contest, given the offensive firepower both teams bring to the ice. The Sabres, led by dynamic scorers like Tage Thompson, Alex Tuch, and Rasmus Dahlin, are known for their aggressive offensive approach. On the other side, the Devils, with stars like Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier, can go toe-to-toe in creating scoring chances. Early-season games often see defenses and goaltenders still settling in, increasing the potential for goals. With both teams playing fast-paced, high-octane hockey, this game could easily turn into a scoring showcase.

J.J. Peterka is entering the 2024-25 season with the Buffalo Sabres, ready for a potential breakout year. After showcasing his offensive skills in previous seasons, the young winger is expected to take on a larger role within Buffalo’s dynamic forward group. Known for his speed, creativity, and strong two-way play, Peterka has the tools to excel both offensively and defensively. Now positioned on the Sabres’ top line alongside Alex Tuch and Tage Thompson, as well as on the top Powerplay unit, he’ll get plenty of ice time and opportunities. Peterka has also thrived against the Devils, registering at least one point in four of his last five games against them.

NFL Week 4 Misleading Final Scores
The Rams out-gained the Bears 322-264 yet lost 24-18. A 2-0 turnover ratio did them in.
The Saints out-gained the Falcons 366-315 yet lost 26-24. A 2-1 turnover ratio and bad special teams did the Saints in.
The Packers yards were a lot of garbage time.
The Steelers out-gained the Colts 404 to 358 yet lost 27-24. A 2-0 turnover ratio did in the Steelers.
The Jets out-gained the Broncos 248-186 yet lost 10-9. Equal turnovers but 5 sacks and bad special teams got the Jets.
The Panthers out-gained the Bengals 375 to 373 yet lost 34-24. Poor red zone efficiency and bad tackling got the Panthers.
The Texans out-gained the Jags 435 to 313 yet only won 24-20. A 1-0 turnover ratio and 12 penalties hurt the Texans.
College Football Week 6 Betting Spots
Let Down Spots:
- Alabama could be a little flat next week at Vanderbilt after beating Georgia.
- Miami could be sloppy at Cal after beating Virginia Tech in a huge comeback.
- Duke could flatten out vs Georgia Tech after beating rival North Carolina.
- Louisiana at Southern Miss looks gross after they beat Wake Forest.
- Old Dominion at Coastal Carolina after beating Bowling Green as a big dog.
- Rutgers at Nebraska after beating Washington is one for sure.

College Football Week 5 Misleading Final Scores
Utah out-gained Arizona 364 to 358 yet lost 23-10. A 2-1 turnover ratio and the Cam Rising injury saga continues.
Cincinnati out-gained Texas Tech 555 to 482 yet lost 44-41. A 2-1 turnover ratio and poor red zone defense got the Bearcats.
Rice out-gained Charlotte 463 to 304 yet lost 21-20. A 1-0 turnover ratio and poor fourth down efficiency killed the Owls.
Troy out-gained Louisiana Monroe 272 to 247 yet lost 13-9. They won the turnover battle 1-0, but terrible red zone efficiency slashed the Trojans.
Bowling Green out-gained Old Dominion 399 to 333 yet lost 30-27. A 1-0 turnover ratio and poor rushing the football killed the Falcons.
UTSA out-gained East Carolina 456 to 341 yet lost 30-20. A 3-2 turnover ratio and poor red zone defense flattened the Road Runners.
Louisville out-gained Notre Dame 395 to 280 yet lost 31-24. A 3-2 turnover ratio and poor special teams killed the Cardinal. Bad quarterback play as well by Tyler Shough.
Auburn out-gained Oklahoma 482 to 291 yet lost 27-21. A 1-0 turnover ratio that was a pick 6 and terrible coaching killed the Tigers.
Arkansas out-gained Texas A&M 379 to 297 yet lost 21-17. A 3-0 turnover ratio roasted the Hogs.
UNLV only out-gained Fresno State 450 to 349 yet won 59 to 14. A nasty 4-0 turnover ratio and poor special teams destroyed the Bulldogs.
UCF’s yards were mainly garbage yards.
Minnesota out-gained Michigan 296 to 241 yet lost 27-24. Some garbage yards, but a 2-1 turnover ratio smashed the Gophers.
Baylor out-gained BYU 387 to 367 yet lost 34-28. Equal turnover at 2 but horrible third down efficiency 3/13 killed the Bears.
Northern Illinois out-gained NC State 283 to 171 yet lost 24-17. A bad 4-0 turnover ratio did in the Huskies.
Western Kentucky out-gained Boston College 355 to 279 yet lost 21-20. A bad 3-2 turnover ratio and a choke at the end killed the Hill toppers.
Washington out-gained Rutgers 521 to 299 yet lost 21-18. Equal turnovers but bad 3rd down efficiency killed the Huskies.
