*CFB(1u): Arizona/Cal UNDER 50.5–Sat 9/24; 4:30 PM CT
This opened up at 48 before being steamed up, so I’ll play against what I perceive to be a bad line move.
When you look up the word “mediocre” on Google, I’d be surprised if there wasn’t a picture of this Cal offense as the accompanying photo. It’s been that way for the entirety of the Justin Wilcox era, and if these first 3 games were any indication, it’ll be that way once again in 2022. Wilcox replaced the loss of mediocre QB Chase Garbers with another mediocre QB in Purdue transfer Jack Plummer(career 6.9 Y/A). The Golden Bears run game is far from explosive, and their OL has already allowed 12 sacks through just 3 games. Arizona’s secondary is clearly the strength of the defense, so don’t expect an explosive Cal passing game to pop up out of thin air in this one.
While Jayden de Laura is a major QB upgrade for Arizona, he has not looked all that impressive to start the season. After his breakout freshman year at Washington State, de Laura is completing just 60% of his passes this year at less than 7 Y/A. He has some young talent to work with on the outside, but this Cal defense will present a tough test. The Golden Bears rank in the Top 35 by my defensive efficiency metrics and do a good job of limiting explosive plays thanks to a pair of very dependable safeties.
I expect a lot of stalled drives, punts, and an all around ugly display of football.
If you’re considerably higher on Oklahoma after seeing them eviscerate Nebraska, history would prove your logic is faulty. After beating Nebraska in Dublin, Northwestern has responded with outright losses at home to Duke and Southern Illinois. After Georgia Southern’s win in Lincoln, they lost by double-digits at UAB the very next week. That trend speaks for itself.
Kansas State inexplicably lost at home to Tulane last week, which rightfully has sentiment on them low heading into this matchup. However, Kansas State will not blink in this spot. They won outright in Norman in 2020 as 28 point ‘dogs, and if not for a brilliant performance by Spencer Rattler, they would’ve beaten the Sooners last year. The Wildcats have a top 10 defense in the country that has yielded less than 10 PPG this year. They return both starting CB’s, have completely dominated opponents’ rushing attacks, but perhaps most importantly, they can get after the QB. I am not sold on Oklahoma’s OL after seeing them struggle to consistently protect Dillon Gabriel against inferior competition. I’m also not ready to say Oklahoma has all that good of a rushing attack just because they ran all over Nebraska; there are options, but don’t underestimate how tough of a test this Kansas State defense presents.
Kansas State RB Deuce Vaughn has racked up 319 yards over the last 2 seasons facing off against this Oklahoma defense, and he will undoubtedly be the centerpiece of the Wildcats’ game plan in the run and pass game. Collin Klein has not taken the training wheels off of QB Adrian Martinez yet, but I’m not willing to concede the possibility of Martinez becoming much more of a threat through the air. He showed major progression as a passer last year(9.4 Y/A) in addition to what he can do in the run game(nearly 2500 career yards on the ground). Oklahoma has exceeded my expectations in the pass rushing department, but I believe their back 7 can be had in this matchup.
I’m not playing this over the full game because, if Oklahoma is able to start pulling away, that forces Kansas State out of their gameplan offensively. However, I expect Chris Kleiman to come out with a great script offensively and for a borderline elite Kansas State defense to get stops early.
*CFB Teaser(1u): Baylor/Iowa State UNDER 52.5 + Arkansas +9 vs Texas A&M(-130)
“NeVeR tEaSe CoLlEgE fOoTbAlL”. I get that there’s more variance on average in CFB than in the NFL, but to imply that every matchup fits that criteria is absurd. I get snide comments from the same people every time I give out a teaser, so thought that was worth addressing.
Baylor/ISU is a low-variance game where I think pushing this total above multiple key numbers is the right call. Each team is led by their defense, and neither of these QB’s present much of a threat in the vertical passing game. Iowa State’s biggest loss from last year’s team is clearly RB Breece Hall; to say Jirehl Brock is a massive downgrade might be the understatement of the year. I wouldn’t expect Iowa State to get much of a push against a Baylor front 4 that returns its entire 2 deep from last year’s championship team. However, Baylor is still managing the loss of their top RB from a year ago and are not seeing the same burst out of that room. Baylor is also possibly without their TE Ben Sims who, with some relative unknowns at WR, is a much needed safety net for Blake Shapen. I could go on and on, but the last point I’ll make is that pace will be on our side here.
You could make a pretty good argument that Arkansas should be favored in this matchup. With that said, this is really a coin-flip type of game where a bounce here-and-there could be the difference. Arkansas’s secondary issues ultimately hold me off playing them at +2, but do I think A&M has the vertical passing game to consistently exploit that weakness? Hardly. Despite that disadvantage, Arkansas could make up for it with their lethal Front 7 which has produced some of the top rushing numbers in the nation here in 2022. A&M has looked spotty along their OL so far and failed to create many running lanes for Devon Achane. For as much as I like A&M’s DL and secondary, Miami proved last week that this team has holes stopping the run. That bodes horribly facing one of the most efficient rushing attacks in CFB. QB KJ Jefferson is a true dual-threat that takes care of the football(3 INT’s in ‘21) and is far more efficient a passer than people think. Out of all possible results in this matchup, an A&M double-digit win is clearly the least likely.
*CFB(0.53u): Oregon State ML(+190) vs USC–Sat 9/24; 8:30 PM CT
I don’t see much value in betting the spread here; USC is either going to cover with ease or have every chance of getting upset. Personally, I see a clear enough path for Oregon State to win this game that I will sprinkle on the ML.
USC’s defense might still be flat out terrible; I have that side of the ball power-rated as 91st in the country. Oregon State has an incredibly efficient system on offense that is predicated on running the football. Deshaun Fenwick(5.4 YPC) seems to have picked up right where BJ Baylor left off last year. USC underperformed against the run in their matchup with Stanford a few weeks ago; the Cardinal put up 460 yards overall, and if not for some inopportune turnovers, they would’ve been live dogs in that matchup. Oregon State QB Chance Nolan has proven to be a threat in the play-action game once the run game is established, throwing for 8.4 Y/A last year and 9.9 Y/A this year against some good competition. USC’s secondary was a pretty big concern for me coming into the year, and in general, I have little faith in this defense.
There’s not much to dislike about this USC offense, and on paper, this would appear to be a pretty favorable matchup. I’ll say this: Games don’t get played on paper. USC’s offense is built almost solely from the transfer portal, meaning this unit has little-to-no continuity. We saw them pass their first road test against Stanford, but playing in Corvallis at night presents their first real road test of the season. I am of the belief that the teams who focus on building from within will have the best chance at success in this new Transfer Portal era. I think the chances for head-scratching performances is greater for a team of ringers like USC, and this is exactly the scenario where that would get exploited.
I also lean pretty heavily towards the Over, though concerns with pace and Oregon State’s ball-control style are keeping me off for now.
*Rutgers TT UNDER vs Iowa(TT’s not yet published)
I’ll be on this officially when TT’s get released, hopefully at 13 or 13.5. Rutgers’ offense vs Iowa’s defense is perhaps the biggest mismatch of any matchup we’ll see on Saturday. Say what you want about Iowa’s offense, but their defense has allowed just 1 TD this year and can dominate a game at all 3 levels; they rank only behind Georgia in my power ratings. QB health is a concern for the Scarlet Knights, they simply won’t beat Iowa up front, and they have struggled mightily to establish any sort of run game.
The President’s Cup takes place this week at Quail Hollow Club, a course that’s been a PGA Tour staple for the past few years. Historically, the United States has dominated this event with a record of 11-1-1.
There are a bunch of major storylines this week but the main one, besides the ongoing saga between the PGA Tour and LIV Tour, is the number of players making their President’s Cup debuts. Between both teams, 14 players will be playing in their first President’s Cup which sets a record. The International team has eight players with the United States side having six.
Given all of the newcomers, these teams, both the International team and the United States, have the youngest teams in history. The International team has an average age of 28.8 with the United States having an average age of 29.6. Tom Kim, at 20 years old, is the third youngest player to make his President’s Cup debut.
Both teams’ rosters look slightly different than the predicted lineups a month or two ago. Will Zalatoris is unable to participate for the United States due to a back injury that forced him to withdraw from the BMW Championship. Cameron Smith and Joaquin Niemann are also unable after joining the LIV Tour.
Several players have also had some success at Quail Hollow before. Max Homa won the Wells Fargo Championship in 2019 and Justin Thomas won the PGA Championship here in 2017.
The President’s Cup is a series of matches between the United States and an International Team minus Europe. Europe competes against the United States in a similar contest called the Ryder Cup.
Since its inauguration in 1994, this event has been held biannually rotating with the Ryder Cup. Because of the global pandemic, the 2020 Ryder Cup was postponed until 2021. That pushed the Presidents Cup back to even years.
Course Guide/ Scorecard:
Quail Hollow has played host to the Wells Fargo Championship every year since 2003 with a few exceptions. In 2017, the PGA Championship was held at Quail Hollow so the Wells Fargo was moved to Eagle Point Golf Club in Wilmington, NC. Last year, the Wells Fargo was held at TPC Potomac in preparation for the President’s Cup.
The President’s Cup will have a different layout this week than previous events. The routing was changed to get the Green Mile (holes No. 16-18) in play for most matches. Routing is 1-8, 12-18, 10-11, and 9.

The Odds:
The United States are heavy favorites this week. On most major books, they’re around -1200 to lift the trophy. It may seem like absurd odds but if we look at the OWGR, the US has an average of 11.6 compared to the Internationals of 48.9.
The U.S. leads, 11-1-1. The lone International victory came in 1998 in Australia. The two teams tied in 2003 in South Africa. Since its inauguration, the United States has never lost on home soil.

Picks (Top American Rookie):
Scottie Scheffler (+240) – Bet365
Risk 0.50 to win 1.20 Units
This will be Scottie Scheffler’s first President’s Cup. However, we did see him last year at the Ryder Cup. He played three matches and finished with a record of 2-0-1. On the PGA Tour this year, he won the WGC Dell-Technologies Match Play event defeating fellow teammate Kevin Kisner. While this is his first President’s Cup, he’s shown he can succeed in this format. Scheffler has never played at Quail Hollow before this course suits his game very well.
Max Homa (+400) – Bet365
Risk 0.25 to win 1.00 Unit
Max Homa, is coming off a victory at the Fortinet Championship where he was able to successfully defend his title in an improbable fashion. He’s also had success at Quail Hollow winning the Wells Fargo Championship back in 2019. This will be his first President’s Cup with the only other recent experience in match play coming at the WGC Dell-Technologies Match Play. He didn’t make it out of the group stage finishing with a record of 1-2-0. Based off his recent form and course history, he seems primed t have a great week.
Just Missed: Cameron Young (+700)
Picks (Top International Rookie):
Corey Conners (+333) – Bet365
Risk 0.50 to win 1.67 Units
Corey Conners is coming off a missed cut at the Fortinet Championship last week. However, before that, he finished 26th at the TOUR Championship, T5 at the BMW Championship, and T28 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. He’ll be making his President’s Cup debut this week but he’s had success in recent match-play events. At the WGC Dell-Technologies Match Play event, Conners’ made it to the Semifinals before losing to Kevin Kisner. In his last two appearances at Quail Hollow, he finished T42 and T43. His Driving Distance isn’t the best but given his approach play and short game, he should be able to compete.
Cameron Davis (+650) – Bet365
Risk 0.25 to win 1.63 Units
Unlike, Corey Conners, Cam Davis has the distance off the tee to do very well here. The yardage increase from the 2021 Wells Fargo Championship, where he finished T26, should only benefit him. This will be his first President’s Cup and first professional match-play event. In his last start on Tour, he missed the cut at the Fortinet Championship posting back-to-back rounds in the 70s. However, before that, he finished T35 at the BMW Championship and T13 at the FedEx St Jude Championship. For Davis, there are a lot of unknowns but given his style of play and course history, he should play well.
Just Missed: Taylor Pendrith (+600)
Picks (Top Scorer):
Justin Thomas (+1000) – Bet365
Risk 0.50 to win 5.00 Units
Justin Thomas, a veteran of the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup, looks poised to succeed at Quail Hollow, a course he’s won at before. He’s played in two Presidents Cups before (’17,’19) finishing with an overall record of 6-2-2. In terms of recent form, JT has been playing some great golf as of late finishing T13/T52/T5 in his last three starts on Tour. He’s been here before and knows what’s expected when the lights turn on. His style of play has shown that it fits the course so I expect him to play well this week.
Picks (Correct Score):
United States 17.5 – 12.5 (+1100) – BetMGM/ FanDuel
United States 17.0 – 13.0 (+1200) – BetMGM/ FanDuel
Best of luck, and as always you can find me on Twitter @GatorBetting and Instagram @Gator_Sports_Betting. Any feedback whether positive or negative is always encouraged.
I’ve been mediocre out of the gates in CFB(13-15, -2.14u), but if history is correct(55%, +27.35u in CFB last year), we’ll be just alright.
I want to give you 4 plays out of the gate for Week 4 but will follow up this evening with some additional 1u plays. To receive a text when I release/add any plays, join my Telegram group!
*CFB(1.5u): Clemson -7 @ Wake Forest–Sat 9/24; 11 AM CT
Fun Fact: Over the last 5 seasons, Clemson has beaten Wake Forest by an average of 34 PPG. I won’t hold my breath expecting this one to play out any differently.
I have been the first guy to admit that Clemson needs to make a change at QB away from DJ Uiagalelei, and I still believe that move will be made this season. However, this is not a matchup where I expect that to be necessary. Clemson is going to be able to establish their run game behind RB Will Shipley(career 5.7 YPC) against this porous Wake Forest run defense that has been a liability for years. Vanderbilt and Liberty had no trouble doing so; in fact, Liberty out-gained Wake Forest by almost 100 yards last week and should’ve walked out of Winston-Salem with a win. From there, I think the opportunities for Uiagalelei will open up similar to how it did last year when Clemson eviscerated Wake Forest for 48 points.
Wake Forest has an incredibly unbalanced and predictable offense given they have shown no ability to establish any sort of run game; against Liberty, their RB’s combined for just 12 yards on 14 carries. How do you think that translates against a Top 5 defense in America with one of the best front 4’s in College Football? QB Sam Hartman is a pretty experienced player at this point, but he is far less efficient than people think(58%, 8 Y/A over his career). Clemson might be content with playing a “bend don’t break” style in their secondary, but ultimately, Hartman cannot carry this offense single-handedly over a 60 minute game. He threw 14 INT’s a year ago, and I’d bet you we see multiple in this one. Clemson is likely to welcome back Bryan Breese and/or Xavier Thomas this week, making a great front 4 even more of a strength against this vulnerable Wake Forest OL.
*CFB(1.5u): TCU/SMU OVER 70.5–Sat 9/24; 11 AM CT
Both of these squads have major holes defensively that I believe haven’t been fully exploited yet. TCU has been fortunate to draw Colorado and Tarleton State, but they rank 80th by my defensive efficiency metrics coming into this matchup. I expect their Front 4 to get swallowed up by a strong SMU OL and think that, outside of their first-team All Big12 CB, they are very attackable in their Back 7. SMU QB Tanner Mordecai is an incredibly experienced player that is fit to run Garrett Riley’s fast-paced system. The passing game gets a lot of love(rightfully so), but SMU has multiple RB’s that are 5+ YPC caliber.
It is uncertain whether TCU QB Chandler Morris will be healthy enough to go, but Max Duggan might be the better option regardless given his ability as a dual-threat. Duggan threw for 9 Y/A last year and is in his 4th year as a starter; either option is perfectly adequate to put up points in this matchup. The Frogs have tons of deep play potential on the outside led by WR Quentin Johnson and have allowed just 1 sack this season. SMU was shredded against the run vs Maryland last week and rank just 68th by my defensive efficiency metrics. TCU RB Kendre Miller has run for 7.2 YPC over the course of his career, meaning TCU can create explosive plays in a variety of ways.
In summary, there is lots of experience at key positions offensively(QB, OL) and 2 offensive-first coaching staffs. This should be a high-possession game that, when combined with the expected efficiency, should lead to a classic shootout.
*CFB(1.5u): Minnesota/Michigan State OVER 51–Sat 9/24; 2:30 PM CT
Minnesota bringing back OC Kirk Ciarrocca completely changes the dynamics of this offense. Under him, the Gophers were a Top 10 offense in America back in 2019, and I think this 2022 version could display an even greater deal of efficiency. QB Tanner Morgan is now a 5th year starter that had a career year in this system back in 2019(10.3 Y/A, 28 TD vs 6 INT). This year, his Y/A has climbed all the way up to 11.7. Michigan State had one of the worst pass defenses in America a year ago, and the fact they just got shredded for 391 yards by Michael Penix last week inspires no confidence that Mel Tucker has fixed those issues. However, I believe Minnesota’s RB corps is really what takes them to the next level. Mohamed Ibrahim(career 5.5 YPC) is back healthy and has already run for 464 yards this year; he is joined by a slew of other quality backs that form what could be the deepest RB room in all of CFB. I believe this offense can impose their will in the run game on virtually anybody.
Michigan State failed to establish any sort of run game against Washington last week, but I thought QB Payton Thorne responded to that disadvantage quite well. The Spartans are expected to welcome back their Top WR Jayden Reed this week, but even if he doesn’t play, I like Sparty’s chances of moving the ball in this one. By nature of playing 3 nobodies, we have yet to see Minnesota’s defense get tested this year. I liked their D last year, but they lost a lot of production at some key spots(specifically at DL and secondary). Michigan State has starting experience across the board along their OL and think they can beat Minnesota up front. While the RB’s struggled last week, both Broussard and Berger are above 5 YPC throughout their career. Thorne is an 8.5 Y/A guy that I believe is fully capable of taking advantage of a Minnesota defense that is still being priced according to what they were last season.
Ultimately, Minnesota’s massive increase in pace is enough to make this a multi-unit play.
Many would lead you to believe that this is an offensive mismatch, but the far bigger mismatch falls on the defensive side of the ball. Notre Dame has a borderline Top 10 defensive in America that held Ohio State to just 21 points, while North Carolina ranks 112th by my defensive efficiency metrics coming into this spot.
North Carolina’s biggest weakness offensively(BY FAR) is in pass protection. It is why they went 6-7 last year even with a QB as dynamic as Sam Howell, and it has remained a problem here in 2022. Coincidentally, Notre Dame’s strength defensively is in their pass rush, making this a total and utter mismatch up front. UNC QB Drake Maye has looked the part through 3 games, but it’s also worth noting that he’s drawn an incredible amount of praise for lighting up G5 teams like App State and Georgia State. This is by far the best secondary he’s gone up against and just an overall major step up in competition. I can’t emphasize enough how poor I expect UNC’s offensive line to be in this matchup.
I’m not here to defend Notre Dame’s offense(I’ve been critical of it since July), but this is easily their most manageable matchup of the season. They’ve had to go up against Top 35 defenses in Ohio State and Cal; shoot, even Marshall has an above average defense. North Carolina allowed 61 points to App State and were lucky to escape Atlanta with only 28 points allowed against Georgia State. The Irish are solid along their OL and will match up with a Tar Heel DL that has struggled to create any sort of pass rush in 2022. Teams have also had their way establishing the run on UNC, and their young secondary has shown to be very vulnerable early in the season.
I had the same reaction to this line upon first glance that I’m betting many of you did. However, upon handicapping this game, I would go as far as to say the wrong team is favored. 1 more point: You could argue that Mack Brown is the far better coach than Marcus Freeman, and historically you’d obviously be correct. But, are we sure that 2022 Mack Brown should be thought of in the same light as 2005 Mack Brown? Either way, I like Notre Dame to win this game outright but will take any points the oddsmakers give me.
A year off seems to be a good thing for Coastal Carolina as they come into this contest 3-0. Meanwhile Georgia State is 0-3 and yet this is still a short number. Why? Because the books know that Georgia State can and probably will win this game. An intra-conference matchup at home, this is a good spot for the Panthers to get a win and they’ve been very competitive against much better teams so far, so don’t be deterred by their record.
Michigan -16.5 (-115), to win 1.5 units
We’ve seen this story over and over again and while MD looks pretty good this year, they almost always do before they take on a big dog. And historically they SUCK when they take on an elite team like Michigan. The Wolverines’ offense is exciting this year and while their defense may not be as proficient, I think they’ll look like the old Michigan defense on Saturday.
Georgia -45 (-110), to win 1.5 units
It’s an insane line but this is an insanely good Georgia team who does NOT want to lose their #1 ranking. How is Kent State going to score? Miracles happen, but I’ll count on the Bulldogs crushing their low-level opponent at home.
Temple -9 (-110), to win 0.5 units
Ugly ugly I know, but Temple has a better defense than people think and they’re facing one of the worst teams in college football. Nice spot at home. Low unit play for obvious reasons– it’s Temple.
North Carolina -1.5 (-110), to win 1 unit
Time to fade Notre Dame. As a fan it’s been brutal seeing this team underwhelm year after year but this season may be the most underwhelming of all. Their defense is bend don’t break but the only problem is that they break pretty fucking often. I don’t think they can keep up with the Tar Heels offense if they get going. And at home, the probabilities suggest that their offense will get going.
Florida +10.5 (-104), to win 2 units
This is just a numbers play. The Volunteers have looked good and I realize Florida has tripped over themselves already, they’re just not as sharp yet and it showed against Kentucky and South Florida, but this is a game they get UP for (they’ve won 16 of the last 17) and it hasn’t mattered how much “better” the Volunteers have been in the past, either. Brad Powers’ numbers, which go back to 1976, Tennessee has NEVER been favored by more than a touchdown against the Gators. Take advantage.
USC -6 (-110), to win 1.5 units
This hasn’t disappointed yet and we’ll keep playing on the Trojans as long as we see value. The Beavers are fiesty for sure but I don’t see them hanging.
UFC 280 on Oct 22nd, (12-12, +11.88 units in 2022):
Islam Makhachev (-150), to win 2.5 units
Under 2.5 rounds (+125), to win 1.25 units
Watch this video and just TRY not to get excited about this main event. One of the biggest cards in years and one of the best fights I can remember, two perceived prodigies face off on October 22nd, one day before my birthday, and needless to say I’m fucking pumped. Charles Oliveira deserves everything he’s gotten, but this is Islam’s time to shine. Islam may be legitimately unbeatable. I realize that Oliveira can take punishment like no one’s business and he just continues to prove doubters wrong, maybe he does it again here, but I’m willing to bet a lot that he does not. Islam is Khabib 2.0 and Khabib is literally the best UFC fighter of all time so, that’s a rather scary prospect. He defends himself perfectly, he has an immeasurable gas tank, he has that weird, rare power that comes from seemingly nowhere and he WILL take down Oliveira. I’m also betting he wins by points or wins later in the fight after he wears down Oliveira.
TJ Dillashaw (+140), to win 2.8 units
Sorry not sorry, I like Aljamain Sterling isn’t as sharp as he thinks he is, though defeating Peter Yan was one hell of a win. Although, according to most experts and definitely in my opinion, Yan should have won that fight. Now Sterling waltzes into this contest probably thinking he’s the man. I love TJ to show him emphatically that he is NOT. Dillashaw has one of the best gas tanks in the UFC and while his suspension took him out of the game for a while, he got warmed up again with a nice split decision win against the elite Cory Sandhagen. Many forget how dominant and overwhelming TJ was in his prime – I do not. Dude is still only 36 years old and he’s probably healthier than he’s been in a long time. Dillashaw for the win.

The South Florida Bulls head to Kentucky to take on the Louisville Cardinals on Saturday afternoon. As a 24.5 point dog, the Bulls are coming off a hard fought game last week against their instate rival, Florida Gators, losing 31-28. Louisville is also coming off a tough loss to Florida St after they fell 35-31. Through 3 games, the Cardinals are averaging just 19.3 points per game but that was against opponents that have collectively given up 17.2 points per game on average. They will gracefully welcome the Bulls defense who has given up 33.7 points per game, through 3 games as well. USF runs the ball 53.8% of their plays and are gaining 5.98 yards per rush (11th best in the nation) and they will be going up against Louisville’s 126th ranked defensive rushing plays success rate. The Bulls will thrive on the ground in this one. On the other side, the Cardinals will fare better on offense in this one as well since they will be going up against the 96th ranked USF defensive success rate. Additionally, both defenses rank in the bottom 3rd of the nation according to PFF. Louisville compiled 495 yards while scoring 31 points against the #9 defense (Florida St) against defending explosive plays. There will be more opportunity this week and I expect the Cardinals to make more plays down field against the 76th ranked team on giving up plays of 30 yards or more.
