College Football Week 2 Misleading Final Scores

  • Northwestern out-gained Duke 511 to 473 and lost 31-23.   A 3-1 turnover ratio killed them.
  • Wisconsin out-gained Washington State 401 to 253.   Horrible 3rd down efficiency at 2/11 done them in.  Also, 11 penalties and both teams had 3 turnovers.
  • Texas Tech out-gained Houston 472 to 352 yet only won by 3 in overtime.   A 3-2 turnover ratio didn’t help them much.
  • West Virginia out-gained Kansas 505 to 419 yet lost 55-42.  A 2-0 turnover ratio killed them.
  • Fresno State out-gained Oregon State 492 to 397 yet lost 35-32. No turnovers but bad red zone efficiency and special teams play hurt them.

The South Florida Bulls travel to the Swamp to face off with instate rivals, Florida Gators. South Florida already had a big test in their opener against a really good BYU squad. Last week they played FCS Howard where they were able to work on some concerns and prep for this week against Florida. Florida is coming off a tough loss to Kentucky but they also may be looking forward to their showdown with Tennessee next week. USF will try to run off the left side where all 3 linemen are projected to get drafted in next years NFL draft. However, it will depend on how quickly they get behind if they will be able to establish a running game. If not, it will be in the hands of Baylor’s starting QB from a season ago, Gerry Bohanon, who threw for 2200 yards and 18 touchdowns while running for 323 yards on the ground while leading the Bears to a 12-2 record last year. Florida won 42-20 last season after leading 35-3 at halftime. After half, the Gators scored 7 more points. Although Florida has a new head coach, Billy Napier, I expect a similar game this season with USF getting the backdoor cover again. The Bulls should be better prepared and improved after last season’s game and the game with BYU which is reflected by the spread being 4 points less than last season. Last years line was 28.5. This is more of a rivalry game for USF than Florida. We were able to get above the key number of 24 and 24.5 are still out there. I look for the Bulls to come out improved and keep this one within 24 points. Take USF +24.5

September 14th MLB Plays

I’m on a 6-1 run in MLB and see my season record at 154-141-6, +6.67u. I’m rolling with a 4 play card tonight. To receive a text when I release/add any plays, join my Telegram group!

*MLB(1u): Orioles F5 TT OVER 2.5(+100) @ Nationals–6:05 PM CT

Why we continue to be offered reasonable prices to fade Nationals SP Patrick Corbin is beyond me. Corbin has been arguably the worst SP in baseball for 3 years running, is allowing 12.5 hits/9 innings this year, and holds a disgusting 1.71 WHIP. The Orioles are far from world beaters offensively, but a 104 wRC+ vs lefties on the road since July 1st proves them to be plenty competent enough to take advantage of this favorable matchup.

*MLB(1u): Twins -1.5(+110) vs Royals–6:40 PM CT

Twins SP Sonny Gray has been quite solid for the Twins this season(3.09 ERA, 1.14 WHIP) and is in good current form having allowed just 7 ER across his last 5 starts. The Royals hold a measly 89 wRC+ vs righties on the road since July 1st and were nearly no-hit last night. Minnesota had a bad start to September but showed life in last night’s blowout win. They’ll get a favorable matchup today facing off against a run-down arm in Zack Greinke. Greinke holds some of the worst road numbers in baseball(6.33 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, 2.2 HR/9) and is missing bats at the lowest rate in his career while simultaneously allowing nearly 30% of balls to be hit 95+ mph.

The Royals have far and away the worst bullpen in baseball, giving the Twins a sizable advantage in the later innings. If the market realized how bad Greinke has been in this role, we would not be getting this at plus-money.

*MLB(1u): Brewers/Cardinals F5 UNDER 3.5(-115)–6:45 PM CT

This is a Grade-A pitching matchup between two aces in Corbin Burnes and Adam Wainwright. Burnes has had the Cardinals number in a major way this year, allowing just 1 ER across 21 innings against the Red Birds. Burnes is a sub-1.00 WHIP guy who, when at his best, I would put up against any SP in the league. Adam Wainwright is an easy back at home, recording a sub-3.00 ERA at Busch Stadium each of the past 2 seasons(and many more times throughout his career). While he’s coming off a few uncharacteristically poor starts, he’s treated us well in this role all season. The Brewers have started to swing the bats better here in September but are still a lineup I have zero faith in when stepping up in competition.

*MLB(1u): Rangers F5 -0.5(-110) vs Athletics–7:05 PM CT

It was a matter of time before Athletics SP JP Sears saw some regression, and boy did he in his last start(6 ER, 3 HR’s allowed in just 2 innings). It turns out you can’t strike out less than 6 batters/9 and allow over 30% of balls to be hit 95+ mph and have sustainable success. Now, Sears has to turn around and face a Rangers lineup that holds a league-best 171 wRC+ vs lefties at home since July 1st… sign me up. Rangers SP Dane Dunning is a heavy-ground ball guy who’s been steady at Globe Life Field; I can trust him to make pretty quick work of this A’s lineup.

Premiums, CFB Week 3

CFB is off to a rocky start but we’re transparent about it — I never called myself an expert in CFB and I spend WAY more time handicapping the NFL. If you go elsewhere for your picks, honestly I wouldn’t blame you. You’re paying for my NFL and NBA, which is smart, but there are excellent cappers like Kyle Hunter, Nick Hub, and Kiev O’Neill that can help you win bets, too. Plus there are free picks at the OB on the regular.
Still, because I do cap it, I’ll share my CFB every week. We’ll reduce unit size and express more caution when taking these. Express NO caution with NFL and NBA. 😉 Onto the picks:
CFB Week 3 Picks (11-11-2, -1.70 units):
Florida State -3 (-107), to win 1 unit
Rivalry game, sure, but Florida State was impressive out the gate and I don’t think this flailing version of Louisville can do much against the Seminole defense.
Connecticut/Michigan under 60 (-110), to win 0.5 units
Classic game where the Wolverines pulverize a shitty team and their defense eats up stats for the entire second half. Harbaugh has been conservative many times in these cases before.
Nebraska +11 (-110), to win 1 unit
Steve thinks Nebraska is a live dog here and I don’t disagree. After finally firing Scott Frost, teams usually get up with a different fire. Oklahoma has faced shit teams thus far and we really don’t know how capable they are, while their defense is likely (Big-12!) to be typically soft. Like the Huskers here.
UCLA -15.5 (-110), to win 1 unit
Nice redemption spot for UCLA after they were humbled by USC. They’re still in a different class than South Alabama. Blowout potential at home.
Auburn +3 (-115), to win 1.5 units
Don’t believe in PSU, DO believe in Auburn’s defense. At home, SEC, they should keep this close and I have them winning. I get it’s their first test but PSU coming off a big Purdue win and overconfident — hate that for that Nittany Lions. Gotta take a +3.
SMU/Maryland over 74 (-113), to win 1 unit
Didn’t get the best number here but when it goes this high, it’s for a reason. No defense and all offense and pace — this should be a game where both teams get near 40.
UTSA +12.5 (-112), to win 0.8 units
UTSA is formidable enough to stay in this contest, especially if Texas reacts like Notre Dame reacted after their big showdown loss. Sleepy spot for Texas and UTSA will GET UP for this — taking the dog.
USC -12.5 (-105), to win 1 unit
Like I said, I think the Trojans are the real deal and a program that will only get sharper as the season goes on. At home and clearly coached up well, this is another game with blowout potential.

Week 3 CFB Plays(Part 1/2)

2021 CFB: 106-88-1, +27.35u

2022 CFB: 9-11, -0.99u

*CFB(1.5u): Penn State/Auburn UNDER 47.5(-110)–Sat 9/17; 2:30 PM CT

Auburn presents virtually no threat in the vertical passing game, as last week’s 24 point performance against San Jose State showed. QB TJ Finley might have a “big arm”, but Brian Harsin has no trust in his QB to make plays down the field given Finley’s career inconsistency(57% completion, 6.9 Y/A, 11 TD vs 9 INT) and the overall weakness that is the Auburn WR unit. As such, Harsin figures to put the games on the legs of his bellcow RB Tank Bigsby. The perception of Bigsby is that he is one of the best backs in the SEC, but the production doesn’t follow(likely due to the lack of a passing game). We saw Bigsby get bottled up for just 51 yards on 13 carries last week, and I think Penn State’s Front 7 will be up to the test. Penn State’s best asset defensively is their secondary; that was my read coming into the year, and it was confirmed in their performance vs a very pass-heavy attack in Purdue. I think Brian Harsin will be content keeping things vanilla, avoiding disaster through the air, and putting this game in the hands of his defense.

I am not a Sean Clifford guy; he is the epitome of “experience” not always equating to production. Clifford has thrown for less than 8 Y/A in each of the past 3 seasons, and he lost his clear #1 WR from a year ago in Jahan Dotson. If you’ll remember, Dotson’s performance was a big reason for Penn State’s success against Auburn last year. However, Sean Clifford is an adequate enough QB to produce when he has pieces around him. Unfortunately for him, I think Penn State is going to have a tough time establishing the run. Much of the experience in the RB room is not game-changing talent, and while freshman Nick Singleton had a breakout game vs Ohio last week, I think the major step up in opponent makes a repeat performance unlikely. Penn State’s OL was a major liability for the Nittany Lions a year ago; if their 3 YPC average vs Purdue was any indicator, they still have a long way to go. Auburn has a physical front 7 that I believe will both stop the run and pressure Clifford. Their secondary lost some key pieces from a year ago, but so did Penn State’s WR corps.

I expect this game to come down to the wire, and the most likely way I see that happening is via an ugly, low-scoring affair. It can’t be stated enough that the environment at Jordan-Hare stadium will likely be the toughest most of these Penn State players have ever played in. Under is the play.

*CFB(1.5u): Michigan State +3.5(-110) @ Washington–Sat 9/17; 6:30 PM CT

I circled this game preseason knowing Washington would be overvalued after a few easy wins vs clearly inferior competition. Washington was arguably the most disappointing team in the country a year ago, which is why Kalen Debour was brought in to take things over. Debour is much less of a “sure thing” as a HC than many would be willing to admit. While he does have familiarity with QB Michael Penix from their time together at Indiana, the simple reality is that Penix is not a very good QB(60% completion, 7.6 Y/A throughout his career). Washington’s run game might’ve improved slightly from a year ago, but I don’t think they carry over their early success into this matchup. The Huskies’ OL was perhaps the biggest disappointment by a single unit in the country a year ago; the level of production has not even eclipsed what the expectations are.

A lot of people think Michigan State was a “one-hit wonder” after last year’s New Years 6 run, but I’m not so sure. I like QB Payton Thorne(8.5 Y/A each of the past two seasons), and he has a game-changing receiver on the outside in the form of Jayden Reed. Losing RB Kenneth Walker was a hit, but I like the acquisitions Mel Tucker made in the transfer portal this offseason; both Jalen Berger and Jarek Broussard were above 5 YPC at the P5 level coming into this season. The Spartans are also stout up front on both sides of the ball. They are experienced along their OL and were a productive unit a year ago, and their defense has managed 12 sacks already through just 2 games. The clear weakness for Michigan State a year ago was their pass defense, but I think the market is grossly overestimating Penix’s ability to take advantage of that (supposed) weakness. I have concerns about this Washington defense, specifically in their secondary. They have also failed to create much pressure on the QB even against inferior opponents and have a totally reshuffled interior DL.

I expect Michigan State to have every chance to win this game in the 4Q. If you’re going to give me 3-and-a-hook, I’ll make this a multiunit play.

*CFB(1u): Oklahoma/Nebraska UNDER 67.5(-110)–Sat 9/17; 11 AM CT

Saturday figures to be a windy one in Lincoln, with steady 17-20 mph gusts expected throughout this game. While that’s not the only part of this handicap, a wind this strong will certainly thwart each QB’s chances to consistently deliver in the vertical passing game.

Oklahoma’s offense figures to be strong once again after adding former UCF QB Dillon Gabriel from the transfer portal. Gabriel is right at 9 Y/A throughout his career and is familiar with OC Jeff Lebby’s system. However, I have my doubts about Oklahoma’s ground game. Eric Gray is much more of a change-of-pace, pass-catching back than he is a bellcow; this will be his first real test in this new role. Additionally, the Sooners are very mediocre along their OL, allowing 5 sacks through 2 weeks and having been a liability at times over the past few years.

Obviously, Nebraska’s defense hasn’t done much right this year(as last week’s loss to Georgia Southern showed). It’s strange because this was a top 15 defense in America a year ago, and they brought back a lot of key pieces. Time will tell how the Huskers will respond to the firing of Scott Frost, but I’m expecting a MAJOR step-up performance from the Huskers defense. We saw it from TCU and Washington State last year in the first game following the dismissal of their HC(s), and I think we’ll see it here. Nebraska must be better against the run, but I still believe the strength of their defense is at the second level with their LB’s.

With the hire of Brent Venables, Oklahoma is shifting its identity from that of an offensive-first team to a defensive-first team. We’ve seen them be able to create pressure early this season, and I think that translates against a Nebraska OL that is still not solidified. Nebraska QB Casey Thompson’s main weakness is his arm strength, meaning I think these conditions will especially impact him on any throws down the field. Nebraska has run the ball to varying degrees of success this year, but I still don’t view that unit as particularly explosive.

Like I said, I think we’ll get an admirable effort from Nebraska, and the path from them to keep this game close is via a step-up performance from their defense. The fact that each of these OC’s like to run with tempo is going to keep this a 1u play, but a lot still has to go right for a game to eclipse this high of a total. Winds this heavy will have enough of an impact to where I feel comfortable playing this one Under the total.

*CFB(1u): NC State -10(-110) vs Texas Tech–Sat 9/17; 6 PM CT

Texas Tech managed an OT victory against a flawed Houston team a week ago, but now this first year coaching staff will face their first road test against a team with little-to-no flaws. North Carolina State has the potential to finish with a top 5 defense in the country this year; they can get after the QB and are solid in their secondary, but their clear strength is at that LB core. Texas Tech OC Zack Kittley is notorious for his aggressive, pass-first offense and had a lot of success with HIS GUYS at Western Kentucky last year, but I don’t believe he has a QB fit to run this offense on campus. Week 1 starter Tyler Shough is still on the shelf, and Donovan Smith(6.1 Y/A, 3 INT’s last week) is much more fit for a balanced system. In addition, Texas Tech’s OL allowed 5 sacks a week ago and figure to be at a disadvantage in the trenches once again.

Devin Leary is the best QB in the ACC by my estimation, bringing in a 7:1 TD/INT ratio from a season ago. Leary has a slew of difference-making WR’s on the outside and plays behind an OL that has yet to allow a sack here in 2022. I had my doubts about the Wolfpack run game coming into the year, but they have over delivered as far as I am concerned. Texas Tech HC Joey Maguire inherits a defense that had some low lows a year ago, and I’m not sold that they’ve improved all that much. Houston is an incredibly unbalanced offense, and the disparity between Clayton Tune and Devin Leary is far wider than many would be willing to admit. Particularly, Tech’s back 7 figures to be extremely attackable for this NC State passing game.

I think Texas Tech is clearly overvalued after last week’s win. I am astronomically high on NC State and played on them to win the ACC this year. This line should be closer to 2 TD’s.

The Fortinet Championship – Preview & Picks

The PGA couldn’t have asked for a better finish with Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy dueling it out on Sunday for the TOUR Championship. Rory ultimately prevailed and became the first player in Tour history to lift the FedExCup for the third time.

We now head to wine country for the Fortinet Championship at the Silverado Resort and Spa. This event will kick off the start of the new season but will be the last time it does so. The Tour will return to a “calendar year” schedule starting next season. This is the first full-field event we’ve seen since the Wyndham Championship which includes defending champion, Max Homa.

Course/ Tournament History:

The Fortinet Championship, previously known as the Safeway Open, is the opening event of the PGA Tour season. Fortinet took over the naming rights in 2021, signing a six-year deal.

This tournament wasn’t always the first event on the PGA Tour schedule. The change happened in 2013 when the PGA changed its “year” to October rather than January. However, this is the last year that the PGA Tour will use the wraparound season as they will return to the calendar schedule in 2024.

The Silverado Resort and Spa has hosted this event since 2014. The original 18-hole course at Silverado opened in 1955 but just 11 years later was re-designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. In addition to the re-design of the North Course, he added a South Course. In 2010, Johnny Miller purchased the resort and made several improvements. He also added 250 yards to the North Course making it up to current PGA standards.

72-Hole Record (Silverado): 267, Stewart Cink (2020)

18-Hole Record (Silverado): 61, Chesson Hadley (2nd round, 2017).

Course Guide/ Scorecard:

The North Course at Silverado Resort was originally designed by Ben Harmon and underwent renovations by both RTJ and Johnny Miller. It’s a Par 72 that’s listed at just over 7,100 yards. It features four Par 3’s, ten Par 4’s, and four Par 5’s.

Silverado’s North Couse is a classic tree-lined, parkland layout with significant elevation changes on several holes. The fairways are some of the narrowest on Tour but if players do find the rough, it’s not an issue as it’s not very penal. The average green size is around the Tour average so players will have some room to miss.

The four Par 3’s range between 182 yards and 212 yards. In terms of stats, all four Par 3’s had a scoring average over par last year.

No. 11 is a short par 3 playing 182 yards that ranges in difficulty depending on the pin location. The green itself is guarded by water on the front right along with two bunkers. Any tee shot that fails to find the green will make it very difficult for the player to save Par.

The majority of the ten Par 4’s range between 400-450 yards. No. 8 is the shortest listed at 360 with the longest being No. 13, playing 458 yards. Only two of the ten Par 4’s had scoring averages over Par last year, No. 12 and No. 13.

No. 12 is a dogleg right that gives the players an option off the tee. Most will opt to take an iron prioritizing accuracy over distance. However, some will take an aggressive approach opting to cut the corner. Those who can succeed will be rewarded with an approach shot under 100 yards.

The four Par 5’s are No. 5, 9, 16, and 18. In terms of distance No. 18 is the longest listed at 575 yards. As expected, all of the Par 5’s had scoring averages below par last year.

No. 18 is a long par 5 that players can reach in two deepening on the location of their tee shot. If players can avoid the fairway bunkers they’ll have a relatively easy approach shot in. The greens are fairly flat and only guarded by two ghost bunkers in the front.

The Field/ Odds:

We’ll have a full field of 156 players this week for the Fortinet Championship. Most of the top players are not competing this week but we still have five of the OWGR top 50 amongst the field. We also have a few Korn Ferry Tour grads making their debuts as full-fledged PGA TOUR members including Justin Suh, Erik Barnes, and Kyle Westmoreland.

Max Homa (+1600), last year’s winner, is the odds-on favorite to win the season opener. The last time we saw him was at the TOUR Championship where he finished T5. He’s competed in this event six times before with the following results T9/T39/MC/T60/T62.

Hideki Matsuyama (+1600), finished T6 last year adding to his impressive resume at this event. In his last start on Tour, Hideki finished T11 at the TOUR Championship.

Corey Conners (+1800), will make his return to Silverado Resort and Spa after missing the last two editions of this event. He has played in this event three times prior finishing T30/MC/T13. At East Lake, Conners struggled posting on two sub-70 rounds to finish solo 26th.

Maverick McNealy (+2800), was the runner-up at the Fortinet Championship last year. That was the only finish inside the top-50 in his four starts at Silverado. He played well at the end of the year finishing T31 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and T32 at the BMW Championship. Unfortunately, he was just outside the top 30 and failed to qualify for East Lake.

Previous Winners in the field; Max Homa, Stewart Cink, Cameron Champ, Kevin Tway, Brendan Steele, and Emiliano Grillo.

Rob Vinciletti: Early Soccer + 2022 MLB TOTAL OF THE YEAR info

On Tuesday we have our 2022 MLB 7* TOTAL OF THE YEAR Headlining from a 25-0 Totals System. Soccer play below.

The Champions League totals play is on the over 2.5 in the Inter Milan at Plzen match. Milan is the better team and likely wins here as they are a heavy favorite. However, Vicktoria Plzen has solid form here and will find the back of the net at least once. In their games we note that over 2,5 goals has registered in 12 of 14 and they have found the back of the net in every match over all competitions. Inter had gone over 2.5 in their first 5 matches but that has slowed over their last two. This meeting though should have pace and all 3 road games for Inter have had at least 3 tallies. Look for this one to play over. On Tuesday we have our 2022 MLB 7* Total Of The Year headlining and its backed by a totals system that has cashed 25 straight since 2004. Jump on at goldencontender@aol.com or on twitter/facebook. For the Soccer play. Go over 2.5 goals. Rob V- Golden Contender Sports..

One More NFL Pick, Week 2

Bengals -7 (-110), to win 2 units

Yea, I think the Bengals are going to CRUSH the Cowboys. Cooper Rush + a shaky offensive line + a below-average WR group + a defense that’s good but not built to withstand too much time on the field + most importantly, a Bengals team that just started to get in-rhythm by the end of Week 1’s game and they’re going to be absolutely AMPED to put on a show Sunday. Yea, I think Cincy BLOWS them out.
