March 9th FREE Premium Plays(CBB + NBA)

I’ve enjoyed a nice 2-0-1 start to the week, and I have made all 4 of today’s premium plays available for free! Premium plays are hitting at a 57.6% clip and have netted my members upwards of +53 units over the past 6 months. Click here to become a premium member and have all my plays sent to you everyday!

*CBB(1u): St Joseph’s 1H -1(-110) vs La Salle–Noon PM CT

While La Salle beat St Joe’s twice during the regular season, St Joe’s led by 9 and 12 at Halftime in those 2 meetings. St Joe’s might be 1-2 in their last 3 games, but those 2 losses came by a combined 3 points; in their last game, the Hawks picked up a double-digit home win against Rhode Island. I power-rate St Joseph’s 4 points better than La Salle on a neutral court, and I think they finally get over the hump and beat the Explorers from start to finish. However, I think this 1H play is safer given that they have come out hot against La Salle twice already and haven’t held up well in the 2H.

*CBB(1u): Northwestern -5(-110) vs Nebraska–5 PM CT

The public loves Nebraska after they picked up road wins against Ohio State and Wisconsin this past week, but I think some context is needed around those wins. Ohio State played Nebraska early in the week and almost certainly was looking ahead to matchups with Michigan State and Michigan later in the week. In one of the wilder moves I’ve ever seen, Wisconsin celebrated a conference championship with a win over Purdue before they even clinched the outright Big 10 title, setting themselves up for the ultimate letdown spot this past Sunday. At this time of the year, those let-down/look-ahead spots are out of play; every game could be your last. Northwestern beat these Cornhuskers by 24 and 12 in the regular season and enters this game off of a 13 point win against Minnesota. Nebraska has everybody’s full attention, and as such, I believe they will revert back to playing like the team that was 1-16 in conference play just last week. Don’t buy into the hype; Northwestern -5 is the play.

*NBA(1u): Wizards +4(-110) @ Clippers–9:30 PM CT

The Clippers have been feisty as sizable underdogs this season, but laying this many points is not their role. Given this is the second game of a back-to-back(with travel) and 3rd game in 4 nights for them, I feel good about playing against them here. The Wizards are sneakily playing well at the moment, winning 2 of their last 3. Sure, those wins came against the Pistons and Pacers, but they also played the Hawks to a 3 point game. In the first game of this road trip and catching the Clippers in poor current form, I think the Wizards keep this one within a possession and possibly win this one outright.

*ML Parlay(0.8u): Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Bulls(+117)–1:30 PM CT

Boston College beat Pittsburgh by 20 yesterday, but that says a lot more about Pittsburgh’s ineptness than it does Boston College’s potential. Wake Forest has a solid chance of winning this conference tournament, and they are even a team I think can make a deep run in the Big Dance. The Demon Deacons are solid on both ends of the floor and run at a pace that allows them to put teams like Boston College away. Wake Forest won this matchup by 30 earlier in the season; they might not want to put too much energy into this one with Miami waiting tomorrow, but I have no hesitation that Wake Forest will win this game

Vanderbilt gets an easy matchup with Georgia in the 1st round of the SEC Tournament. The Commodores handled the Bulldogs in each of their 2 regular season matchups, and I see no reason why that doesn’t continue today. Remember, this Georgia team is 6-25 overall and has just 1 win since December 20th. Georgia ranks 308th in defensive efficiency, while Vanderbilt ranks 46th. ‘Dores take care of business today.

The Pistons enter tonight having won 3 in a row, but do we really expect an 18-47 team to keep that rolling? With where Detroit is as an organization, they are much more concerned with getting a good draft slot than picking up wins when their season is toast. They’ll face a Bulls team that has lost 5 straight, but you have to consider the gauntlet that the Bulls have faced in this stretch(Grizzlies, Heat, Hawks, Bucks, 76ers). With no look-ahead spot in play, I like Chicago to get back on track tonight and pour everything into this one.

Premiums, 3.9

Feels like we’re gaining steam! Three straight winning nights, 8-3 overall, and for the most part we’re staying away from bets where there’s very little value. That’s a HUGE part of successful handicapping people– avoiding lines that are sharp and those games where it’s too close to call. Onto Wednesday, which has a giant NBA card!

NBA Picks:
  • Lean, Hornets +7
    • I can’t play against the Celtics right now but I have a sneaky feeling about this one. This is a pretty decent letdown spot for Boston after a big win against Brooklyn. Charlotte’s off a B2B but they need to win, and NOW. Desperation keeps players motivated- I wouldn’t bet on Boston here.
  • Bulls -6, 1 unit
    • This feels like an “explosion spot” for Chicago. As pedestrian as their defense is, they have the length to limit Detroit tonight. And as improved as Detroit has looked, their defense is no match for a motivated LaVine, DeRozan, and hopefully Vucevic gets his in this contest, too. The Bulls can’t afford to lose games like this leading up to the playoffs and their schedule is far from easy down the stretch. This is a play-on spot for me, but I wouldn’t take it over 6.
  • Heat TT over 112.5, 1.5 units
    • I don’t know if Miami can cover this line, but there’s a high probability that the Heat drop a TON of points against the Suns tonight. Phoenix is off a B2B, this is their third road game in 4 days, and as disciplined and steady as Monty Williams’ team is, this is a fully healthy Heat team, at home, off rest, and they’re primed to prove why they’re a big time contender against a Western elite. Oh yea, and Kyle Lowry returns for his second game after an ice-cold st game back. He’ll perform better – Rocket ships for Miami! Take it up to 115.
  • Timberwolves TT over 122.5, 1.5 units
    • I know maybe these team totals are getting old, but how can the OKC Thunder, off a blowout loss last night, stop this juggernaut Timberwolves offense? They won’t be able to. I’d take it up to 125.
  • Jokic PAR Prop over 51, 1 unit:
    • Will Barton could sit this one and the Kings should give Jokic plenty of soft space to work – this sets up as a big Nikola Jokic game.
  • Jazz TT over 117.5, 1.5 units
    • Okay, one more team total. If the Jazz can’t annihilate THIS version of the Blazers, something’s seriously, seriously wrong in the Utah locker room. Mitchell and Gobert should feast, and the Jazz should not take this game lightly at home; they need to stack wins before the postseason. I’d take this up to 119.5.
CBB Picks:
  • Penn State -3.5, 1 unit
  • Seton Hall -10, 1 unit
If you ever have any questions, message me here, on Twitter, or on Instagram. I will make myself available from 9am to 5pm every day, but please don’t expect an answer outside of those hours. I gotta shut it down sometimes. All picks are 1-5 stars based on unit size and confidence. 3 star picks are rare, 4-5 star picks are VERY rare. -Chris

NHL Preview & Picks – March 9th, 2022

We only two games going in the NHL tonight but both will be nationally broadcasted on TNT in the states. The first matchup is between the Capitals and the Oilers. The Capitals are coming off a game last night vs Calgary while Edmonton is also coming off a game against the Flames two nights ago. The second matchup is between the Canadiens and the Canucks which on paper may not seem like a great matchup given their place in the standings but, both teams have been red hot as of late. I’ll breakdown the second matchup between Montreal and Vancouver and may add another play.

Preview:

Montreal Canadiens

After a brutal start to the season following their run to the Stanley Cup finals last year, the Canadiens have seemed to catch fire under new head coach Martin St. Louis. They’re 7-1 in their last 8 games defeating some pretty solid opponents including Calgary, Toronto, and St. Louis.

Montreal ranks 31st in terms of Goals For per game averaging 2.41. Part of the reason for their recent success has been their increase in goal production as they’ve averaged 3.40 Goals For in their last 10. Under their new head coach, Montreal’s young talent has thrived mainly Cole Caufield. He wasn’t great in the beginning of the year only scoring 1 goal in the first 32 games. In just the last 11 games, he has 7 goals and 7 assists averaging over a point per game. With the increase in offensive production his ice time has also gone up with has certainly helped him.

The Habs struggle to generate offensive chances ranking 24th in Shots on Goal For and 22nd in High Danger Shots For. They have a -8.08 Goals For Above Expected which has a direct correlation to their Shooting % that ranks dead last. As I’ve mentioned before the Habs have had this offensive renaissance as of late and have not only increased their Shots For per game but have also been capitalizing on those chances as their Shooting % has gone up as well. One area of concern is their Power Play which is second to last in the NHL and has been even worse as of late.

Just like their offense, Montreal has been much much better in their last 10 games. Overall they’ve given up an average of 3.29 Goals Against per game but, in their last 10 they’ve cut that number to 2.80. One of the reason’s that number has dropped so much has been their ability to limit the number of shots against. On the year they give up an average of 34.0 Shots on Goal Against, ranking 29th but, in their last 10 they’ve only given up an average of 32.30. They do have a +6.98 Goals Against Above Expected which ranks 11th. Unlike their Power Play which has gotten worse over the past few games, their Penalty Kill has actually been better.

The Canadiens goaltender issues have only gotten worse since the start of the year. As most people know, Carey Price has taken the year off due to personal/injury issues. Then Jake Allen, their starting goaltender, gets hurt in January but is expected to return later this month. Following Allen, Andrew Hammond, who’s only played a few games for them got hurt recently and is out indefinitely. So it looks like Sam Montembeault, who’s actually started the most games for the Habs this season will get the start with Cayden Premeau backing him up. Montembeault started in their last game vs Edmonton and finished with a +1.08 GSAx. On the season he hasn’t been great with a -9.5 GSAx but as seen in his last performance, has been better as of late.

Vancouver Canucks

The Canucks return home from a four game road trip where they went 3-1. In their last game they went into the Scotiabank Arena and knocked off the Maple Leafs 6-4. Vancouver still has a small chance at getting into the playoffs. Given the run that they’re on right now it certainly seems like that probability will only increase. It’ll be interesting to see if the Canucks are buyers or sellers at the upcoming deadline. Given their recent revamp in their front office, I’m sure they’ll do something one way or the other.

Just like Montreal, the Canucks have been much better offensively as of late averaging 4.40 Goals For in their last 10. On the year, they average 2.82 Goals For which ranks 23rd. Vancouver actually does a decent job at generating offensive opportunities ranking 13th in Shots on Goal For. However, the sole reason for the Canucks increased Goals For average has been their Shooting %, jumping from 8.7% on the year to 13% in their last 10. There’s no other reason, and that rate of 13% is not sustainable at all so we’ll see how long that lasts. J.T. Miller leads the team in points and has been an absolute stud as of late. He has 6 goals and 11 assists in the last 9 games. The Canucks Power Play ranks 16th in the NHL and has been even better as of late converting on over 25% of their man advantage opportunities.

Despite the Canucks being much better offensively as of late, their defense has been much worse. On the season they rank 12th in Goals Allowed averaging 2.84 but in their last 10 games, they’re averaging 3.80 Goals Against. Vancouver is allowing pretty much the same amount of Shots Against, so that’s not the main cause. The Canucks are a very inconsistent team so you’re not sure what you’re going to get every night. In their past few games they’ve held Calgary, which is one of the best offensives in the NHL to 1 goal and another night they allow 7 against New Jersey. So you’re just really not sure what to expect. Their Penalty Kill is absolutely atrocious ranking dead last in the NHL and has been even worse as of late. The Canadiens don’t have a great Power Play so it’s not a major concern tonight but definitely something they need to try and fix moving forward.

Since Vancouver has had a few days off, All-Star Thatcher Demko is expected to get the start in net. He currently ranks 12th in the NHL in terms of Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with a +10.3. However, in his last two starts he’s allowed three or more goals in each of them. Demko did start in their previous meeting against the Canadiens and finished with a +1.27 GSAx.

Pick:

  • MONTREAL CANADIENS/ VANCOUVER CANUCKS OVER 6.0 (-110) – BetMGM
    • Just based off the way these teams have been trending offensively and defensively as of late, I like this game to go over. I get it is a “rivalry” of some sort but Montreal’s pace has really picked up as of late and given the recent struggles of both goalies, I think that only helps the total go over. I also wouldn’t be shocked if this line was to move to 6.5 but I honestly don’t expect it to.

Lean

  • EDMONTON OILERS (-125) – DRAFTKINGS
    • While the Oilers have not been great as of late, they face a Capitals team that’s coming off a hard fought battle against the Flames on Tuesday night. Washington will have to play their second game in less than 24 hours so just based off the fatigue factor and the Oilers pace of play, I like Edmonton here to wear them out. Vanecek started on Tuesday night so Ilya Samsonov will likely get the start for the Caps. Samsonov has been the worse goalie of the two and has a -7.1 GSAx on the season. This is not an official play due to the unpredictable nature of the Edmonton Oilers and more specifically their goaltending but if you’re looking for a bet in the early game, I lean the Oilers.

THE PLAYERS Championship – Preview & Picks

What a wild Sunday at Bay Hill, Scottie Scheffler captures his second win on the PGA Tour. He shot a 72 on Sunday to finish 5 under and narrowly edge out Tyrrell Hatton, Viktor Hovland, and Billy Horschel who all finished one shot back.

We didn’t end up cashing any outright winners but, we did end up hitting all three of out Top 20 bets (Homa +240, Kirk +240, Bez +240). On the week we ended up +1.48 Units moving our total to +26.64 Units in the past five weeks.

The “fifth major” takes place this week as we head to TPC Sawgrass for THE PLAYERS Championship. It should be another tough test for some of the worlds best golfers. This Pete Dye designed course features water on 17 of 18 holes which will force players to weigh the risk vs reward. Justin Thomas will look to defend his title which is something no one has been able to do since 1982.

Course/ Tournament History:

THE PLAYERS Championship was first held in 1974 and was conceived by then PGA Tour commissioner, Deane Beman. It was held at Atlanta Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia and took place in early September. Over the next two years it was held at different locations including the Colonial Country Club in 1975 and at the Inverrary Country Club in 1976. From 1977 to 1982 the event was held at Sawgrass Country Club which is very close to it’s current location, TPC Sawgrass. Since 1982, the Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass has hosted this event.

From 2007-2017 THE PLAYERS Championship took place in May. However in 2018, the event returned to March where it has been held since.

Unlike other tournaments that feature a sudden death playoff format, THE PLAYERS has a three-hole aggregate format that started in 2014. This tournament has only gone to extra hole’s once since this format change and that was back in 2015 where Rickie Fowler won.

The purse was increased to $20 million dollars this year, which is $5 million more than was offered in 2021. With the additional purse money, the winners share is also increased to $3,600,000 from last years $2,700,000.

Jack Nicklaus holds the record for most wins at this event with 3; 1974, 1976, 1978

Course Guide/ Scorecard:

The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass measures just over 7200 yards. This is one of the toughest courses on Tour as it has played over par in two of the past four years.

There’s trouble everywhere on this course with the most water danger holes on Tour and the ninth most bunkers. Given the layout of this course, it puts emphasis on players approach and short games. Most of the holes are dog legs which limits the players club selection off the tee preventing them from playing driver.

The greens are on the smaller size when compared to the tour average and run pretty quick. However, the forecast is calling for a ton of rain which should soften them up allowing players to attack the pin a little more.

The Field/ Odds:

THE PLAYERS features one of the best fields we’ll see all year with pretty much every top-100 player in the world scheduled to play. Given the $20 Million dollar purse offered this week, it’s not a shock that anyone who has qualified would willingly miss this event.

Jon Rahm leads the field in terms of odds, currently listed at 12-1. He finished 9th at TPC Sawgrass last year and has been playing some great golf as of late but just can’t seem to capture a win. Rahm’s putting continues to be his downfall as he’s lost strokes putting in his past three tournaments.

2021 Players Champion, Justin Thomas is listed around 14-1. In Thomas’ last five starts he’s finished 5-5-20-8-6 so he looks to be in great form as he tries to defend his title. No one has been able to achieve this feat of successfully winning The Players in back to back years since 1982.

Next up is Collin Morikawa, who’s also currently listed around 14-1. Collin is coming off a T2 at The Genesis Invitational where he made a late push Sunday but was unable to best Joaquin Niemann who went wire to wire. He made his tournament debut last year and finished 41st. He’s an elite ball striker which gives him an advantage here as approach play is crucial especially given the predicted forecast.

The last favorite at The Players is Rory McIlroy who’s currently listed anywhere from 16-1 to 22-1. Rory led the Arnold Palmer Invitational after the first round last week and looked like he was going to run away with it but struggled in the following days to end up finishing T13. Rory won his event back in 2019 and has finished inside the top-20 in his last five tournaments.

Other previous winners in the field include Si Woo Kim (’17), Jason Day (’16), Matt Kuchar (’12) , Henrik Stenson (’09), Sergio Garcia (’08), and Adam Scott (’04).

March 8th Premium Plays

Jan 15, 2022; Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, USA; Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland (10) celebrates after his team scored a three-point basket against the Oklahoma City Thunder during the second half at Paycom Center. Mandatory Credit: Alonzo Adams-USA TODAY Sports

*NBA(1.5u): Cavaliers -3(-110) @ Pacers–6 PM CT

The Cavaliers recently lost C Jarrett Allen to a finger injury, but this line is a stark overreaction to that injury. Allen only played 10 minutes in Cleveland’s last game, yet the Cavs adjusted and eventually beat the Raptors by 8. Before that, they gave the hottest team in the league(76ers) a run for their money and covered that game. With Darius Garland in the lineup, I fully trust the Cavs in this spot. This is not a particularly great spot for Indiana with this being their first home game off of a 4 game road trip, and they will head right back out on the road after tonight’s game. In that 4 game road trip, the Pacers played the Magic(2x), Pistons, and Wizards, arguably the easiest road trip you could ever muster together. Even so, the Pacers lost 3 out of 4. Cleveland has been trustworthy all season, and with Garland in there, they should take care of business tonight. I leaned this same direction at Cavs -4 this morning, so getting a full point in my favor, I’ll make this a multi-unit play and tonight’s best bet.

*ML Parlay(0.8u): Clemson, Warriors(+110)–3 PM CT

Clemson takes on NC State this afternoon in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. NC State being the lowest seed in this tournament is really saying something given Boston College and Pitt are as bad as they are; this Wolfpack team simply can’t defend. Clemson comes into today having won 4 straight and has hopes of making a deep run in this thing. I think Clemson -5 is a pretty sharp line, but I expect the surging Tigers to win this first round bout.

While the Warriors played in Denver last night, Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, and Andrew Wiggins didn’t even travel to that game, meaning this should be viewed as a pretty good rest spot for the Warriors’ main guys. Golden State has lost 5 straight and 7 out of their last 8, but I think that changes tonight. This team is nowhere near Brooklyn or Lakers territory as far as losing streaks go, and they get a nice revenge spot in this one after losing to the Clippers right before the All Star Break. The Clippers can be a feisty team, but they came back down to Earth in a major way with a 23 point home loss to the Knicks on Sunday. Given that the Clippers don’t step up in competition too well with their limited roster, I like Golden State to get back on track tonight.

Rob Vinciletti: NHL Power Play + NCAAB TOP Rated NEC Championship Info

Tuesday card has a Rare 6* NCAAB Conference Tournament Championship side along with a Platinum Supreme move. Other plays include the NBA Game Of The Week and an Afternoon Soccer Play. NHL Comp Play below.

The NHL Comp Play is on the NY. Rangers at 8:0 eastern. We will take a shot with the Rangers here tonight as a dog. NY has won 11 of 15 vs a team that just allowed 5+ goals, 4of 5 vs winning teams and 6 of 8 vs Western Teams. Minnesota has lost 6 of the last 7 and they are 0-5 playing a 4th game in 6 nights. On top of that we see that home favorites off a home favored loss that allowed 5 or more goals and lost the prior game as a road favorite are 0-5 vs a team that scored 4 or more goals like the Rangers. Look for the Rangers to get the win. On Tuesday a Powerful NCAAB Card is up with a Rare 6* and a an NCAAB Platinum Supreme move. We also have the NBA Power System Game of the week and an afternoon soccer play. See us at goldencontender@aol.com or on twitter/facebook to Jump on and cash out. For the NHL Play. Go with the NY. Another 3-1 day! Onto the next.

NBA Picks:
  • Nets -3.5, 2 units and
  • Nets TT over 122, 1 unit
    • I’m all in on the Nets today. As much as this team annoys me, they looked sensational the other night against the Celtics and probably should have won that game. The Hornets do not have the length or ability to prevent Durant, Kyrie, and others from having offensive success Tuesday. The Nets are playing for their shot in the playoffs, so they’re desperate, and they won’t take this game lightly. The Nets answer in a big way tonight. I wouldn’t take the TT beyond where it is, but I’d take the Nets up to a 5.5 point favorite.
  • Suns/Magic over 223, 1 unit
    • This has “track meet” written all over it. The Suns like to create space and should have little issue executing against the Magic defense, which is inconsistent at best. DeAndre Ayton will get his against Carter Jr., and the Suns have enough depth and exceptional guard play to run the floor with Orlando (since the Magic will inevitably try to cultivate tempo). I think this goes into the 230s – I have it at 230.5 being conservative.
CBB Picks:
  • No plays in college, but lean Gonzaga -13 and NC State +5.5.

-Chris
