MLB Picks and Predictions – May 24, 2021

A New York Mets hitter at home plate, swinging for the fences.

Yesterday was “one of those days” in MLB betting. Virtually all of my picks looked good in the early going and then they all turned to shit. Baseball is a game of details and tremendous volatility, especially over such a long season. The best pitchers and the best teams don’t always win, as we’ve seen, nor do they need to always win. In handicapping that means a ton of well-informed bettors with great angles are left with wages that push or lose, while trigger-happy fools win and think they’re onto something. It’s frustrating, but just like anything else it all reverts back to the mean eventually. Let’s hope some of that positive regression begins today because I see plenty of opportunity. Onto the picks!

Marlins win (125), 1.5 units: The Phillies have hit a lull. Losers of now 4 of their last 5 games and starting a long winding road trip where they take on 3 different teams away from Philadelphia, the Phillies will look for a turnaround today. Unfortunately they have to contend with Trevor Rogers (1.74 ERA, 1.05 WHIP over 51.2 innings), who’s 5th overall among pitchers in ERA. Rogers owned the Phillies in his last start, holding them to only 5 hits and 1 run in 7.2 innings. Because of all the talent they have in their rotation, Miami is a dangerous team when they find their bats. Lately they’ve performed better. Averaging 4.4 runs over their last 5 games, they’ll hope to keep their production going Monday against Philadelphia’s Zach Elfin (3.77 ERA, 1.15 WHIP over 57.1 innings). Eflin allows plenty of contact, his four-seam velocity (93.4 mph) and ground ball rate (42%) is decreasing, and he has real issues with command. The Phillies have the better offense and we could see some negative regression eventually for Rogers; I just don’t see this being the spot. Miami shouldn’t need to score much with their ace on the mound and the Phillies are cold and in a tough spot– I’ll take the home team.

Mets win (-140), 2 units: This stat alone may be worth betting on the Mets: New York is 11-4 at home and the Rockies are 2-17 on the road. That’s right: 2 wins and 17 losses. And this game is in Queens, in case you didn’t connect those dots yet. Disparity in offensive stats between two ballclubs can be hard to debunk but it’s not very difficult in this case. Colorado can slug and score plenty at Coors Field, it’s what their known for, but away from Coors they’re just not the the same team. The Rockies have slammed 37 homeruns at home and only 9 on the road. Away from Denver they’re batting .209, they’re slugging .300, and they have 1/3 the RBIs (50 away, 154 at home). They’ve played 9 more games at Denver but still, that’s bad. I won’t get into the pitching dual here; Gomber and Peterson have pretty similar profiles (although Gomber’s ground ball rate is concerning). The Mets just lost a frustrating series against the Marlins and they’re at the beginning of a long stretch at home against Colorado and Atlanta. Colorado is surely the more winnable series and I expect New York to take advantage, starting tonight.

Orioles win (-112), 1.5 units: Damn right I’m betting on John Means again. Means (1.70 ERA, 0.75 WHIP) finally looked human against the Rays in his last start, allowing 6 hits and 4 runs in just over 6 innings of play. I expect him to look better today. Means still commands the 3rd best WHIP in MLB  and a top 5 ERA, not to mention an incredible LOB percentage of 96.5%. Although we knew some of his elite numbers would see some negative regression, his rival is no match today. The Minnesota Twins and their reawakened bats will start Matt Shoemaker (6.08 ERA, 1.45 WHIP over 40 innings), who’s allowed a ton of hard contact and points in the early going. The Orioles have lost 6 games in a row and 10 out of their last 11 games. Their schedule is only getting more difficult, with series against the Twins twice, the White Sox, the Indians and Mets on the horizon. This is a big spot for Means to turn the ship around for Baltimore and I trust he can do it. Baltimore doesn’t have the offensive weapons of Minnesota but if they can limit the Twins’ bats they won’t need  a superb game at home plate. I’ll take the O’s in a desperate spot.

NBA Playoffs Picks and Predictions – May 24, 2021

The Nuggets Nikola Jokic, front-runner for NBA MVP, going up for a layup.

Yesterday was the day we needed, going 3-1 in NBA picks and finally getting a little redemption after a tough week that had about 100 bad beats. That’s the way this industry goes, it ebbs and flows, and that’s why bankroll management and ensuring you’re not overly invested in any one wager is so key. Onto more picks and as always, hopefully onto more wins. Happy new week, everyone!

Bucks win first QTR (-150), 2 units: Khris Middleton hit an amazing final shot in the first game of this series, sealing an OT win for the 3rd seeded Bucks. It was a tone-setter. Will Khris Middleton and other Milwaukee skill players continue to provide exceptional support for Giannis when the game is outside of his control? So far it seems that way, and that means the Bucks are a very dangerous contender in the East. We saw gutsy performances from more than just Middleton, though. While Antetokounmpo was missing free throws and still banking his $200 million contract, Brook Lopez was nailing hook shots, Jrue Holiday secured 11 rebounds and scored 20 points, and Middleton led the Bucks in assists. And the entire team finally really stepped up on defense. We expected positive regression from their defense and they looked like a different unit on that end of the floor.

I wanted to go with the over in this one (222) but I just can’t do it. Both of these units showed a lot of zeal on defense and the total is probably too high once again. Still, I’d lean to the over. Milwaukee wasn’t able to push the pace like they always do, if anything Miami controlled the tempo in game 1, and it’s a big reason why the Bucks almost lost. I expect the home team to stimulate the game-speed early and often.

That’s why I like the Bucks most in the 1st quarter. The Heat could definitely win this game and at +4.5, that seems like the right side to be on. I’ll lean their side but I can’t take it, not with what the adjustments I expect Milwaukee to make as stated above. That being said, the Heat were exhaustively scrappy in the first contest. Jimmy Butler was flying around the court sacrificing his body, Dragic and Robinson were lethal from the outside, Adebayo was assertive at the rim and the entire team played really tight defense. That’s who they but it’s really hard to maintain that level of energy against a team as talented as the Bucks. Especially against Giannis, who’s so long and agile, guarding the Greek Freak and other Bucks’ starters will take its toll.

Building off the momentum of that last second bucket from Middleton, I expect the Bucks to come out hot and in-rhythm Monday night. For the full game, who knows. Miami certainly has the gusto to get a win. If I had to make a prediction, I think Milwaukee steals another one here but this series could very well be tied once it moves to Miami. For tonight, I’ll take an amped up Bucks unit to go ahead early.

Nuggets -1.5 (-115), 2 units: I really love the Nuggets tonight. Lightning doesn’t strike twice but that phrase doesn’t really describe what happened in game 1, does it?

The Blazers legitimately beat Denver. While they flexed a blitzing offensive attack from the first quarter of play, Portland was able to really turn on the jets in the second half. Damian Lillard scored 16 points alone in the 3rd quarter, launching one big 3-pointer after another, and the Blazers out-scored the Nuggets 38-25. Up by 10 entering the fourth quarter, Portland was able to slow down the pace and lock-down Jokic and the Nuggets’ offense, allowing only 23 total points in the final 12 minutes. It was a complete effort from Portland in a game where Carmelo Anthony was 50% from beyond the arc and added 18 points off the bench, McCollum was efficient with 21 points, and big men Nurkic and Powell combined for 26 points and 15 rebounds. And again, like we see so often in the postseason, the Blazers’ defensive energy was at a different level and they were able to stifle the Nuggets’ on many occasions. They were also 94.7% from the free throw line. Denver was an abysmal 50% and only got to the charity stripe for 8 attempts. Expect the aggression and intensity from Denver to change tonight.

When you get a really good team like the Nuggets favored by this tiny amount at home after a game 1 loss, it’s one of the better bets in sports. The Blazers are certainly capable of going up 2-0 in this series, I’m not underestimating them, but Jokic is too good a leader and his supporting cast has proven how resilient and capable they are all year. The Nuggets are all-too-aware why they lost in game 1. Overly reliant on jump-shots and never really finding a rhythm, Denver struggled to find consistent offense against a Portland team that knew exactly who they were. Denver allowed the Blazers to dictate the pace of the game and they paid for it. Porter Jr. was an awful 1-10 from beyond the arc, Campazzo and Rivers combined for only 14 points and 8 assists, Millsap was underutilized off the bench, and Aaron Gordon wasn’t aggressive enough in the front court. Expect some positive regression on all fronts, especially when it comes to Denver getting to the free throw line. If they don’t attack the rim they won’t be able to dictate the pace. If they’re leading or favored early but they’re not forcing the ball down low, look for this game to turn in Portland’s direction again. If the underdogs are in rhythm, I don’t think the Nuggets can hang with the pace or skill of Portland’s perimeter shooters.

I don’t think Denver will let it get to that point. Expect the Nuggets to come out with a different energy and to tie this series at home.

NFC North 2021 Preview – Season Win Totals – Sports Betting

NFC NORTH:  The division that I always start with obviously has the most uncertainty due to the Aaron Rogers situation.  If Rogers leaves or at least doesn’t play for Green Bay, the win totals and futures within this division will all be greatly affected.   For now, I have to assume that he does play and that means we can only make a bet if we like the “over” with any of these teams.  The NFC North will have it quite difficult this year having to play the AFC North and the NFC West.  I think that it is safe to say that the Bears or the Vikings will take a massive step forward if Rogers is gone so it might be worth it to bet the over as a free roll on one or both of these teams.  Let’s get into some more details.

1. Green Bay Packers Win Total: NA

Packers Power Rating: 6

Schedule: Medium hard – At large games @ Kansas City, @ New Orleans, vs Washington

Key Losses:  C Cory Linsley, RB Jamal Williams, LB Christian Kirksey, G Lane Taylor

Key additions: WR Devin Funchess who sat out last year, QB Blake Bortles

Who they drafted: CB Eric Stokes, C Josh Meyers, WR Amari Rogers and more

Summary:   I have to assume that Rogers is going to be here and play a full season in order to do this properly.  Obviously if he doesn’t play or leaves the team, things will change in this whole division.  The Packers really didn’t lose much talent but they do have a pretty hard schedule playing the AFC North and the NFC West.  The packers didn’t loss too much to free agency and they had a decent enough draft.  They will be good against the pass again, but will struggle against the run.   This team will need the lead in their tougher games if they can’t stop the run.   I really do like coach Lafleur and even if Rogers is gone, there maybe some value on them.  The Packers Pythagorean was a few games lower than their actual record but it’s all about the quarterback.

MY Season Number:  12.1

Action: No Play until we know more about Rodgers

2. Chicago Bears – Vegas Win Total 7.5

Chicago Bears Power ratings: 0

Schedule: Medium Hard – At large games @ Las Vegas, @ Tampa Bay, vs Giants

Key Losses: OLB Roy Robertson-Harris, OT Charles Leno, CB Kyle Fuller, QB Mitch Trubisky,

Key Additions:   QB Andy Dalton, OLB Jeremiah Attaochu, CB Desmond Trufant

Who they drafted: QB Justin Fields, OT Tevin Jenkins

Summary: The Bears were lucky to even make the playoffs last year due to the Cardinals losing to the Rams, but what I will say is that they were definitely the worst team that made it in.   In saying that, I have to wonder if just getting rid of Mitch will make this defense care more in the end of their games.  The big problem with the Bears is that they don’t have a good coach.  Nagy can design plays but he consistently gets out-coached and unless he improves, the Bears could be a .500 team once again.  The good news for the Bears is that their season win total is low for a 17 game schedule and if Rogers is gone, maybe chalk up an extra win for this team.   I think that there is some upside for this Bears team being that the core of their defense is still in tact.  I also like the fact that Andy Dalton is playing for his future along with Matt Nagy coaching for his job.   Justin Fields is lurking and I expect him to become the starter at some point this season.  Gonna be interesting on how this all plays out.

My season number: 9.1 wins

Action – Over 7.5 wins is the play – 1 star

3. Minnesota Vikings: Win Total 9

Vikings Power Rating: -.5

Schedule: Medium  – At Large games vs @ LA Chargers, vs Dallas, @ Carolina

Key Losses: TE Kyle Rudolph, LT Riley Reiff, FS Anthony Harris, DE Ifeadi Odenigbo

Key Additions: DE Stephon Weatherly, DT Dalvin Thomlinson, S Xavier Woods, OLB Nick Vigil

Who they drafted: T Christian Darrisaw, QB Kellen Mond, LB Chazz Suratt, G Wyatt Davis

Summary:  The Vikings are still getting younger and they made a lot of moves in free agency.  My biggest worry as usual is Kirk Cousins at quarterback.   He is the same guy who beats up on the smaller teams and crumbles when he gets into big pressure situations.  You like that?   I wonder if Kellen Mond is going to take over at some point being that he was drafted so high.   The Vikings should have a very good offense this year but they will probably be a team that I will bet on to get margin off of the worst teams that they will play.   There of course is some upside on the Vikings if Rogers is gone, but I can’t trust how bad that D was least year.   I do like their coach and think he might be able to carry this team into the playoffs.

My season number:  8

Action Lean under

4. Detroit Lions: Win Total – 5

Detroit’s power rating: -8

Schedule: – Hard – At large games @ Denver, Philadelphia, @ Atlanta

Key losses: QB Matt Stafford, Coach Matt Patricia, WR Kenny Golladay, WR Marvin Jones, K Matt Prater, ILB Jarrad Davis, RB Kerryon Johnson, WR Mohammed Sanu, ILB Reggie Ragland, CB Desmond Trufant and a ton more

Key additions:   Coach Dan Campbell, QB Jared Goff, WR Breshard Perriman, RB Jamal Williams, and a bunch of bums

Who they drafted: OT Penei Sewell, DT Levi Onwuzerike, DT Alim McNeil and a bunch of hmmmm

Summary:  New coach on their honeymoon?  Not something that I am trying to bet the over on.  Jared Goff might be the only motivated player this year.  The Lions traded Matt Stafford and are obviously on a full rebuild.  They didn’t seem to want to go after a quarterback in this draft which tells me that they might be planning this for next year.  It must be quite weird being in Jared Goff’s shoes, but at the same time, he made his money and the Rams owned up to their mistakes.  I actually wonder if the Lions want him to do really good in the first place.  This might be a Jared Goff vs the world type season.  The Lions have a very hard schedule this year and I don’t expect many wins even if they do put forth a large effort.   This team be loaded with draft picks next year and I lean under the 5.

My season number:  4 wins

 Action: lean under 5 wins

NBA Playoff Picks and Predictions – May 23, 2021

Chris Paul vs. the Lakers

How about them Blazers, eh? If they keep that up I may become a believer. Clamped down on Jokic in the second half, electric from the perimeter. Good stuff. And who doesn’t love a Damian Lillard takeover? What an enigma that dude is. We were 2-3 yesterday, not ideal, but we chug along since that’s all you can do in this industry. Onto the picks!

Wizards/Sixers under 228.5 (-110), 1.5 units and Lean, Sixers -8 (-110): We saw some trends in yesterday’s games. It’s the usual trend we see when the playoffs begin– shots are a little harder to make and defenses really start to step up. It’s like suddenly teams like the Blazers and Bucks are just as talented on that end of the court as they are offense. Where was that during the season? Well, motivation was the issue and it appears that won’t be a thing in the postseason (thank God). Not all the unders hit yesterday but we saw really low scoring quarters and better overall effort on the defensive end of the floor. The Sixers deserve to be an 8 point favorite at home as the #1 seed and I lean to their side in this contest. As well as Beal and Westbrook have played and as electric as their offense can be, the 76ers are methodical and precise and should throw off the Wizards with their shut-down defense throughout this contest. Still, the 8th seeded Wizards are capable of staying in ball games and shocking opponents. The way they ended their season has me staying away from betting on the Sixers here. We’ve also seen great effort on defense from Washington players like Hachimura and Ish Smith and I expect them and other skill players to make life difficult for the Philadelphia shooters today. The Sixers know the Wizards are going to try and out-run and overwhelm them with their 1st place tempo, while the Wizards know that the Sixers are going to feed Embiid and try to beat them in the front court. Simmons and Harris and even Howard off the bench are key cogs in that machine, too. Two familiar foes in a playoff battle? Give me the under.

Suns win first half (-130), 2 units: This is a tough game to handicap but the Suns deserve to be favorites and I’m glad they are. Still, I have to avoid the full game line (Suns are -2.5 as I type this). Anything favoring the Suns in between that one and two possession area is too much for me. For the first half line though, I’ll go with Phoenix. We saw the Lakers struggle to put solid 1st/2nd quarters together against the Warriors in the play in game and they might struggle at first again today. For as great a leader as Lebron is and for as much talent as they have surrounding Lebron and Davis, this is a team that hasn’t played together very much this year. Chris Paul and the Suns are built on team chemistry. Paul facilitates better than any player in the NBA and it’s the reason why Phoenix leads the league in assist ratio. Pass-pass-pass-shoot: that’s the way most Phoenix possessions end up (unlike most NBA teams and their penchant for isolation basketball). I expect a Chris Paul led team, with Devin Booker all their skill players full of excitement at home, to come out fluid and showing a ton of chemistry. The Lakers could and just might pull ahead in the second half, but Phoenix in the first feels like a great bet.

Hawks/Knicks under 213 (-110), 1 unit and Capela under 15.5 rebounds (-120), 1.5 units: The only thing that would make this game go over is if the Hawks have a huge offensive quarter like Portland did last night. I don’t see that against the Knicks defense. New York runs at the slowest pace in the association and should be able to put the clamps down on an offense that’s already pretty average in Atlanta. Atlanta is also pretty darn good on defense, ranked 12th in points allowed, and the Knicks have had their struggles on offense. The Hawks do a lot of things well but nothing that jumps off the page or that’s hard to contain. Trae Young can score outside shots all day but the Knicks’ defenders will have a plan to limit his opportunities. The same can be said for Clint Capela. The 27 year old Swiss has been an absolute legend under the rim all year, averaging over 14 rebounds a game. That’s an insane amount of rebounds to average in the NBA. One adjustment I have to make in the postseason when I’m handicapping games is instead of always following trends and asserting my knowledge into my wagers, I need to fade them sometimes, too. Why? Because by this point, NBA coaches and players have figured out the same things we have. The Knicks know Clint Capela is a badass and they’ll do everything they can to limit the Hawks’ second-chance opportunities. He’ll get his, but 16+ rebounds doesn’t seem likely against Julius Randle and the Knicks’ solid front court. It’s that and the under for me in what should be a gritty bar fight type of game.

Lean Jazz -9 (-105) and Lean under 217 (-110): This is a huge line for a playoff game so I won’t play it, though it does feels very deserving. The most consistent team in the NBA with the most wins overall faces one of the most volatile in the Memphis Grizzlies. Memphis definitely earned their bid into the big dance– that win against Golden State was impressive– but they’re still far from a championship contender and I think they’ll feel that tonight. Utah is top 5 in so many categories it’s stupid. They should be able to command and maintain control in this game, challenging the Grizzlies early and often on defense and managing an effective offensive game-plan throughout. I also lean under because if Memphis proved anything in the play in tournament, it’s that their defense has another level to it. We didn’t see it much during the season but it’s there. We all know the Jazz can play really exceptional defense and in the playoffs, I can’t see this number rising over 220. Since it’s lined nearly exactly where I would have it, the under is only a lean for me.

MLB Picks and Predictions – May 22, 2021

The Red Sox.

This is an abbreviated article today but I definitely see value in a few games. After falling back to earth last night at 1-3, our record is 10-6 this week. Let’s get some Ws.

Diamondbacks (-121), 2 units: Madison Bumgarner has redeemed his rough start to the season and looks to be back in true form. The team reported a groin injury for their ace earlier this week but also said it won’t be a concern. That’s something to watch, but I still trust Bumgarner over Anthony Senzatela, who last time out had a dominant performance against Arizona. Senzatela isn’t good enough to maintain dominance against any team and this is a good revenge spot for the D-Backs after an uninspiring performance by their offense last night, much to the delight of German Marquez. I’m hammering AZ.

Orioles (+138), 1.5 units: This is a fade on Jon Lester, who’s been on the decline for years and as you probably already know from reading my posts– I love fading him. Baltimore’s Bruce Zimmerman hasn’t been electric by any means but he’s young and talented and capable of holding off the volatile Nationals offense. I see the Orioles taking advantage. Baltimore isn’t an exceptional offense overall but they’re top 10 against lefties and that should give them should extra confidence today. The value is on the O’s.

Rangers first five +0.5 (+105), 1 unit: I think the Astros will probably win this full game but this first 5 is too good to pass on. The Rangers are not a good team but Jordan Lyles, as today’s article at ATS.io discusses, is not loved by the betting community. Lance McCullers is. I’m a McCullers fan myself, but the inconsistency of the Astros’ bats and the potential of Lyles is enough for me to sprinkle a unit here. Lyles lacks command but he’s had some exceptional starts, including a recent little flex when he had 6 strikeouts and only allowed 1 run over 6 innings against the Yankees. Taking a shot on Texas here.

Red Sox (-125), 2 units: Boston has the better offense, their bullpen is fully rested after a nice day off yesterday via the blowout, and Nathan Eovaldi’s profile is better than the stats show. I’d trust him over Phillies’ upstart young gun Spencer Howard, who has all the tools but lacks the experience at 24 years old (and it’s shown in 3 short starts thus far).

MLB 5/22/21 Saturday Super Plays – Sports Betting

Cleveland Indians ace Shane Bieber at the mound.

Sorry that I do not have time for write ups (kids birthday parties) but here is what I am playing today.

Cleveland Indians -171 – 2 stars – Gotta bet on the Biebs at this price vs a struggling Twins.

Brewers/Reds over 8.5 -120 – 2 stars – Neither pitcher Anderson nor Gray make me think that these 2 teams won’t hit today.  Wind slightly blowing out.

UFC Fight Night 188 Free Plays – 5/22/21

Cody Garbrant vs Rob Font -115 –

This should actually be a great event in the Bantam Weight class.  Both fighters are are hungry to move up into championship consideration and both fighters are ranked in the top 5 at 135 lbs.   Cody Garbrant is a KO machine.  He has 12 wins and 3 losses and out of his 15 fights, only 2 of them went to decision.  All 3 of his losses came against top competition over the last 4 or so years and Cody has won his last fight against a solid contender in Raphael Assuncao by TKO at the end of the second round.  Rob Font at 18-4 has been an up and down fighter until that last loss in June of 2018 to Assuncao.  After that fight, he ripped 3 wins in a row against goof fighters like Sergio Pettis and Marlon Moraes.  The thing that sticks out for me is that Rob Font has never been knocked out in his 22 fights and his 4 losses came submission or decision.  Rob Font has never submitted anyone and will be focusing on the KO.   I think that both of these fighters are pretty evenly matched but I also think that there is some value to to over 2.5 rounds here.  I can see both fighters taking more of a defensive position being that this is a 5 round fight and I also have to think that the only way that Garbrant wins this fight is by decision being that Font is so hard to knock out.  My only worry is Font knocking out Garbrant but I have to think that Cody has learned his lesson to protect his jaw for at least 3 rounds or so.

Over 2.5 rounds +100 – 1.5 stars

Edmen Shahbazyan vs Jack Hermansson -155

This should be a great fight here and it was supposed to happen last week during UFC 262, but someone in Edmen’s corner got Covid and they had to postpone for safety reasons.   I am going to get right to the point here.   Shahbazyan is 11-1 with 9 KOs while Hermansson is 21-6 with 11 KOs, 6 Submissions and 4 decisions.  Edmen’s only loss game by KO to Derek Brunson back in August.  Lets just get it right out there that I do not understand this line.   Edmen was looked at as the great young and up and coming middleweight fighter at 23 years old who will soon challenge Izzy for the title until he lost to Derek Brunson.  Edmon was priced at -270 vs Brunson and lost outright while cashing some of our nice plus money tickets.  My question is, how the heck do you go from -270 against a great fighter like Brunson to +130 vs a tier 2 type fighter like Jack Hermansson.  Edmen was also -230 vs Brad Tavares back in November of 2019.  Don’t get me wrong, I like Jack and he is a very talented fighter but I don’t think that he is elite and I think that Edmen’s stand up game is still very good and that could put Jack on the ground against a guy who has never been submitted.  in Jack’s last 3 fights, he lost 2 of them to tier 1 guys like Marvin Vettori adn Jared Cannonier and he beat Kelvin Gastelum by using a sneaky heal hook.  Is Edmen a tier 1 fighter?  I am not sure of that but I do not think he is as low as tier 3 in my book.  I think the price is wrong in this fight and it should be Edmen as the favorite at maybe -140 or so.   I’ll grab the dog.

Edmen Shahbazyan +130 – 2 stars

NBA Playoff Picks and Predictions – May 22

Jokic with the slam dunk.

The NBA Playoffs are finally here! Here are my best bets and predictions for the first slate of the 2020-2021 postseason:

Heat/Bucks under 227 (-110), 1.5 units (and lean Heat +5): Jimmy Butler was recently quoted saying, “I’m stupidly locked in,” and you know what? I believe him. For 2 years running Jimmy has brought a moxie and toughness to Miami and it’s become emblematic of what they represent to the league. Scrappy and hustling defense. Efficient and in-your-face offense. Resiliency. The Heat waltz into the playoffs with a notch under their belt that a lot of other Eastern Conference teams can’t claim: they have NBA Finals experience. So when Jimmy exudes and expresses confidence about his team heading into this weekend, I’m inclined to take him seriously. Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks, on the other hand, aren’t in their usual top 2 spot heading into the postseason. The Greek Freak has struggled through some injuries and his team has struggled to play consistent basketball, particularly on defense. The Bucks are fast-paced and hyper-reliant on Giannis for success. While I think that may ultimately derail them from ever winning a championship, the Heat that could derail their immediate chances if they’re not careful. Whatever team controls the game controls the pace and usually has more affect on the total. I’m betting on Miami’s ability to affect this game enough that we see an under. The Heat play at an extremely slow tempo (29th, second slowest only to the Knicks), are top 5 in points allowed and top 7 in defensive efficiency. The only way to stop the Bucks, the NBA’s 1st placed team in points per game, is to slow down Giannis. That’s especially true at Fiserv Forum. A ton of money was made on betting the Heat as underdogs last year in the postseason. While I’ll lean their side today, I’ll bet on their defense and pace affecting this game enough that we get a total well below 227.

Clippers -5 (-115), 1.5 units: If you listened to my Western Conference Playoff Preview podcast that I put out this week, you’d know that I don’t feel great about the Dallas Mavericks’ chances to make the Finals. I mean no disrespect by that; I just can’t see it. There’s a ton of elite teams in the West and the Clippers might be at the top of that heap. Los Angeles’ “other team” is one of the most complete units in the NBA. They’re #1 in the league in 3 point shooting percentage, they’re top 5 in effective field goal and true shooting percentage, and top 8 in both defensive and offensive efficiency, the latter of which they’re #2 overall. But forget all the stats– one look at their roster and it’s plain to see how elite they are. The question is: will they play in-sync with so little time all together and all healthy throughout the year? It bodes well for the Mavericks that Kristap Porzingis is back in the lineup, but how healthy is he? Dallas depends on Kristap as Luka’s number 2 guy but knee pain and soreness has kept him out of the lineup for long stretches of the season. While the Dallas roster isn’t shallow by any means, Kristap and others will have to step up immensely if they want to contend with LAC. In three meetings this year, the Mavericks got the best of the Clippers twice. One of those wins was against a Clippers squad missing Kawhi Leonard, but the other victory was a vintage Luka performance– the Slovenian scored 42 points and had 9 assists to go with it. Luka will need to do that over and over again if the Mavericks have a chance today and in this series. I’m betting on the more complete team to take game 1 by two possessions– the regular season is over.

Nets -8 (-110), 1 unit: This line has gotten a little too big for us to overly invest in but this is the only way I can look. Boston showed some really solid defense in their win against the Wizards to earn the 7th seed but this is a different beast. For the first time in a long time Durant, Harden and Kyrie are all healthy and ready to rock. The last thing Brooklyn wants to do is flounder in game 1 and give Boston confidence. I expect a fast-paced, lethal offensive attack from the Nets to start off this series at home. As good as the Celtics can play in moments, and as much as Brooklyn annoys the piss out of me, Jayson Tatum and Kemba Walker (although Tatum has played brilliantly recently) have limits to their production and I don’t see them being able to keep up. If you like the Celtics’ side and think they can be really competitive here, consider the under 229.5, too.

Nuggets -1 (-110), 2 units and Blazers/Nuggets under 227.5 (-110), 1 unit: Two separate bets. The Blazers appear to be the more public team here and that only benefits our wager. I love the Blazers and Damian Lillard is easily one of my favorite players, but this line and the books appear to be discrediting what Denver has done this year. It’s especially downplaying how well they’ve played without Jamal Murray. Since Murray went down with a torn ACL, the Nuggets have won 72% of their games (13 of 18) and kept their spot atop the Western Conference. Sitting comfortably in the 3rd seed to open the playoffs. Nikola Jokic leads a deep roster full of skill-players that know exactly how to best help their teams’ chance to win. Aaron Gordon is perfect for his role as a gritty defender, rebounder, and high percentage shooter. Michael Porter Jr. has taken Murray’s place as a talented and athletic guard capable of scoring a ton of points on any given day. Solid offensive and defensive support from players like Millsap and Campazzo and others off the bench round up a rotation led by Jokic, who commands and facilitates his players better than any big man in the NBA. And all they do is win. Maybe it’s Jokic’s mentality, but the Nuggets are a very cerebral and consistent team. Kind of like the Colts in the NFL (especially when they have good quarterback play), the Nuggets are just too deep at every position to get outplayed most nights. The Blazers aren’t shallow either, but they’re not as consistent as Denver. Portland ended their 2021 season on a high, winning 10 of their last 12 games, including a meaningless win against the Nuggets in their final contest. Denver bested them twice before that in two games where Jokic dominated, scoring 41 in the first matchup and 25 in the second, which connects to the real issue of the Blazers– defense. Jokic and company have had their way with a Portland unit ranked 29th in defensive efficiency and 23rd in points allowed. The Denver offense is top 8 in both ppg and offensive efficiency. The Portland offense can produce and they have a ton of talented scorers; it’s just really hard to be as efficient as they need to be to overcome their struggles on the other end of the floor. I trust what I’ve seen from Jokic and Denver this year at they’re hosting game 1 in their home arena– I’m on the Nuggets to win.

As far as the small under bet goes, the Blazers and Nuggets both play at surprisingly low tempos (19th and 26th, respectively). The nerves of game 1 and the expected positive regression that comes with playoff defense, combined with their slow tempos, has the total a little too high for me. I’ll take the under for a humble 1 unit.

MLB Picks and Predictions – May 21, 2021

White Sox hitters celebrating after a big hit.

A 3-0 day makes us 7-1 the past 2 days, 9-3 on the week! Feeling locked into MLB and ready for more wins– Happy Friday people!

White Sox win (-110), 2 units: If Giolito and some of the White Sox non-aces keep pitching like they have been, Chicago is going to be a real problem this year. Already boasting one of the best and most consistent offenses in MLB, the White Sox take their talents to the Bronx to face the legendary Yankees Friday night. Carlos Radon (5-1, 1.47 ERA, 0.87 WHIP over 37.2 innings) got whacked in his last start but that doesn’t deter me. The Sox ace has been consistent and commanding all year and I think he can limit a Yankees lineup that’s over-reliant on the deep ball. The Yankees are starting leftie (alert!) Jordan Montgomery today (4.75 ERA, 1.15 WHIP over 41.2 innings), one of the more hittable and vulnerable starters of NYY’s rotation. You probably already know what the White Sox do to lefties and we’re getting the visiting team at a nice, low number. That’s sneaky but I’ll chase it– I trust the White Sox bats and Radon to get a W.

Nationals -1.5 (-105), 1.05 units: Stephen Strasburg (6.30 ERA, 1.60 WHIP over 10 innings) will return to the mound Friday as he takes on the Baltimore Orioles and Jorge Lopez (6.35 ERA, 1.41 WHIP over 34 innings). I’m choosing to ignore Strasburg’s early numbers. The 32 year old long-time Nationals star clearly wasn’t right to start the season and he’ll look to redeem himself against a very beatable opponent. I love what the O’s have brought to the table so far, both in pure numbers and how they attack the game, but this just feels like the table is set for a Strasburg win. According to MLB Trade Rumors, the Nationals are “sitting 18th in each of ERA (4.41), SIERA (4.19) and strikeout minus walk rate (14.7 percentage points).” Considering how historically lethal the Washington rotation has been, that’s definitely a disappointment. Fedde is out of the rotation temporarily anyway since getting tested positive for COVID-19, so this opens up a nice window for Strasburg to come to the rescue. Lopez has been consistent in that he lacks command. The 28 year old righty is allowing 2.12 HR/9 innings and has a subpar 66.2% LOB rate. The Nationals bats aren’t always accountable but with Strasburg back, at home against a below-average thrower, this feels like a win by margin. I’m on the Washington run line.

Diamondbacks win (+133), 1 unit and Diamondbacks/Rockies over 11 (-125), 1.5 units: Two separate bets but not a bad parlay! I love playing on big scoring at Coors Field and I like playing it even more when German Marquez (5.56 ERA, 1.68 WHIP over 45.1 innings) is on the mound. Over 6 starts at home, Marquez has allowed 5.5 hits and 3.3 runs per game over 29.2 innings. Considering Coors Field is that terrible? No. But it’s not great for the team’s expected ace. The Diamondbacks aren’t an elite offense but they have averaged 4.3 runs in 3 games in Denver, though one of those games drastically drops that number since Arizona laid a big goose egg against Senzatela. Seth Frankoff earns his second start in a tough spot tonight. He looked solid in his first outing, allowing 2 hits/2 runs over 4 innings against the talented Nationals. The 6’5″ 215 pound globetrotter has a ton of potential and could earn a longer stay in the Diamondbacks rotation if he shows confident command on the road in this hitter’s stadium. Both of these ballclubs come into tonight on long losing streaks (Arizona has lost 5 in a row and 8 of their last 9, while Colorado has lost 5 in a row and 7 out of their last 10). Something’s gotta give. I’ll put a unit on the underdog and for another day of big below the great Rocky Mountains.
