AFC East 2020 Season Win Totals

The AFC East – Finally this conference is starting to even up.  The Dolphins signed a drafted a ton of players, the Bills made the playoffs last year, and the Jets had a great draft.   Let’s not forget the elephant in the room with Tom Brady leaving the Patriots for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  This conference plays the AFC West and the NFC West which in my opinion is pretty hard.  Lots of travel is involved here and these teams will have to make some adjustments.

  1. New England Patriots – Vegas Win Total 9 juiced to the under -130

Schedule – Hard – At large games vs Houston and Baltimore

Key losses:  QB Tom Brady, ILB Kyle Van Noy, OLB Jaimie Collins, DT Danny Shelton, C Ted Karras, WR Phillip Dorsett, FB James Devlin

Key additions: WR Sefan Diggs, DL Beau Allen, FS Adrian Phillips, WR Marquise Lee, QB Brian Hoyer the team destroyer

Whom they drafted: S Kyle Dugger, Edge Josh Unche, Edge Anfernee Jennings and a whole lot of Patriot type nobodies

Summary:  Unless you have been living under a rock, Tom Brady is now gone and so is a bunch of other dudes.   I remember when Tom Brady tore his ACL and was out for the season and Belichick somehow still lined up 9 wins and made the playoffs.   Well that was very impressive to me but it was also part of the fact that the division has always been bad.   This division is better this year and the Patriots have a very hard schedule.  Towards the end of the season, I imagine they will stay on the West coast after they play the Chargers and then go to the Rams that Thursday night.  The Patriots will then go into their bye week and have to go to Miami after.   I do not like this schedule one bit without a leader like Tom Brady.  I think that there is a better chance that this team gets 0-6 wins rather than over 9 wins.   Take the under.

Summary:  Under 9 wins

2. Buffalo Bills – Vegas Win Total 9 juiced to the over -140

Schedule – Easy – At large vs Tennessee and Pittsburgh

Key losses: DE Jordan Phillips, DE Shaq Lawson, CB Kevin Johnson

Key additions: DE Mario Addison, OLB AJ Klein, DT Vernon Butler, DT Quinten Jefferson, CB Josh Norman

Whom they drafted:  Edge AJ Epenesa, RB Zach Moss, QB Jake Fromm

Summary:  I don’t love who the Bills lost in Shaq Lawson and Jordan Phillips.  These guys were the leaders in sacks on this team and losing both will hurt.   I know they drafted A.J. Epenesa and picked up Mario Addison who should fill that void but I expect some regression there.   The rest of the team looks very solid to me and they had a nice Pythagorean win total of 9.8.  I had to give them a half win due to them benching guys their last game vs the Jets last year bringing last years wins to 10.5.   This is the team who should win the division and I think Josh Norman should have some gas left in his tank to help big against the pass.  What can I say.  I have them at about 9 wins with some upside and they win the division.   I took this at +175 back in April but I think there is value at any + money.

Action – Lean Over

3. New York Jets – Vegas Win Total – 7 juiced to the under -130

Schedule – Hard – At large games vs Indianapolis and Cleveland

Key losses: WR Robbie Anderson, T Brandon Shell, G Tom Compton, CB Daryle Roberts, WR Demaryius Thomas

Key additions: T George Fant, C Conner Mcgovern, G Greg Van Roten, WR Breshard Perriman, CB Pierre Desir

Whom they drafted: T Mekhi Becton, WR Denzel Mims, S Ashtyn Davis, Edge Jabari Zuniga

Summary: Do you think the Jets care about protecting there quarterback this year?  I sure his heck do.   They went nuts on their offensive line in free agency and drafted the most athletic Tackle in the draft in Mekhi Becton.   I also think that they stole the best Wide Receiver in the draft in Denzel Mims.   I had to punish this team a half game for the easy Bills game at the end of the year, but the toughest thing for me is that their hard schedule with at large games against Indianapolis and Cleveland don’t look deserving of a 3rd place divisional team.  I think that this is the year that Adam Gase and Sam Darnold have to put something together.   The Jets and not the Patriots should be the team this year that pushes the Bills. They need at least 8 wins and maybe they can pick a few up from the Patriots.   In saying that, My calculation has them at 7.4 so no play for me.

Action – Lean over

4. Miami Dolphins – Vegas Win Total 6.5

Schedule – Medium– At large vs Jacksonville and Cincinnati

Key losses: Absolutely nobody

Key additions: CB Byron Jones, OLB Kyle Van Noy, DE Shaq Lawson, G Ereck Flowers, DE Emmanual Ogbah, RB Jordan Howard, C Ted Karras

Whom they drafted: QB Tua Tagovailoa, T Austin Jackson, CB Noah Igbinoghene, and a bunch of others

Summary: The Dolphins pretty much busted out the pocket book and spent a ton of money.   They didn’t really lose anyone that makes a difference in free agency.   I was actually surprised that this team won 5 games last year and ended their season on such a high note by beating the Patriots in Foxborough.  The thing that we have to take into place is the Pythagorean wins at only 3.6.  As you can see, this team certainly over-achieved last year.  The outlook for the fish is volatile and can be good or bad if they can’t put it all together.   QB Ryan Fitzpatrick does amazing things as a backup but for some reason when he is named the actually starter or QB 1, he looks like he has no business being in the NFL.   There is also a lot of unknowns for me about coach Flores.  It is his second year and I need him to prove his worth.   I think that the Dolphins covered pretty much every position in free agency and in the draft except Wide Receiver.   I have their wins at a generous 7.3 but it isn’t enough to get to a play for me.

Summary: Lean over 6.5

The 2020 Santa Anita Derby Free Play

The Santa Anita Derby

The Santa Anita R8 on June 6th is a mile and 1/8 race this weekend that is a Grade 1, $400,000 race for 3-year-olds and also servs as a prep race for the Kentucky Derby, which was postponed until Sept. 5 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  The field in this race is pretty short as usual but the share of the pie might be decent due to the number of people who will be interested.   The Favorite in this race is a Baffert horse named Authentic and he will be right at home at this track.   He is a deserving favorite being undefeated with the top Beyer’s speed figure at 98.  Honor A.P. is the second favorite currently at 5/2.   The last race that both of these horses ran in happened to be at the San Filipe at this same track where Authentic coasted to a win with ease by 3 or four lengths.   I honestly think that Authentic is the real deal here but I am definitely not sold on Honor A.P.   I think this horse has a chance to not hit the board here with the stronger competition.   The horse that I will have as my favorite to place in my exacta is Rushie.   I like how he won 2 of his last three races and how he is trending up in speed to an 89 Beyer.  I also have to throw in an “oh please God” exacta due to the fact that favorites only win 1/3 of the time.  to Here are  the plays:

AFC West 2020 Season Win Totals

Feb 2, 2020; Miami Gardens, Florida, USA; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) and head coach Andy Reid celebrate after beating the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV at Hard Rock Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports

AFC West – The Superbowl champion Kansas City Chiefs came from this division and it looks to me that 2 other teams are up and coming.    The AFC West plays the NFC South and the AFC East divisions which I could  call medium hard.   My biggest 3 questions here is if the Raiders can make that step forward to the playoffs, if Denver’s Drew Lock is really a franchise quarterback, and if Kansas City shows any signs of a Superbowl hangover.   I think this division will get at least 2 playoff teams but I do not know which teams as of yet.

  1.  Kansas City Chiefs – Vegas Win Total – 11.5 juiced to the over -145 so its 11.8

Schedule – Medium hard – At large vs Baltimore and Houston

Key losses: CB Kendall Fuller, DE Emmanuel Ogbah, G Stefen Wisniewski, T Cameron Irving, ILB Reggie Ragland, OLB Terrell Suggs, RB Leshawn McCoy

Key additions: RT Mike Remmers

Whom they drafted: RB Clyde Edwards Helaire, LB Willie Gay, OT Lucas Niange

Summary:  You knew that there would be players leaving this team after their amazing 2019 year but they also lost some big names last year and it really didn’t matter.  This could be a dynasty in the making with young Patrick Mahomes.   In saying that, I really feel that this team was still sleeping when it came to draft day.  I thought they could have gotten a great edge rusher at the 32nd position when only 1 or 2 at the time were off of the board.  I also don’t know what they see in Edwards-Helaire as an NFL first round talent.   He ran a 4.6 40 and was a product of an amazing system.   Oh well, the core of this team is still together and I really don’t want to mess with Mahomes even though they have to go to Baltimore, Buffalo and New Orleans.  All away games.   Plus I expect this team to drop a home game and lose one on the road to divisional rivals.  Let’s see if there will be some sort of a Superbowl hangover for 2020 and if there is, I have this team at 10.3 wins

Action – small lean to the under.

2.  Denver Broncos – Vegas Season Win total – 7.5 juiced to the over -130 so 7.7

Schedule – Hard – At large games vs Pittsburgh and Tennessee

Key losses: C Conner McGovern, CB Chris Harris

Key additions:  RB Melvin Gordon, TE Nick Vannett, DT Christian Covington, S Will Parks,

Whom they drafted: WR Jerry Jeudy, WR KJ Hamler, CB Michael Ojemudia, C Lloyd Cushenberry (from LSU)

Summary:  This team really didn’t lose much in free agency and I feel that they also didn’t gain much either.   I really like their draft, and that is rare for me, because they went with two wide receivers in the first round but still got a great center in Lloyd Cushenberry from LSU in the fourth.   I also love the fact that they signed Melvin Gordon and he will add some swag to this backfield.   Melvin will also most definitely have a chip on his shoulder when he plays the Chargers to prepare your fantasy teams for that.   My big problem with the outlook of this team is the schedule being so hard with the Raiders improving and having to play the NFC South.  Let’s face it, the big question for me is how well Drew Lock will play this year.  He finished out the season well last year which is a good thing in my mind.   I think 7 or 8 wins with an upside of 9 is fair.

Action – No Play

3.  Las Vegas Raiders – Vegas Win Total – 7.5 juiced to the over -125 so 7.65

Schedule – Hard – Cleveland and Indianapolis

Key losses: OLB Vontez Burfict, DE Benson Mayowa, CB Daryl Worley, LB Tahir Whitehead, SS Karl Joseph

Key additions: CB Prince Amukamara, WR Nelson Agholor, ILB Corey Littleton, DE Karl Nassib, ILB Nick Kwaitkowski, QB Marcus Marriota, SS Jeff Heath, DT Malik Collins, TE Jason Witton, FS Demarious Randall,

Whom they drafted: WR Henry Ruggs, CB Damon Arnette and a bunch of head scratchers

Summary:  Chuckie and the Las Vegas Raiders once again made a ton of moves in the off-season.   I really like the aggressiveness that this team showed in free agency and whom they picked up.  What I didn’t like was their draft.  Henry Ruggs is a number 2 wide-out ype in my opinion, and I am not sure what he will do with a safety over the top ready to hit him when the ball comes into his hands.  I also do not think that Hunter Renfrow or Nelson Agholor is a number one type wide receiver either.   Derek Carr has showed me that he is a capable quarterback and can play well enough at times to win games as long as their defense shows up.   The Raiders focused a ton on their defense this year and I think it will pay dividends.  Their new Stadium is just about done in Las Vegas and it would be a shame to not have any fans in it.  At the same time, I am not sure how many opposing fans were going to come to Las Vegas anyways to see their own team play when on vacation.   The big problem with their season win total is that the Raiders have the 4th hardest schedule this year with tough at large games vs Cleveland and Indianapolis.   I have their wins at 7.1

Action – Lean Under

4.  Los Angeles Chargers – Vegas Win Total – 8

Schedule – Easy – At large vs Jacksonville and Cincinnati

Key additions: OT Bryan Bulaga, DT Linval Joseph, CB Chris Harris, OLB Nick Vigil

Key losses: QB Phillip Rivers, RB Melvin Gordon, FB Derek Watt, FS Adrian Phillips, LB Thomas Davis

Whom they drafted: QB Justin Herbert, LB Kenneth Murray, WR KJ Hill

Summery:  Losing Phillip Rivers and Melvin Gordon is the elephant in the room here but I do like some of the additions that this team has picked up in Linval Joseph, Chris Harris and Nick Vigil.   In saying that I do not understand this win total at 8 playing in this tough division with Tyrod Taylor at the helm here.   Losing a QB like Phillip Rivers spells major transition to me and without the reps that this team needs with a new quarterback in the off-season due to Covid-19, I can’t see this team being in sync until late in the season.  The chargers have two things going for them.  Number one is that they have a great at large schedule vs Jacksonville and Cincinnati.   Number two is that their Pythagorean win total was at 7.8 compared to having only 5 wins last year.   In saying that, It is still is large downgrade from Rivers to Taylor and I think it is about 4 points in the power ratings and probably about two wins.   I have the Chargers at 5.4 wins this year and will most definitely play the under 8.

NFC East 2020 Season Win Totals

The NFC East:  How bout dem Caywboyz?  This division plays the NFC West and the AFC North which I would call a Medium.   The Bengals still have a huge uphill climb, the Browns are the Browns and the Steelers have regressed a bit.  The NFC West is obviously hard with their lowest win total at 7.5 for the Cardinals.   This was clearly the worst division in football last year and one must assume that just one team comes out into the playoffs again.  The big question for me is if this is the year that Dak Prescott proves his worth.

1.  Philadelphia Eagles – Vegas win total 9.5 juiced to the over -125

Schedule – Medium – At large games vs Green Bay and New Orleans

Key losses:  G Halapoulivaati Vaitai, FS Malcomb Jenkins, RB Jordan Howard, CB Ronald Darby, WR Nelson Agholor, OLB Kamu Grugier-Hill, QB Josh McCown, LT Jason Peters???

Key additions: DT Javon Hargrave, S Will Parks, CB Nickell Robey-Coleman,

Whom they drafted: WR Jalen Raegar, QB Jalen Hurts, CB K’Von Wallace, OT Jack Driscoll

Summary:  This Eagles team really lost a lot in my opinion and their draft was really a head-scratcher.   After the Cowboys cock-blocked them by drafting Cee Dee Lamb, they went with a guy projected to go late second early third in Jalen Raegar.   The Eagles really needed defense and offensive line depth but instead they went with a QB project in Jalen Hurts for their second round pick.   I do understand the play because of an injury prone Carson Wentz, but it sure didn’t help fill some much needed holes in the secondary and the Offensive line.   Their at large games are obviously tough, but it is worse to me that they play the tougher of those teams in the Saints at home and then have to go to Green Bay.  I usually like it more when the easier team is at home because then you have a shot at winning at least 1 game and may get lucky on the other.  This Eagles team has lost a lot in my opinion and I have them at 7.4 wins for 2020.

Action – Under 9.5 wins – 2 star premium shared

2.  Dallas Cowboys – Vegas win total 9.5 juiced to the over -145 so 9.85 is the real number

Schedule: Medium Easy – At large games vs Minnesota and Atlanta

Key losses: Coach Jason Garrett CB Byron Jones, OLB Robert Quinn, DT Maliek Collins, WR Randall Cobb, SS Jeff Heath, TE Jason Witten, WR Tavon Austin

Key additions: Coach Mike McCarthey, DT Gerald McCoy, K Greg Zuerline, FS Haha Clinton Dix, QB Andy Dalton, CB Daryl Worthy, T Cameron Irving,

Whom they drafted: WR CeeDee Lamb, CB Travon Diggs, DL Neville Gallimore, C/G Tyler Biadasz

Summary:  Big D made a ton of moves this year and one of them was their coach.   Jerry Jones used to defend Jason Garrett like he was his only son, but he finally had to move on and hire another coach who will also due his bidding in Michael McCarthy.   I am actually not quite sure if it is much of an upgrade.   Ask any Packer fan and they would say that it sure isn’t.  One thing that this team did is revamp a ton of positions here, but what I am most concerned about is if Dak Prescott can put together a full football game instead of just a great second half.  I am also questioning the fact that they really didn’t address their pass rush after losing Robert Quinn.   Dallas decided to be flashy instead by drafting Ceedee Lamb instead of trading down and taking an Edge and a skill position later.  One big thing that sticks out to me is that Dallas’s Pythagorean wins last year was 10.9 compared to the 8 actual wins that they had.   I think that even though Dallas could have done better in the off-season, I still have them slated to win the division and most likely exceed their win total by achieving at least 10 wins.   Dallas has a great at large set up at Minnesota and home against Atlanta. This is a contract year for Dak and I expect a very good performance on both sides of the ball.

Action: No Play

3. New York Giants – Vegas Win total is 6.5 juiced to the under -130

Schedule – Hard – At large vs Tampa Bay and Chicago

Key losses: WR Cody Lattimer, DT Michael Thomas, LB Alec Ogletree, FS Antoine Bethea

Key additions: CB James Bradbury, ILB Blake Martinez, LB Kyler Fackrel, LB Levine Toilolo, FS Nate Ebner, RB Dion Lewis, DT Austin Johnson and a lot more

Whom they drafted: T Andrew Thomas, S Xavier McKinney,

Summary:  This Giants team is looking to improve on those 4 wins from last year and it looks like a pretty large rebuild.   The Giants had a terrible defense last year and suffered some key injuries to guys like Evan Engram, Golden Tate and Saquon Barkley.  The major moves start right in the defense with a few linebackers picked up from Green Bay and a bunch of other average Joes from other teams.   Nothing too exciting for me and I couldn’t give them a huge bump for free agency.   I do like 2 of their draft picks but if it will be enough to make much of a difference remains to be seen.   Unfortunately, for this Giants team, they get difficult at large opponents hosting Tampa Bay at home and going to Chicago.   This could be another rough year for the G-men!   Their schedule ranks second hardest in football and I think that I am being pretty generous giving them 5.7 wins.

Action – No Play

4.  Washington Redskins – Vegas Win total is 5.5 juiced to the under -130

Schedule – Medium Hard – At large vs Detroit and Carolina

Key losses: G Ereck Flowers, QB Case Keenum, CB Josh Norman

Key additions: CB Kendall Fuller, G Wes Schweitzer, FS Sean Davis, CB Ronald Darby, RB Peyton Barber, ILB Kevin Pierre-Lewis

Whom they drafted: Edge Chase Young, and a bunch of garbage

Summary:   I am very concerned that the past success of Dwayne Haskins is just a product of Ohio State football schemes and playbook rather than any translation to the NFL level.   We have seen the same thing in the past from Ohio State with Cardale Jones, Braxton Miller, and JT Barrett.   The good news is that they may have secured the best player in the draft in Chase Young, but that certainly isn’t enough to turn this team around.   Washington went with a running back with their next pick which was a big head-scratcher to me.   The Redskins didn’t lose much in the off-season but they also didn’t have much to lose anyways.   Their key additions doesn’t exactly light up the board either.   The Redskins had a lower Pythagorean total than even the Bengals and I do not expect much improvement this year.   If there is any good news it is that their at large games look to be pretty easy.  Looking at the additions to this team I can’t see how they get 6 wins this year and my number is 3.9

Action – Under 5.5 wins

NFC West 2020 Season Win Totals

The NFC West has to play the AFC East and the NFC East which is actually very good minus the travel.   Some of these teams have asked the NFL to schedule the East Coast games back to back in order to stay there the full week before the next game.  Let’s look at the opponents.  In the NFC East the Giants and Redskins have been garbage, the Eagles are trending down.  In the AFC East, the Patriots have taking a huge step back without Brady and the Dolphins and Jets are still a bunch of meh.  Within the NFC West division, the Cardinals are supposed to be better, the Seahawks and Rams are playoff contenders as usual, and the 49ers made the Superbowl.   If it wasn’t for the travel this conference would have it pretty easy this year so I think it is Medium Easy in general.

1.  San Francisco 49ers – Total wins 10.5 juiced to the over -125

Schedule – Medium – At large games vs Green Bay and New Orleans

Key losses: WR Emmanuel Sanders, RB Matt Breida, TE Livine Toilolo, DT Shelton Day

Key additions: G Tom Compton (straight out of Compton) DE Kerry Hyder, WR Travis Bengamin

Whom they drafted:  DL Javon Kinlaw, WR Brandon Aiyuk

Summary:  Well the Superbowl sure ended strangely for this team.   It looked like Kyle Shanahan didn’t have a ton of confidence in Jimmy Garoppolo and you have to wonder if it filters into this season.  The good news is that the schedule is only medium in difficulty which is strange for a superbowl team and it is due to the fact that the AFC East and NFC East opponents are not projected to be that good this year in general.  The beginning of 49ers schedule is interesting with the second game at the Jets then Giants the week after and I have to assume that this team will stay on the East coast through those 2 weeks.  This team really didn’t really gain much with such a light draft but I have to punish them slightly for losing losing Matt Breida, Emmanual Sanders and Shelton Day.  My number is 11.75 so no play but a small lean to the over.

Action:  Lean over

2. Seattle Seahawks – Win Total 9 juiced to the over -140

Schedule – Medium – At large vs Minnesota and Dallas

Key losses: T George Fant, DT Quinton Jefferson, G DJ Fluker, DE Jadeveon Clowney

Key additions: T Brandon Shell, C BJ Finney, TE Greg Olsen, DE Bruce Irvin, T Cedrick Ogbuehi

Whom they drafted: LB Jordyn Brooks, Edge Darrell Taylor, G/C Damien Lewis

Summary:  Here we go again with the immensely over-achieving Russel Wilson led Seahawks.   This team also did a lot of robbing Pto pay Paul in the off-season but the good news is that they revamped their offensive line and maybe, just maybe, their blocking will be improved for 2020.  Pro Football Focus ranked their offensive line at only 27 last year.  Their schedule is ranked medium but their are a bunch of long distance trips to Atlanta, Miami, Buffalo and Washington.   I like DK Metcalf and Tyler Locket a ton and if Will Disley and Greg Olson stays healthy, then I expect Seattle to once again compete for the NFC West.  My number is actually 9.35 so it lines right up with the Vegas expectation.

Action – No Play

3. LA RAMS – Win total 8.5 juiced to the under -125

Schedule: Medium Hard – At large games vs Chicago and NY Giants

Key losses:  RB Todd Gurley, DE Dante Fowler, LB Corey Littleton, K Greg Zuerline, CB Nickell Robey-Coleman, OLB Clay Matthews, QB Blake Bortles

Key additions: DT A’Shawn Robinson, OLB Leonard Floyd

Whom they drafted: RB Cam Akers, WR Van Jefferson, Edge Terrell Lewis

Summary:  This Rams team has had it very difficult since losing their superbowl.   They had the hardest schedule last year according to efficiency and now they have a medium-hard schedule mostly due to the successes of the Seahawks and the 49ers.   The Rams have lost a TON in free agency.  The Todd Gurley situation was weird with this team but he gone.   This team also shed Clay Matthews, Dante Fowler, Corey Littleton and Legatron Greg Zuerline.   The concern that I have for the Rams is that they kinda cheaped out on edge rusher by signing Leonard Floyd who was a bust on the bears and they waited until the 3rd round to grab one in the draft.   Floyd is a guy who looks like Tarzan but thinks like the Tiger King.  He isn’t too bright.  LA is also a little weak on the secondary behind Jalen Ramsey and didn’t address their needs well in the off-season.  My number on team wins is 7.9 so no play

Action – No Play

4.  Arizona Cardinals – Win Total 7.5

Schedule – Medium – At large games vs Detroit and Washington

Key losses: RB David Johnson (but he didn’t do much), DE Rodney Gunter, TE Charles Clay

Key additions: WR Deandre Hopkins, DE Jordan Phillips, OLB Devon Kennard, OLB Devondre Campbell,

Whom they drafted: LB Isaiah Simmons, T Josh Jones, DT Leki Fotu, LB Evan Weaver

Summary:  Ok, I was a little wrong on Kyler Murray last year but not wrong enough where we lost our under 6 wins season win total on them.   Thank goodness they didn’t beat the Lions, and instead, tied them so I had to adjust for that.   I really love what this team did in the off-season.   They stole D’Andre Hopkins from the Texans and didn’t even have to give up their best RB in Kenyon Drake.   Johnson was pretty good but very injury prone and his contract was huge.   I also like how they fixed a lot about their defense by getting Jordan Phillips and D’Vondre Campbell.   Wow, this could the most improved team in the league.  The only problem that I have is that they really didn’t address their bad offensive line minus drafting a reach with Tackle Josh Jones from Houston in the third round.  The good news is that Kyler Murray can operate very well out of the pocket.   I have their wins at 8.1 so no play at 7.5.   I personally think the best play in this division is the Cardinals winning the division at +600 or better.   San Francisco will have a hard schedule and their QB Jimmy G has shown some weaknesses and there might be a trust problem.  The Seahawks and the Rams win totals are very close to the Cardinals anyway so it’s not that far fetched.

Action – Lean over 7.5 wins but take Arizona +600 to win the NFC West for a 3/4 unit

NFC South 2020 Season Win Totals

NFC South has a medium hard schedule.  This division has had a lot of ups and downs last year and the the 2020 schedule doesn’t look easy.  They have to play the NFC North who is pretty good and they also have to play the AFC West which has an up and coming Raiders and Broncos team.  Don’t forget  the Superbowl Champ Kansas City Chiefs.  The most interesting thing to watch will be how Tom Brady does with the Tampa bay Buccaneers because the hype factor on this team is literally through the roof.

1. New Orleans Saints – Vegas Win Total 10.5

Schedule:  Medium Hard – at large games vs the 49ers and the Packers

Key Losses:  QB Teddy Bridgewater, SS Vonn Bell, OLB AJ Klein

Key additions: QB Jameis Winston, FS Malcom Jenkins, WR Emmanuel Sanders,

Whom they drafted: C/G Caesar Ruiz, LB Zach Baun

Summary:  Not a lot of draft picks here.   The Saints did retain a lot of talent but I am concerned a little about their secondary getting older and losing Vonn Bell.   That might be the only weakness minus Drew Brees’s age.   I really like the Jameis Winston pickup because if anyone could help pry his head out of his ass, it’s Sean Peyton.  The Saints have always been overachievers until they hit the playoffs.  Their Pythagorean win total was only 10.9 compared to their 13 wins.   They really didn’t do a ton in free agency and I do like Emmanuel Sanders but he is just going to kinda replace Ted Ginn.   I have the Saints at 11.5 wins this year.

Action:  lean over

2. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Win total at 9.5 juiced to the over (-140) so actually 9.8

Schedule: – Medium – At large games vs the Bears and the Rams

Key losses: DE Carl Nassib, DT Beau Allen, QB Jameis Winston, RB Peyton Barber

Key additions: QB Tom Brady, T Joe Haeg,

Whom they drafted: T Tristan Wirfs, S Antoine Winfield, WR Tyler Johnson, DL Khalil Davis

Summary:  Obviously landing Tom Brady is the biggest thing that Tampa has ever done in free agency, but at the same time, Jameis Winston wasn’t all that bad.   He threw for over 5100 yards last year and part of the reason that he had 30 interceptions was due to the fact that their secondary was so bad last year and the Bucs had to play catch-up.   My biggest worry here is that they really didn’t try to fix their secondary in free agency or the draft so I have to wonder if Tom Brady is going to be throwing the ball 40-50 times per game.   Being that this team gained Brady, I have to award them 2 more wins over Winston in this medium schedule.   The rest of the gains and losses are really a wash in my opinion but this only brings this team to 9.6 wins which is close to their win total.

3.  Atlanta Falcons – Win total is 7.5 juiced to the over (-130)

Schedule:  Hard – Atlanta plays the Seahawks and the Cowboys for at large.  Not really easy.

Key losses: TE Austin Hooper, Edge Vic Beasley, G Wes Schweitzer, CB Desmond Trufant, OLB Devondre Campbell, RB Devonte Freeman

Key additions: RB Todd Gurley, DE Dante Fowler, G Justin McCray, TE Hayden Hurst

Whom they drafted: CB AJ Terrell, DL Marlon Davidson, LB MyCal Walker

Summary:    This team somehow eked out 7 wins last year while having a tough schedule.   They started out 1-7 and somehow won their last 4 games in a row including at San Francisco.   Well this year the schedule is even worse ranking the hardest in the league and they strangely start out the season with both of their at large games vs Seattle and week 2 at Dallas.   The Seahawks were actually pretty healthy most of the year but they lost a ton of their talent.   They replaced TE Austin Hooper with Hayden Hurst who hasn’t proved anything yet in the league.  Theyalso  didn’t resign Devonte Freeman and replaced him with an ailing Todd Gurley who has been very mysterious.   The F alcons lost some top 5 guys on their team defense in Devondre Campbell, Desmond Trufant and Vic Beasley.   I had to punish this team 2 full games with what they lost and I only gave them back .5 for free agency and draft.   I am liking the under 7.5 for plus money

Action:  Under 7.5 +110

4.  Carolina Panthers – Win total is 5.5

Schedule: Medium Hard – At large games vs the Cardinals and the Redskins.

Key losses: Coach Riverboat Ron Rivera, CB James Bradberry, DE Mario Addison, DT Gerald McCoy, DT Vernon Butler, TE Greg Olsen, DE Bruce Irvin, G Tre Turner, QB Cam Newton isn’t a key loss to the numbers being that he didn’t play much.

Key additions: Coach Matt Rhule and Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady, QB Teddy Bridgewater, WR Robby Anderson, WR Stephon Weatherly, T Russell Okung

Whom they drafted: DL Derrick Brown, Edge Yatur Gross-Matos, S Jeremy Chinn, CB Troy Pride

Summary: Carolina was very injured last year and it all started with Cam Newton and his issues with his Foot this year and it seems he regressed anyway due to his ankles, shoulder and back.  I can’t give back for that injury as he won’t be the starting QB this year for the Panthers.   From what it looks like, the Panthers started their rebuild by drafting a ton of defense and shedding some big contracts.   The thing that I love for the future of this team is obviously the hire of Coach Matt Rhule from Baylor and OC Joe Brady from LSU.   WOW.  If you are a Panther fan you have to be excited for the future with these two guys.  Carolina had the second hardest schedule last year and they have a medium hard one this year.   In saying that, I think that it is actually possible to win some games if Teddy Bridgewater plays well.   We actually saw some great games from this team last year until they got extremely injured in the middle of the season.   We also have to remember that they still have Christian McCaffrey and DJ Moore as weapons.   This team could surprise some people and I am leaning over and would take it if it wasn’t for such a hard schedule.

NFC North 2020 Season Win Totals

NFC NORTH: This conference has to play the NFC South and the AFC South.   This won’t be easy when looking at the teams in the NFC South and at the fact that New Orleans is a force and Tampa Bay has really improved now with Brady.   The AFC South had 2 playoff teams last year and the Colts are looking to get back to what they were 2 years ago.

1. Green Bay Packers Win Total 9

Schedule: Medium – At large games vs the Eagles and 49ers

Key Losses:  OT Bryan Bulaga, ILB Blake Martinez, OLB Kyler Fackrell, TE Jimmy Graham

Key additions: LB Christian Kirksey, OT Ricky Wagner, WR Devin Funchess

Whom they drafted: QB Jordan Love, RB AJ Dillon, IOL Jake Hansen, OT Jon Runyan

Summary:   This team has a 3 game difference in their Pythagorean win total from last year and that really worries me.   The good news is that they didn’t lose too much production from last year.   The Packers once again whiffed on this draft by not getting Rodgers more wide receiver weapons and also ignored their D-Line issues after San Francisco exposed them.   It is quite obvious to me that Matt Lefleur is trying to emulate the Ravens power offense by getting another running back and a running quarterback in the draft.   Aaron Rodger’s may not be happy this year and I don’t know what to expect out of him.   I have their wins at 9.9 so it looks close to a play but I just can’t do it under these circumstances.

Action: No Play

2. Minnesota Vikings – Win Total 9

Schedule: Medium Hard – At large games vs the Cowboys and Seahawks

Key Losses: DT Linvil Joseph, CB Tre Wayans,  DE Stephan Weatherly, DE Everson Griffen S Andrew Sendejo, CB Xavier Rhodes,  WR Stefon Diggs.

Key Additions: DT Michael Pierce, G Josh Kline, DT Shamar Stephen

Whom they drafted: WR Justin Jefferson, CB Jeff Gladney, T Ezra Cleveland, CB Cameron Dantzler and a ton of other dudes

The Vikings have gotten a lot younger this year.  They shed a ton of players but these players were also very good and I am not sure that having 15 picks can make up for them all.   Stefon Diggs was a very big threat all defenses and Justin Jefferson will have to learn the position quickly.  The Vikings were pretty healthy in general last year.  My biggest worry is Kurt Cousins with the fact is that he could never play well out of his 1pm Eastern time slots.   The Vikings should get their share of prime-time games this year.   Minnesota will have a pretty hard schedule this year getting the Cowboys at home and having to travel to Seattle.   They did over-achieve a bit last year but I certainly cannot bet the over and lean under the 9.   My total is 8.7

3. Chicago Bears – Vegas Win Total 8

Schedule: Medium Hard – At large games vs the the Rams and the Giants

Key Losses:  QB Chase Daniel, ILB Nick Kwiatkowski, OLB Leonard Floyd, NT Nick Williams, FS Ha Ha Clinton Dix

Key Additions:   QB Nick Foles, OLB Robert Quinn, TE Jimmy Graham, S Deon Bush, LB Martavious Mingo, WR Ted Ginn Jr

Whom they drafted: TE Cole Kmet, CB Jalen Johnson, WR Darnell Mooney

Summary: This Bears team really underachieved last year and it all started with their first game of the season home loss vs the Packers.   They eventually rebounded back to .500 and could have been fine during the regular season had they not had the awful losses vs the Raiders and Chargers.  I had to punish them a half game for barely beating the Vikings second string the last game of the season last year to get to 8 wins.  The Bears had some  bad injuries last year which helped contribute to their downfall with Hicks, Trubisky and Mack all missing some time, but they had decent backup options that filled in just fine.  The obvious reason for the Bears demise was poor quarterback and offensive line play.  Chicago could not establish a run to open up the pass.  Their schedule last year was pretty hard ranking 7th last year against team efficiency and this year it looks medium easy only ranking 6th hardest in the league.  You have to think that at least this year, the presence of Nick Foles will improve the QB position whether he starts or makes Mitch a better player.  Khalil Mack is due for a big year after a disappointing 2019

Action – Lean over – I have the Bears wins at 9.5 if QB play improves

4. Detroit Lions – Win Total – 6.5

Schedule: – Medium Easy – At large games vs the Cardinals and the Redskins

Key losses: G Graham Glasgow, OLB Devin Kennard, DT Ashawn Robinson

Key additions:  G Halapaulivaati Vaitai, LB Jaime Collins, CB Desmond Trufant, DT Nick Williams

Whom they drafted: CB Jeffrey Okudah, RB DeAndre Swift, Edge Julian Okwara, WR Quintez Cephus

Summary:  The Lions did a lot of robbing Peter to pay Paul in the off-season but I do like their draft a lot.   there was a huge Pythagorean discrepancy with them showing that they should have won 6 games instead of 3.   Matt Stafford only played half of the season so I had to make a big injury accommodation to my win total numbers.  Let’s look at the adjustments made in the off-season.  This Lions team was flat out worst at opponent passing yards per game and they went and paid for Desmond Trufant and then drafted Jeffrey Okudah.   Adding Jaimie Collins from NE and drafting Julian Okwara should help them get a few sacks.   Is this finally the year that Matt Stafford puts it all together?  I have their wins at 7.75 so this looks like a small play.

Action: Over 6.5 wins
