Prediction:
The Guardians have the better record, but I think that the home dog is barking today. The Reds have scored more runs this season at 208 compared to the Guardians at 176. Looking at the Pitching, the ERA doesn’t tell the whole story. Tanner Bibee has a FIP of 5.52 while Brady Singer is at 4.25 respectively. Cincinnati has the better on base percentage as well as batting average. The strength of schedule isn’t factored in well either. I think the Reds win this one.

2025 Preakness Preview & Picks
The 150th running of the Preakness Stakes is set for Saturday, May 17th, continuing a rich tradition as the second jewel of the Triple Crown. Held two weeks after the Kentucky Derby, the race takes place at historic Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland. First run in 1873 and named after the colt Preakness, a winner of the 1870 Dinner Party Stakes, the race covers 1 3/16 miles on dirt, making it the shortest leg of the Triple Crown and often one of the most tactical.
Over the decades, the Preakness has delivered some of horse racing’s most unforgettable moments. Legends like Secretariat (1973), who still holds the stakes record time of 1:53, and Triple Crown champions Seattle Slew and Affirmed added to their legacies at Pimlico. In more recent history, American Pharoah (2015) and Justify (2018) captured the Preakness en route to breaking long Triple Crown droughts. The race has also featured dramatic upsets and historic wins, including Rachel Alexandra’s groundbreaking victory in 2009 as the first filly in 85 years to take the Preakness, and Swiss Skydiver’s thrilling duel with Authentic in 2020.
Tradition plays a big role at the Preakness. The winning horse is draped in a blanket of black-eyed Susans, Maryland’s state flower (although look-alike blooms are used due to the actual flower’s later bloom time), and the infield—known as “Old Hilltop”—has long been a hub of fanfare and celebration. While the traditional singing of “Maryland, My Maryland” has been retired in recent years, the race’s historic charm remains intact.
One of the key storylines heading into the 2025 Preakness Stakes is the decision by Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty to skip the race in favor of preparing for the Belmont Stakes. With his absence, the Triple Crown is officially off the table this year. In his place, attention turns to Journalism, the Derby favorite who finished a strong second at Churchill Downs and returns as the morning-line favorite at Pimlico. Just two horses in the Preakness field—American Promise and Sandman—are making the start off the Derby trail, both looking to rebound in Baltimore. A noteworthy recent trend adds intrigue: six of the last eight Preakness winners bypassed the Kentucky Derby, potentially giving an edge to the fresher contenders in this year’s lineup.

The forecast for Saturday’s 150th running of the Preakness Stakes has improved as of Thursday, with the National Weather Service now calling for better conditions and only lingering showers following what’s expected to be an active weather day on Friday.
This updated outlook increases the likelihood that the race could be run over a fast track, but much will depend on the timing and path of any thunderstorms moving through the region late Friday and potentially into Saturday. Whether the dirt and turf courses at Pimlico have time to fully dry out remains the key factor heading into race day.

Clever Again is a lightly raced colt with a strong upward trajectory. He debuted in April 2024 at Keeneland, narrowly missing by a head in a $79K maiden sprint. After a lengthy layoff, he returned in February with an impressive win in a $110K maiden special weight at Oaklawn Park, cruising home by more than three lengths over 1 1/16 miles. He followed that up with a dominant wire-to-wire victory in the Hot Springs Stakes, winning by four lengths over a mile and earning a 101 speed figure—just shy of the 20-year average winning figure for the Preakness (104).
A son of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah, Clever Again should have no trouble handling the Preakness distance, and the relatively soft field gives him a strong opportunity to shine. He’s trained by Steve Asmussen, who has won the Preakness twice and knows how to have his horses ready for this stage. With the right trip, Clever Again has a legitimate shot to take home the second jewel of the Triple Crown.
Longshot Win Bets
#9 Gosger
Gosger enters the Preakness as a lightly raced but intriguing longshot, coming off an impressive Grade 3 victory in the Lexington Stakes at Keeneland, where he drew off to win by two lengths over 1 1/16 miles. While his speed figure of 87 in that effort will need to improve to contend against this stronger field, there’s reason to believe he has plenty of upside with just three career starts under his belt. The distance shouldn’t pose a problem given his recent performance and pedigree, and a sharp bullet workout on May 10th adds to the optimism. If he takes another step forward, Gosger could be a sneaky player at a big price.

2025 PGA Championship Preview & Picks
Sepp Straka won the Truist Championship last week at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, becoming the second player to win twice on the PGA TOUR this season, joining Rory McIlroy. Our pick, Shane Lowry (35-1), was tied for the lead after 54 holes but couldn’t close the deal and finished as the runner-up.
The second major of the season heads to Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina—a course well-acquainted with championship-caliber golf. Quail Hollow previously hosted the 2017 PGA Championship and more recently staged the 2022 Presidents Cup, showcasing its ability to challenge the world’s best. Famous for its difficult finishing stretch known as “The Green Mile,” the course demands precision and poise from tee to green. While this marks just the second time it will host a major, Quail Hollow’s long-standing role as host of the Truist Championship (formerly the Wells Fargo Championship) has solidified its reputation as one of the premier stops on the PGA TOUR.
Now, let’s dive into the storylines ahead of this week’s PGA Championship…
Pre-Tournament Storylines:
Rory Returns to a Favorite Venue
Rory McIlroy has had an outstanding season, winning three times on the PGA TOUR, including his victory at the Masters to complete his career Grand Slam. He’s also a two-time PGA Championship winner, having claimed the title in 2012 at Kiawah Island Golf Resort (Ocean Course) and in 2014 at Valhalla Golf Club. McIlroy is highly familiar with this year’s venue, Quail Hollow Club, having won the Truist Championship (formerly the Wells Fargo Championship) four times (2024, 2021, 2015, and 2010).
Xander Looks to Defend His Crown
Xander Schauffele is the defending PGA Championship winner, having captured his first Major Championship at Valhalla Golf Club last year. He went on to win the Open Championship later in the same season at Royal Troon. Schauffele faced a rib injury earlier this year that sidelined him for several months. Despite only playing seven times this season, he’s regained form with four consecutive top-20 finishes. Schauffele also has strong course history at Quail Hollow, finishing runner-up in the 2023 and 2024 Wells Fargo Championships.
Scheffler Heating Up at the Right Time
Scottie Scheffler, who also dealt with an injury earlier this season, is coming off his first win of the year at the CJ CUP Byron Nelson. Scheffler has played in five previous PGA Championships, finishing in the top 10 in four of those appearances, with his only miss being in 2022 at Southern Hills Country Club. This will be his first appearance at Quail Hollow Country Club.
Thomas Eyes Third PGA Title at Familiar Site
ustin Thomas won the PGA Championship when it was last hosted at Quail Hollow Club in 2017, capturing his first Major Championship. Since then, he’s won just one other Major, the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills Country Club. Thomas has been playing well this season, with three runner-up finishes at the American Express, Valspar Championship, and last week at the Truist Championship. He also claimed his first win since 2022 at the RBC Heritage two weeks ago. In his last two trips to Quail Hollow, Thomas finished T14 in the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship and T21 in the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship.
Jordan Spieth Aims to Complete the Career Grand Slam at Quail Hollow
Jordan Spieth is once again chasing history this week, as he looks to become just the seventh player in golf history to complete the career Grand Slam. The 30-year-old already owns three major titles: the 2015 Masters, 2015 U.S. Open, and 2017 Open Championship.
The PGA Championship is the final piece missing from Spieth’s resume. He came closest in 2015, finishing runner-up to Jason Day at Whistling Straits. When Quail Hollow last hosted the PGA in 2017, Spieth finished T28.
This season, Spieth has shown flashes of form with six top 20 finishes in 11 starts.
Koepka, Bryson, and Phil Lead LIV Charge at Quail Hollow
There will be a total of 16 LIV TOUR players competing in this week’s PGA Championship. Eight of these players qualified, while seven received special invitations from the PGA of America. The special invitees are Dustin Johnson, Tom McKibbin, David Puig, Joaquin Niemann, Sergio Garcia, Patrick Reed, and John Catlin.

Block Headlines Club Pro Spotlight
Michael Block will headline the group of 20 PGA Professional champions in the field this week. He made headlines in the 2023 PGA Championship at Oak Hill, where he finished T15. Afterward, he received sponsor exemptions to play in several PGA TOUR events in 2023 and 2024 but missed the cut in all of those tournaments. Block also participated in the 2024 PGA Championship but missed the cut at Valhalla Golf Club.
The 1916 PGA Championship included club professionals alongside touring pros, a tradition that continues today. The first event featured lesser-known pros like Robert White, the PGA’s first president, who competed at Siwanoy, setting the stage for the 20 club pro spots in modern fields.
Quail Hollow: A Major-Tested Host Returns
Quail Hollow Club has been the host of the Wells Fargo Championship (currently the Truist Championship) since 2003, with a few exceptions. The course was not used for this event in 2017 when it hosted its first Major Championship, the PGA Championship, or in 2022 when it hosted the Presidents Cup. Last week, the Truist Championship was played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, a one-time host. The event will return to Quail Hollow Club next year.

Originally designed by George W. Cobb in 1961 and later modernized by Tom Fazio, Quail Hollow Club blends Southern elegance with modern championship grit. Cobb’s original routing showcased the natural contours of the North Carolina landscape, while Fazio’s updates—particularly ahead of the 2017 PGA Championship and more recently—brought the course up to major championship standards without compromising its character.
The layout at Quail Hollow is a Par 71, consisting of four Par 3s, eleven Par 4s, and three Par 5s, demanding a complete range of shot-making and strategic thinking. During the PGA TOUR’s last visit for the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, the course played at 7,558 yards. For the 2025 PGA Championship, the course has been extended by approximately 70 yards, bringing the total length to about 7,630 yards. Notable changes include the 9th hole being lengthened by 25 yards, the 17th hole by 33 yards, and the 1st hole by 10 yards.
Quail Hollow rewards bold, decisive play—but the margin for error is razor-thin. Narrow fairways, penal run-offs, fast, contoured greens, and one of the most demanding finishing stretches in golf—the Green Mile (holes 16–18)—ensure that only the most composed and complete players survive the test.
The four Par 3’s range between 184 yards and 249 yards. At the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, all of the Par 3’s had a scoring average over par. Hole No. 17 was the toughest hole on the entire course with a scoring average of +0.309 over par.
Hole 4 – 184 Yards
This par-3 is beautifully framed by a group of tall pines, while the large, undulating green is framed by three front bunkers. Shots over the green will finish below the surface, leaving a tricky up and down.
Hole 6 – 249 Yards
The longest par 3 on the course plays downhill to a large green with a false front that can reject good shots and mess with attempts at recovery. But going long is no picnic, as the green is severely sloped from back to front with run-off areas and a deep bunker behind.
Hole 13 – 205 Yards
The test on this long par 3 will be hitting the tee shot deep enough into the green to carry the severe false front and a closely mown area short right that can leave the player 5 feet below the putting surface. It doesn’t help that the green pitches dramatically from bac to front.
Hole 17 – 223 Yards
The tee shot: All carry over water, water all the way down the left and over the back, and slightly downhill. The bail-out is to the right side, where it is tightly mown and leaves an uphill pitch to a green that slopes away and toward the water. A central ridge running through the green creates front and back sections, with the back half sloping toward the rear.
There are eleven Par 4’s at Quail Hollow with the majority of those holes ranging between 450 and 500 yards. No. 14 is the shortest listed at 344 yards with the longest being No. 9, playing 530 yards. In terms of scoring average, the toughest Par 4 on the course at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship was No. 16 (+0.283).
Hole 1 – 505 Yards
The opening hole, which plays as a long par 4, calls for a left-to-right tee shot to avoid two bunkers down the left side of the fairway. The green is narrow, undulating, and protected by three large bunkers. Certainly, a strong opening hole.
Hole 8 – 346 Yards
It’s possible to drive this short par 4, if the player can avoid two fairway bunkers on the left side of the fairway and a big bunker front-right of the green. The green is shallow and has five distinct sections, requiring a precise shot to get the ball close to the hole.
Hole 16 – 529 Yards
Only one bunker pokes into this fairway, but it’s inside the bend of this dogleg-right and directly in line with a steep hill that likes to kick balls toward the fairway on the left. The approach is downhill to a large, near-peninsula green with one bunker right plus water left and long.
Hole 18 – 494 Yards
This is certainly a challenging finishing hole. The tee shot, which plays downhill, has to find the fairway between a long bunker on the right side and a creek that runs the entire length of the hole, all the way to the green, on the left. The approach comes back slightly uphill to a large green with a big false front, two bunkers right, that the same creek adjacent to the putting surface to the left, ad a ridge across the middle that forms two sections front and back.
There are three Par 5s on the course, No. 7, No. 10, and No. 15. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2024 Wells Fargo Championship. The easiest hole on the course last year was No. 7 with a scoring average of 4.559.
Hole 7 – 546 Yards
Players will be looking for birdie or better on the course’s shortest par 5, a classic risk/reward hole. First, they have to find the narrow fairway, which is sandwiched between bunkers on the left and a creek that runs along the entire right side. Then, they need to challenge the water and two bunkers to find the green.
Hole 10 – 592 Yards
The longest hole on the course favors a right-to-left tee shot as long it avoids the large bunker along the left side of the fairway. Another large bunker sits on the left side about 50 yards short of the green, which is also hemmed in by a big bunker on each side. The closely mown area short right is steep and severe, while the back half of the green slopes away, making it hard to get close to rear hole locations.
Hole 15 – 577 Yards
The best tee shot here will finish on the left side of the fairway, away from bunkers on the right and not too close to the water on the left. The second shot plays uphill toward an array of bunkers: one on the left side of the fairway in the layup zone; two a little further up on the right; and an uncomfortably large one dead-center in the front of the green with closely mown areas on either side. The green itself clops from back to front, with a ridge creating two distinct sections front-left and front-right.

The projected winning score for this year’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow is 273.5. That number has been beaten in four of the last five Wells Fargo Championships held at this course. However, when Quail Hollow last hosted a major — the 2017 PGA Championship — the winning score came in above that mark at 276 (-8).
This week’s setup will be significantly tougher than a standard PGA TOUR event. The course has been lengthened by roughly 70 yards since last year, now tipping out over 7,600 yards, and the rough has been grown an additional inch, making accuracy off the tee even more critical.
The weather is another important factor. Heavy rain is forecasted from Monday through Wednesday, which will soften the course. While softer greens may help approach shots hold the surface, the lack of rollout on tee shots will make the already long layout play even longer. Schauffele broke through in a big way last season, capturing his first two major titles at the PGA Championship and The Open. While he’s consistently performed well in majors dating back to 2022, last year’s victories solidified his status among the game’s elite. Now, he returns to the PGA Championship as the defending champion—and to a course where he’s flourished in recent years.
At Quail Hollow, Schauffele has finished runner-up in each of his last two appearances (2024 and 2023 Wells Fargo Championships). With both major pedigree and proven success at this venue, Xander appears primed to mount a strong title defense.

Justin Thomas has been in excellent form over the past few months. His resurgence began with a runner-up finish at the Valspar Championship, followed by a win at the RBC Heritage, and most recently a T2 at the Truist Championship. That victory was his first since capturing the 2022 PGA Championship at Southern Hills. He also recorded a T9 at the Genesis Invitational, held at Torrey Pines South—a key comp course for Quail Hollow. A major improvement in his putting, long a weakness, has sparked his return to form, along with increased consistency in both iron play and driver accuracy.
A two-time PGA Champion, Thomas has found more success in this major than any other. He won in 2022 at Southern Hills and in 2017 at Quail Hollow—the site of this week’s event.

Viktor Hovland had a shaky start to the 2025 PGA TOUR season, missing the cut in four of his first six starts. Hovland struggled at the Truist Championship, particularly with his putting, but as we’ve seen in the past, he has the ability to turn his game around quickly.
Hovland has posted strong performances in the last two PGA Championships, finishing 3rd at Valhalla in 2024 and T2 at Oak Hill in 2023. At Quail Hollow, his course history is promising, with a T24 finish at the 2024 Wells Fargo Championship, a T43 in 2023, and a T3 in 2021.

Patrick Reed has quietly put together an impressive run of form since the end of March. Tyrrell Hatton (+150) – BetMGM
Tyrrell Hatton enters Quail Hollow in solid form, posting three top-15 finishes in recent starts, including a T14 at the Masters, T5 at LIV Mexico City, and T13 at LIV Korea. He’s gained strokes off the tee and on approach in two of his last three outings—excluding Mexico, where his irons dipped slightly—highlighting a well-rounded game built on strong driving distance and improved ball striking. Hatton’s lone victory this season came on the DP World Tour at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.
His PGA Championship track record has been up and down, though recent years suggest positive momentum. Hatton posted a T15 in 2023 and a T13 in 2022, both driven by solid tee-to-green play. However, his T63 showing last year at Valhalla exposed struggles with his approach game. His career-best finishes at the PGA Championship came in 2016 and 2018, where he placed T10 in each.
Hatton has made four career starts at Quail Hollow. He missed the cut in his debut at the 2017 PGA Championship but showed improvement with a T42 finish at the 2018 Wells Fargo Championship. Most notably, he surged into contention at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship, gaining strokes across all major categories en route to a T3 finish—his best showing at the Charlotte venue and a clear indication that he’s capable of thriving on its demanding layout.

Corey Conners (+180) – DraftKings
Corey Conners began his 2025 season on a high note, finishing T6 at the Nedbank Golf Challenge on the DP World Tour and T5 at The Sentry to open the PGA TOUR calendar. While he hit a brief slump in the following three starts, he quickly regained form at the Genesis Invitational and has been one of the most consistent players on TOUR since. Over his last seven starts, Conners has recorded six top 20 finishes, including four top 10s. He also delivered a strong performance at the Masters, finishing T8, and showed well at comp courses—placing 3rd at Bay Hill Club & Lodge and T24 at Torrey Pines South Course (Genesis Invitational).
Conners’ PGA Championship history has been a mixed bag. He struggled early in his career, finishing T64 in 2019 and missing the cut in 2020. Since then, however, he’s made notable improvements with finishes of T21 in 2021, a missed cut in 2022, followed by a strong T12 in 2023 and a T26 last year at Valhalla.
At Quail Hollow, Conners initially found the course difficult, failing to crack the top 40 in his first three Wells Fargo Championship appearances. But he’s turned things around in recent years, finishing T8 in 2023 and backing it up with a T14 in 2024, gaining strokes on approach and off the tee in both events.

Harris English (+130) – DraftKings
Harris English enters this week’s PGA Championship with momentum and familiarity on his side. Earlier this season, English captured his fifth PGA TOUR victory at the Farmers Insurance Open held at Torrey Pines—one of the key comparable courses to Quail Hollow Club. He’s continued to play solid golf leading up to this week, recording three top 20 finishes in his last four starts. English has been especially sharp on the greens, with strong putting performances complementing steady ball-striking both off the tee and on approach. He also turned in a respectable T24 at the Genesis Invitational, which was played at Torrey Pines South this year.
While English hasn’t historically excelled at the PGA Championship, he did post a career-best finish at the event last season, placing T18 at Valhalla. That marked just his second career top-20 finish in this major, with the other coming in 2020 at TPC Harding Park (T19).
Quail Hollow is a course English knows well. He’s played each of the last three Wells Fargo Championships at the venue, including a T3 finish in 2023 and a T34 in 2024. His past results at Quail Hollow include T43 in 2021, T54 in 2019, T17 in 2016, and a 74th-place finish in his debut back in 2012, giving him plenty of course experience heading into the year’s second major.
