NFL 2019 Playoffs – Wild Card Week

LA Chargers vs Baltimore Ravens – 2.5 O/U 41.5

You really have to give John Harbaugh some credit here for how he finished this season. Not only does he now have the best defense in yards per game, he also now has a top 10 offense. The way this team runs the ball has been extremely solid with dual threat Lamar Jackson at the helm. This Ravens team already beat the Chargers once and the question is can they do it again? Numbers-wise Baltimore really has the upper hand here. On the other side of the coin LA has been a great away team this year at an amazing 7-1 ATS beating teams like the Chiefs and Steelers on the road. Anthony Lynn should be smart enough to play contain and make Lamar Jackson beat them with his arm. Jackson is way to dangerous of a runner to just straight up blitz him. In saying that I still do not trust Lynn to do the right thing and on the other side I do not trust Lamar Jackson to not turn over the ball to pick a side here. My numbers have this game Baltimore 24 to LA 20.5 and because of this I think even though both defenses are very good, there is some value in the over. Here is a sneaky thing about the Baltimore Ravens. They actually average the most plays per game at 70.9 which is over 3 plays higher than New England who is second most at 67.1.

Over 41.5 points

Indianapolis vs Houston -1.5 O/U 49

A lot could be said how Houston has finished the season at 11-5 and the same could be said on how great Andrew Luck has looked with the colts coming in second in passing yards. Both teams benefited from having the easiest schedules this year in football. The Colts hit a bad patch of games during the mid season due to many injuries but if you look at the report now they are quite healthy while the Texas just lost Demarious Thomas, LB Brian Peters and CB Kavon Webster with 3 other important guys questionable for this game. If everyone was healthy, I have the Colts about a 1 point favorite on a neutral field meaning the Texans should be favored by 2 at home but now with the injuries you have to make this game more of a pickem and I also think that the colts have a coaching and momentum advantage here. I do not think too much of coach O’brien for the Texans and I think if they win, it would have to be all from DeShawn Watson and the D. I have this game 23-23. Being that defense Travels and the Texans still have JJ Watt and Clowney, I tend to really like the under in this game.

Texans vs Colts Under 49

Seattle vs Dallas -1 O/U 43

These teams are literally the same teams stat wise. Both are almost exact on offense at around 350 yards per game and both on Defense allowing about the same. You wonder how these teams made the playoffs matching in yards per play like this. Seattle has had a great finish to the season making the playoffs and all while Dallas was kinda up and down. Both teams run the ball very well as we have seen. I think that these teams are very dependent on their home fields and can be a much different team away. We just recently saw Seattle dominate KC at home yet they lost to San Francisco Away and we saw Dallas dominate New Orleans at home while getting shut out in Indi. I have this game from a numbers perspective Dallas winning 23 to 22 but that factors in the whole body of work. Dallas is a much better team at home at 5-2-1 ATS while Seattle is a modest 3-3-1 ATS away. I also really like what Cowboys tight end Blake Jarwin showed last week who had 3 Tds and being a new weapon for Dak. The Seahawks are a little more banged up than the Cowboys on the injury report. The coaching advantage definitely goes to Pete Carrol here but this is also a revenge spot for big D so I have to reluctantly go with Dallas -1.

Dallas -1

Philadelphia vs Chicago -5.5 O/U 41

This number has been bouncing around 5 or 6 because most power ratings have the Bears about 2 points better than the Eagles. What can you say about the Nick Foles led Eagles? This is a very scary team beating the Rams and Texans on the road before shutting out the Redskins last week to make the playoffs. Both coach Nagy and Peterson know each other well from being in Kansas City under Andy Reid. As a matter of fact they are buddies and there is probably no other coach that knows each other better. Now this actually should favor both teams. Both have great D coordinators with Jim Schwartz and Vic Fangio. The Bears are definitely healthier here on D especially in the defensive backs but the Eagles are no slouches against the run ranking 8th and trending up. The Eagles definitely have been here before so they might end up being more confident on offense here with Nick Foles at the helm than first time Bears playoff QB Mitch Trubisky and he could be more prone to mistakes. The kicker here is that crazy good pass rush Chicago has. Foles has some rib injuries and that hurts so he might be wanting to get rid of the ball pretty quickly. From a pure numbers perspective my Algorithm has this game the Bears winning 24 to 19.5 so this spread is right on from that perspective. Mitch has to have a decent game here and since the Eagles are decimated in the secondary he should be able to make a few things happen. The fact that the Eagles have been here before with Foles worries me a bit and makes me lean to take the points..

Tonight we have the Thunder visiting Portland on primetime. You can catch the game on ESPN. Portland has found their groove, Lillard is averaging 26 a game and is hitting shots when they need them the most. Jusuf Nurkic is coming off a 24 Point 23 rebound outing. Portland is 14-6 at Home this year, OKC will definitely have their hands full. I feel like this game is more about the Thunder than the Trailblazers, Portland is definitely playing some good ball but you got to think Westbrook will find his shot sooner than later. Hes averaging a Triple-double but shooting poorly, scoring a triple-double while going 3 for 20 from the field. You’ve got to figure if he can just shoot better than 30% he will be highly effective and carry OKC.

NC State vs Miami -2

*WARNING* I am going against some sharp action here. This spread was NC State -3 and now it is down to -2. The reason for this Miami side is that they are a home dog and they usually have a good home court advantage. Well they are 3-4 ATS at home this year which isn’t that impressive to me. According to Kenpom.com NC State has had the 3rd easiest schedule out of 353 College Basketball teams but I do not know how that is possible being that they played at Wisconsin, Penn State, Vanderbilt and at home against Auburn. Miami’s toughest games on the other hand were against Seton Hall, Fresno State and Rutgers. They also lost to teams like Yale and Penn this year. I do not like this year’s Miami Team and they will have to shoot out of their minds in order to beat NC State. Did I mention that NC State is 10-3 ATS this year? Going againts the money with the Wolfpack

NC State -2

Quick Hitter: Samford vs East TN State -9

This one is pretty simple. Samford has done very well for themselves at 11-4 and being 5-0 on the road ATS while East Tennessee State has also done well at 11-4 being 5-0 ATS at home. Both teams are 1-1 in conference play and both lost one game each to the top 2 teams in the conference. The kicker here to me is that I think Samford has had some harder competition playing Ohio State, Tennessee and Belmont while Eastern Tennessee has only played Illinois and Creighton for top power teams. I am not impressed by their body of work at all and do not think they should be laying 9 in their first conference game. 97% of the money is on Samford and so am I.

Happy New Year to everyone lets start the Year out right with a few plays. My favorite play tonight comes in the late game, Philadelphia traveling to the Staples Center to play the Clippers. Two teams looking to start the new year better than they ended it. Sixers haven’t been with Star Embiid for the past couple games and say he may be available Tuesday. Williams has been out for the Clips and has proved to be value off the bench as they aren’t the same without him. Both teams move with some pace and are pretty efficient offensively, but as of late they both are missing key pieces and lack the flow we typically see. I think we’ll see less offense tonight as both teams will try and win with Defense

College Bowls January 1st 2019

The Outback Bowl, Tampa Florida – Mississippi State vs Iowa +7 O/U 44

Dual action sharp and public on Mississippi State bringing this spread from -5 to -7. Iowa is without their TE Noah Fant cause he is holding out for the draft.   They also have had some banged up TEs this year but I would be hard pressed to think that their isn’t another 6’7 corn fed Hawkeye kid that that catch the ball and run a little bit in this state. Both these teams are better than what they showed during the regular season.   No huge wins and had opportunities but fizzed out at the end.   Both teams have top 6 defenses both allowing less than 300 yards per game with mediocre offenses. Both programs also had hard schedules. Kirk Ferentz has more experience then Joe Moorhead due to Joe’s first year as the boss. Ran the numbers and I have Mississippi state winning 23 to 20.5 so this is a play for me.   This low total tells me how to bet this game

Iowa +7 and ML

The Citrus Bowl, Orlando Florida – Kentucky vs Penn State -6.5 O/U 47.5

It is pretty strange that Kentucky football is looking better than Kentucky basketball so far this year. I am very impressed by some of their wins at Florida, Missouri and home against Mississippi State. This team was rewarded with a great bowl game and it is well deserved. Mark Stoops did a fantastic job with these lower recruits. Penn State on the other hand has had a typical Penn State year blowing out a lot of teams but still falling short in the Big games vs Michigan and Ohio State. What I will say about the Nitney Lions is that they will be motivated for this game. James Franklin has an impressive 5-2 ATS in bowl games and this will be Tracey McSorleys final game and final audition to the NFL. Penn State has quietly had a great defense allowing only 4.7 yards per play with a very tough schedule. Kentucky gave up 5.2 on defense. I do like both running backs Miles Sanders for Penn State is a 5 star guy and Benny Snell of Kentucky played just as well but the Nitney Lions are better at stopping the run allowing only 4 yards per carry. Penn State has a more explosive offense than the Wildcats averaging about 6.2 yards per play to 5.7. The stats are screaming at me to take Penn State and the kicker is that McSorley will have a great game and audition for the NFL.

Penn State -6.5

The Fiesta bowl, Glendale Arizona – UCF vs LSU -7.5 O/U 55.5

It is too hard to cap this especially with McKenzie Milton out for Central Florida. One would think that LSU should be able to just run the ball all over the black knights with UCF allowing 4.8 Yards per rush on defense in the AAC which isn’t good at all. What is LSU’s Motivation here?   Would they be embarrassed like Auburn if they lose this game or would they rather stick it to the committee and potentially the integrity of this years national champion/Alabama if UCF remains undefeated? Well if you like crazy conspiracy theories than maybe take Central Florida on the Money Line +245 and if you don’t then LSU should be able to pound this team -7.5. I personally hate this +7.5 spread and do not think it will come into play. This game might have to be a live betting situation such as what Chris said.

Live bet during the first drive. If it is LSU looks great take them.  If not then take UCF.

The Rose Bowl, Pasadena California – Ohio State vs Washington +7 O/U 57.5

So when Urban Meyer announced that he is again retiring from College Football, everyone and their mom decided to go and bet Ohio State driving this line up to 7. 83% of the tickets are on Ohio State and 89% of the money is as well. It’s almost like Washington doesn’t even deserve to play in this game. Washington’s players must really hate their coach Chris Peterson. The Husky’s Quarterback Jake Browning must not want to play in the NFL. All sarcasm aside I actually have Ohio State from a power ratings perspective about 8 points better than Washington but if I took Ohio State it isn’t because of this motivation factor because we also do not know what the underclassman think about the coach who recruited them leaving to be assistant Athletic Director at the University. One thing that is for sure is that Ohio State’s defense was not good this year allowing 5.8 yards per play to Washington’s 4.6. The Buckeye’s edge out Washington at 6.7 yards per play on offense to the Husky’s 6.1 One thing that I found is that Washington has been a terrible second half team. They rank 126th at 8.2 points in the second half while Ohio State ranks 4th at 21.8. Ohio State has a better points average at 21-17 also in the first half but Washington has had the harder overall schedule. I am going to play this one and take Washington to cover 3.5 in the first half and Ohio State in the second.

Washington +3.5 first half and Ohio State Second Half

The Sugar Bowl, New Orleans LA – Texas vs Georgia -13 O/U 58

We all know who Georgia is as that team who is Top 4 that isn’t in the playoffs. My big question here is what is Georgia’s motivation after losing that game with that terrible fake punt call vs Alabama. They had them! How defeating of a loss and does beating Texas prove anything?   Most Power ratings has Georgia by 11 to 14 points. Jake Fromm is a baller and I think he will try to win but Sam Ellinger from Texas is also a winner and we don’t have to talk about Tom Herman as a dog. Texas plays up or down to their competition. I have this game Georgia 35-23 but no lean on the side due to motivational questions….

Small lean to Georgia -13 and lean over 58

Pick: Oregon -2/Lean

Analytics Agree: 3 of 5

Seeing some books at -1.5 on Monday.

MSU comes in sputtering on offense.  The offense was nothing special most of the season to begin with but the Spartans averaged 8.7 ppg in their last 3 on offense.  They were only able to beat Rutgers 14-10 in East Lansing to close the season. MSU comes in with the #115 ranked offense. QB Lewerke is probable today.  I don’t think it matters. He might actually hurt the Spartans. He has an 8/10 TD/INT ratio and completed only 54.18% of his passes this season.

Despite a very strong MSU defense, they were still #65 vs the pass this season.  They excel vs the run. Oregon has a balanced attack #48 rushing #43 passing #31 total offense and a decisive advantage at QB with Herbert who has a 28/8 TD/INT ratio.  Oregon is the #17 scoring offense.

College Bowl Games December 31st

The Military Bowl, Annapolis Maryland – Cincinnati vs Virginia Tech +5.5 O/U 53.5

Here is another weird game in the middle of 2 key numbers. Cincinnati had a fantastic year going 10-2 and deserved a good bowl game while Virginia tech was very disappointing team this year losing to teams like Old Dominion, Miami, and Boston College. They haven’t beaten any ranked teams but they did one thing that was great. They finished out their season beating Virginia and Marshall to continue their bowl streak of 26 consecutive appearances. This now the most in a row for current teams now that Florida State is out at 36 years. The Bearcats on the other hand hasn’t really played anybody with a pulse besides Temple and Central Florida losing to both teams. Well they barely beat Ohio so I give them that. The Bearcats did great things on defense allowing only 4.6 yards per play while averaging 6.1 on offense. Most of the offense is due to beast running back Michael Warren who had over 1100 yards this year. It was mostly Virginia Tech’s defense who failed them this year allowing 6.4 yards per play and 5.4 yards per rush. Now it didn’t look like this those last 2 games. Something clicked with this team so I really don’t want to take the favorite who should be able to run all over the Hokies laying 5.5 points. These schedules are much too different here and my lean is Va Tech and the under

Lean Virginia Tech +5.5 maybe a small over 52 play

The Redbox Bowl, Santa Clara California – Michigan State vs Oregon -2.5 O/U 48

Well this certainly is more of a home game for Oregon yet it is still a 560 mile drive for fans from Eugene. What can we say about this Michigan State team? Talk about wasting a great defense this year? Their D averaged 2.6 against the run which is top 2. 18 points allowed per gamewhich is top 14 and 4.6 yards per play which is top 12. Their pathetic offense only averaged 4.7 yards per play. Part of this terrible play was being without RB LJ Scott for a few games and also losing Felton Davis for the season in October. Their star cornerback Justin Layne will be sitting out this game for the NFL draft. Oregon on the other hand also had high expectations with new coach Mario Christibal but that fizzled out when they first blew that game against Stanford and then later losing to Arizona was unacceptable. At least Oregon with Justin Herbert at the helm has an offense that can move the ball averaging 6 yards per play. One thing I hate doing is betting against a seasoned coach like Mark Dantonio in bowl games. He is 6-4 ATS and knows how to stop teams dead in their tracks. Power ratings has this about a pickem but If I had to choose a side here I would lean Oregon with the points but the only play here for me would be under 48. I think Michigan State runs the ball all day and tries to control the Time of Possession.

Under 48 small

The Liberty Bowl, Memphis Tennessee – Missouri vs Oklahoma State +8 O/U 74.5

Well this total tells you a lot about this game. Oklahoma State saved my season win total under 7.5 when losing to TCU at the end of the season. More importantly, anybody that gives up 31 points to TCU should have to take a trip to the pit of misery. Missouri has been amazing since their Alabama game winning 5 out of 6. Pretty big wins there against Florida and Memphis and averaging 40 points per game during that stretch. Oklahoma State in my opinion had some big wins vs West Virginia and Texas but they seemed to catch teams at the right time this year. When they played anyone with a pulse of a defense they lost to K state by 19, Texas Tech by 24 and Iowa State at home by 6. If you plug their yards per play numbers it favors Oklahoma State but you can’t use that looking at these schedules. Missouri had to play Alabama, Georgia, Purdue, South Carolina and Kentucky while Oklahoma State had the typical big 12 schedule and Boise State who gave up some special teams touchdowns to them. If you go by most power ratings is has Missouri by 7 or 8 hence the line move but I am going by what Jeff Sagarin has from a recency perspective that puts much more weight on how you finished the season. If you look at that the Power rating shows Missouri winning this game by 18 points. This Oklahoma State team is fake news. What’s real news is that their star RB Justice Hill is not playing this bowl game while Drew Locke is for Missouri is. This high total says a lot to me. I am taking Missouri -8

Missouri -8

The Holiday Bowl, San Diego California – Northwestern vs Utah – +7.0 O/U 46

Both coaches Pat Fitzgerald and Kyle Wittingham have fantastic bowl records ATS With Kyle at 8-3 ant Pat at 6-4 since 2005. Here is another game of some very solid teams. The strange thing about Northwestern is that they played great in the Big 10 West and terrible in the non-conference losing every game to Notre Dame, Akron and Duke oh and all those games were at home BTW. They give up .8 yards per play more on defense than they do on offense. They only beat Rutgers by 3 and Illinois by 8. BUT, this is also the team that beat Purdue, Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska. They also almost beat Michigan and lost at the very end. Utah on the other hand did very well and won the Pac 12 South but they had a very mild Pac 12 schedule with non conference games vs NIU, BYU and Weber State. Utah’s QB Tyler Hundley should finally be back for this game but he may be rusty. Northwestern will be without LB Nate hall and DT Jordan Thompson due to surgeries. If it wasn’t for these injuries I would play NU at +7 seeing that they tend to keep most games close but I am going to wait and see where this line goes.

Lean NU +7

The Taxslayer Bowl, Jacksonville Florida – Texas A&M vs NC State +7 O/U 58.5

These Teams seem pretty similar here to me. Both teams won their last 3 games. Both teams like to throw the ball. Both teams around 6.2 yards per play.  NC State gives up 5.7 yards per play and Texas A&M gives up 5.9 but the Aggies Run the ball better at 4.9 yards per rush to the Wolfpack’s 3.9. Jimbo Fisher is 5-3 ATS in bowl games while Dave Doeren is 4-1 so no advantage there. Texas A & M had a way harder schedule then NC State ranking 4th on Sagarin to NC State’s 69. My algorithm has this game closer to a pickem even after adjusting for strength of schedule. Texas A&M lacks some important efficiencies like a lower 3rd down and field goal percentage. NC State is better on 3rd down at 50% to the Aggie’s 40%. NC State is 87% at field goal percentage to A&M’s 70%. I have Texas A&M winning 29.5-28.5

NC State +7 small

The Sun Bowl, El Paso Texas – Pittsburgh vs Stanford -5.5 O/U 52

Let’s just start out by saying that Stanford’s David Shaw is 5-2 ATS in bowl games while Pittsburgh’s Pat Narduzzi is 0-2. Bryce Love is sitting out this bowl game but I don’t think it affected the spread much seeing that he was banged up all year. The huge narrative of the Pac-12 has been to fade them because of how bad they have been in bowl games and very disrespected not only in the media but also the betting Market. This line opened up around a 7 and sharp money came in on Pittsburgh. Now in my opinion, I do not think that the ACC was all that either so I do not really trust all this Pitt money. What I can trust is that Pittsburgh is a great running team at 5.6 yards per carry and runs 65% of the time. I also like how Pitt ran through some very good teams mid season. Both these teams have weak defenses giving up about 5.8 yards per play. If Stanford can’t stop the run they could lose this game outright. Both teams play top 10 slowest in the nation so I can’t take the over even though these defenses are bad. I don’t love this game but I lean Pittsburgh plus the points.

Lean Pitt +5.5

NFL Week 17

Miami vs Buffalo -3.5

So we know that Miami is trying to be 8-8 and finish .500 this week. This is why you see Ryan Tannehill starting. There is some rumors that are probably true that the Dolphins may move on from Ryan Tannehill so they don’t have to pay him 19 million next year. There is also rumors that Adam Gase will be gone. Now I know that Sean McDermot and the Buffalo Bills want to finish their season strong but do you think that they should be laying over 3 points at home to anybody not named the Cardinals this year? Is Adam Gase just going to sit there and not be motivated to win this game? Now I know that Miami is pretty banged up in the secondary and will be without Xavian Howard and TJ McDonald but should that matter so much vs a rookie QB who mainly runs the ball like Josh Allen? Football outsiders has Buffalo as the 31st best team and Miami is at 25. Most power ratings has Miami by 1.5 on neutral field so that should be a dog by only 1.5 at home. I’ll take the fish +3 and the hook

Miami +3.5

San Francisco vs LA Rams -9.5

Here is another one that I am not quite understanding. The Rams haven’t looked all that great since clinching the division while the Niners have some life left in them. It is pretty clear to me that Sean McVey cares more about being healthy than wooping up on their rivals. Now they did get some things right last week playing the worst team in football but looking at the 49ers, I think that they have some motivational factors coming into this game. I think Kyle Shanahan wants to get a huge W to finish the year and come into next season with momentum motivation. San Francisco is pretty banged up at Wide Receiver and RBs but they still have George Kittle who has shown that he can carry the load all by himself. Matt Breida is out for the year but backup Jeff Wilson looks just as good to me. On the Rams side of things, it is looking like Todd Gurley will be held out once again for CJ Anderson to take the Rock. He is worth 3 points in my book. Safety LeMarcus Joyner may be sitting this one out as well. I like the way the 49ers have been playing their last 3 games against the Seahawks, Broncos and Bears so I will happily take those points in a division game.

San Francisco +9.5

Dallas vs NY Giants -6

So everyone knows that Jason Garrett has been on the hot seat for like 3 years. Some thought he would be fired mid season and he saved his Job by wining the division. At least temporarily saved his job. He has 1 more opportunity to get fired here. He can play Zeke Elliot, Dak Prescott, Zach Martin, Sean Lee and Amari Cooper and let one of them get banged up in a completely meaningless game just to beat the Giants and then he would get fired before the season. Now I have never been a huge Jason Garret fan but I even don’t think that he is this stupid. I also know this could be Eli Manning’s last start as a New York Giant in New York. There should be some motivation there. I know Odell is out and all but Eli was able to topple the redskins without him. Giants will want to finish with a bang here so lay the points.

New York Giants -6

Chicago vs Minnesota -4.5

So in Bears coach Matt Nagy’s mind he is still playing for a first round bye while the Vikings are playing to make the playoffs. In this situation i usually favor the team that is do or die. Power ratings has the Vikings -1 at home but it is -4.5 for motivational questions. Vikings have been playing solid now with Dalvin Cook back and new offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski who was a Pat Shurmer student. So the big question here is will the Bears be motivated? The answer is YES but only guaranteed for the first half. If the Rams are blowing out the 49ers at the half Matt Nagy said he could pull his starters. This means that there is some obvious value on the first half line here. If you need any more acumen here, Doug Peterson coach of the Eagles may have called his buddy Matt Nagy here and told him to beat the Vikings so the Eagles can make the playoffs 🙂

Bears first half +2.5 +100

Big star Teaser! Philadelphia to -.5 and LA Chargers to -.5 Both teams are playing for something
