MLB – Tuesday Free Play – Cubs Crushing Camden

Happy Tuesday everyone! It’s been a while since I published an MLB post here. May was extremely busy for me and since I write most of these posts at night (That full time day job gets in the way) there just hasn’t been much time. Lucky for you, the first two weeks of May were the worst stretch of baseball betting I have ever been through. But now, We’ve righted the ship and are back on track looking forward to a profitable June. Let’s get to today’s Free Play.

Today I am looking to Baltimore for the match-up between the Cubs and Orioles. There is potential storms on the horizon this evening, and moving those storms along will be some serious breezes. The wind will be blowing out to Left Center at 10-15 mph with gusts much higher. So what do those winds mean for our game this evening?

Kyle Bradish will be on the mound for the Orioles tonight. He comes in sporting a 6.82 ERA, but is due for some serious positive regression. His LOB% is below league average at 65.4% and should come up. The BABIP against him is currently .368 while league average sits right around .300. Bradish is also giving up a HR on 24.2% of fly balls which is a ridiculously high number. Put those together and his xFIP is actually at 3.72. The problem I have with Bradish for tonight is he is giving up 34.7% Fly Balls and 22.1% Line Drives. The hard contact rate is 44.2% and the barrel rate is 11.6%. Add those up and I think his issue of allowing Home Runs continues. The Cubs have put up 5.3 runs per game over the last week and are in the middle of the pack in OPS and Home Runs and should move up a bit this evening.

Keegan Thompson is the starter for the Cubs and has posted an incredible 6-0 with a 1.99 ERA to start the season. He is due to regress in the negative direction with a 3.95 xFIP. While his K-Rate is lower than Bradish it’s the other things he does better that will lead to his continued success tonight in Baltimore. His ground ball rate is 52.5% and his FB% is 34.2% which will play well with the winds blowing out. He is also doing a great job of limiting hard contact. The Orioles are the 4th most strikeout prone team in MLB, and hold only a .669 OPS vs right handed pitching.

There could be some fireworks in this one once we get to the bullpens especially

I’m on the Cubs tonight two ways. F5 -110 1 Unit, ML -110 1 Unit

Also Lean over 8.5

NBA Finals Psychology – Tendencies to Note

Celtics and Warriors NBA Finals poster.

Hi all! A big part of my NBA handicapping is measuring the psychology of individual players  and their related team behaviors. Below are some of these observations, which may help you more accurately assess these two squads and ultimately, win more wagers. After all, that’s our goal, right?!

Chris is 71-54 (57%) for +12 units in the NBA playoffs – check out his premium picks to get this quality of winnings in every sport, every day, directly in your inbox!

Individual Observations:

  • Don’t expect Klay Thompson to give up after a few bad shooting performances. On the road he’s averaging nearly 20 ppg in this year’s NBA playoffs, and his assassin-like precision tends to be the steady hand for Golden State in away games, especially when Steph Curry is on the bench.
  • There doesn’t seem to be a clear correlation between Jason Tatum or Jaylen Brown leading Boston’s team scoring and the Celtics winning. Boston usually just needs one of their two superstars to have a big showing to win. So far we’ve seen spikes and we’ve seen dips in performance from both players at various moments in the first two games. I would expect them to both settle in more at home.
  • Al Horford looked shook, particularly in the paint, in game two. Don’t expect him to reflect the same disposition in game three. Horford has responded with surprising ferocity throughout the NBA Playoffs, especially after a bad performance, and no player is more motivated to win an NBA Championship than the 15-year veteran.
  • Is anyone showing more effort than Kevon Looney? The big man has found a new spark, offering nearly 8 rebounds per game and, more importantly, his high-energy defense has cleared the paint and prevented Boston from snagging more offensive rebounds. There is no data on “clearing the paint” or “boxing out,” but it matters.
  • I would argue that no player is more singularly important in this series than Marcus Smart. You’re welcome to explore the data yourself but take my word for it: when Smart’s point differential is in the +, Boston wins. When it’s in the -, Boston loses.
  • Similarly to Marcus Smart, the Warriors tend to accelerate (or decelerate) based on Draymond Green’s level of energy. Golden State is known as a more “flamboyant” team for obvious reasons, but all great teams need a gritty, physical tough-guy to intimidate the other side. Boston prides themselves on their physicality and toughness; Draymond must continue his aggressive approach to take the Celtics off that perceived pedestal.

Team Observations:

  • The Golden State Warriors continue to come alive and make amazing adjustments after halftime. On the year, they’re the highest-rated second half team. There’s little to no reason to expect any sort of negative regression, and it’s part of the reason why their performance in the 4th quarter of game one was so shocking.
  • The highest home rating in the NBA? The Warriors. The highest away rating in the NBA? The Celtics. Quite a quandary, but it makes sense that we have a tied series thus far.
  • When we think of interior paint defense we think of the Boston Celtics, but make no mistake about it – the Warriors are exceptional at defending the rim and they’ve been a top 5 defense in “opponent paint points” all season. This will continue to be a point of emphasis for the Golden State defense and when Boston struggles to find low-to-mid-range success, they often lose.
  • We’ve noticed that Boston can easily be taken out of their groove when a team “punches them in the mouth” early. It happened against Milwaukee, against Miami, and it happened against Golden State in game two. When the Celtics are the aggressors, it’s a different story. Objectively, the Celtics are much taller and athletic than the Warriors. Watch where Boston holds the ball in the proceeding games. If they’re sticking to fundamentals and expressing patience, they hold the ball high above the Warriors’ defenders, and this means they’re probably more settled in and confident. When they look antsy and out-of-sync, they tend to bring the ball down and, to no one’s surprise, the Warriors take advantage by poking and prying it out. This also goes back to Draymond Green and why he’s so important for the Warriors’ success.
  • Both Boston and Golden State has shown a proclivity to “let-down” in spots that aren’t ideal, especially this postseason. The Warriors in games four of their series against Denver and Dallas are great examples. The Celtics in game five against Milwaukee and game six against Miami are another two cases. In this series, the team who has more consistent mental fortitude will probably hold the trophy. This is why Golden State’s experience is so important and why I give them a slight advantage in the NBA Finals. Others will dismiss this factor – I do not.

Props I Like in Game 3

Execute at your own discretion:

  • First 3pt FG Made: Boston (-121)
  • Marcus Smart over 13.5 pts (-114)
  • Kevon Looney over 8.5 reb (-126)
  • Al Horford over 1.5 threes (-115)
  • Jaylen Brown over 2.5 threes (-130)
  • Klay Thompson over 20 pts (-110)

Premiums, 6.7

Up late and capping MLB, cuz why the hell wouldn’t I? Here are my baseball plays for tomorrow (Tuesday), below:

MLB Picks:
(Keeping this) Guardians win (-125), to win 1 unit
Cal Quantrill (3.87 FIP) has been solid for the Guardians and Jon Gray is struggling to find consistency. The Guardians are also proving that they have young, talented hitters (like Gimenez and Owen Miller) who can keep them afloat and capitalize on unsteady throwers. I like CLE to win at home.

Reds (-130), 1.3 units to win 1
This is about as good a setup as it gets, for Cincinnati, at home, behind a young Graham Ashcraft who looks to have real potential. Even if he’s average, it’s usually enough to beat Arizona.
Cubs (-110), 1.1 units to win 1
It could be rainy and this could be cancelled tomorrow, but we like what we see from Keegan Thompson and against the struggling Bradish, sign me up.
Phillies/Brewers under 8.5 (-110), 1.1 units to win 1
Jason Alexander has looked good in short innings, Ranger Suarez is due for positive regression, and the Phillies are due for a nice long cool streak against a superior pitching team on the road. I like the under.
Parlay: Astros/Jays/Giants, 1 unit to win 2.16 units

NHL Playoff Preview & Picks – June 6th, 2022

The Avalanche look to complete the sweep tonight against the Edmonton Oilers. If Colorado wins, they’ll advance to the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time since 2001. In their history they have made two finals appearances, winning both.

Colorado Avalanche @ Edmonton Oilers (Series: COL 3-0)

Colorado is the road favorite in this matchup tonight around -130/-140 on the money line depending on the book. They’re 6-0 in away games this post season covered the puck line in five of those six games. The Avalanche have also been favorited in every game in these playoffs but are going off at their second shortest price tonight. In Game 1 they went off at -115 but that line has increased tonight despite the fact that Edmonton needs to win to stay alive.

The starting lineups will look a little different tonight. Evander Kane hit Nazem Kadri from behind in Game 3 knocking him out of the rest of this series. Due to the play, Evander Kane received a one game suspension. Oilers prospect, Dylan Halloway will also make his NHL debut tonight. He was selected 14th overall in the 2020 draft.

Neither team has confirmed their starter for tonight. Pavel Francouz has started the past two games with Darcy Kuemper out. Mike Smith has started all three games for Edmonton but has allowed three or more goals in each of those games. Smith struggled in Game 1 but played pretty well in the two most recent games. If the Oilers don’t go with Mike Smith tonight, it’s expected that Mikko Koskinen will get the nod.

Despite the fact that it is an elimination game for the Oilers, I do think the Avalanche close the series out tonight. They’ve been the better team in nearly every category and even with the loss of Kadri, which is significant, they have enough depth scoring to make up for it. Leon Draisaitl also hasn’t been the same since suffering an ankle injury in the first round and Colorado has the speed to shut down McDavid.

PICK: [1u] Colorado Avalanche -135 (Caesars)

Best of luck, and as always you can find me on Twitter @GatorBetting and Instagram @Gator_Sports_Betting.

June 6th MLB Plays

After another profitable weekend, I am now +17.31u over the past 28 days. I’m rolling with a pair of plays to kick off the new week. To receive a text when I release/add any plays, join my Telegram group!

*MLB(1u): Astros F5 -0.5(-105) vs Mariners–7:10 PM CT

In 23.2 innings pitching at Minute Maid Park this season, Astros SP Cristian Javier has yielded just 1(!) run and is striking out nearly 11.5 batters per 9 innings on the year. The Mariners offense is very mediocre across the board and is not a unit I want to trust when stepping up in competition. Mariners SP Robbie Ray might’ve won the AL Cy Young last season, but his FIP was nearly a full run higher than his ERA in 2021 due to the fact he held an astounding 90% of runners on base. Failing to find that same luck, Ray’s ERA has climbed near 5.00 this year with his WHIP settling in at 1.25. While Ray is still missing bats, he’s also allowing 1.5 HR/9 and walking 4.6 per 9 innings on the road this year. The Astros have yet to really get their offense rolling, but they have seen lefties better in their home ballpark over the first two months of this season. I expect Javier to continue his dominance at Minute Maid Park and for the Astros to find a way to take a lead into the later innings.

*MLB(1u): Angels F5 TT OVER 2.5(+105) vs Red Sox–8:38 PM CT

The Angels’ 11 game losing streak is one of the biggest stories in baseball right now. While this team is enduring a rough stretch, they were able to put up 7 runs in Philadelphia yesterday. In any case, Red Sox SP Michael Wacha is a guy I want to fade into oblivion. Wacha held an ERA north of 5.00 each of the past 2 seasons but now holds a 2.43 ERA and 1.01 WHIP through 8 starts this season. With that said, Wacha has always had atrocious road numbers, and a FIP at 4.12 is much more reflective of the type of pitcher he is. He’s striking out less than 6 batters per 9 innings, a recipe I don’t think will lead to good results in the long term for an arm that doesn’t have great stuff to begin with. Even with their recent skid in mind, the Angels still hold the 2nd highest team OPS vs right-handed pitching in their home ballpark this season and will be greeted back by an 8 mph wind blowing out to CF tonight. The Angels might be struggling at the moment, but facing Wacha is a great opportunity for them to get back on track. I’ll isolate the F5 TT in this one.

Premiums, 6.6

What’s up team – losing overall night in the Finals Game 2 but it felt like we had the right narratives and angles – just didn’t pick the right bets (which, obviously, is a big part of winning in this industry, ha). Warriors 1Q probably should have been a win (4-5 missed layups and a few missed FTs didn’t help) and the Celtics seemed to give up in the 3rd QTR. Nothing shocking from our purview. Despite what Twitter will tell you, the Warriors are a very good outfit and this will remain a very close series, in my opinion. People crowning the Celtics as champions after one game was a bit silly. Onto my prospective picks for game 3 and a few MLB plays tonight:

NBA Finals, Game 3:
Celtics 1Q -1, 1.5 units
Full Game under 212.5, 1.5 units
Much like the response we expected from Golden State, we expect the same aggression and retribution from Boston on Wednesday. Boston is back home at the TD Garden Arena and they’re well-aware that Golden State needs to win one of those road games to take the series back and have the home-court-advantage. The Celtics cannot allow the Warriors to penetrate the paint as often as they did in game two, and supporting cast members like Horford, Smart, and Grant Williams should have more productive games. I think the Celtics get off to a quick start and force Golden State to play from behind early, but watch out for that infamous 3rd quarter turn – wouldn’t be a bad idea to play on Golden State if that live line gets inflated.
As far as the total goes, at least one of these defenses will assert themselves in these contests and in all likelihood, both will win more than they’ll lose as this series drags on. Bodies are hurt (Tatum’s shoulder for example), players are battling and taking hard fouls, and getting into the paint will become more and more challenging. The pace dropped significantly at key moments in game two, partially because of the Warriors’ big lead, and even with a slew of turnovers we saw a total score that fell well-below the listed number; 212.5 feels 5-7 points too high; I’m on the under.
MLB Picks:

Guardians win (-125), to win 1 unit
Cal Quantrill (3.87 FIP) has been solid for the Guardians and Jon Gray is struggling to find consistency. The Guardians are also proving that they have young, talented hitters (like Gimenez and Owen Miller) who can keep them afloat and capitalize on unsteady throwers. I like CLE to win at home.

Astros -1.5 (+120), 1 unit to win 1.2 units
Christian Javier is the far-superior pitcher in this matchup and I don’t love this spot for Seattle, on the road, opening up this series with Robbie Ray (who’s had issues for awhile now) at the mound. I think the Astros clobber Seattle.

NFC South 2022 Preview – Season Win Totals – Sports Betting

NFC South:  The South will certainly be an interesting division this year.  The long time powerful New Orleans Saints will have a new coach while Tom Brady will be playing under coach Todd Bowls who gets a second life coaching with the consensus GOAT at QB after some ugly failures as head coach for the NY Jets.  The NFC South plays the NFC West and the AFC North which feels somewhat medium to me.  The at large games will be tough on top and easy on the bottom looking at the discrepancy in the NFC North and NFC East.  I was right about the Saints last year, yet very wrong about the Panthers.   Let’s see what 2022 has to offer.

1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers –

Vegas Win Total:  11.5 juiced to the under -120

2021 Wins:  13

Pythagorean Wins:  11.6

Schedule: Medium Easy – At large games @ Dallas, vs Green Bay, vs Kansas City.

Schedule Last Year: Medium Hard

Key losses: Coach Bruce Ahriens G Alex Cappa, S Jordan Whitehead, RB Ronald Jones, Edge Jason Pierre Paul, DT Ndamukong Suh, CB Richard Sherman, TE Rob Gronkowski, G Shaq Mason, TE OJ Howard

Key additions:  Coach Todd Bowles, S Keanu Neal, WR Russell Gage, DT Akiem Hicks

Key draft picks: DL Logan Hall, T Luke Goedeke, RB Raachad White, and a bunch of bums

Summary:  This team is falling apart.  I know the man who never quits in Tom Brady decided to comeback after a month of daycare, but what this team lost seems very significant.   I could be wrong, but it really does sound like Gronk might stay retired.  Also, before I forget, sorry, but how the hell did average at best WR Russell Gage get a tree year 30 million dollar contract from this team?  I just do not see how you are going to replace all of this production on defense even with new Head Coach Todd Bowles making decisions.  This team still has great players at some of the main skill positions and defense, but if they get injured, the depth of the Buccaneers seems very thin.  I do not like how they drafted and I do not like them losing their head coach.  The good news at least is that this team will have an easier schedule with how poor Atlanta and Carolina has looked as of late.  Brady will still be Brady, but I can see a much better chance for failure than success this season.

My Number is: 10.8

Tampa Bay Power Rating: 3.75

Action: Strong lean under

2. New Orleans Saints –

Vegas Win Total: 8 juiced to the over -130

2021 Wins: 9

Pythagorean Wins: 8.93

Schedule: Medium Easy – At large games vs Minnesota, vs Las Vegas, @Philadelphia

Schedule Last Year: Hard

Key Losses:  Coach Sean Payton, LT Terren Armstead, QB Trevor Siemian, ILB Kwon Alexander, SS Jeff Heath

Key additions:  Coach Dennis Allen (promoted), S Marcus Williams, S Tyrann Mathieu, WR Jarvis Landry, SS Daniel Sorensen, QB Andy Dalton

Key draft picks:  WR Chris Olave, LT Trevor Penning and a bunch of dudes

Summary:  The Saints were interesting last year to say the least.  I was absolutely floored that they got to 9 wins ,and their Pythag number at 8.93 really backs it up.   This team was pretty injured last year after Jameis Winston went down during game seven, and they really had to overachieve to be over .500.  Having nine wins on a first place schedule was impressive to me, and Michael Thomas wasn’t even playing.   I am normally concerned with coaching changes and all, but you can’t discount the fact that new coach Dennis Allen has been in the Sean Payton program there since 2015.   Another piece of continuity is their offensive coordinator.  Pete Carmichael will stay as the team’s offensive coordinator on new head coach Dennis Allen’s staff which is huge for the team to progress into the 2022 season.  My two biggest concern remains in how dedicated Jameis Winston is to the team as well as the fact that even though there is continuity, it is still not Sean Payton back leading the way.  The Saints are a legit sleeper in this division and I will be taking their win total over 8.

My number is: 10.93 wins

Action:  Over 8 wins -130 – 1 star

New Orleans Power Rating: 3

3.  Carolina Panthers –

Vegas Win Total:  6 juiced to the under -125

2021 Wins: 5

Pythagorean Wins: 6.43

Schedule: Medium – vs NY Giants, vs Denver, @Detroit

Schedule Last Year: Medium Easy

Key losses: OLB Haason Reddick, CB Stephon Gilmore, DT DaQuan Jones, C Matt Paradis, QB Cam Newton, CB AJ Bouye, G John Miller

Key additions: G Austin Corbett, S Xavier Woods, OLB Damien Wilson, C Bradley Boezeman

Key draft picks: OT Ikem Ekwonu, QB Matt Corral, LB Brandon Smith and just a few more.

Summary:  It looks to me that Matt Rhule is on borrowed time right now, and similar to the Falcons, It is hard to see this team competing this year.   What I do like is the fact that they still was able to draft a top three quarterback in Matt Corral by waiting until the 3rd round, but I am also not certain that offensive lineman Ikem Ekwonu was the best player at his position at 1st pick like all of the media pundits stated.  The problem for the Panthers is that they needed way more picks to fix that horrid offensive line, but I at least like the fact that they got a center and a decent guard in free agency.   So the market believes that this team is better than the falcons and it is probably correct.  At least this team’s Pythagorean win total at 6.43 was higher than the Falcons at 5.16.  We have to remember that this team still has a good WR core led by DJ Moore as well as good running backs in CMC, and Chubba Hubbard.   It would be fun if Matt Corral and Desmond Ritter of the Falcons both get the starting jobs by mid-season to see which quarterback has the better chance of longevity.  If Matt Corral turns out and can take the starting QB position over, there is a slight chance that this team can make some noise.

My Number: 6.22

Carolina Power Rating: -5.75

Action:  Lean over

4.  Atlanta Falcons –

Vegas Win total: 5 Juiced to the under

2021 Wins: 7

Pythagorean Wins: 5.16

Schedule: Medium Hard – At large games vs LA Chargers, vs Chicago, @Washington

Schedule Last Year: Easy

Key losses: QB Matt Ryan, LB Foyesade Olukun, WR Russell Gage, S Josh Harris, TE Hayden Hurst, DE Dante Fowler, RB Mike Davis, DE Johnathan Bullard

Key additions: QB Marcus Mariota, CB Casey Howard, DE Lorenzo Carter, LB Rashaan Evans, RB Damien Williams

Key draft picks: WR Drake London, Edge Arnold Ebiketie, QB Desmond Ridder and a bunch of Dudes.

Summary:   Atlanta’s trade of Matt Ryan pretty much tells you where this team is at this year.  Rebuild central!  But as for rebuilding, I think it was pretty dumb to start with a WR who might cost you more later than a good defensive tackle or guard.   I am going to be completely honest here.   This team is going to suck.   I didn’t like their draft at all, nor did I like their free agency.  Marcus Mariota will try to make some plays on his feet, but the defense will eventually get to him.   I think that Desmond Ridder has a shot to be a good Quarterback, but he will struggle behind this offensive line and may not get a fair shot.  Coach Arthur Smith is a play-action type football coach and they do not have the WRs or the offensive line to make that happen.

My Number: 3.58

Atlanta’s Power Rating: -8

Action:  Strong Lean under but no rush to bet it.
