NHL Playoff Preview & Picks – May 24th, 2022

Tampa Bay completed the sweep last night knocking the Florida Panthers out of the playoffs. The Lightning advance to the Eastern Conference Finals for the third consecutive year and will take on the winner of the Hurricanes/ Rangers. Out West, the Avalanche go up 3-1 in their series with St. Louis and have an opportunity to close them out at home in Game 5.

Tonight we have Game 4 between Carolina and New York with the Rangers looking to even up the series on home ice. The Hurricanes have been unbeatable on home ice this post season but have struggled on the road. In Game 3, we saw Igor Shesterkin come up big for the Rangers propelling them to a win.

In the Battle of Alberta, the Oilers have rattled off two wins in a row to take a 2-1 series lead over the Flames. Connor McDavid has been absolutely unbelievable this post season recording 23 points. The Flames have been dominated in Games 2 & 3 in terms of expected goals so we’ll see how they rebound tonight. If they do want to have a chance in this series they’ll need to try and find a way to slow McDavid down, which I’m not sure is possible given his recent play.

Carolina Hurricanes @ New York Rangers (CAR 2 – 1)

The Rangers took Game 3 at home behind an outstanding performance from Igor Shesterkin. He stopped 43 of 44 Shots Against and finished the game with an impressive +1.80 GSAx. In every game of this series he’s been great which has allowed them to stay in this matchup against Carolina. Offensively and defensively the Hurricanes are a better team with the goaltending matchup going to New York. By no means is this a knock against Antti Raanta who’s also had a positive GSAx in every game of this series but Shesterkin is going to be the Vezina trophy winner for a reason.

As I previously mentioned, the Hurricanes have yet to win a game on the road in the playoffs. For whatever reason, they can’t seem to get over that mental hurdle. In the regular season they went 25-16-4 on the road.

Just like the Hurricanes, the Rangers play their best hockey at home. During the regular season they went 31-10-5. If they want to even up the series tonight they’ll need that same offensive production they received in Game 3.

This is a tough game to pick as you can look at it through a variety of angles. You either think the Rangers dominance will continue on home ice with Carolina’s road struggles continuing as well. Or you think Carolina can finally win won on the road against an inferior opponent. Personally I think Carolina wins this game with their offense finally breaking through. Igor has been amazing ever since he was pulled in round 1 but this Carolina team has recorded over 40 shots in Game 3 which was nearly double what they produced in Games 1 and 2. I believe we see Carolina does the same thing tonight but are able to get a few more past Shesterkin. In terms of the total, this series has gone Under in every game so it’s a stay away from me but the over 5.5 at +120 is tempting…

PICK: CAROLINA HURRICANES (-105) – PointsBet

Calgary Flames @ Edmonton Oilers (EDM 2- 1)

So far the Battle of Alberta has been all about goals. In two of the first three games of this series, they’ve combined for over 8 goals. We knew coming into this series that both teams possess high power offenses but I’m not sure we expected to this many. With all of the goals scored we turn to the goaltending. Mike Smith struggled in Game 1 for Edmonton but has rebounded nicely finishing with a positive GSAx in Games 2 and 3. Jacob Markstrom, who is a Vezina finalist by the way, hasn’t played up to that level. In the first three games he only finished with a positive GSAx in one of them (Game 2).

The Oilers were in full control of Game 3 and outplayed the Flames in every area of the ice. In the first period alone Edmonton outshot the Flames 21-7. They were unable to get anything by Markstrom but took control of the game in the 2nd period scoring four.  Edmonton went on to concede one goal in the third but would end up winning that game 4-1.

We now turn to Game 4 where the Flames need to steal one on the road. If Calgary wants to have a chance in this series they’ll need their top line to lead the charge. So far in the playoffs their top line has 34 points combined, headlined by Gaudreau’s 13. We’ll also see how Markstrom rebounds after getting pulled for the last period in Game 3. He’s had an up and down post season so far but we’ll need to solidify his number one spot in net as they may turn to Vladar in Game 5.

Going into this series I though Calgary would win and so far that hasn’t been the case. However, at plus money I like the Flames in Game 4. They haven’t played their best hockey by any means in this series and are only one game away from evening up this series. Also if the Flames are going to win this one I think they have to match Edmonton’s offensive production so I like this game to go over the total as well.

PICK: CALGARY/ EDMONTON OVER 6.5 (-103) – Barstool

MLB Free Play – May 24

Los Angeles Dodgers (-220) @ Washington Nationals (+175) 7:05 PM ET

The Dodgers come into this game 28-13 on the year, and 13-8 on the road. The Nationals are 14-29 on the year, and 5-16 at home. That doesn’t tell the whole story though, even though it does paint a very chalky picture.

Walker Buehler gets the ball for the Dodgers tonight and has been on fire on the road this year. In 21 innings on the road he has given up a total of 3 runs for a 1.29 ERA. Hitters are batting .149 against him with a weighted on base average (wOBA) of .183. He also owns a .208 batting average against on balls put in play (BABIP), a 1.82 fielder independent pitching (FIP) mark, and a 2.94 expected fielder independent pitching (xFIP) mark. These are elite advanced stats going against a very sub-par Nationals lineup.

On the other side of the diamond taking the mound we have Josiah Gray. A 24 year old right hander who has struggled, particularly at home. In 21 innings pitched at home he’s given up 15 runs for a 6.43 ERA. Hitters are batting .289 against hime with a .421 wOBA. Balls in play are having success to a .367 BABIP, with a 5.58 FIP, and 3.52 xFIP. He could be in store for some positive regression at some point, but I don’t see it happening against a loaded Dodgers lineup. I think Gray struggles just as much as Adon did yesterday when he gave up 6 runs in 4.2 innings.

Hard to see the Dodgers not being up at least 2-0 after 5 innings with what should be a strong outing for Buehler.

Kansas City Royals (+175) @ Arizona Diamondbacks (-210) 9:40 PM ET

The Royals come into tonight’s game 14-27 on the year, 6-12 on the road, and 3-5 against the NL. The Arizona Diamondbacks are 22-22 on the year, 11-11 at home, and 2-1 against the AL.

Jonathan Heasley gets the ball for the Royals. He has a respectable 2.70 ERA in 3.1 innings of work on the road. The concerning part for him is the advanced stats and metrics. Hitters are batting .228 with a .352 wOBA, and a .308 BABIP. He also has had some good luck in the overall numbers as he is carrying a 6.11 FIP, and 7.35 xFIP. What this tells me is he had some good fielding help his last time out. I’m not sure he gets that here with as much as the Royals have struggled all around on the road. I look for some negative regression here. The question becomes can the D-Backs take advantage of it.

Zac Gallen, much like Walker Buehler on the road, has been nothing short of spectacular. He has thrown 24 innings and given up 2 runs to a tune of a 0.75 ERA. Hitters are only batting .133 with a .184 wOBA. The advanced stats are even more impressive as balls in play against him are only going for a .185 BABIP to go with a 2.06 FIP, and 2.96 xFIP. I don’t see any regression coming here against a Royals offense that lacks big power. Hard to manufacture runs when the balls you put in play are going for a hit less than 20% of the time.

For these reasons I see value in parlaying the F5 run lines. I will also have a play on a money line parlay for both sides as there’s some plus money value there as well.

1U: Dodgers -1 -115 F5 / D-Backs -0.5 -135 F5 parlay +225

May 24th MLB Plays

A 2-0, +2u Monday extends me to +12.5u over the last 15 days! I’m rolling with 4 MLB plays for tonight looking to add to what’s been a great month. To receive a text when I release/add any plays, join my Telegram group!

*MLB(1u): Orioles F5 TT OVER 1.5(-110) @ Yankees–6:05 PM CT

The Orioles will be facing Yankees SP Jordan Montgomery for the 4th(!) time already not even 2 months into the season. To make matters worse(or better in our case), this will be Montgomery’s second straight start against the O’s, a spot I believe heavily favors the opposing offense. While Montgomery held down the Orioles in his first two starts, he allowed 7 hits and 3 runs in Camden Yards last week and now returns to a much tougher environment. We saw the Orioles rack up 5 runs off of Gerrit Cole last night(who was also making his second straight start against the O’s), and prior to that, they swung the bats well against Tampa Bay over the weekend. This is a cheap price considering the matchup, and I want to back the O’s offense early in this game facing a familiar arm who finds himself in a bad spot.

*MLB(1u): Angels -1.5(+130) vs Rangers–8:38 PM CT

Noah Syndergaard got absolutely shelled in Texas last week and didn’t make it out of the first inning, but I expect a bounce back start from him tonight. He’s had a great deal of success at home this year, and the Rangers have a sub-.600 OPS on the road vs right-handed pitching. While this is Syndergaard’s second straight start against Texas, Rangers SP Dane Dunning finds himself in the same spot, only he has the much tougher matchup. While Dunning has found success pitching at Globe Life Field, he held a 6.39 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, and 1.6 HR/9 away from home last year. The Angels are a top 5 offense and have fared nicely at home; aside from Shohei Ohtani, the core of this Angels order has touched up Dunning in the past. There is also a major bullpen discrepancy in this game as the Angels rank 4th in bullpen WHIP this year(and are coming off an off day) while the Rangers very well might have a bottom 5 bullpen in the league. I like the Angels to win this game comfortably and am inclined to risk a full unit given the generous price.

*MLB(1u): Brewers/Padres F5 UNDER 3.5(-125)–8:40 PM CT

Blake Snell was roughed up in his season debut last week in Philadelphia, but he returns home to Petco Park tonight in a role he excelled in last season. At home last year, Snell held a 2.50 ERA, 0.95 WHIP, and struck out 13 batters per 9 innings. He’ll face a Milwaukee offense that was below average against left-handed pitching last year and holds just a .621 OPS against lefties away from home this year. With that said, I believe Brewers SP Corbin Burnes is the best pitcher in baseball. The 2021 NL Cy Young winner held a sub-2.00 ERA away from home last year and gets a favorable matchup tonight against a Padres offense that ranks just 25th in OPS vs righties this season. We’re getting a better price on the full game Under, but I don’t want to trust either bullpen given each received quite a bit of usage in last night’s game. I’m playing this because of the starting pitching matchup, so I’ll isolate the F5 and lay a bit of a premium.

*MLB(0.69u): Red Sox F5 ML(+145) @ White Sox–7:10 PM CT

White Sox SP Dylan Cease has great swing-and-miss stuff, but he is also prone to getting roughed up by good offenses. The Yankees recently tallied 6 runs off of Cease in just 4 innings despite Cease striking out 11 Yankees bats. The Red Sox struggled mightily to start the year, but over their last last 12 games, they are averaging just over 6.5 runs/game. They figured out their right-handed pitching woes in this recent home stand, and I like them to keep it rolling against an arm in Cease who has struggled in the past allowing the deep ball. Red Sox SP Nick Pivetta is in about as good of current form as any pitcher in the league. He threw a 2-hit complete game against the Astros in his last start and blanked the White Sox across 6 innings earlier this month. Across his last 22 innings, Pivetta has allowed just 2 ER’s. The White Sox have struggled mightily against right-handed pitching this season(.581 OPS vs righties at home), and I’m not going to expect this to be the spot they turn things around. Considering Boston’s current form, this is an extremely favorable price; I think this matchup swings more in their favor than this line would imply. I don’t want any part of either bullpen, so I’ll isolate the F5 and sprinkle on the Sox to hopefully win us a full unit.

Rob Vinciletti: MLB Power System + 2022 NBA TOTAL OF THE YEAR info

Tuesday card led by the 2022 NBA Playoff Perfect System TOTAL of the YEAR, an MLB 5* Diamond Cutter Blowout System that is 19-1 since 2004 and the Game 4 Perfect System side in the Late NHL. Monday card sweeps at 5-0 MLB Comp Play below.
The MLB Comp Play is on Tampa Bay at 6:40 eastern. The Rays are 4-0 off a loss and 6-0 with a total that is 6.5 or less. They fit the Powerful system below that plays on home favorites off a road favored loss despite scoring 5 or more runs and were off a prior road favored win if tonights opponent was off a homer game. These teams are 9-1 long term. Florida has lost the last 4 here,6 of 7 vs a lefty, 7 of 8 vs a team that scored 5 or more runs and 10 of 11 in games where the total is 6.5 or less. McClanahan has won 4 of his last 5 and has been solid. The only thing keeping this play from getting a high nit rating is Pablo Lopez who is pitching to a 1.87 Era. However look for Tampa to win this one late. On Tuesday the 2022 NBA Playoff Total of the Year headlines from a Huge Never Lost totals system. We also have a 5* MLB Diamond cutter Blowout System and another Powerful NHL System play in late game 4 action. Free Pick from FarleyBets: Warriors vs. Mavs – West Finals Game 4

Warriors and Mavericks fighting for loose balls.

Timmeeeee for a free pick! This is a tough game to predict – the Mavericks have their backs to the wall and need to win to stay alive, but all the Warriors have done is prove that they still have championship DNA in their blood, going 3-0 to take a commanding lead in this series. Below is my favorite play in this contest.

Chris is 62-48 (56.3%) for +9 units in the NBA playoffs – check out his premium picks to get this quality of winnings in every sport, every day, directly in your inbox!

Mavs 1Q -0.5 (-115), 1.5 units: We’ve seen this story before. A few things are terribly relevant for this game and although it may be scary taking Dallas to win at this point, for obvious reasons, there are plenty of other angles to consider. Let’s start with the most glaring: the Golden State Warriors apparently hate winning playoff series on the road. That’s been true in the past but it’s even more apparent this postseason. Let’s take a look at what they’ve done in 2 road games when they could’ve closed out the series:

At Denver, Game 4, the Warriors:

  • Were outscored 63-52 at the half
  • Allowed 56% from the field and 48% from beyond the arc
  • Allowed Jokic to score 37 points and shoot 66% from the field

At Memphis, Game 5, the Warriors:

  • Were outscored 77-50 at the half
  • Allowed 47.5% from the field and 44% from 3-point-land
  • Allowed Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson to have hugely productive games

As you can see, the Warriors played their worst defense, by far, in these scenarios. In Game 3, the table was set for the Mavericks to have a great shooting game and in all likelihood, snag a win. It just didn’t happen. Dallas was served with wide-open shots throughout the first half and just couldn’t hit a single bucket. They didn’t land their first 3-pointer until 5 minutes left in the 1st quarter, scoring only 22 points in the first 12 minutes and it probably should’ve been worse – they had only 17 points with 1 minute left. Even with how crappy they played, they still led by a 2-point margin at the end of the first half.

Luka Doncic and Jalen Brunson should lead an aggressive charge to begin this game. They’re at home, they’re obviously desperate, and they’re at their best when they’re aggressive offensively and nailing their shots with just a tad more efficiency (sarcasm intended). Efficient offense enables Dallas to settle into their half-court defense and at least attempt to slow down the rhythmic, assist-oriented offense that’s become the magic of the Golden State Warriors. The only way we can look is to expect positive regression from Dallas, at least in the opening quarters of this crucial game. Would we be surprised if the Warriors stole the 3rd quarter and ultimately closed out this series? No. They’re the better team; this is just our best bet for today. Take the Mavs early.

Premiums, 5.24

Well last night was fun…

Hard to anticipate a team scoring -6 points in the first quarter but here we are – that pretty much ruined the latter two NBA bets last night. Onto more zany shit today!
NBA Picks:

Mavericks 1Q -0.5, 1.5 units
Mavericks 1H -0.5, 1.5 units
Warriors 3Q +0.5, 1 unit
Brunson over 20.5 points (-106), 1 unit
Well we certainly can’t pick the Mavericks later in this game, not at this point, but I’m still going to pick them early. We saw them easily win the 1st half at home in game 3, only to fall again and allow Golden State to overwhelm them in the final 2 quarters. Maybe it’s the most square bet I’ve had all postseason but I’m going to take the Warriors in the 3rd QTR until it loses. Draymond Green, after their game 3 win, went on his podcast and admitted that they’ll have to weather the storm early in game 4. Already on the defensive, the Warriors know that Dallas will come out as desperate and aggressive as ever as they face elimination. And one thing we know about the Warriors is that they LOVE to win their series at home – not so much on the road. I think Brunson gets his in this one and Luka distributes a little more, so I’ll go with Brunson’s points to get over the hook tonight.

MLB Picks:

Dodgers -2.5 (+115), 1 unit to win 1.15 units
These just aren’t good matchups for a struggling Washington team that’s no longer in the same class as LAD. Against Buehler on a chilly day in DC, this should be a blowout delivery from the visiting Dodgers. An alt-line feels prime.
Phillies/Braves under 8 (-115), 1.15 units to win 1
The Phillies had their way behind Wheeler last night, but with Fried at the mound and Gibson in need of a better game, I like this contest to be slow and commanding by both pitchers.
Astros first 5 -1 (-105), 1.05 units to win 1
Cleveland is the worst lineup against lefties and Plesac has been getting whacked by big power hits all season. Astros take this early.

NHL Playoff Preview & Picks – May 23rd, 2022

The NHL Playoffs continue tonight with Tampa having the opportunity to close out the Panthers at home. Colorado will also look to build on their lead against St. Louis tonight. In the last game of that series we saw Nazem Kadri collide with St. Louis Blues starting goaltender Jordan Binnington knocking him out of the playoffs. Based off that I would expect chaos in tonight’s game so it should be a good one.

Tampa Bay Lightning @ Florida Panthers (Series TBL 3 – 0)

The Tampa Bay Lightning can sweep the President Trophy winners tonight and advance to the Eastern Conference finals for the third consecutive season. Oddly enough, the last President Trophy winners to be swept in a series were the Tampa Bay Lightning back in 2019. Looking at this series you can really analyze it a bunch of different ways. You either think that the Panthers are frauds or that the Lightning are one of the most dominant teams in NHL history. In the first three games of the series, the Panthers were held to one goal in each of those matchups. Throughout the course of the regular season (82 games) Florida was held to only one goal four times.

These teams played yesterday (Sunday) where the Lightning dominated winning 5-1. On no days rest Tampa Bay was 10-0-2 vs Florida’s record of 7-6-1 during the regular season. Given how the first three games of the series, I’m not sure Florida can generate enough offense to win this game. Andrei Vasilevskiy has been unbelievable making 30+ saves in each game of this series.

I thought this game was going to go 6-7 games but that looks to not be the case. Based on everything I’ve seen in the first few games I think Tampa Bay gets at done at home tonight. They’ve been the better team in every area and as I mentioned before Florida doesn’t seem to have any answer to Vasilevskiy.

PICK: TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING (-120)

St. Louis Blues @ Colorado Avalanche (Series COL 2 – 1)

As I previously mentioned the Blues will be without Jordan Binnington who reclaimed his starting role during the post season. He took over after Ville Husso struggled against Minnesota in the first round and led them to three straight wins. Binnington was also a massive reason the Blues were able to force OT in Game 1 and win Game 2. Without him, they’ll turn to Husso who allowed four goals against Colorado in Game 3 after coming in for relief.

If the Blues want to have a chance tonight they’ll have to follow Game 2’s strategy. St. Louis will need to rely on their defensive ability to spark their offense. They have a ton of depth up front that was on display in the first series but has yet to be as prevalent against Colorado. Even if they manage to do all that, they desperately need Husso to return to his regular season form. Without him, they don’t stand a chance against Colorado’s high powered offense.

We saw the Blues go down 2-1 in the first round before rattling off three wins. I highly doubt they’ll be able to do the same against Colorado but I do like their chances tonight. They’ve been great at home all season and I think they’re offered at some great value.

PICK: ST. LOUIS BLUES (+140)

Best of luck, and as always you can find me on Twitter @GatorBetting and Instagram @Gator_Sports_Betting.

May 23rd MLB Plays

I come into the new week +10.5u over the last 14 days and am rolling with 2 MLB plays for tonight looking to start us off strong. To receive a text when I release/add any plays, join my Telegram group!

*MLB(1u): Cubs/Reds OVER 9(-110)–5:40 PM CT

While the Reds have had a well-publicized poor start to this season, the one role they have excelled in offensively is against left-handed pitching in their home ballpark; they rank 5th in OPS(.751) against lefties at home. Cubs SP Drew Smyly carries a 1.38 WHIP into tonight’s start, and considering he held a 1.37 WHIP last year, that seems to be on brand for this below average lefty arm. Smyly is also allowing 1.59 HR/9 this year and now faces the task of pitching in one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in the league. The Cubs bullpen even being average has been a surprise, but I do not expect that to withstand the test of time. However, the Cubs are also salivating over their matchup against Reds SP Vladimir Gutierrez, who carries a brutal 8.65 ERA and 1.96 WHIP into tonight’s start. While it’s hard to sustain those bad of numbers throughout a whole season, a FIP at 7.52 is a strong indicator that Gutierrez is one of the worst SP’s in the league. As a kicker, Gutierrez has fared much worse at home throughout his brief career. While I categorize the Cubs offense as below average, they did score 16 runs across their 3 game set this weekend against the Diamondbacks. They’ll match up with another brutal bullpen in Cincinnati after Gutierrez is finished, so the path to runs is clear for Chicago tonight. Given the quality of this pitching matchup(including bullpens) and the favorable hitting conditions, I’ll play this one over the total.

*MLB(1u): Cardinals ML(-120) vs Blue Jays–6:45 PM CT

The Cardinals did some serious damage over the weekend in Pittsburgh; aside from picking up the sweep over the Pirates, they capped things off with an 18-4 thumping in yesterday’s game. Now, they’ll return back home and face a Blue Jays team that is still overvalued in the betting markets. While the Blue Jays held some of the best offensive numbers in the league last year, this has simply been a below average offense in 2022. Over the weekend, they managed to put up only 7 runs against a putrid Reds pitching staff, and overall this year, the Jays rank just 21st in OPS against right-handed pitching. Cardinals SP Miles Mikolas probably won’t be able to sustain a sub-2.00 ERA and sub-1.00 WHIP over the course of this season, but he’s catching the Jays lineup at an opportune time. Blue Jays SP Jose Berrios looks like a shell of his former self this year. Aside from the 4.83 ERA and 1.49 WHIP, Berrios is striking out just 6.15 per 9 innings, BY FAR the lowest mark of his career. Unluckily for him, the Cardinals have the second highest contact rate against righties in the league. When you pair that with the fact the Cardinals enter tonight in great current form, this shapes up to be another rough outing for Berrios. I see these bullpens as about even, but the Cardinals have a pretty significant rest advantage by nature of not having to use any back-end arms in yesterday’s blowout. I like this matchup for St. Louis and have no problem playing against a Jays team that has yet to crack the code offensively this year.

Rob Vinciletti: Monday MLB Power Play +NBA +NHL Info

Monday card has the NBA Round 3 Game of the Year backed with a 100% Playoff System and a perfect angle. In the NHL there is a Game 4 Historical system from the NHL Playoff Database that is undefeated and in Bases the lead play is a Powerful 5*. MLB Comp Play below.
The MLB Comp play for Monday is on the Chicago Cubs at 6:40 eastern. The Cubs have won 16 of 21 vs a .400 or less team, 9 of 13 as a road favorite and 5 straight on Mondays. The Reds are in a negative league wide system that has seen home dogs lose 13 of 15 times if they are off a road dog win at +190 or higher and are taking on a team off a home win like the Cubs. The Reds have lost 9 of 10 vs a lefty and 5 of 7 after allowing 2 or less runs.. Smyly goes for the Cubs and his 3.97 Era is not great but his opponent Gutierrez is pitching to an 8.67 Era and he has been hit hard of late. Look for the Cubs to take the opener. On Monday our NBA Round 3 Playoff Game of the Year headlines with a perfect system.
