Zurich Classic of New Orleans – Preview & Picks

Congrats to Jordan Spieth for winning the RBC Heritage despite his horrific putting performance. He was able to defeat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff on Sunday to capture his first win as a father.

We now move onto the Zurich Classic of New Orleans which is the only team event on the PGA Tour. The players will rotate between best ball and alternate shot formats making for some exciting golf. Course/ Tournament History:

The Zurich Classic of New Orleans began in 1938, 84 years ago. However, it has been held annually since 1958. From the events inception it has been held at a variety of courses in the New Orleans are but since 2007 it was been held at TPC Louisiana.

The event was originally a stoke play event until 2017 when it became a team event. It is also the only team event on the PGA Tour.

Zurich Insurance Group is the main sponsor for this event and has been since 2005. In 1999, it became the “Classic of New Orleans” with the main sponsor having title rights and has since remained that way.

The purse has also increased to $8.3 Million with each winner recieving — from last years event where the purse was $7.4 Million.

Cam Smith is the only player to have won this event twice since it has shifted formats. He won back in 2017 with Jonas Blixit and again in 2021 with country-man Marc Leishman. Also something to note, that since 2017, this new format has resulted in two plays, both the years that Cam Smith won.

Billy Horschel is the only player to win both formats, winning the event back in 2013 and again in 2018 with Scott Piercy. Jason Dufner won the individual event in 2012 but, finished runner up to Horschel and Piercy in 2018.

Given the recent changes to the format, no team has yet to repeat as Champions. Leishman/ Smith do have that chance this week as they are the only previous winners with the same partners.

One joke you’ll hear a lot about this week is how Ryan Palmer continuously gets some of the worlds best players to pair with him. This year he’s paid with college teammate Scottie Scheffler, who has propelled himself to the No. 1 Golfer in the World winning four of his last six starts. Palmer won with Rahm back in 2019 and played with him again in 2021 finishing seventh. In 2018, he paired up with Jordan Spieth where they missed the cut.

Collin Morikawa & Viktor Hovland (+650 – DraftKings)

These two will pair up at the Zurich for the first time and are your current favorites at +650. Both of these guys are currently ranked inside the Top 10 in the World with ranking 2nd and 5th respectively. Collin and Viktor are elite iron players both ranking inside the top 10 in terms of SG: Approach. They’re also great off the tee with the only area of concern for these two being their short game (SG: Around the Green).

Morikawa played with Matthew Wolff last year where they missed the cut finishing 3 over. Viktor Hovland played well fellow country-men Kris Ventura last year finishing T25 at 11 under-par.

Scottie Scheffler & Ryan Palmer (+900 – DraftKings)

The Worlds best and hottest golfer, Scottie Scheffler is playing with Ryan Palmer. As I previously mentioned in this article, given Palmer’s recruiting skills it’s not all that surprising. Scheffler has been nuclear in the past few months while Ryan Palmer brings the veteran presence to this team having won back in 2019. Oddly enough, that was the last time Ryan Palmer has won on Tour. Scheffler also doesn’t have a bad course history as well finishing T8 at this event in 2021 with Bubba Watson.

Cam Smith & Marc Leishman (+1000 – DraftKings)

The defending Champions will look to retain their crown at TPC Louisiana. Cam Smith has won twice on Tour this season along with finishing T3 at the Masters. Leishman has yet to win on Tour this year but, hasn’t had a bad season finishing top 10 in three of his twelve events.

Both of these guys are great approach players while also ranking well in SG: Around the Green and Putting. Leishman has the distance off the tee while Smith is a better iron player so it’ll be interesting watching them try and structure that on alternate shot days.

Patrick Cantlay & Xander Schauffele (+800 – DraftKings)

This pairing finished T11 at last years event and also played as a team in the Ryder Cup. Cantlay is coming off a playoff loss to Jordan Spieth at the RBC Heritage last week so I’m sure he’ll be looking to put that one behind him quickly. Despite failing to win on Tour this season, the defending FedExCup Champion has had a good start to the year finishing T10 in five of his nine events played. Xander on the other hand, only has one T10 finish this year despite ranking well in most Strokes Gained categories.

Xander is a great iron and short game player with Cantlay ranking better in SG: Off the Tee and Putting. This should be an interesting pairing for sure given the chemistry they’ve developed and how their skill sets compliment each other.

Premiums, 4.20

Hey All! No need to delay my official picks for tomorrow. Get these in and let’s keep winning. Let me know if you have any Qs.

NBA Picks:
  • Nets 1Q +1, 1 unit, and
  • Nets/Celtics over 226, 1 unit
    • Okay so first there’s the basic reasons why I like these two bets, which are fairly obvious, such as the Nets scoring potential, the Celtics proven prowess as the #1 offense in the NBA for a significant portion of the 2nd half of the season, and the pace that we saw in the 1st contest. Those are all legit. Here’s what’s more legit: after game 1, this game will be officiated way differently. We know how the politics of the NBA work and Kevin Durant was NOT happy about the physicality he endured. Now, do I think that’s kind of a wimpy position? Oh yes. SOFT. But he’s not wrong that officiating has been inconsistent and unpredictable. Expect the refs to favor the Nets and their offense from the onset, and expect Durant and the Nets to capitalize early. I’ll take the dog, who’s pissed and looking for revenge in game 2, and let’s hit the over while we’re at it, too.
  • Bucks 1Q -3.5, 1 unit, and
  • Bucks 1H -6, 1.5 units
    • Chicago continues to be a second half team and that was no different in game 1. Outscored 51-43 in the 1H and it felt like it should have been MUCH more, the fact that the Bulls nearly came back and threatened Milwaukee at the end won’t sit well with Giannis and his team. At home, expect the Bucks to come out explosive and expect them to overwhelm Chicago on both sides of the court. I’d favor the full game -10, too– this series really shouldn’t ever be close.
  • Durant and Giannis props – probably not a bad idea.
MLB Picks: Don’t love a lot on the Wednesday card but I like a 2-team parlay. I think both of these teams win but there ain’t shit to like about the juice.
  • Parlay Athletics ML + Mariners ML, 1 unit to win 1.92 units
    • Two home teams with two superior pitchers in a nice spot against two poor squads. Of course I could give you more details and nuances to make myself sound smarter but in the end, that’s the fucking bottom line. Let’s hit this parlay!

If you ever have any questions, message me here, on Twitter, or on Instagram. I will make myself available from 9am to 5pm every day, but please don’t expect an answer outside of those hours. I gotta shut it down sometimes. All picks are 1-5 stars based on unit size and confidence. 3 star picks are rare, 4-5 star picks are VERY rare. All plays listed are TO WIN that amount. In other words, if I say Bucks -3 for 1 unit, we’re betting 1.1 units at -110 or 1.15 units at -115 to win 1 unit.

Always appreciate all of you! -Chris

Early Premiums, 4.20

Don’t hate that 4.20 date am I right……..

Anyway, here’s a few picks I took early. Explanations in the morn:
  • Nets 1Q +1, 1 unit
  • Nets/Celtics over 226, 1 unit
  • Bucks 1H -6, 1.5 units

Preview:

Boston Bruins

The Boston Bruins have clinched a playoff spot but, are still in a battle with Washington to decide who will be the first wild card. Boston does have three points on the Capitals and haven’t looked great going .500 in their last 10 games. They’ll also be with out David Pasternak, Hampus Lindholm, and Linus Ullmark as the team has confirmed they will not be traveling with them on their two game road trip.

As previously mentioned the Bruins will be without their leading goal scorer tonight in David Pasternak. Brad Marchand does have more points than him which is why I specified goal scorer. Pasternak has been out for eight games already and will miss another two with an undisclosed injury. I’m assuming he’ll be ready to go for the playoffs but without him, their top line isn’t as nearly as good. His replacement of Jake Dubrusk doesn’t seem to have that connection on the top line which to his credit is fair given how long Pasternak, Marchand, and Bergeron have played together.

Despite the loss of Pasternak, the Bruins have managed offensively, averaging 3.30 Goals For in their last ten which is above their season average. They’ve done a great job of continuing to generate chances offensively leading to more opportunities. Their Power Play has been atrocious with the loss of their main shooter and has only three goals on their last 32 attempts.

The Bruin’s defense also has a key member out in Hampus Lindholm, who they acquired at the deadline. Lindholm hasn’t played with this team much so any additional chemistry he can build with his partner is huge.

All season long Boston has been a great defensive team ranking in the top 5 of goals against per game and shots on goal allowed per game. During their last ten games, they’ve been slightly worse in terms of goals against averaging 2.90. Their Penalty Kill already ranks 8th in the NHL but has even better in that stretch.

Given the news of Ullmark, Jeremy Swayman is likley to get the start for the Bruins in St. Louis. Despite being sent down to the minors for a bit with Tukka Rask rejoining the team, he has been the better goalie of the two. Swayman ranks 14th in the NHL in terms of Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with a +7.3. He hasn’t been great allowing three or more goals in two of his last three starts. One of those outings was against the Blues so he’ll look to redeem himself in this one.

St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues are on a roll right now winning their last 9 games! If they are able to get to 11 wins it would match their franchise record of 11 set back in the the 2018-19 season. They’ve had some big wins during stretch including an OT thriller against Minnesota who they’re currently battling it out with for 2nd place in the Central Division. As of now the Blues have are one point ahead of Minnesota but the Wild do have a game in hand. The Blues have clinched a spot in the playoffs regardless of how the season ends up so now they’re just playing for seeding.

St. Louis’ offense has certainly been the spark behind this nine game run averaging 5.40 Goals For in their last 10 games. While they have remained constant in terms of shots generated, their Shooting % has jumped to 18% which is absolutely wild and completely unsustainable. They already had the best Shooting % in the NHL but this run that their on has solidified that even more.

Rob Thomas, has been leading the way offensively with a 13 game point streak, the longest active streak in the NHL. During that stretch he has six goals and nineteen assists for a total of 25 points. Vladamir Tarasenko has also been great, scoring at least one goal in his last five games. Pavel Buchnevich, who plays on their top line with Thomas and Tarasenko also has been on a point steak himself tallying at least one in their last ten games.

The Blues have remained consistent on defense still hovering around their average goals against during their winning streak. Even with their goals against remaining unchanged, they haven’t been great giving up more shots against averaging 35.30 in their last ten. One bright spot for them has been their Penalty Kill which has only given up 1 goal against in their last 18 attempts.

Ville Husso is expected to get the start as Jordan Binnington was in net in their previous game. Husso played well against the Bruins last time out and has emerged as St. Louis’ number one guy. On the year he ranks 7th in terms of Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx) with a +17.0. He did have a bit of an off night in his last start allowing 5 to Minnesota but before then had been very good.

Pick:

  • BOSTON BRUINS/ ST. LOUIS BLUES UNDER 6.5 (-120) – BetMGM
    • The Bruins are one of those rare teams that are actually better on the road this season. They average less goals against on the road and slightly less goals for. St. Louis is much better defensively at home but, is better offensively. Last game, Swayman had an awful game and gets a shot at redemption here. The total pushed at 6 last game despite one of the top goalies in the NHL having an off night. I expect this to be a physical game where Boston looks to slow down St. Louis high powered offense. Husso is also a solid goalie and given the loss of Boston’s best forward, I don’t think they’ll be able to put up too many.

Other Picks for the Night:

  • LOS ANGELES KINGS/ ANAHEIM DUCKS OVER 5.5 (-122) – Barstool
    • While the Kings have been great defensively this season, they haven’t been as good in their last few games. On the year, the Kings have averaged about the same amount of goals for on the road and allowing more against. The Ducks also average about the same amount of goals for home and away but, are slightly better defensively at home. However, if we look at a more recent same size, the Ducks have been averaging more goals for and more goals against. Jonathan Quick will start his fourth consecutive game and oddly enough, he has struggled recently after allowing just one goal in his previous start. John Gibson who will start for Anaheim has allowed 3 or more goals in his last twenty starts.

Best of luck, and as always you can find me on Twitter @GatorBetting and Instagram @Gator_Sports_Betting.

April 19th MLB 4-Pack

An 0-2 Monday drops me to 10-12-1, -1.67u on the young MLB season. We’ve got a full slate here on Tuesday, and I like 4 plays that I’m expecting can get us back in the green. If you’d like to receive a text when I release/add any plays, join my Telegram group!

*MLB(1u): Giants GM1 ML(+102) @ Mets–2:10 PM CT

The Giants and Mets will square off twice today, and I am looking towards the Giants in Game 1 of the doubleheader. Giants SP Alex Cobb had a solid season debut against the Padres, striking out 10 over 5 innings of work. Cobb allowed less than 0.5 HR/9 last season and will have the luxury of pitching at Citi Field today. The Mets lineup is in pretty good current form, but they’ve also had the luxury of playing the lowly Nationals and Diamondbacks early in the season. Mets SP Tylor Megill has yet to allow a run through 2 starts this season, but this will be his toughest matchup to date. The Giants raked right-handed pitching last season and currently rank 5th in OPS vs righties to start off this season. Megill allowed almost 2 HR/9 last year; while he should improve that mark, I also don’t think he’s going to continue to look like Cy Young out there. The Mets might have the more well-known names in their bullpen, but the Giants had better numbers in 2021 and have carried that over into the early parts of the 2022 season. I don’t think we should be getting a plus-number with the Giants in this spot; I like them to take Game 1 of this DH.

*MLB(1u): Red Sox F5 TT OVER 2.5(-115) vs Blue Jays–6:10 PM CT

After starting the season off with 7 straight road games, the Red Sox will enjoy their 5th straight home game tonight against the Jays. We saw mixed results from them against the Twins this weekend, but they’re getting a very advantageous matchup facing Yusei Kikuchi today. Kukuchi struggled for 3 straight seasons pitching in Seattle, and his season-opening start against the Yankees doesn’t inspire much confidence that he’s going to fit well in the AL East. Kikuchi is known for untimely walks and being unable to get out of innings, which you’re just not going to get away with facing this Red Sox lineup. Kikuchi also allowed 1.55 HR/9 last season and will be pitching at hitter-friendly Fenway Park today. I expect there to be ample opportunity for this Red Sox lineup to tee off early in this game; I think the -115 price on this standard F5 TT is more than fair.

*MLB(0.69u): Cardinals F5 -0.5(+145) @ Marlins–5:40 PM CT

Marlins SP Jesus Luzardo looked incredible in his last start against the Angels, allowing just 2 hits over 5 innings and striking out 12. While that’s impressive, we’ve yet to see Luzardo carry success over from start to start throughout his career. Over 171 career innings, Luzardo has a 5.25 ERA and 1.40 WHIP. The Cardinals ranked 1st in OPS vs lefties last season and hold that same ranking early in this season, so this is a very tough matchup for a young pitcher who has “blowup inning” potential written all over him. On the other hand, Adam Wainwright is about as consistent of a pitcher as you’re going to find across the league. While he’s known to pitch better at home, Wainwright’s ability to limit hard contact should play very well in Marlins Park. He also has good numbers against the few hitters in this Marlins lineup that I would be worried about. I know the Marlins had a good weekend in their series with the Phillies and that Luzardo is coming off an incredible start, but I’m willing to back the Cardinals early in this game at a +145 price given Luzardo’s inconsistent history. I’ll risk 0.69u to win the full 1u.

*MLB(0.65u): Mariners -1.5(+155) vs Rangers–8:40 PM CT

2021 AL Cy Young winner Robbie Ray will make his home debut for Seattle tonight. While his last start against the lefty-mashing White Sox didn’t pan out the way he would’ve wanted, this figures to be a very manageable matchup. The Rangers’ offense has actually performed better than you would expect this year, yet the team is still 2-7. The Rangers pitching staff holds an ERA at 6.19, far and away the worst in the league. Jon Gray will be tasked with holding down a Mariners lineup that recorded 11-run and 7-run performances against the Astros in blowout wins over the weekend. Gray is a power-arm that has just never been able to put his skillset together, and he’ll face a Mariners lineup that’s filled with discipline from top-to-bottom. The Mariners also hold the MAJOR bullpen advantage and are coming off a day of rest, which makes me even more willing to lay the 1.5 at this price. I’ll back a Mariners team that’s in good current form and trust the Mariners pitching over the laughably poor Rangers staff.

Rob Vinciletti: Tuesday MLB Power System Play + BIG NBA,NHL Card up

Tuesday card has the A.L. Central Game Of The Month, an NBA 5* Top level 17-2 Playoff Power System and our 100% NHL Play of The Month.. MLB Comp play below
The MLB Comp Play is on SF at 3:10 eastern in game 1 of the double header. The Giants fit a Powerful Undefeated April specific system that plays on road dogs of less than 140 off back to back road wins and were not a dog in either of those wins vs an opponent off a home win like the Mets. SF has gone 4-0 after allowing 2 or less and have won 50 of 65 after scoring 5 or more runs, as well as 38-13 in game 1 of a series. NY has lost 4 of 5 vs .600 or better and 13 of 17 vs the N.L. Well shit, Draymond Green and the Warriors certainly figured out this Nuggets team – really impressive run by them on both offense and defense last night. Raptors, well, again Philly looked like the best version of themselves, even though the constant fouls called in favor of the 76ers are absolutely absurd. Happy our other bets hit and another good day in MLB – onto Tuesday, onto more wins.

NBA Picks:
  • Hawks/Heat 1Q under 56, 1.5 units and
  • Hawks/Heat full game under 219, 1 unit
    • Like we said yesterday, I see no reason why this game would start off “fast.” The Heat and Hawks played at a slow, 97 possession pace in their first contest and like we thought, little to no baskets came easily for Atlanta. Miami is bigger and feistier on the defensive end and even if the Hawks make adjustments, it’s hard to imagine their offense comes out hyper-efficient. One thing bettors tend to ignore is that tough defense on one end tends to bring out tough defense on the other. Expect the Hawks to come out just as aggressive and pesty on defense; this battle will continue and I see it starting off slow. At the most pressurized spots, this slows down and becomes a war – I like it to start and end low-scoring.
  • Timberwolves +7, 1 unit
    • Yea again, Minnesota just matches up really well against Memphis. The Grizzlies don’t thrive when they decrease their pace and change up their style of basketball, so we think the same tendencies will continue. This will only cultivate the Minnesota offense and help them stay in-rhythm. Grizzlies win at home, but the Timberwolves cover again.
  • Suns -9.5, 1.5 units and Pelicans/Suns under 221.5, 1 unit
    • Yea the Suns are just a WAY better team, especially at home, and the Pelicans just won’t be able to keep pace with them when they’re in rhythm. Booker and CP3 and then gang are made to annihilate teams like New Orleans, who play slower and rely on half-court sets to methodically win games. Not in Phoenix they won’t. The Pelicans lack of offensive efficiency and slower pace, combined with the Suns’ sensational defense, should slow this game down plenty for an under. I have it at 214 and unfortunately for the Pels, I think the many on-court mismatches reveal themselves again for a big Suns win.
MLB Picks:
  • Marlins win, 1.6 units to win 1.5
    • Luzardo over the old and crusty Wainwright? Yes. The Cardinals are in the first place in their division off of few impressive wins, but I like what we’re seeing from another Marlins team that’s very solid defensively and has the younger, stronger pitcher today,
  • Phillies win, 1.35 units to win 1
    • Gibson over Freeland all day, and those Phillies bats are due for some big time positive regression on offense, especially at Coors.
  • ATL/LAD: No Run in First Inning, 1.25 units to win 1
    • Two aces go head-to-head, ATL’s offense has been ice cold and their defense is due for a better showing. This one starts slow.

-Chris

Adding a Play

Raptors 1Q +3, 1 unit

Adding this because this is my predominant angle – the Sixers, who have not been consistent all year, are not a good ATS team at home, after a win, or in general. The Raptors are well coached and I expect them to start and end looking their best.
3 is too many points for a team that I think could be winning at the end of the first 12 minutes. Taking them early.

Lookahead Premiums

Bets we’re taking now, more detailed explanation coming later.

  • Hawks/Heat 1Q under 56, 1.5 units
    • There’s little to no reason for me to believe this game will “start fast.” The Heat are comfortable playing their style of basketball and they absolutely locked down Trae last time. Trae will do better in Game 2 but this should still tipoff with another cautious, defense-oriented feel.
  • Timberwolves +7, 1 units
    • Minnesota just matches up too well with Memphis and they’re 3 point shooting can keep them in any contest. Scary team – I think they keep it close or win again.
