Preview:

Vegas Golden Knights

The Golden Knights return to the ice for the first time following the All-Star break, which they hosted. Currently, Vegas sits in first place in the Pacific division with a two point lead over the Los Angeles Kings.

Vegas ranks 8th in Goals For per game averaging 3.35 but, in their last 10 games have struggled a bit only averaging 2.80. They do generate a lot of scoring chances with an xGoals % of 51.77%. Even with the amount of chances they create offensively, they have a +2.19 Goals For Above Expected, which is impressive. Their Power Play ranks 16th converting at a rate of 20.0%.

Chandler Stephenson, their leading scorer, is probable to return to the lineup tonight as he has exited COVID protocols and skated with the team this morning.

In their last 10 games, Vegas has been much better defensively only allowing an average of 2.60 goals against compared to their overall average of 2.96. The Golden Knights have a -5.65 Goals Against Above Expected which is middle of the road. While they rank 8th in terms of Shots on Goal Against, they have given up the most High Danger Shots Against (107). This could be an area of concern for them tonight as they face an Edmonton offense that can capitalize on those chances. Vegas ranks 17th in terms of Penalty Kill % with a 79.5% success rate.

Alec Martinez remains on injured reserve along with several other defenseman including Dylan Coghlan, Nicolas Hague, and Zach Whitecloud.

Robin Lehner will get the start for the Golden Knights with a +10.4 Goals Saved Above Expected in 33 games played. In his last four starts he’s allowed 2-2-2-0 Goals Against.

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers will also return to the ice for the first time since the All-Star break where Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl represented the team. Edmonton has had a whirlwind of a season starting red hot to now sitting in 5th and outside a playoff spot.

Offensively the Oilers average 3.31 Goals For per game but in their last 10 have only been averaging 3.10 Goals For. They rank 10th in terms of Shots on Goal with an xGoals % of 50.58%. Their Power Play remains potent as it ranks 3rd with a conversion % of 28.4%.

Defensively, Edmonton has also been worse recently averaging 3.50 Goals Against compared to their overall average of 3.29. They rank 23rd in Shots on Goal Allowed and 6th worst in terms of High Danger Shots Against (70). Edmonton also has one of the worst Goals Against Above Expected in the NHL with a +8.05. Their Penalty Kill ranks 21st with a 77.4% success rate.

Mike Smith will start for the Oilers tonight as starting goaltender Mikko Koskinen has been placed in COVID protocol. Smith is also getting over a thumb injury so it’ll be interesting to see how well he plays here. He has a -3.7 Goals Saved Above Expected in six games played.

Pick:

  • EDM/ VGS OVER 6.0 (-125)
    • Vegas is without a majority of their defensive lineup while Edmonton is without their starting goaltender. Both teams have not been great offensively as of late, the first games after a break are usually a little sloppy which creates more chances up front for both teams.
  • EDM/ VGS 1P OVER 1.5 (-155)
    • In Edmonton’s last 10 games, they average 1.10 GF and 0.90 GA in the 1P. In Vegas’ last 10 games, they average 1.10 GF and 0.30 GA. That being said, Vegas does give up more goals against on the road while Edmonton averages more goals for at home.

Other Plays of the Night:

  • Carolina Hurricanes 60 Minute Line (-150)
    • Carolina was up 3-2 in the 3rd against Toronto last night and ended up losing 4-3 in Overtime. They face Ottawa who’s also coming off a game last night where they won 4-1 over the New Jersey Devils. The Hurricanes are 1-0 on No Days Rest After a Loss while New Jersey is 0-3 on No Days Rest After a Win. I’m not a huge trends guy but Carolina is a much better team than New Jersey and should rebound in this spot.

February 8th CBB Free Play

Syracuse Orange guard Buddy Boeheim (35) smiles after scoring a 3-point basket against the San Diego State Aztecs during the first round of the 2021 NCAA Tournament on Friday, March 19, 2021, at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. Ncaa Basketball Ncaa Touranment San Diego State Vs Syracuse

Coming off a 2-0 night, I’m rolling with 5 plays for today, 4 of which are reserved for premium members. Premium plays are hitting at a 58.2% clip and have netted my members +46.8u since Sept. 2021. Click here to learn more about becoming a premium member!

*CBB(1u): Syracuse -4(-110) @ Boston College–6 PM CT

Syracuse is playing really good basketball at the moment, winning each of their past 3 games by an average of 17.3 PPG. The Cuse score the basketball at will, ranking 13th in offensive efficiency this season and averaging 78.5 PPG. Boston College will try to slow this game down, but with a defense that ranks 155th in defensive efficiency, I have a hard time seeing the Golden Eagles stopping a red hot Syracuse offense. The reason Syracuse is 12-11 falls solely on their defense, which ranks an abysmal 237th in defensive efficiency. However, I’m confident they’ll hold up against a Boston College offense that ranks just 167th in offensive efficiency and runs at one of the slower paces in the country. You need to be able to shoot from deep to beat this Syracuse 2-3 zone; Boston College ranks 314th in 3-point percentage(30.8%). Jim Boeheim’s team appears to be playing their best basketball at the moment, and I see no reason why that doesn’t continue tonight.

February 8th Premium Plays

*CBB(1u): Rhode Island/VCU UNDER 122.5(-110)–6 PM CT

This total might seem ridiculously low, but when you actually break down how these teams match up, you realize that it’s not low enough. VCU has a top 5 defense in the country and will face a Rhode Island offense that ranks just 239th in offensive efficiency. In their past 2 road games, URI put up just 51 at Dayton and then 55 at Fordham. With that said, the Rams play very solid defense themselves, ranking right around 40th in defensive efficiency. VCU has one of the worst offenses I’ve seen in a long time, ranking 309th in offensive efficiency. It can’t be said enough how poor that really is. As a kicker, neither team likes to push the pace, with URI ranking just 240th in tempo this season. Plays like this can be hard to make, but I have no doubt that the Under is the right look in this one.

*NBA(1u): Nets 1H TT UNDER 49.5(-115) vs Celtics–6:30 PM CT

Brooklyn returns home from a 5 game road trip that saw them lose all 5 of those games with an average margin of defeat at 13.6 PPG. In fact, the Nets have now dropped 8 straight games and will be without Kyrie Irving, James Harden, and Kevin Durant for tonight’s matchup. I like the Celtics to win(as you’ll see below), but without any of Brooklyn’s stars in the mix, I just don’t see where consistent points come from in this one. Boston ranks 2nd in defensive efficiency over the course of this season and are playing the best defense in the league by a wide margin over their past 3 games. Given that Brooklyn knocked them out of the playoffs last year, I suspect they’ll show no mercy on that end of the floor. I’ll play the 1H team total to avoid any garbage time, backdoor effort from the Nets.

*CBB(1u): Villanova -4(-110) @ St John’s–7:30 PM CT

Both teams enter this game with some major injury questions. Villanova’s top 2 scorers are both game-time decisions, as is St John’s’ do-it-all PG Posh Alexander. Even if every injury misfortune goes against us, I have no problem grabbing Villanova at this price. St John’s is a streaky team that the market seems to be high on due to their fast pace of play, but their only impressive conference win this season was @ Seton Hall, who was without their catalyst in Brady Aiken. Villanova is a solidified Top 10 team that ranks in the Top 5 in offensive efficiency and plays very good defense as well. They just won by double digits against a really good UCONN team at home and will be unfazed playing in Madison Square Garden, which produces little home court advantage for the Johnnies. St. John’s would have to play their best basketball of the season for them to compete in this one, and I just don’t see that happening. I’ll play against the injury overreaction and back a legitimate Final Four contender laying a short number on the road.

*ML Parlay(1u): Celtics, Nuggets, Vanderbilt(+106)–must be placed by 6:30 PM CT

The Celtics explanation is pretty self-explanatory given how I broke the game down above.

Denver is fresh off a 20 point win against the Nets on Sunday and will host a Knicks team that is playing in the worst of spots possible. This will be the 3rd game in 4 nights for New York, all of which have come on the road. They played in Utah last night and now have to travel to another high altitude spot with no rest. Adding insult to injury, there is a lot of turmoil around the Knicks organization right now(as there has been all season) with Tom Thibodeaux STILL struggling to put together a consistent rotation and publicly disagreeing with front office moves. Given the horrible spot for the Knicks, I don’t see the Nuggets having much trouble winning this one.

Vanderbilt hosts a Missouri team that is coming off an impressive road win at Texas A&M. I like playing against teams playing their second straight road game, and that’s even more true when that team is not used to winning. Vanderbilt is playing pretty good basketball right now and is fresh off a 9 home win vs LSU. The Commodores defense has been solid all season, but the offense appears to be turning a corner after putting up 75 on one of the top defenses in the country. Vandy should win this one comfortably.

Super Bowl Prop Plays

Here are a few props that are part of my portfolio for the big game.  Please note that whenever possible, I will avoid listing props where lines have moved completely out of range.  Some solid positions have been already secured, but fall into the territory that makes them unplayable at current lines.

As always, lines vary from one shop to the next.  Always try to get the best line.

  1. LA Rams to have more rushing yards vs. Cincinnati Bengals (price ranges are from -110 to -150 at present)

Rationale: While RB’s Akers and Mixon are priced about evenly, my team projections show LA likely to commit more to the run game, taking pressure off QB Stafford.  This was certainly the case vs. Arizona, when Stafford attempted just 17 passes.  But what sways me the most with this play is how LA distributed carries vs. Tampa Bay, holders of a top two rush defense.  Most teams realize they can’t run on Tampa without having a mobile QB, and pass attempts jump.  Instead, LA ran Akers 24 times.  He only ran for 48 yards, but the game plan never varied.  KC ran well vs. Cincy, but changed their strategy when the game got close, putting the ball in the hands of QB Mahomes.

Here are three other reasons I like this play.  1st, while Burrow can run a bit on his own, back-up RB Perrine gets almost no carries.  Conversely, RB Michel is projected to have 5-6 carries, and RB Henderson may be activated for this game.  2nd, LA’s run defense has shown to be better than Cincy’s not only over the course of the entire season, but also down the stretch, and certainly in the playoffs.  Finally, just based on game odds, the Rams are projected to win the game by over a field goal (therefore implying an over 60% win shot straight-up).  That could lead to Cincy needing to throw more as the game goes along, at least if one believes LA will win.

  1. Mixon under 65.5 rush yards and/or over 3.5 receptions

Mixon’s rush yards seem to be anywhere from 62.5 to 65.5.  His receptions are interesting.  One shop has 3.5, +120, a great deal.  Other shops have 3.5 laying -130 or more, and at 4, around -105.    Below are some reasons to place a wager on one or more of these offerings, depending on what lines you have access to.

Mixon is priced at between 15.5-16.5 carries.  If he runs four yards per carry, this gets close.  LA however, allows less than that.  While Cincy will want to run to take pressure off LA’s huge line of scrimmage edge in pass situations, I don’t see them using the draw play, and do see LA wanting to force Cincinnati into obvious passing situations.  In order to stop LA’s multi-talented pass rushers Cincy must commit additional resources to pass protection.   I see their TE’s and Mixon needing to block more than usual.  I have Mixon priced at 60.5, so this is only a recommendation at 64.5 or 65.5.

For receptions, obviously the goal is to find 3.5 at reasonable odds.  Cincy has two choices.  Throw shorter passes to Chase and Higgins, hoping their talent enables them to break tackles and turn short patterns into big plays, or have designed rollouts for Burrow in order to avoid the inside rush of Aaron Donald.  In case #1, Mixon can flair out for screens.  In case #2, he would also become less of a blocker.  I’m banking on Burrow going 25-40 in this game, and not trying to stay in the pocket to allow patterns to develop down field.  A wager over 3.5 receptions at -130 or less is fine.

  1. 2nd half to have more points than the 1st half (currently priced around -115, note that a tie means the play loses)

Is it safer to use a two-way line?  The ROI says no.  You have to lay -150 or more in that case, but if the 1st half and 2nd half point totals are the same, then you push the play.  I did not do the research, but another source indicated that that has happened so rarely that it is not worth it.  Expectations are that both teams will “feel each other out” at the start, avoiding being down early.  In addition, neither team tends to play a fast pace of game, with Cincy ranked near the bottom in related categories.  That often changes in the 2nd half, both due to score as well as rhythm of the game.

Other Propositions to Consider

  1. Perine over 1.5 receptions (currently priced about -105)

This is a bit of a risky prop, as Perine’s snap count is about 22-25% in the playoffs.  He gets few carries, but has been targeted six times in the last two games, catching four passes.  If you want extra action in this game, he can be a consideration, especially if you are of the mindset that Cincinnati will need to pass more to win this game.  From all accounts, Perine’s blocking is strong enough to get him into the game on some 3rd downs.

  1. Over 2.5 players to throw a pass (average price between +120 and +140)

This might be another one for action junkies, but at +140, why not?  I make this about a 45-55 proposition, so I see enough positive ROI to throw pizza money this way.  We often look at RB’s and even a WR to be the 3rd guy, but don’t sleep on Johnny Hector, the LA punter.

A word about Cross-Sport Props and Head-to-Head Props

Cross sport props are popular and can expose inefficiencies in the market.  Examples are numerous.  A player’s 4th round golf score, or the number of birdies for a player vs. number of receptions can be exploited by those who study flag locations for Sunday and weather conditions.  Soccer experts can spot low scoring or high scoring games and match them up with success.  Experts in NCAA and NBA totals can find edges (example, Auburn total points vs. WR Beckham pass yards) based on expected game flow.  Networking with others who are proficient in other sports is encouraged.

Head-to-Head props can also lead to advantage plays.  One site may list who has more receptions, player A or player B.  Another site has player A -.5 reception or even -1 reception against that same player B, often without much of a bump in the price.  I encourage everyone to study and compare offerings from place to place.

No Play on Blazers -3.5

Hi All! The trade deadline is causing some craziness and, apparently, CJ McCollum is about to be traded to the Pelicans.

So we’re officially OFF the Blazers pick. It was gross, anyway.

I Can’t “Officially” Promote Parlays, but…

But the Mavericks, Pelicans, Celtics, Hawks, and Grizzlies are ALL in pretty ideal spots. Aka, a money-line parlay makes sense here. Inevitably one of these will probably lose, but some sort of parlay with a few of these associated? Not the worst idea.

Just please, don’t overspend. Sincerely – FarleyBets

Premiums, 2.8 (13-5 in NBA Picks, 13-4 in CBB Pick the L7 days)

Well shit, I’m still reeling over the fact that the Suns didn’t cover. For those of you who didn’t notice, the Suns led by 13 points with 1:30 left in the game. Then they led by 9 points with 30 seconds left. And did they cover the -7? Nope – the game ended by a 3 point margin; unreal! But the truth is we haven’t seen too many of those bad beats this season, so I’m thankful overall. Also- how bout them RAPTORS (LFG, love them) and another undefeated day in CBB! Onto Tuesday! P.S. – all my current Super Bowl Picks are below, too!

NBA Picks
  • Lean, Suns +1
    • I realize this is an awful spot for Phoenix, but it IS the Suns. And the Sixers just love to blow these spots. I’m considering a play; let’s see where the line moves.
  • Hawks -9.5 *
    • To be clear, this goes against my power ratings. I have Atlanta as 7-8 point favorites here, but I think this will be a complete blowout. Sabonis, really Indiana’s only hope these days, seems to be caring less and less about his spot with the team, and the Hawks are in a GREAT spot after a tough loss against Dallas. All Hawks for me.
  • Celtics -5.5 **
    • This IS the Celtics we’re talking about, who are historically very hard to trust, but either way, the Nets are looking AWFUL these days and Harden may not even play, leaving 0 of the big 3 in this game. If Harden does play, I’m not sure how elated he’ll be about it (discussions of him getting traded are circulating everywhere). Don’t let me down, Boston!
  • Bucks/Lakers over 231 **
    • I love this to be a track meet. Two fast-paced teams with a lot of advantages on the offensive end, and Lebron and AD are probable in this one. I expect a ton of fast-breaks and points!
  • Blazers -3.5 *
    • I’m literally throwing up as I type this, I cannot stand the Blazers, but if there was ever a spot for them to win, here it is. For as much as Portland sucks, the Magic realllllllyyy suck, and 3.5 isn’t that many points to cover. Don’t fuck it up, Portland!
CBB Picks
  • Illinois +6 **
    • Illinois is a really good team and a tough team to stifle for 40 minutes, especially with Kofi Cockburn dominating on both ends. I like the Illini to keep this close.
SB Picks:
  • 1Q under 9.5 **
  • 1H under 23.5 *
  • Odell over 5.5 catches (+110) ** (this is great value)
  • Bengals +4 *
  • Bengals 3rd QTR +0.5 (-135) **
  • Parlay: Rams ML + under 48.5 ** (2 units to win 3.88 units)
If you ever have any questions, message me here, on Twitter, or on Instagram. I will make myself available from 9am to 5pm every day, but please don’t expect an answer outside of those hours. I gotta shut it down sometimes. All picks are 1-5 stars based on unit size and confidence. 3 star picks are rare, 4-5 star picks are VERY rare. -Chris

Premier League Free Play!

The first PL game for me did not go as planned, however did not feel like I was out of my element at all. Burnley and Watford were as advertised; two bottom of the table teams with limited offensive presence and tons of middle of the field play. Personally I thought Burnley was the better team that day, just didn’t go our way. We are now set up with a fabulous week of PL action with 20 games from 2/8-2/15. It just so happens we have the treat of enjoying Watford and Burnley in play tomorrow (2/8). Instead this time I have a different approach.

Current PL Record: 0-1 (-1 Unit)

West Ham United ML (-225) Parlayed Manchester United (-165)

1 Unit for +132

Trying a new angle of creating value here.   First match on the ticket is WHU sitting at 5th on the table vs 19th Watford. Second we have Man U who is currently sitting at 4th on the table vs last place Burnley in 20th.

First go around WHU took it to Watford 4-1 on the road. As we identified this past weekend, Watford has not really been showing a pulse. They had opportunities against last place Burnley, but could not find the back of the net. Now they have to travel on the road against a team they know dominated them last go around. WHU’s last PL match was a huge disappointment, when they all but got a point for a draw, facing MU. With a last second goal in stoppage time of the 93rd Minute MU heroically pulled out a 1-0 victory.   I am looking for a bounce back game here for WHU to make a statement and win these types of games they are suppose to stay within striking distance of the top 4 table. Match prediction 3-1.

Back at it again with Burnley at home, however I just do not see them having the firepower to compete with the likes of MU. Soccer can be a tricky game in the sense a team can absolutely dominate and still not find the back of the net. That is my only reserve with MU. They are a top 4 team but they can certainly play down to competition. First match up between these two teams, MU took care of Burnley at home 3-1 with a ML of -280. This does raise a slight red flag to me that MU is only   -165 here. The combination of weather with the rain/wind, being on the road, and the new addition of Weghorst could possibly be factors. We are well aware MU will control possession and Burnley will stack their defensive box and hope for a quick counter attack strike. I don’t think MU lets Burnley hang around. They come out quick build a 2-0 lead and Burnley may break through late in the match, but too little too late. Match prediction 2-1.
