Oregon vs Utah -3 O/U 58

This is going to be a nice title game vs the two best teams in the Pac 12.   I am very interested in seeing what happens here because Utah blew out Oregon at home, yet most people, including myself, have Oregon the higher power-rated team.  Now the question is, since Utah’s poor start in losing 3 games (two of them to smaller conference teams) how much has this team improved?  Utah has been smashing teams since the Oregon State loss and they have gotten better on both sides of the field.  Another thing to consider here is that Oregon has the better talent, and they also have more guys that will be playing on Sunday which makes you wonder if Talent prevails especially now that playoff pressure is off of them.   Utah has a slight .2 yard per play advantage here but I think that they also have had the more favorable schedule getting UCLA and the Ducks at home.   I don’t know who will win the side in this game but I think that the under has some value.   Utah’s pace of play ranks 80th in the nation at 26.9 seconds per play while Oregon ranks 74th at 26.5.  If you take away their last matchup, Oregon has held their last four opponents to 29 points or less.   Utah’s opponents all year has only averaged 21.5 points per game, and they held Oregon to 7 lowly points a few weeks back.   I think that being that this game is on a neutral field in the black hole at Allegiant Stadium in Vegas, and the fact that these two teams have seen what each other has on offense, the under is the best play.

Under 58 – 2 stars

Appalachian State vs Louisiana +3 O/U 53

This is going to be a great game between two teams that do not like each other.  Unless you have been living under a rock, you know that Ragin Cajun’s coach Billy Napier has taken the Florida job.  Now some people would look to downgrade a team in this position but not me.  I think that the team will rally around coach Napier because he is sticking with the kids to coach this game, and the team really seems to like him and understand the business part of the sport.   Now even though App State has had the harder schedule, and has the slightly better stats, I think that Louisiana kinda coasted through the year and essentially had gotten bored with the easy teams that they have played.   The Cajun’s had it pretty easy being that their side of the Sun Belt didn’t have Coastal Carolina, but they did get to play Appalachian State at home.  That game wasn’t close at all it makes me wonder why the Cajuns are the dog here once again at home.   Looking at EPA margin it looks pretty close with App State ranking 16th and Louisiana ranking 19th.   The Mountaineers have the better yards per play margin at 1.4 net to App State at only .8 but that goes back to what I said about being bored.   Louisiana has the better offensive success rate ranking 28th to App State’s 36th but the Mountaineers win on defensive success rate ranking 12th to the Ragin Cajun’s 26th.  Since these two teams played each other, App state has went on a tear by first beating Coastal Carolina by 3 points, and after that, beating a bunch of tomato cans in their division by 24 points or more.   App State has the passing advantage and but Louisiana has the rushing advantage at 4.9 yards per rush and home field can factor in here.   I think that three points is too much in this game for a road favorite for two almost equal teams especially in a championship game.  Take the Ragin Napiers for 1 last hurrah!

Louisiana +3 – 2 stars

Bonus play:  Take Baylor +5.5 for 2 stars and sprinkle the ML.   I can’t see QB Gerry Bohanon not playing in this huge game.   Last Week Oklahoma State was out-gained against Oklahoma as was fortunate to win that game among many others.

December 2nd NBA Premium Play

I started out the month of December with a dreadful 0-3 night. I thought I had made the proper adjustments in CBB, but that’s clearly not the case. For the time being, I will be focusing on NBA, NFL, and of course CFB. I’m rolling with this lone NBA play for tonight before getting geared up for the football weekend!

*NBA(1u): Knicks +2(-110) vs Bulls–6:40 PM CT

These teams have split their first two meetings of the season and are pretty evenly matched. Even so, I think the wrong team is favored here. The Knicks have had a pretty mediocre 11-10 start to the season, but they have looked better in their last two games. They picked up a 9 point win on the road in Atlanta(the Hawks have been one of the best home teams in the league over the past few seasons) and lost by 2 to the Nets in a true coin flip game. The Knicks likely feel slighted after a late call didn’t go there way in that Nets loss, and I’m always willing to trust Tom Thiboeau-coached teams in the regular season. After a very hot start to the season, Chicago has regressed over the last few weeks; they enter this game having lost 3 out of their last 5. I give New York the edge in this game because of their excellent perimeter defense. The talent is pretty even between these two teams, but I believe the Knicks play more complimentary basketball.

  • The total has gone OVER in 5 of Washington’s last 5 games.

Preview:

Washington Capitals

The Washington Capitals enter this game off an utter collapse on Tuesday. They lost 5-4 to the Florida Panthers allowing four goals in the 3rd period. However, to come to their defense, they were going through a rough stretch of games. They had beaten the Panthers less than a week prior 4-3, and then took down the Carolina Panthers 4-2.

Offensively, the Capitals have been one of the top teams this season. They have a 50.68 xGoals% which is slightly above average. However, they lead the league in Goals For Above Expected with a +14.82. Their ability to capitalize on scoring chances correlates to their Shooting % which currently ranks 3rd at 11.4%. The Capitals have the 2nd best Goals For Per 60 averaging 3.16 only behind Minnesota (3.21). Washington continues to get scoring from their depth players which has been crucial due to the injuries they’ve suffered up front. Nicklas Backstrom remains on long-term injured reserve as he’s recovering from a hip injury. T.J. Oshie was placed on IR for the second time this season after suffering a lower body injury against San Jose on November 20th. Anthony Mantha is still on IR but, they may get Conor Sheary back for this game who’s listed as questionable.

Looking at Washington from a defensive prospective, they’ve been solid with a -6.96 Goals Against Above Expected. Part of their success has been their ability to limit opponents shots as they rank 1st in Shots on Goals Allowed. The Capitals are averaging 1.21 Goals Against Per 60 which again ranks near the top of the league. Although, they did just lose Justin Schultz to IR after suffering an upper body injury vs Montreal.

Ilya Samsonov is expected to start tonight. He has a +4.5 Goals Saved Above Expected on the year through his 12 games played. However, Vitek Vanecek may get the start with a -2.4 GSAx which could be an issue. I’ll touch on this issue later.

Chicago Blackhawks

The Blackhawks have had an interesting start to the year to say the least. After going 1-9-2 to start the season head coach Jeremy Colliton and several assistant coaches were let go. After that, Derek King was called up from the AHL affiliate Rockford IceHogs to take over head coaching duties. I won’t go into it but, the Blackhawks organization has also had some off-ice issues, and I’ll leave it as that. Moving on…

Chicago ranks near the bottom of the league in most offensive categories. In terms of Expected Goals, they rank dead least with a 43.41%. The Blackhawks also rank 31st in Shots on Goal which could be an issue here tonight. Despite this, they rank much better in terms of Goals For Above Expected with only a -2.44. Patrick Kane leads the team in points with 18 through 17 games. In terms of injuries, Chicago is without Brandon Hagel and Tyler Johnson up front tonight.

Defensively, the Blackhawks haven’t been much better ranking 31st in Goals Against Above Expected with a +9.62. They don’t rank much better in terms of Goals Against Per 60 giving up 3.19 on average. This is a major issue tonight as they face a high powered Washington offense. One positive of this Chicago defense is that they have only allowed 26 High Danger Shots Against (2nd best). Marc-Andre Fleury is expected to get the start tonight. After a Vezina Trophy campaign last year, he has gotten off to a slow start with a -4.4 Goals Saved Above Expected. To his credit, he has played much better as of late and like the Blackhawks, looks to be turning things around.

Pick:

After doing some research, the Capitals beat reporters have all indicated that Peter Laviolette is not happy with the team after their loss to Florida. The Capitals rank better in almost every category on both sides of the puck. They should come out with an inspired effort here. Washington has been great at home this year, while Chicago has struggled on the road. I don’t like laying the large price on the moneyline so I’ll take them to win in regulation. Please see the fine print before placing this betas this is completely dependent on the starting goalie for the Washington Capitals.

PICK: WASHINGTON CAPITALS MONEYLINE 3-WAY (-125)

    • THIS BET IS ONLY A GO IF ILYA SAMSONOV STARTS.

Other plays for tonight:

  • TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING MONEYLINE 3-WAY (+110)
    • The Lightning beat St. Louis in Expected Goals 3.72-2.83 when they faced off two nights ago. Brian Elliot was starting but Vasilevskiy should start tonight so I like them here.
    • THIS BET IS ONLY A GO IF ANDREI VASILEVSKIY STARTS.

  • NEW JERSEY DEVILS/ MINNESOTA WILD OVER 5.5 (-125)
    • Feel free to take the over in this game at 6.0 (-105) as well, this line is moving but I’ll gladly lay the juice here. These teams have been over machines as of late and as indicated by the Devils beat reporters, they should have an inspired effort here. Blackwood hasn’t been great recently and I see this game going over the total.

Best of luck, and as always you can find me on Twitter @GatorBetting and Instagram @Gator_Sports_Betting.
