Before I get into this a quick introduction. My name is Andrew Clarke and I am new around here you can follow me on X @n0t_an_athlete. I am new to writing about betting but, I bet a lot of college football games. I love college football, I think it is the best sport in the world. There is nothing more fun then putting a little money on the line and watching some games on a Saturday in the fall.
I got 4 bets I am making this Thursday Night for the Saturday slate. A Good Team, a good team playing a bad team, fading a bad team, and an ugly underdog. I will list the best number out there out there as of the time I am writing this, be sure to shop around and find the best number.
Good Team: Texas Tech (-11) @ Houston. This line has been moving so you can wait and possibly get a better number closer to kick. Texas Tech is coming in hot 14 days after taking it to Utah in Salt Lake City. I can see this game playing out similarly as Houston does have the defense to hang for a little while but, I do not see how Houston’s offense keeps it within the number. Houston’s O-line has shown some lackluster performances pass blocking and that is exactly where this very expensive Tech defensive line thrives. Look for Tech to be able to rush 4 all day and keep Conner Weigman in check. On the other side of the ball Tech’s Behren Moroton will get the start despite Will Hammond looking like the guy. In this matchup he should be ok because according to PFF ratings Morton is most effective against the zone and that is Houston’s primary coverage scheme.
Good Team vs Bad Team: Penn State (-24.5)@UCLA. Unlike Penn State UCLA covered their first spread of the season last week in the Big 10 cellar dwellers bowl against Northwestern. This might be the closest game UCLA plays for the rest season as James Franklin is 9-4 ATS after taking a loss to a top 10 team. UCLA had the fired coach bump last week but, I am not going to give them a fired Offensive coordinator bump after they fired theirs only four games into his UCLA career. I think that move evidences this program is completely dysfunctional and they have no identity. UCLA’s offense is completely centered around Nico Iamaleaava rather it be through the air or as their primary rusher so if Penn State shuts him down they really have no other offense. I am going to give the Nittany Lions one last chance this season to cover a big number in what should be a get right game for the offense.
Fading a bad team: Western Michigan (-13.5) @ UMASS. There is not a lot of 13.5 left out there so scoop them up before they are gone. This handicap is simple UMASS might possibly be the worst team in the FBS and might have a hard time staying within any number this season. Western Michigan does not have an offense that will light the world on fire but UMASS is struggling to put a defense on the field as their defensive back field has been decimated by injuries. I had to check Sagarin rating on this one and UMASS is coming in at 207. I think I saw a few local high school teams rated higher. Western Michigan has a solid defense and should have no problem keeping UMASS to their usual low offensive output in UMASS’s first MAC conference game. Welcome to the wacky MAC Minutemen.
Ugly Dog: Kentucky (+21) @ Georgia. I do not love it but, I am tired of missing out on the trend. Kirby Smart as the head coach of UGA does not cover big spreads certainly not in conference. UGA has not covered a 20 point spread in the SEC since 2022 and Kirby since the beginning of 2023 he is 9-22-1. Kentucky always seems to give Kirby fits and he should be looking to coast here and maybe reel off a 27-10 victory so that I do not have to sweat to much.

The Vikings yards were mainly garbage in the fourth quarter.
The Buccaneers out-gained the eagles 376 to 200 yet lost 31-25. A nasty 2-0 turnover ratio and horrible special teams block punt return jailed the Bucs.
The Chargers out-gained the Giants 338 to 250 yet lost 21-18. A nasty 2-0 turnover ratio and poor third down efficiency got the Bolts.
The Panthers yards were garbage.
The 49ers yards were a lot of prevent defense from the Jaguars.
The Raiders out-gained the Bears 357 to 271 yet lost 25-24. A 4-1 turnover ratio and poor special teams got Las Vegas.
The Packers out-gained the Cowboys 489 to 436 yet tied 40-40. A 1-0 turnover ratio and poor clutch defense did in the Packers.
The Jet’s out-gained the Dolphins 404 to 300 yet lost 27-21. A nasty 3-0 turnover ratio and 13 penalties got NY.
Florida State out-gained Virginia 514 to 440 yet lost in OT 46-38. Equal turnovers at 3, but poor red zone defense and field position got the Semis.
ASU out-gained TCU 498 to 269 yet only won 27-24. They won the turnover battle 3-1 but a terrible start to the game with poor special teams hurt them.
Navy outgained Rice 455 to 234 yet only won 21-13. A 1-0 turnover ratio and field position got them from covering.
Texas A&M out-gained Auburn 414 to 177 yet only won 16-10. A 1-0 pick 6 turnover ratio did them in.
Jacksonville State out-gained Southern Miss 390 to 377 yet lost 42-25. A nasty 4-1 turnover ratio smoked em.
Marshall out-gained Louisiana 501 to 461 yet lost 54-51 in overtime. They won the turnover battle 2-1, but poor special teams and red zone defense got the herd.
UTEP’s yards were mainly garbage time so no adjustement.
The Sanderson Farms Championship is the second event of the FedExCup Fall, where players are competing to secure a spot in the top 100 of the FedExCup standings. Those who finish in the top 100 will earn full PGA TOUR status for the upcoming season, while players ranked 101-125 will receive conditional status for 2026.
Ryder Cup Connections in the Field
Fresh off Europe’s 15-13 victory over the United States at Bethpage Black, only one Ryder Cup player is heading straight to Mississippi for the Sanderson Farms Championship. Rasmus Højgaard, who went 0-2 at Bethpage and is 87th in the FedExCup standings, will compete alongside his brother Nicolai (74th), who is also in the field. Nicolai played for Team Europe in the 2023 Ryder Cup but did not make the team this year. Other participants with Ryder Cup ties include Europe Vice Captain Francesco Molinari and American assistant Brandt Snedeker.
Tournament Storylines:
Kevin Yu Looks to Repeat
Kevin Yu returns to defend his title after claiming his first PGA TOUR victory at the 2024 Sanderson Farms Championship, defeating Beau Hossler in a playoff. Yu is attempting to become the first player in more than 50 years to win the event in consecutive seasons.
Yu has had strong results in 2025, including a third-place finish at the RBC Canadian Open and fourth at the ONEFlight Myrtle Beach Classic, narrowly missing playoffs both times. He also made the FedExCup Playoffs for the first time in his career, finishing T32 at the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Currently 65th in the FedExCup standings, Yu is on track to stay inside the top 100 and retain his PGA TOUR card for next season.
Last PGA TOUR event in Mississippi?
This is the final year for Sanderson Farms as the tournament’s title sponsor. The company has supported the event since 2013 and had originally planned to step down after last year, but they had a last-minute change of heart and agreed to sponsor the tournament. Following this year’s event, the 13-year partnership will come to an end, despite their original contract running through 2026. Tournament director Steve Jent now faces the task of finding a new sponsor for 2026 and beyond, making the coming months crucial for the long-term future of the Sanderson Farms Championship.

The Sanderson Farms Championship began in 1968 as the Magnolia Classic and has since become a staple on the PGA Tour. Initially, the event was considered an “alternate” or “opposite-field” tournament, held alongside major competitions like the Ryder Cup or larger tournaments. Because of this, it typically attracted players who were not in the elite field at those marquee events. Despite its status, the tournament remained a crucial part of the PGA Tour calendar, offering players an opportunity to secure important FedExCup points and establish themselves on the tour. Throughout its early history, the event was hosted at various locations, including Hattiesburg Country Club, Annandale Golf Club, and later its current home, the Country Club of Jackson, in Jackson, Mississippi.
In 2013, the tournament secured its title sponsor, Sanderson Farms, a poultry company based in Mississippi, which helped solidify its future on the PGA Tour. This partnership significantly raised the profile of the event, and in 2019, the Sanderson Farms Championship was elevated to a full FedExCup points event and also rescheduled to September, as the second tournament of the PGA Tour season. This upgrade meant the winner would receive a Masters Tournament invitation, which further boosted the tournament’s prestige and drew a stronger field of competitors. The event has also become known for its philanthropic efforts, with proceeds benefiting the Friends of Children’s Hospital, a non-profit supporting pediatric care in Mississippi.
The Country Club of Jackson has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1914. Located in the capital city of Mississippi, the club was established to provide a premier recreational and social venue for the community. Originally, the club featured a nine-hole golf course, which was later expanded as the club grew in size and reputation. Course Guide/ Scorecard:
The Country Club of Jackson, designed by Dick Wilson, is a par-72 that presents a balanced test with four par 3s, ten par 4s, and four par 5s. The Dogwood-Azalea course at the Country Club of Jackson was designed by John Fought and Mike Gogel. “Dogwood” refers to the front nine and “Azalea” refers to the back nine.
The Country Club of Jackson measures 7,461 yards, making it the 15th longest course on the PGA TOUR this season but doesn’t play it’s true distance as longer hitters can cut corners and take more agressive lines on certain dog-legs. The fairways are narrow, averaging 29 yards wide, ranking among the 7th narrowest on TOUR, but accuracy off the tee is essential as the rough isn’t all that penal. The greens are smaller than the PGA TOUR average at around 6,200 square feet, putting a premium on precise approach shots. With only 56 bunkers—the 9th fewest on TOUR— and water only coming into play on 5 holes – the 7th fewest on TOUR – hazards are less of a factor here.
The four par 3s at The Country Club of Jackson range from 168 to 223 yards, placing a premium on precision and smart club selection. In last year’s Sanderson Farms Championship, only one hole, No. 10, played over par. on average.
Players have a fairly straightforward long iron into this green. However, a miss long or right can make for a difficult up and down. A par on this hole is a good score, and it had a scoring average over par last year.
While this is the shortest hole on the course, swirling winds come into play and can knock a high iron down. The green is protected by two front bunkers and one hidden over the left side.
The Country Club of Jackson features ten par 4s, most of which fall between 400 and 450 yards. Strategy plays a major role, particularly on holes that offer tempting risk-reward opportunities. In 2024, the two toughest par 4s were No, 16, No. 6, and No. 18, the only Par 4’s to play over par.
Is a dog-leg left where an accurate tee shot is crucial. Since it’s only 400 yards, most players will club down here and try to avoid the creek runs along the hole on the left side. On a player’s approach shot, they’ll have to navigate the two bunkers that protect the green in the front.
This is the signature hole on the course and will require two demanding shots. A swamp runs along the entire left side of the hole and crosses the fairway approximately 80 yards from the hole. If players choose the “bailout” option trees come into play and are forced to hit towards the water on their approach. In addition to the swamp on the left, the green is protected by a large bunker on the right.
There are four Par 5’s on the course: No. 3, No. 5, No. 11, and No. 14. All of these holes had a scoring average under par in 2024. No. 3 was the easiest Par 5 on the course last year with a scoring average of 0.453 below par.
This is the longest hole on the course and the toughest of the Par 5’s. Off the tee, players will try to navigate their ball between two fairway bunkers, putting them in position to try and go for it in two. If they do try and reach the green in two, they cannot miss short-left as a pond comes into play. The green itself is surrounded by multiple bunkers as well.
Players will need an accurate tee shot off the tee. The left side is woodlands, while on the right side, trees can come into play. Even if they do find the fairway, they can end up in one of the fairway bunkers. On their approach shot, they’ll have to avoid the two front bunkers.

Michael Thorbjornsen (+2200) – DraftKings
Thorbjornsen opened the season with some struggles but has found consistency since late April. Over his last six starts, he has recorded four finishes of T21 or better, including a T4 at the Rocket Classic, a strong comp course for this week, and a T13 at the Procore Championship to start the FedExCup Fall.
He teed it up at this event last season and placed T8 despite ranking 59th in SG: Approach. Since then, his iron play has made clear progress, gaining strokes in seven of his last ten starts and in each of his last two. His distance off the tee continues to give him an edge, and the putter has come around after early-season struggles. He has gained strokes on the greens in five of his last seven starts, and at this event a year ago he ranked 7th in SG: Putting.
Min Woo Lee (+2200) – DraftKings
Min Woo Lee earned his first PGA TOUR victory earlier this season at Memorial Park, a course that sets up similarly to this week’s test. After that breakthrough, his form cooled, with just one top-20 finish in his next ten starts. Recently, though, he has shown signs of regaining momentum. Competing on the DP World Tour after the TOUR Championship, Lee finished T11 at the BMW PGA Championship and followed it up with a T5 at the Open de France.
Those performances were fueled by sharper approach play and improved putting, two key areas for success at the Sanderson Farms. Lee’s length off the tee remains a major weapon, and with confidence building again, he looks poised for a strong debut at this event. The fact that he won the Texas Children’s Houston Open in his first appearance there also adds another layer of optimism.
Max Homa (+4000) – DraftKings
Max Homa will want to put the 2025 season behind him after managing only two top 20 finishes. Still, there are signs his game is starting to turn. At the first event of the FedExCup Fall, he finished T19 while gaining strokes in nearly every category.
Iron play has been the biggest concern for Homa this year, but he has gained on approach in each of his last six starts. Off the tee, he has also shown progress, gaining in four straight events thanks to improved accuracy. The putter has been steady overall, and when it spikes he tends to post strong results, as seen at both the Masters and the Procore Championship.
With his ball striking trending in the right direction and facing a weaker field this week, Homa has the potential to contend.
Patrick Fishburn (+6000) – FanDuel
Patrick Fishburn missed out on the FedExCup Playoffs, largely because of a slow start to the year, but he closed the season with encouraging form. He posted three top-20 finishes in his final six starts and added a T38 at the Procore Championship to open the FedExCup Fall.
His irons have been inconsistent overall but have shown improvement in recent weeks, and his putting has followed the same trend in a positive direction. While his accuracy off the tee has dipped, the raw distance he possesses is a key asset on this course.
If Fishburn can keep the putter rolling and continue the recent progress with his approach play, he has the upside to contend at a number like this.
Matti Schmid (+8000) – BetMGM
Matti Schmid has missed the cut in each of his last two DP World Tour starts, but he still rates well in the key areas of my model this week. His overall form is not as poor as those results suggest, though his iron play has lacked consistency and will be the main factor in determining his ceiling.
On the positive side, Schmid’s putting has been steady, and his distance off the tee gives him the ability to keep up on this course. He has also shown he can find success here before, finishing T16 at the Country Club of Jackson last year.
If he can dial in the irons, Schmid has the tools to outperform his odds.
