UFC 264 Best Bets and Predictions – July 10, 2021

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier at their weigh in on July 9.

The highly anticipated final chapter between Connor McGregor and Dustin Poirier will conclude Saturday night. UFC 264 is an awesome card full of great fights and opportunity– here are my best bets for the big PPV.

Omari Akhmedov (+140), 1.5 units: Omari Akhmedov (21-5-1) faces Brad Tavares (18-6) in the early part of the prelims and I see some great value on the underdog. These fighters have a pretty similar history against a relatively similar quality of opponent, though I’d have to give the nod to Akhmedov. The Russian lost his last bout in 2020 against Chris Weidman, which is certainly nothing to hang his head over, and he even earned a draw against Marvin Vettori back in 2017. Along the way to UFC 264 he’s beat names like Tom Breese, Ian Heinisch, Zack Cummings, and Tim Boetsch. Usually he’s a decision-machine but his most recent victory against Breese came via a 2nd round arm-triangle, a nice addition to a fighter who’s already dominant on the mat. Akhmedov brings a significant wrestling advantage to this contest and while Tavares is great at defending takedowns, a host of injuries and disparate competition (he hasn’t fought twice in one year since 2018) could spell some lag in his energy. I like the Russian to get a W Saturday.

Jennifer Maia (-200), 2 units: This one was a pretty easy pick for me. Jennifer Maia will take on Jessica Eye in a prelim battle between two long-time flyweight warriors. As far as the on-paper comparison goes, “Eye averages 3.76 significant strikes/minute at 37% accuracy. Meanwhile, Maia averages 3.34 significant strikes/minute with 39% accuracy. In short, Maia can match Eye’s typical path to victory; and, she has a distinct advantage in power and submissions.” (credit The Body Lock) That last line is an important one. Jessica Eye is a tried and true 34 year old fighter who at one time was considered one of the hottest prospects in the division. Then superior competition like Miesha Tate and Julianna Pena and of course Valentina Shevchenko showed up and it was clear that Eye couldn’t hang with the best of the best. Maia can, and in Maia’s most recent bout, she did. On November 21st last year, Maia did what few women in the flyweight class can ever attest to– she went the distance (all FIVE rounds) with one of the best UFC fighters ever in Valentina Shevchenko. Although Valentina won via unanimous decision and ultimately she was too much for the 32 year old Maia, the underdog proved she has the wind and determination to battle the world’s best. Saturday night against Eye will feel significantly more comfortable and I expect a confident and revenge-stricken Maia to impose her will. She’s the tougher, more agile, and more dangerous fighter.

Michel Pereira (-170), 1.7 units: Two of the UFC’s most entertaining fighters in Michel Pereira and Niko Price square off in a welterweight battle that shouldn’t disappoint. It looks like this will round up the prelims and if so, what a great ending to the free part of the card. This is a play on a more mature Pereira, at least what we’ve seen from his last two contests, against a very sneaky fighter in Price. Price owns a 3″ reach advantage but Pereira has the edge in height, athleticism and sheer size. The poignant flaw in Pereira’s game is that he tends to get too fancy, over-utilizing his unorthodox style to the point where it can exhaust the Brazilian and leave him an open target. Fortunately Niko Price has a similar style. The 31 year old American calls himself the “hybrid” for a reason– his long and unique presentation throws off a lot of fighters and if he can get inside early, he’s capable of a powerful TKO win via kick or punches. Pereira is on a two-fight win streak and in those last two victories we’ve seen a more calculated and efficient fighter, one who applies his superior striking and unusual movement in the right spots instead of forcing the issue. Pereira is on the cusp of becoming a main event name and I expect the 27 year old to force Price into mistakes early and often. At this point Pereira cannot afford another clumsy loss and I expect his learned methodical approach to wear down Price in what will most likely be a decision win. I’ll take Pereira for a 1 unit return.

Yana Kunitskaya via decision (+145), 1 unit: I like the way Yana Kunitskaya matches up against Irene Aldana. Aldana is a big bodied bantamweight at 5’9″ and looks to intimidate and stalk her opponents in the octagon. Against weaker foes that has worked often for Aldana, earning half of her 12 UFC wins by KO/TKO. Her wins against Ketlen Vieira, Vanessa Melo and Bethe Correia were impressive but in her most recent bout, she was out-classed by the superior boxing and fight IQ of Holly Holm. Aldana struggles to close distance in the ways that work to her advantage, often chasing her opponent around the cage and not cutting them off at the angles necessary to land a final blow. Kunitskaya won’t be tricked by Aldana’s attempts to overwhelm her either. The younger fighter at 31 years of age and in my opinion the more well-rounded, Kunitskaya should be able to pick apart Aldana with precision striking. She’s also the better takedown artist. If Kunitskaya can frustrate Aldana and stay on the move, she should be able to avoid the Mexican’s KO power. I like a dynamic showing from Kunitskaya to earn her enough points for a win.

Tai Tuivasa (-140), 2 units: I’ll keep this one short. Tai Tuivasa is one of my favorite plays on this card because he’s a very complete fighter. He’s big, quick, has fantastic kickboxing and striking, and he’s far more calculated than Greg Hardy. Hardy’s MMA game has improved immensely and it’s obvious he’s a fantastic athlete, but we’ve seen Hardy lose his wind and lose his control in fights before. Tuivasa, who looks to maintain his giant size and not cut too much weight to be on par with Hardy, should be able to stay out of his opponent’s range and use his fiery leg kicks and quick combinations. The less dynamic Hardy will struggle to hang with “Bam Bam” Tuivasa, who (by the way) has won 10 out of his 11 bouts via KO/TKO. Hardy is entertaining and controversial and that’s the biggest reason why he’s in this spot on the main card. Unfortunately for the former NFL standout, I think he’ll be significantly out-classed Saturday night.

Conor McGregor wins inside distance (+125), 1.5 units: If we’re going to bet on Conor, we might as well bet it inside the distance. The superstar Irishman seems to be in a different state of mind entering this trilogy main-event and arguably the biggest bout of the year for Dana White’s juggernaut company. Speaking of Dana, he had some strong words to say about his MVP: “There’s two things that Conor McGregor loves: he’s obviously incredibly competitive and loves to fight, and he loves money. There’s a ton of both at stake if he wins or loses on Saturday night. If he wins, he’s in line for a title shot, he could become the world champion again. I just think those are the things he loves and he’s not ready to walk away from either one of ’em yet.” (via Brett Okamoto) For anyone in support of McGregor, our only concerns lie with how motivated he is. Last time he faced Dustin we didn’t see the same brash, stylish, and temperamental Conor we were all used to. Conor was at ease, friendly, even complimentary of his opponent. All smiles, little gusto. But Conor is holding himself noticeably different this time around. It’s almost as if he’s forcing the issue– at the press conference he was just yelling belligerent comments, more clumsily than usual, and to Poirier’s credit he seemed rather unaffected.

But the issue for Dustin is that a motivated Conor is probably the better fighter, at least according to this guy. Dustin deserves a ton of credit for what he’s accomplished up until this point. He’s earned tremendous wealth for his family, shocked the world with big wins against McGregor, Hooker and Gaethje, and his only loss in the last four years was to arguably the greatest UFC fighter of all time in Khabib Nurmagomedov. Dustin is a considerably better striker than his younger self and we saw that clear as day in the rematch with Conor back in January. Once Dustin found his range and off-set McGregor’s balance with those leg kicks, there wasn’t much the Irishman could do and Poirier put him to sleep quickly in the second round.

Still, despite all that Poirier has achieved, this is another walk in the park for Conor. He thrives under the biggest and brightest lights and I like his decision to not bring his family. It’s his attempt to reignite the animal within and while he may be trying a little too hard to show he’s still got it, an angry, calculated, cold-hearted Conor may be too much for Dustin to handle. Poirier seems very calm, almost too calm, and I think that could hurt him in this contest. McGregor will look to be the aggressor and attack from the opening bell. If this fight goes beyond 2 rounds I favor Poirier; I just don’t think it’ll make it that far. Conor is a dynamic fighter with a lot of tools in his arsenal. We forget just how rangy and versatile his combinations can be. I’m betting that the pride of Ireland brings the heat and reminds the world once again why he’s still one of the most dangerous fighters on the planet.

G1 Belmont Oaks & Derby Invitational – July 10, 2021

Belmont Oaks

The Belmont Oaks is one of three stakes on the final Saturday of the Belmont spring/summer meet, including the Grade 1, $1 million Belmont Derby Invitational, first leg of the Turf Triple series for 3-year-olds; and the Grade 3, $150,000 Victory Ride, a 6 1/2-furlong sprint for older fillies and mares.

Inaugurated in 2019, the Turf Triple series for fillies begins with Saturday’s 1 1/4-mile (2,000 meters) test on the Belmont inner turf. The series continues at Saratoga Race Course on August 8 with the $700,000 Saratoga Oaks, held at 1 3/16-miles (1,900 meters) on the Saratoga lawn; and concludes with the $700,000 Jockey Club Oaks at 1 3/8-miles (2,200 meters) on the Belmont turf on September 18. – Paulick Report

  6. Nazuna, John Velazquez (16-1)
  7. Plum Ali, Joel Rosario (6-1)
  8. Gam’s Mission, Adam Beschizza (10-1)

Betting Preview:

CON LIMA enters the Grade 1 Belmont Oaks with two Grade 3 Stakes wins to her resume (Wonder Again Stakes & Herecomesthebride Stakes). Back in March she finished fourth in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. In 2021 she seems to be in great form winning four of her six starts. PLUM ALI took second to CON LIMA back in Wonder Again Stakes and looks for redemption here. She won the Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes back in 2020 but has yet to find the winners circle in 2021. The good news for PLUM ALI is that her speed figures have been improving which bodes well for her here. SANTA BARBARA also enters this race winless in 2021 but coming off a second place finish in the Grade 1 Al Wasmiyah Stud Pretty Polly Stakes overseas. This will be her first race on American soil. SPANISH LOVEAFFAIR is another contender here running her best speed figure last race in the Grade 3 Regret Stakes where she placed second to GAM’S MISSION. SPANISH LOVEAFFAIR has failed to win any of the stakes races she’s entered. GAM’S MISSION enters this race a winner of her last three. She took a step in class in her last race and was able to come out on top, let’s see if she can do it again here. CIRONA ships in from France for this race coming off two Grade 1 losses. She has the most experience out of any horse in these Grade 1 races so we’ll see if she can put that to use and have better luck in the States.

Betting Preview:

In an international field where we have 3 year old’s who are looking for their first Grade I win. BOLSHOI BALLET, who finished seventh as the favorite last out in the Group 1 Epsom Derby, will look to give O’Brien a second triumph in the Belmont Derby. BOLSHOI BALLET has run all six of his previous races on turf however, this American turf is slightly different which will provide a new experience for him. DU JOUR comes into this race in great form winning his last three races including the G2 American Turf. He’s the only horse in this field to have a Grade 2 win under his belt. Another horse in great form is CELLIST. He won his last race at Churchill Downs in the Audubon. HARD LOVE is anther contender that comes into this race winning three out of four career starts. SAINTHOOD enters the Belmont Derby off a Grade 3 win in the Pennine Ridge Stakes at Belmont back on May 29th. He raced earlier this year in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby where he would finish 11th. SAINTHOOD moves back on the turf where’s he performed better. PALAZZI has had the most starts out of any of the horses in the field. He won the Texas Turf Mile back on January 31 of this year. His most recent races include a 2nd place finish in the Grade 3 Transylvania and a fifth place finish in the Grade 2 American Turf (DU JOUR winner).

MLB Picks and Predictions – July 9, 2021

Toronto's Alex Manoah on the mound.

Well the ups and downs of major league baseball continue to throw us for a loop but we’re still here, even because of our plus money picks and ready to take advantage of some more opportunity. Is it me or does it feel like there’s an abundance of good value on the card today? Always makes me pause when it’s baseball! Onto the picks–

White Sox -1.5 (+105), 2 units and CHW/BAL Over 10 (-110), 1.5 units: It’ll be swampy, hot and humid in Baltimore today and this feels like another ballgame where the O’s will get whacked. The White Sox had a June slump but seem to be on the mend, winning 6 of their last 9 contests and scoring a ton of runs in the process. Dallas Keuchel (4.48 ERA, 1.39 WHIP over 90.1 innings) isn’t a guy we love to get behind but his stats at Baltimore aren’t quite as insufferable, owning a 3.32 ERA in 3 career starts at Camden Yards. The Orioles will start Jorge Lopez (6.02 ERA, 1.60 WHIP over 80.2 inning), who along with Matt Harvey leave us questioning how these Baltimore pitchers are still playing major league ball. They’re bad. I like the over and I love the White Sox to win big.

Blue Jays (+110), 1.5 units: Alex Manoah (2.70 ERA, 1.01 WHIP over 36.2 innings) gets another start for the blue birds and I’m not sure why Tampa is getting the love here. Sure they’re at home and Shane McClanahan (4.18 ERA, 1.23 WHIP over 56 innings) has a big arm and a ton of strikeouts to go with it, but the Blue Jay bats are worth getting behind. Tampa’s are not. We also think Toronto may have the better pitcher today. We played on Manoah early, which wasn’t always financially savvy, but he’s had to grow into his role and his command and confidence are clearly starting to show. Manoah has only allowed 1 run in his last two starts (including a 3 hits/0 runs showing over 7 innings against Tampa on July 2) and 9 runs in his last five. I’ll play on the big guy from Florida to limit the pedestrian Rays’ offense and a plus money win for the away team.

Reds (EVEN), 1.5 units: Let’s forget about the profiles of these pitchers today. Eric Lauer will go one on one with Cincinnati’s Wade Miley as the Reds continue to chase Milwaukee for the NL Central title. On paper these pitchers are pretty even. Good, not great. Commanding in spots. Eric Lauer doesn’t have a good history against the Reds, though. The Brewers have gotten by and stayed in the division lead thanks to the exceptional pitching of Woodruff and Burnes and most of their relievers. It sure as hell isn’t because of their offense, which continues to show unpredictable and unreliable results. Miley has his volatility too but he’s been stellar on the road, allowing only a .195/.251/.296 profile this year. The series is tied at 5-5 on the year as these two rivals reach the mid-point of their 2021 battle. The Reds have the bats and an opportunity to blast Milwaukee without the Brewers’ best throwers. I’ll take Cincinnati.

MLB 7/9/21 Friday Freebies – Sports Investing

FT. Blue Jays vs Rays -127 O/U 8.5

This should be a good matchup of 2 divisional rivals that are both over .500 for the season.   Tampa has a huge 5.5 game lead on Toronto and I have to imagine that want to keep it that way.   Alek Manoah takes the helm for the Blue Jays.   I am calling his 2.70 ERA fake news right off of the bat being that his FIP is 4.46 with a WHIP of 1.24.   Shane McClanahan is pitching for the Rays with an opposite situation where is ERA is 4.18 and his FIP is 3.87 and a 1.27 WHIP.   Now Toronto is the better hitting team and especially as of late but the Rays have the 3rd best Bullpen FIP in the league compared to 15th for Toronto.  McClanahan is a lefty and even though Toronto is good against lefties, they are actually hitting better vs righties.   Finally, since May 1st, Toronto ranks 1st in batting average with runners in scoring position and first in BABIP or batting average on balls in play.   They are a regression candidate in my opinion which means that they are mispriced right now in the market and this “could” be a game that it shows.  I’ll grab the Rays at the short favorite.

Rays -127 – 2 stars

Phillies vs Red Sox -127 O/U 11

The Phillies just got done taking care of some business against a shell of a Cubs team last night.   Now they get to continue their road trip to Boston where the balls have been flying.  This total is pretty big here and when you look at the numbers, it’s easy to see why.  Let’s look at these teams.   Boston is the better hitting team ranking 9th in wRC+ to Philly’s 15th.  Boston has the better bullpen ranking 10th to Philly’s 25th in FIP.  Both pitchers Velasquez for the Phillies and Garret Richards for the Red Sox are equal in FIP in the 4.8 range.  Lastly, Boston had a day off yesterday while Philly had to finish off the Addison street chokers.   Take the low price on the Red Sox and maybe grab the run line.

Boston -127 – 1.5 stars

Boston -1.5 +146 – 1.5 stars

NY opened well over 200 but the line has come down some here and we are willing to lay the number as the Mets fit the perfect system below that play on Any home team since 2004 off a home loss vs an opponent like the Pirates in this case that are off a home dog 140 or higher loss and scored 4 or less runs despite getting 10 or more hits. The Pirates are 1-6 vs the Mets and have dropped 47 of 60 on the road vs a winning team. They have dropped 5 of 6 on the road with Brault pitching. The Met are 8-2 vs Central division teams and 6-1 as a home favorite off a home loss. They have T. Walker going and he has won 11 straight home starts dating to last year. Make it the Mets. NBA Finals Game 2 Pick and Prediction – July 8, 2021

Bucks vs. Suns in game 1 of the NBA Finals.

Our first night betting the NBA Finals was a good one– our picks went 3-0! Hoping for more of the same as we’ve seen these two elite teams and their tendencies all year. If you ever have any questions or you’re interested in my premium picks, hit me up on Twitter!

Bucks 1st QTR +1.5 (-115), 1.15 units and
Giannis over 42.5 P/A/R (-120), 2 units and
under 220.5 (-110), 2 units:

Even though this is only the second game of the NBA Finals, it already feels more pivotal. The Suns and Bucks each came out excited and confident in the 1st quarter of game one, scoring 56 points and playing at a hyper-aggressive pace. They also scored a combined 62 points in the third quarter and 55 points in the fourth. While I expect some soaring offense in spurts tonight, two of the NBA’s best defenses will make significant adjustments in game two. Giannis and his bullish energy in the front court, along with Middleton’s constant infiltration and execution of mid-range shots, could spell deadly results for the Suns tonight. The last thing Phoenix wants is to let this game go back to Fiserv Forum all tied up at 1-1. Expect more clamps from the Suns and expect the same thing from Milwaukee. The Bucks can’t allow Ayton and Paul and Booker to all have big games again. The Suns “big 3,” and it may be time to start calling them that, combined for 81 of their 118 points on Tuesday. That’s 69%! The Bucks cannot continue to allow that sort of production from Phoenix’s stars. I’m on the under in this one.

When we review the statistics from game one, nothing really jumps out in the Suns’ advantage despite the fact that they beat Milwaukee by double-digits. Sure they were worlds ahead of the Bucks in free throw percentage (Crowder ruined a perfect free throw shooting game when he missed his second shot at the charity stripe in the game’s final minutes), but that hasn’t spelled disaster for Milwaukee in the past. The reality is, despite how closely fought Tuesday’s game was, the Suns were just more efficient and more effective in those intangible ways that we often dismiss. They were more clutch, more poised, more disciplined on defense, and they never allowed the Bucks to gain momentum. I lean the Suns -5.5 once again but I won’t bet it since I expect game two to have a different feel– less celebratory and showy, more gritty and contentious. And that’s another big reason why I like the under. I do think the Bucks will come out much stronger in the first quarter, though. In a game this important, I’ll take the +1.5 all day.

Giannis’ props are on the rise and they should be. Usually his P/A/R prop is over 50 but the books are still anticipating he’ll have some limitations in game two. I was anticipating that in game one, but Giannis didn’t look very limited at all. The Greek-freak was as aggressive and agile as always. He asserted his strength in the front court, drove defenders out of his way with terrifying ease, and was just as imposing and problematic on defense. A P/A/R prop this low is a gift and it’s not one I can pass on.

Game one was good; I think game two will be better. Good luck in your bets tonight!
