MLB Picks and Predictions – May 19, 2021

Max Scherzer, the Nationals' ace, on the mound.

Our leans went 3-1 yesterday (follow me on Twitter if you don’t already), but ultimately we took a day off and I don’t count leans into my record so alas, we’re back and looking for more official wins today. Onto my picks! P.S.- check out my NBA Eastern Conference Playoff Preview podcast released yesterday (Western Conference will be out today).

White Sox win (-140), 1.4 units and White Sox/Twins over 8.5 (-120), 2 units: Two separate bets. When there’s two pitchers I absolutely can’t trust and don’t see any signs of positive regression against two teams that are above-average at bat, it’s an automatic over for me. Minnesota’s lineup has been repairing itself over the last few weeks. Once near the bottom in many categories, they’re now a top 10 offense in runs, hits, batting average, and slugging %. Unfortunately that doesn’t always equate to wins, and the White Sox are responsible for many of those Ls, but they’re definitely delivering more behind home plate. The 34 year old right hander Matt Shoemaker (6.62 ERA, 1.44 WHIP over 34 innings) gets the call today for the Twins. Among the many areas where Shoemaker needs to improve, he’s really struggled to prevent hard contact (2.65 HR/9 innings) and keeping hitters on base (66.7% LOB). I don’t love his chances today against a White Sox offense that may be the most consistent in baseball this year. The up and down Lucas Giolito (4.97 ERA, 1.30 WHIP over 41.2 innings), Chicago’s 26 year old 5 year starter who stands at a mean 6’6″, is getting sent to the mound Wednesday and he’s still tough to figure out. He’s had a few exceptional showings this year, notably against the Indians and Royals (not that impressive), but always seems to flounder in the games that follow. He suffers the same command setbacks as Shoemaker. The White Sox have the better team and bats so I’ll give them the edge, but I love the over more than anything here.

Giants win (-125), 1.5 units: I think the ol’ ballclub from San Francisco just may get another series win against Cincinnati. One of the hottest hitting teams in MLB looks awfully vulnerable when they line up against a team with elite pitching like the Giants, and it looks like the Reds may get strong-armed again here today. Wade Miley (3.69 ERA, 1.05 WHIP over 39 innings), a regression candidate for me, is up today for Cincinnati. I think he’s overperformed. According to a blog on FanGraphs, Miley’s “zone rate isn’t up, so the increased walks are based on players chasing more. In 2012, when he pitched really well and avoided walks, his zone rate was 45.8% and this year it is 32.6%. He doesn’t get a ton of swinging strikes, he isn’t getting that many called strikes (his CSW is 25%, which is below league average), and I think this is all smoke and mirrors.” Zone rate is the percentage of pitches that go inside the strike zone as opposed to being deemed actual strikes. Of course when you deliver a no-hitter like Miley did 2 weeks ago your stock tends to rise, but his velocity has been decreasing and he got a tad exposed at Coors field in his last outing. I’m fading him today. Kevin Gausman (1.84 ERA, 0.84 WHIP over 53.2 innings) is on the dirt for San Francisco and he’s been ultra-consistent this year. Averaging 6.65 innings per game, in 8 starts there was only one contest where he allowed more than 1 run. You guessed it– it was against the Reds. While that might turn some away, it turns me towards. I love Gausman in a revenge spot here today and for another Giants win.

Nationals (-155), 2 units: The Nationals have gone cold at Wrigley Field and their bats are suffering from the same issue as always– failing to turn good contact into points. Of course Lester and Corbin aren’t the best pitchers to provide support, and that’s a big reason why Chicago leads this series 2-0, but I think we can count on Max Scherzer to deliver today. Jake Arrieta (4.10 ERA, 1.23 WHIP over 37.1 innings) mans the dirt for Chicago Wednesday and it’s the same story as always for the ol’ wily vet. Arrieta has seen some run value improvements (-2.5 on the year) but overall he’s the same guy, displaying a FIP that’s clearly higher than his ERA (5.14), allowing above average hard contact (1.69 HR/9 innings), and demonstrating mediocre to slightly above-average stats in other areas. Max Scherzer’s (2.10 ERA, 0.76 WHIP, 90.6% LOB over 51.1 innings) recent start, where he zipped 14 strikeouts in the Bronx, shows that the 36 year old still has plenty left in the ol’ cannon. The Cubs’ bats have been advantageous and consistent lately but they’re due for a let-down game. The Nats have lost 3 of their last 4 and will want to avoid dropping to 0-3 in this series; they need this win more. I’m all over Natitude!

Cardinals -1.5 (-105), 2 units: This is a rather square pick but so be it. How could I not love Flaherty in this spot? The Cardinals ace, Jack Flaherty (2.47 ERA, 0.95 WHIP over 47.1 innings), has a 7-0 start to 2021 and continues to be a workhorse for his team. As reliant as ever on his four-seam and slider, some posit that Flaherty is a glaring negative regression candidate. I don’t see it that way. What I should say is while that may be an issue as the season wanes on, I don’t see it being an issue today. Flaherty’s style allows him to control games, especially against bad offenses, and to manipulate hard contact. No team in MLB is worse in runs per game or slugging % than the Pittsburgh Pirates. Forget about Trevor Cahill (5.97 ERA, 1.41 WHIP over 34.2 innings), who gets the start today for Pittsburgh, the Pirates bats are cold and they’ve been owned by St. Louis, losing all 4 games this season by more than 1 run (by margins of 4, 7, 3, and 3 to be exact). Better offense, better pitching, better team: I expect another big win from the Cards at home.

NHL Preview & Picks – May 18, 2021

The NHL Playoff’s are officially underway and have been wildly entertaining so far. We have three matchups tonight that should continue that trend.

New York Islanders (+115) @ Pittsburgh Penguins (-135)

The Islanders enter Game 2 of this Series up 1-0 after Palmieri’s OT winner. It was back and forth all game, with both teams giving up leads, leading to that wild finish.

We have the same goalies starting as in Game 1. Ilya Sorokin has been confirmed to be the starter tonight for the Islanders, as Varlamov is still out. Sorokin faced 42 shot attempts in Game 1, stopping 39 of them for a .929% SV. In net for Pittsburgh tonight we have Tristan Jarry, who struggled to say the least, in the first game of the series. He gave up a pair of questionable goals, that were ultimately the difference maker.

Even though the Penguins did lose Game 1, they still had an better xGF (5 on 5 Situations) than the Islanders (2.62-1.77). The line tonight’s game is -135 (PIT) which is 10 cents higher than the first game of the series. Pittsburgh hopes to get Malkin back tonight, who’s a game time decision. The public will be on Pittsburgh tonight as they look to rebound at home where they have been great all season. The Penguins average 1.28 GF at Home in the 1P compared to the Islanders who average 0.66 GF Away. With the Pens being down in the series, they should come out motivated and go up in the first period.

Pick: Pittsburgh Penguins 1P -0.5, +165 (Risk 1.00 Unit)

Tampa Bay Lighting (-115) @ Florida Panthers (-105)

In what might have been the most exciting playoff game of the post-season so far, the Lighting of Tampa Bay battled back late in the 3rd period to win 5-4. The return of Nikita Kucherov made a huge impact for Tampa as he picked up two goals and an assist.

Tampa Bay is sticking with Andrei Vasilevskiy in net tonight, after picking up the win in Game 1 behind a .897 SV%. The Panthers are switching things up tonight, rolling with Chris Driedger tonight who has outplayed Bobrovsky (Game 1 starter) all season. Driedger faced the Lighting three times this season going 2-0-1 with a 2.33 GAA.

The difference in Game 1 was the Lightning’s powerplay, where they picked up 3 of their goals. The other major issue for Florida, was goaltending. They addressed this issue by starting Driedger tonight. Now, it’ll be interesting to see if that can fix their penalty kill. Florida has shown they can stick with the defending Stanley Cup Champions all season, so you can’t dismiss them in this series after giving up a lead in Game 1. One major positive for them was they did have a better xGF than Tampa on 5-5 play (1.73-1.42) in the series opener. The line for tonight’s game is -115 (TB) which is shorter than the prior game of -125 (TB). I have this game as a pick ’em so I like the price on Florida tonight especially with Driedger in net and a chance to even up the series at home.

Pick: Florida Panthers ml, -105 (Risk 1.05 Units)

Minnesota Wild (+150) @ Vegas Golden Knights (-170)

The first game of this series featured two of the best goaltending performance’s I’ve recently witnessed. Cam Talbot stopped 42 shots in an overtime win, while Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 29 out of 30 shots.

The goalies for tonight’s game are expected to be the same as in Game 1. Cam Talbot (not confirmed) has played well against Vegas this season but never as well as he did in the series opener. Talbot picked up 3 out of 4 wins vs VGS this season with a 3.26 GAA in those games. Vegas has been rotating goalies all year but, they stick with Fleury here.

The betting public will be heavy on the Golden Knights tonight as they have been all season long. Vegas is the better team in this matchup, but it’s all about the line that they’re offered at. The line in Game 1 closed at -150 for Vegas but is currently around -170. This line has indicated that Max Pacioretty, a game time decision, is likely to return and provide a big boost for the Vegas offense. The Minnesota Wild had a 2.06 xGF% (5 on 5) in Game 1 which was really close to the Golden Knights xGF% of 2.11. However, Vegas had a team Corsi of 60.19% compared to the Wild’s 39.81%. The moneyline for Vegas is just too large of a number for me to lay especially with how Game 1 went. I think the Golden Knights in regulation provides some value if Vegas can capitalize on their chances, which they have failed to do this series.

Pick: Vegas Golden Knights in regulation -0.5, -120 (Risk 1.20 Units)

Year to Date Record: 4-5 (-1.70 Units)

Playoff Record: 1-0 (+1.00 Units)

MLB 5/18/21 Tuesday 2-Pack – Sports Betting

Pittsburgh vs St Louis -122 O/U 7.5

The Pirates just got off of a decent series where they split at home with San Francisco.  They were trailing in every game at some point and then dominated in the 9th innings in the end of two of their games in this four game series.   The Cardinals are coming off of a brutal sweep courtesy of the Padres and will be looking to regroup here at home.   JT Brubaker is a decent pitcher for the Bucs, and he will take the mound having a 4.12 FIP this year.  John Gant is pitching for the Cardinals sporting a 4.35 FIP which isn’t too shabby.   Gant is the better pitcher considering that he had better numbers in the previous years and he also only allowed 1 earned run the last time he faced the Pirates in Pittsburgh.  Pitt ranks 28th in wRC+ and St. Louis ranks 19th.  Take the Cardinals for a bounce back win.

Cardinals -122 – 2 stars

Chicago White Sox vs Minnesota Twins +102 O/U 8.5

Last night these two teams played each other and the Sox scored a massive 16 runs to the Twins 4.  The Twins are a team that has been quite hard to figure out this year and they currently rank dead last in the division.  The White Sox are a little easier to figure out in that you do not bet against them vs left handed pitching.  The good thing for Minnesota is that righty Michael Pineda is pitching and his ERA isn’t terrible vs Chicago at 3.38 over 61 innings.   The White Sox also have an ace up at the mound in Lance Lynn who is boasting a massive 2.29 FIP and a 1.3 ERA over 34 innings this year.   The wind is blowing in from right field making it harder for the left handed batters to hit it deep vs these right handed starting pitchers.  I think there is some good value on the under in this game.

Under 8.5 1.5 stars

NBA Play-In Tournament Predictions – May 18, 2021

Wizards teammates celebrating together after another big win.

It’s day 1 of the NBA Play-In Tournament games and even though I don’t love the concept, it gives us more excitement, more to watch, and best of all more ways to win money! Look for my NBA Playoff Preview podcast coming out later today, where I’ll breakdown every team in the postseason and their chances of making the NBA Finals. Here are my best bets for Tuesday’s action:

Hornets +3 (-110), 1.5 units: The Hornets are not a great team but they do a lot of things well. They’re mid-tier in most categories but I think they’re plenty productive enough to keep this game close. If there’s one area where the Hornets really thrive, it’s in assists. They’re 8th overall in assist ratio, which measures how many possessions/scores end in an assist, which is a good indicator of how great they are at executing team basketball. Since no one player is electric enough to hold up their roster (Rozier has been great in moments), they rely on a slow-paced, methodical passing attack to break down their opponent’s defense. Lately the Pacers’ defense has been anything but stifling so I don’t see Charlotte having any issues getting points tonight. This is a big spot for LaMelo Ball in his first playoff game and it’ll be interesting to see how he handles himself. He’s certainly been a nice sparkplug for his team since he’s returned.

In most ways, the Pacers are clearly the better team in this contest. They’re one of the quickest teams in the NBA at 5th in pace, they’re 14th in offensive efficiency and 11th in defensive efficiency. That last stat may be a bit skewed, however. While they are 6th in points per game, they’re 25th in points allowed. That figure has only inflated towards the end of the season and their defense could be a significant problem tonight. They’ve also been plagued by a litany of injuries. Myles Turner and TJ Warren are out, Lamb could be out again tonight, and Sabonis and Brogdon are still banged up.

The Hornets aren’t a deep roster but they’re plenty healthier than Indiana. Their showing on Sunday was a disappointment overall but they found a way to limit the Wizards’ output for most of that matchup. If they can limit Indiana at all, and I think they can, I don’t think the Pacers can or will overrun the visiting Hornets. This should be a hard-fought, close game between two similarly built teams and I’ll gladly take the dog when that’s the case.

Wizards win (+115), 1.5 units and Wizards/Celtics over 232.5 (-110), 1 unit: Two separate bets, although it could make a fine parlay too. This is a tale of two teams going in opposite directions and I think both of those tidal waves keep growing tonight. Although few “experts” are giving the Wizards a chance to do anything in the postseason, the fact is they were one of the best teams in the association to end the season. According to SB Nation, “over the past 24 games, the Wizards have a net offensive rating minus defensive rating of +5.3 points per 100 possessions.” That’s a better rating than 24 NBA teams. Only the Jazz, Clippers, Suns, Bucks, and 76ers were better. The Nuggets, for example, fell below the Wizards’ rating at +5.0 points per 100 possessions. The Wizards also finished the season 17-7 in those last 24 games. Mostly led by Russel Westbrook willing his team to wins through triple-double after triple double, the Wizards are really hard to contain when they’re in a flow-state (and Russ is a savant at getting them there). It was clear Bradley Beal wasn’t 100% in their last game against the Hornets, but it may take an act of God to keep him out today. Can the Celtics stop the electric and hyper-paced offense of Washington tonight? We think not.

It’s not all bad news out of Boston. The Celtics steadily improved on defense down the stretch. Throughout the year they were rated as one of the worst defenses in the association, but they finished 15th in defensive efficiency and 11th in points allowed. Their offense and skill-players have been inconsistent, but they’ve done enough to push their team to earn the 7th seed in the East. Considering how volatile their season has been, that’s not a bad result. Still, the Celtics were reeling in May. Losers of 5 of their last 6 games to teams like the Heat (twice), the Knicks, Bulls, and Cavs, Tatum and company couldn’t find their mojo without Jaylen Brown in the lineup. Brown had arguably his best year yet as a Celtic, averaging 24.7 ppg and 6 rebounds per game. The loss of Brown means more pressure on Tatum and his supporting cast. Kemba Walker has had nice moments this year but he’s dealt with injuries on and off and he’s been too inconsistent. Marcus Smart is a veteran and as tough as it gets, but he’s not an accountable every-possession shooter like Brown or Tatum.

The Celtics have playoff experience, a good coach and plenty of playmakers to win this game; I just don’t think they will. The pace and output of Washington’s offense over the last month has been astounding. After nearly blowing their last game against the Hornets for the 8th seed, the Wizards were able to come back from a double-digit-deficit and win by two possessions, nearly covering their line (-6). Great teams are able to turn on the jets when needed and that’s exactly what the Wizards did 2 days ago. Are the Wizards a great team? That might be going too far, but they have significantly more momentum than the Celtics and I don’t think Boston will be able to keep up with them. Since I think Washington will command the pace of the game I also like the over, though I’ll only put one unit on it since this is a playoff-entry game and nerves are high, which usually favors defense.

MLB Picks and Predictions – May 17, 2021

Aaron Judge celebrating with a teammate after slamming another homerun against the Orioles on May 15.

Well the NBA regular season is officially over I finished at 207-152 overall, which rounds to a 58% win clip on the year in NBA picks. I’m not unhappy about that and now we can shift a little more focus on baseball as the NBA playoffs begin and we approach a long summer of major league action. Here are my picks for Monday:

Reds win (-137), 1.74 units: The streaky Reds head home after a long road trip and I’m sure they’re elated to be back in front of their fans at Great American Ballpark. Cincinnati’s season has been defined by some great offense and shaky pitching, leading them to long winning and losing streaks and plenty of volatility in between. Still a few games behind the Cardinals in the NL Central, the Reds will look to regain some steam after splitting the series with Colorado at Coors Field in their last affair. They send Sonny Gray (3.55 ERA, 1.46 WHIP over 25.1 innings) to the mound today, who has looked sharper in his last few starts. Over his last 3 games (16.4 innings), Gray has only allowed 3 earned runs and he’s struck-out 24 over that same span. He’ll look to demonstrate the same consistency today. The Giants just tied their series in Pittsburgh and now extend their road trip as they head to Cincinnati Monday. San Francisco will send Logan Webb (4.74 ERA, 1.45 WHIP over 38 innings) to the dirt, perhaps their least dependable starter. Webb has had a few great moments, including a relief assignment where he held off the Reds for one inning back in mid-April, but he’s not a pitcher the Giants can count on. The Giants certainly have the bullpen and savvy to overcome Webb’s faults but I like this spot better for Cincinnati. Off a long road trip and finally back at home, with a top 5 offense that should present plenty of problems for Webb, I think Gray can limit runs and Cincinnati can pull away. A run line might be worth a small play too at +145 and I would also lean over the total (8, -110).

Yankees first five -1.5 (even), 1.5 units and Run in First Inning? Yes (+115), 1 unit: This is a big matchup issue for the Rangers early and probably for the length of this contest. Jordan Lyles (RHP, TEX- 6.63 ERA, 1.61 WHIP over 38 innings pitched) has been consistent in one area this year: allowing contact. At 4.75 innings per start, Lyles has allowed an average of 5.75 hits and 3.5 runs every game he’s been at the mound. Even worse for today, he’s allowed 2.13 HR/9 innings. The Yankees’ bats have woken up lately and Aaron Judge is coming off a red hot weekend where he hit 4 homeruns in 3 games at Camden Yards. Gerrit Cole (1.37 ERA, 0.68 WHIP over 52.2 innings) gets the nod for NYY Monday and he’s been the anti-Lyles so far this season. Cole has been a workhorse for the Yankees, flexing a 0.86 ERA away from the Bronx, a velocity upwards of 97 mph on his fastball and limiting hard contact at 0.51 HR/9 innings. The Rangers are a mid-tier offense and an inferior team, limping into tonight with a 6-game losing streak. I expect the Yankees to get hits early and often against a vulnerable Lyles and Cole to have little to no issue limiting a Rangers team that’s averaged 2.83 runs on their 6-game slump. Go Yanks!

Dodgers -1.5 (even), 1.5 units: The Dodgers were on a real freefall at the start of May, losers of 8 out of 10 ballgames and perplexed by their output. But good teams with the immense amount of talent the Dodgers have are tough to keep down. LAD has now won 4 out of their last 5 contests, including 2 straight series wins against Seattle and Miami, and they move on to their first series against their NL West rival in the Diamondbacks at home tonight. The Dodgers bats have come alive again recently, averaging 6.2 runs per game over their last 5 matchups. The Diamondbacks are experiencing different trends. Arizona has lost 4 out of their last 5 games and aren’t scoring, averaging only 3.2 runs per game over that span. Walker Buehler (3.45 ERA, 0.90 WHIP over 44.1 innings) will man the dirt today for LAD in the late slot tonight and he’s a positive regression candidate for me. The 26 year old 5th year starter carries more responsibility with Dustin May out for the season and lately he’s struggled to limit contact, allowing 27 hits and 15 runs over his last 5 outings. Not putrid, but Buehler is better than that and he’ll look to recalibrate his arm and those statistics tonight. He’ll oppose Madison Bumgarner (4.12 ERA, 1.01 WHIP over 43.2 innings), who leads the struggling Diamondbacks into the start of a 7 game road trip. Bumgarner has looked as elite as ever at points this season, though at times he’s struggled to hold a steady command. If the Dodgers’ bats are able to muster some hits early, I think this one could get ugly. I like the spot, momentum, and talent better on LAD’s side tonight so I’ll take a win by margin for even money.

NBA Picks and Predictions – May 16, 2021

James Harden makin' moves on the court.

After a day off due to some family activities at the Farley household, we’re back and we have a full 15 games of NBA action to end the season. Can’t say I’ll have a play on all those games but I do have quite a few. We’re 15-9 this week overall– Onto my picks!

Knicks -12 (-110), 2.5 units: The Knicks will clinch the #4 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs if they win today and Boston is literally sitting out all their stars– Tatum, Kemba, Thompson, Williams. I see no reason not to hammer this line. With the way Boston often competes, or lack thereof, New York could beat a healthy Celtics team by 12+ on a regular day. I’m betting the Knicks’ side and I’m betting a rare 2.5 units on it.

Wizards -5.5 (-110), 1.5 units: The Hornets might play over their heads a little in this one but I don’t think it’ll matter. There’s a huge margin between the best player in this game, Russel Westbrook, and everyone else. Russ will turn up the volume even more than  usual and ensure the Wizards stay ahead. Charlotte, on the other hand, has been struggling lately. This should be their 5th straight loss and unfortunately, I foresee them limping into the playoffs as the 9th or 10th play-in seed.

Rockets +7.5 (-110), 1.5 units and Rockets win (+265), 1 unit: The Hawks know that the Knicks are going to win and secure the 4th seed so they really don’t have much to play for. I can see Atlanta resting their stars, at least for a part of this game, while Houston’s skill players are playing for their future and want to end their season on a high note. Sprinkle some money-line action on this if you really want a nice payday– I think the risk is considerably lower than the line tells us.

Nets -13 (-110), 2 units: Same story, different game. Brooklyn wants to ensure they clinch the #2 seed and they’re at home, while the Cavaliers won’t be able to keep up with the Nets’ stars. Harden looks as sharp as ever and Brooklyn will love any momentum they can gain before the postseason. The New York teams should both win big today.

Blazers -9 and Lakers -9.5 (each -115), 2 units each: Two separate bets although this is probably a very solid parlay. I don’t love that these games are going on at the same time because, in theory, one of these teams could turn it off and decide not to play as hard towards the end. That being said, the Nuggets might sit Jokic and Porter Jr. because, even if they did move up to the 3rd seed, that would mean they could potentially face the Lakers. Now that Lebron’s back the Lakers are starting to show their championship form again so why on earth would Denver want to do that? I think they allow the Blazers to win and sit their stars. The Pelicans are injured and no match for a amped up, healthy LAL squad led by Lebron. This line should be higher. I’m on both favorites.

UFC 262 Free Plays – Sports Betting

Shane Burgos vs Edson Barbosa +115

This should be a great fight in the men’s featherweight class.   We have an up and coming Shane Burgos who is young and hungry at 30 years old vs veteran Edson Barbosa.   Edson is 21-9 and has lost 5 of his last 7 fights while Shane is 13-2 losing only 1 out of his last 4.  Burgos has the much better stats at 7.31 significant strikes per minute to Edson’s 3.98.  Both fighters are mainly stand-up and will both go to the ground when they have to.   Edson has actually dropped down a weight class from lightweight due to his body type and strength.  Edson is 1-1 so far at 145 losing a split decision to Dan Ige.  The big thing for me in this fight is the level of competition both of them have faced.  Edson has faced the best of the best losing to Justin Gaethje and Kabib as well as beating some of the best in Anthony Pettis and Beniel Dariush.  Shane Burgos lost his last fight against Josh Emmit and his best win was only agaist Makwan Amirkhani whome Barbosa also won.  I am going to take experience over youth here being that there is only 5 years that separate these 2 and I also get + money.

Edson Barbosa +115 – 3 stars

Katlyn Chookagian vs Viviane Araujo +120

This is an interesting fight here because the more experienced contender is actually younger.   Katlyn is 15-4 at 32 years old while Viviane is 10-2 at 34.  Looking at how these fighers match up, the first thing that comes to mind is that this fight is going the distance.   Viviane has a total of 5 fights in the UFC with her last 4 going to decision while Katlyn has went to a decision 14 times out of her 19 fights.  Twelve of Katlyn’s wins are by decision and her only losses have been against the best in the flyweight class.  Both fighters share losses to Jessica Eye but you can clearly see that Katlyn has fought against much better competition with losses to fighters like Valentiva Shevchenko and wins against Jennifer Maia and Joanne Calderwood.  I think experience plays a big part here but I also think that Viviane will go the distance being that her only loss by KO or Submission was back in 2017.  Taking Chookagian to win by points/decision.

Katlyn Chookagian +100 – 1 star

Charles Oliveira vs Michael Chandler +110

Ok, I have finally made a decision on this fight.   Michael Chandler was certainly a head-scratcher to me seeing how long he fought in the Bellator without moving to the UFC as well as some of his losses but it all makes more sense to me after watching a few of his fights.   Chandler’s loss to Patricio Freire in 2019 was certainly an unjust one.  Chandler got hit in the head and went down due to his own momentum more than being dazed and the ref stopped that fight for no reason whatsoever.  Chandler’s next loss to Brent Primus in 2017 was due to a doctor stoppage and we have to go way back to 2014 when he was just learning to fight for his other 3 let downs.  I watched Chandler beat Dan Hooker with ease and he looked like he was ready to make the next step.  Charles Oliveira on the other hand is certainly a great fighter but he seemed to have caught some of his best opponents when they were out of their prime, such as Tony Ferguson and Nick Lentz.   I see a knockout brewing here and I think Chandler can win this one early.

The 2021 Preakness Stakes – Horse Racing

After all of the fun and controversy that we had this week over the Baffert horses, It is finally time to get into this race.   Not surprisingly, both Baffert horses are favored here and the question in everyone’s minds is will they be able to live up to these numbers.  Some people feel that the horses were on performance enhancing drugs previously and they are now overpriced and some people think that the potential drug use didn’t matter much and the prices might have some value.  Some people actually think the horses might be tainted in today’s race as well.  For me, I have to think that it is impossible to tell and will jump on the value with Medina spirit who is currently going off around 3-1 instead of the 9-5 opening price.   The horse that I think could win this race and have some value is the 4 horse Crowded Trade.   This horse has a nice 95 Beyer speed figure from the Gotham and he should be able to get this distance according to his pedigree.   I think that the 5, 6 and 10 horses could also make some noise so I will play the prices while keying in on the 3 and the 4.  Best of luck everyone!

MLB 5/15/21 Saturday Super Plays – Sports Betting

San Francisco vs Pittsburgh +108 O/U 7.5

The Giants blew it last night and they know it.   Being up 1-0 for most of the game, only to blow it in the 9th and force extra innings spelled disaster for this team.  Lets take a look at the pitching matchup today.  John Cueto will be taking the mound today with a very nice 3.15 FIP and a 3.52 ERA over 23 innings this year.  Lefty Tyler Anderson will be pitching for the pirates who himself has a great 3.13 FIP and a 3.05 ERA.  What I like about the Giants here is that they were number 3 last year vs left handed pitching at a 127 wRC+ and a solid .358 wOBA and this year they are a modest 16th.  Johnny Cueto has a lifetime record of 21-4 vs the Pirates with an ERA of 2.13.  Pittsburgh still has batting problems tied for dead last in wRC+.   Gonna go with the vet Cueto with the short number on the road.

San Francisco -119 – 2.5 stars

St. Louis vs San Diego -128 O/U 7

Do we trust the Padres without Tatis?   I am not totally sure but I do know that Cardinal’s pitcher Adam Wainwright hasn’t exactly been amazing as of late sporting a 4.02 FIP.  That is pretty average if you ask me.  Chris Paddack is pitching for the Padres and he has taking a big step forward from last year’s FIP of 5.02 down to 3.03 so far this year over 26 innings.   I think his true capabilities are somewhere in the middle.   I think there is some positive regression in store for the Padres run scoring capabilities being that they have the 3rd most runners left on base.   I like how they have been hitting lately in 4 of their last 5 games with 5 or more runs.   I still do not completely trust Chris Paddack but I can see this game going over the total with the wind blowing out to left field.
