NHL Preview & Picks – January 19th, 2022

Like most Wednesdays, there’s only a few games happening in the NHL. Despite the limited selection, there is some pretty good matchups.

Another Episode of Expected Bet For will drop today (Wednesday) with a great guest. We’ll breakdown the games happening on Thursday January 20th and offer some more insight into the NHL gambling world.

As always, I’ll be grading my bets from the night before. There was no article yesterday, but I did tweet out two picks so be sure to follow me on Twitter so you don’t miss anything. We went 2-0 hitting on both underdogs.

  1. Carolina Hurricanes ml (+115)
    1. While I didn’t take the overnight line at +110, I did get some CLV as bets came in late on Boston. The Carolina Hurricanes are one of the most well rounded teams in the NHL. I understand that the Bruins have been great recently but at + money they’re almost an auto bet every time. GRADE: B+
  2. Vancouver Canucks ml (+110)
    1. Well thank you to Thatcher Demko who won this game for the Canucks. Vancouver was outscored in xG 2.73 to NSH’s 3.0. To be honest, we shouldn’t have won this game and it wasn’t a great bet looking back at it. GRADE: B-

Toronto Maple Leafs @ New York Rangers

  • Time: 7:30 PM ET
  • TV Coverage: ESPN+
  • Toronto Maple Leafs: 24-9-3, 3rd Atlantic (10-5-2 Away)
  • New York Rangers: 25-10-4, 1st Metropolitan (10-3-2 Home)
Team Opening ML Current ML Spread Total
Toronto Maple Leafs -147 -160 -1.5 (+155) o5.5 (-120)
New York Rangers +120 +140 +1.5 (-175) u5.5 (+100)

Trends:

  • Toronto are 6-2 SU in their last 8 games.
  • The total has gone OVER in 10 of Toronto’s last 14 games.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 6 of NY Rangers’ last 7 games.
  • NY Rangers are 6-2 SU in their last 8 games.

Preview:

These teams have faced off twice this year. The Rangers stole the first game on the road in a 2-1 OT victory back in October. Then, Toronto evened the series beating the Rangers 2-1 in November.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Coming out of the Christmas break the Leafs have looked much better, despite dropping two games. Their first loss came at the hands of the Colorado Avalanche in OT back on January 8th. Then a shocking loss to the Arizona Coyotes on January 12th, where they had an xG of 3.88 to Arizona’s 1.87.

This will be the Leafs first game in a few days, as their game against New Jersey was postponed on the 17th. After tonight’s game against the Rangers, they’ll stay in New York to take on the Islanders Saturday night.

As of late Toronto’s offense has found their stride, averaging 4.5 Goals For Per Game which is much better than their season average of 3.39. Overall, Toronto hasn’t been great on the year with a -10.35 Goals For Above Expected. However, they did have some injury problems in the beginning portion of the season leaving some gaps in their lineup up front. Now they have all of their superstars back on the ice and look much better. The Maple Leafs boast the 2nd best Power Play in the league converting at a rate of 29.7%. Toronto does generate a ton of scoring chances and should again tonight based on the shot differential between these teams. They are going to be without Nick Ritchie and Indrej Kase who remain in Covid-19 protocols.

In terms of their defense, Toronto has also been much better as of late with the only real outlier coming in their last game against St. Louis where they allowed 5. Colorado and the Golden Knights also put up 5 and 3 respectively but are very good offense teams so it’s hard count that against them. On the year Toronto is allowing an average of 2.56 Goals Against with a -7.44 Goals Against Above Expected. Their Penalty Kill currently ranks 7th and should be in for a test tonight against a strong Rangers Power Play.

Jack Campbell is expected to get the start for the Maple Leafs. He’s been great for them this year with a +15.2 Goals Saved Above Expected (GSAx). However, he has allowed 3 or more goals in his last three starts.

New York Rangers

Just like the Leafs, the Rangers have been playing great hockey since the break with a 6-3 record. Their three losses all came on the road and against some pretty solid teams including Florida, Vegas, and Los Angeles.

The Rangers are currently in 1st place in the Metropolitan division but most likely wont be there for long as Carolina has several games in hand on them and are only two points back. This isn’t a shot at the Rangers by any means but they aren’t the best team in that division and will probably be looking at a Wild Card spot come playoffs.

New York hasn’t been great offensively this year only averaging 2.85 Goals For. They do have a +0.24 Goals For Above Expected which is due to their lack of chances created. The Rangers are able to capitalize on the chances they create at a rate barely above expected. However, the problem is they don’t create enough chances to compete against these high scoring teams. Looking back at their schedule since November, they haven’t won a game where an opponent has scored more than 4 goals. Listen, I get that 4 is a lot to score, but they rely on their defense and goalie to keep them in games.

Speaking of their defense, they have one of the best in the NHL which is the main reason for their success. They have the 2nd best Goals Against averaging only 2.44 per game. The Rangers also have the 3rd best Penalty Kill Percentage at 85.6 %. Their defense will have to find a way to shut down Toronto’s high powered offense if they want to have a chance in this game. The good news for New York is that they are allowing less Goals at Home, however, the bad news is Toronto is averaging more Goals For on the road.

The main component of the Rangers success tonight will depend on their netminder, Igor Shesterkin. He’s expected to get the nod tonight in net and enters this matchup with the best GSAx in the NHL, +20.7. If he’s on, the Rangers have a shot, if not, Toronto wins this game. It’s truly as simple as that.

Picks:

  • NYR/ TOR UNDER 5.5 (+100)
    • So the line is set at 5.5 which automatically tells me that Vegas thinks this game is going under. The majority of the Leafs games have been set at 6.0/6.5 this year. People may think that this is great value with the total being set so low but lets look at the Rangers who have their total constantly set at 5.5/6.0. Based off the line set, it looks like the Rangers will win and the game will go under. Both of the previous matchups have also gone under which does concern me slightly but regardless I think this games stays under based on what the line is telling us.

Other Plays for Tonight:

  • COLORADO AVALANCHE TEAM TOTAL OVER 3.5 (-120)
    • The Avalanche have gone over 3.5 Goals For in their past 9 games. Their offense clicking on all cylinders right now and face an Anaheim team that has allowed 4 or more goals in 6 of their last 7. These teams have faced off twice already this season and Colorado has gone over this number in both of those games.

Best of luck, and as always you can find me on Twitter @GatorBetting and Instagram @Gator_Sports_Betting.

The American Express – Preview & Picks

At this point, I kind of feel bad for Russell Henley. However, the narrative of him being a choke artist continues as he led the tournament the whole way and yet found a way to lose. Hideki Matsuyama was great on Sunday and was able to match Henley for the lead forcing a playoff. Matsuyama then hit an unbelievable second shot from 277 yards to capture the win at the Sony Open.

Our guy Kevin Kisner finished T3 and would have had a shot if it wasn’t for the first round. He shot a 68 on Thursday only going 2 under which put him out of contention especially given the birdie-fest that did ensue. He started the final round birdieing his first three holes and gave us a brief glimpse of hope before cooling off on the back nine.

We now head to Southern California for the American Express which is a very unique event. The field for this event isn’t as strong as last weeks Sony Open but we still do have some big names headlining the event. While the length is similar, it won’t put as much emphasis on driving accuracy and will put more on putting. One key component that will remain the same will be the ability to score, as this week as Birdie to Bogey ratio remains a key factor.

I breakdown the tournament format, field, and my picks below so lets get into it.

Course/ Tournament Overview:

This is a unique tournament for several reasons but let’s start with the obvious, the 3 course rotation. The players will play a different course for the first three days and will rotate between the PGA West Stadium Course, the Nicklaus Tournament Course, and the La Quinta Country Club Course. The PGA West facility will host three of the four rounds as the Stadium Course and Nicklaus Tournament Course are both on the grounds. La Quinta Country Club is roughly a 5 mile drive from that facility and will be the only travel required for players during this event.

Given that the first three days are at different courses, the first and lone cut for the event will be made after 54 Holes and not the typical 36 Holes. Last year, the event only took place at just two courses, so the cut was made after 36 which has shewed some cut line data. The historical cut line for this event has been around -9 after 54 Holes.

Another interesting variation is the incorporation of the Pro-Am structure. This will be the first event “post” Covid that we will have seen this. For the first three rounds, each pro will be paired up with an amateur. So in the groupings for the first three days will feature two pros and two amateurs.

Course Guides/ Scorecard:

As previously mentioned, this is a unique format with three courses coming into play. Another added difficulty this week is that we only have Strokes Gained data for one of the courses, the PGA West Stadium course. That’s the only course that we’ll see twice so it’ll be the main point of emphasis this week but should be taken with a gain of salt.

Lets start with the Nicklaus Tournament Course, it’s a Par 72 that’s roughly 7,147 yards in length. As seen by the yardage, it is one of the shortest courses on Tour ranking 49th out of 54. It’s also one of the easiest courses on the Tour ranking 49/54.

La Quinta is arguably, if you can even say that given the ranking, the easiest course on Tour ranking 54/54. It’s a Par 72 that’s 7,060 yards which is extremely short. If any player wants to have a chance this week, they’ll need to take advantage of all the birdie opportunities this course offers. If you’re looking at placing a FRL bet, I would highly advise you take a look and make sure that they’re starting on this course. To see the updated tee times, you can click this link.

Lastly, lets look at the PGA West Stadium course which is the host course for the week. It’s a Par 72 that’s roughly 7,158 yards in length. This is the most difficult course that these players will face ranking 40th out of 54 courses. In addition to difficulty, PGA West is also the longest course of the three.

The the three possible course rotations will be as follows:

  • R1: PGA West Stadium -> R2: La Quinta -> R3: Nicklaus Tournament
  • R1: La Quinta -> R2: Nicklaus Tournament -> R3: PGA West Stadium
  • R1: Nicklaus Tournament -> R2: PGA West Stadium -> R3: La Quinta

The Field/ Odds:

The field for this weeks event is headlined by world No. 1 Jon Rahm who currently sits at 6-1 (+600) to win this event. Rahm has played in this event three times prior and won the American Express back in 2018.

Behind Rahm in terms of odds, sits Patrick Cantlay who won the Fed Ex Cup last season. He’s listed at 9-1 (+900) on most books and has actually done very well at this event in the past. Last season he shot a course record 61 on the final day but fell short to Si Woo Kim and placed 2nd. He didn’t play here in 2020 but finished 9th in 2019.

Si Woo Kim who, as previously mentioned, won this event last year is currently listed at 50-1 (+5000).

Other “horses for the course” this week will most likely be Adam Hadwin, Sungjae Im, Abraham Ancer, and Michael Thompson.

Adam Hadwin is currently listed at 80-1 (+8000). He has played in this event six times and has finished 48-6-2-3-2-32. Hadwin hasn’t played since the RSM Classic back in November but his event history will be hard to ignore. He did play well during the fall swing only missing one cut in seven events. However, he only cracked the Top 40 once finishing T6 at the Shriners.

Sungjae Im is currently listed at 22-1 (+2200). He’ll undoubtedly a popular play this week given his event history. He’s played in this event three times and has finished 12-10-12. So far this season he has played great with the only outlier coming last week in the Sony Open where he missed the cut. During the fall swing he won the Shriner’s Children Open and finished Top 10 at the CJ Cup @ Summit and the Sentry Tournament of Champions. It’ll be interesting to see how he rebounds this week.

Abraham Ancer is currently listed at 25-1 (+2500). He has finished 2-5 in his last two starts at the American Express. Ancer is coming off a MC at the Sony but has been playing well besides that. His best finish of the fall swing comes at the WWT at Mayakoba where he finished T7.

Michael Thompson is currently listed at 80-1 (+8000). He has played in this event six times before and has found his form at this event as of late. In 2019 he finished 9th and in 2021 he finished 5th. He’s a dark horse for sure here but is coming off a 5th place finish in the Sony Open and looks to be in great form not missing a cut in any event this season.

Other former winners who are in the event include; Andrew Landry (150-1), Adam Long (160-1), Hudson Swafford (250-1), Jason Dufner (350-1), Bill Haas (750-1), Patrick Reed (40-1), Brian Gay (650-1), Mark Wilson (1000-1), Jhonattan Vegas (80-1), Pat Perez (250-1), and Phil Mickelson (125-1).

Notable Withdraws Include: Charley Hoffman (back), Martin Laird

    • Price: 66-1

Picks (Outright):

  • Patrick Cantlay (+900) – DraftKings
    • Risk: 0.90 to win 8.1 Units

Well any doubts of Cantlay’s form was certainly put to rest as he finished 4th in the Sentry Tournament of Champions two weeks ago shooting a final round 61. Cantlay is a flat out assassin when it comes to his irons. Having the amateurs in the field almost gives him even more of an advantage as the pin placement will be slightly easier on the first three days. He has a great track record here finishing 2nd in 2021 and 9th in 2020. Historically he also ranks near the top in terms of SG on Short Courses and SG on Western Courses. He already holds the course record for lowest round so he really only has one thing left to do which is to win.

  • Matthew Wolff (+3100) – FanDuel
    • Risk 0.26 to win 8.06 Units

Matthew Wolff enters the American Express in tremendous form. While he is coming off a bit of a layoff since his last tournament, I don’t expect much to chance from the Oklahoma State grad. During the fall swing he finished T11-T5-2-T17 with that 2nd place coming at the Shiners Children Open. The Shriners took place at TPC Summerlin which is a comparable course for this weeks event. Wolff has played in this event two times prior and is trending in the right direction finishing 61 in 2020 and 40 in 2021. He’s seen the course layout and should be more familiar this time around. In terms of statistics he ranks 1st on Tour in Scoring Average, 3rd in SG: Total, and 5th in SG: Putting.

Total Risk on Outrights: 1.16 Units

Picks (Top 20):

  • Seamus Powers (+188) – Caesars
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.88 Units

What a run it has been for Seamus Powers as of late. He’s finally broken into the Top 50 of the WGR and is coming off a T3 finish at the Sony Open. He’s been a Top 20 machine this year with the following results, T3-T15-T4-MC-T11-T12. Power’s hasn’t played in his event the past two years but finished 21 in 2017 and 11 in 2018. He’s currently 35th on Tour in Birdie or Better % and is Top 15 in Par 4 and Par 5 Scoring.

Total Risk on Top 20: 1.00 Units

Picks (Top 40):

  • KH Lee (+160) – Caesars
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.60 Units

KH Lee has made the Top 40, in 5 of his last 6 events. His only week outside the Top 40 was last week at the Sony Open where he finished T48. In his last two outings at the American Express he finished  21-32. KH Lee has been in great form as of late and given his event history, he seems like a great play at + money to make the Top 40. Besides his recent form and event history, he ranks well in SG: Off the Tee and GIR % both of which are important this week.

  • Andrew Putnam (+185) – Caesars
    • Risk: 1.00 to win 1.85 Units

Andrew Putnam has finished inside the Top 40 in his last four appearances at the American Express (17-34-10-21). He’s coming off a 27th place finish at the Sony Open last week and has only missed the cut twice in his last eight tournaments. Besides those two MC, he has finished inside the Top 40 in 4 of those eight events, even finishing 41 in one of them. Putnam has played well at the event in the past and looks to be in good enough form to continue that trend.

Total Risk on Top 40: 2.00 Units

Total Risk on the American Express : 4.16 Units

*CBB(1u): Duke/Florida State UNDER 145(-110)–8 PM CT

Duke has looked pretty solid through their first 5 conference games, but in my opinion, this is a major step up in competition. Unlike many other teams who Duke matches up with, Florida State has the pure talent and athleticism to go toe-to-toe with the Blue Devils. Mainly, the Seminoles play a really solid brand of defense, ranking 35th in defensive efficiency according to KenPom. While Duke has a top 10-15 offense in the country, their opponents’ average defensive efficiency rating up to this point is just 247th. That said, Duke plays a pretty solid brand of defense themselves. While Florida State has talent, this offense has been very mediocre across the board this season. The ‘Noles run at a pretty average pace; while Duke can be inclined to up the tempo at times, I don’t think they will choose that course of action in a competitive road conference game. All things considered, this total is too high for my liking. I think Florida State keeps this competitive, and the way they do that is by getting stops on the defensive end of the floor. I like the Under in this one.

January 18th CBB Premium Play

*CBB(1u): Davidson/VCU UNDER 133(-110)–6 PM CT

VCU is truly one of the weirdest teams in all of College Basketball. The Rams arguably have one of the best defenses in the country(#2 in KenPom), yet their offense is absolutely putrid. Scoring just 62.7 PPG this season, shooting just 43% from the floor, and turning the ball over upwards of 15 times per game, this offense ranks 269th in the country. Davidson’s defense is not great, but the one thing the Wildcats will contribute to this play is their slow pace(Wildcats run at the 318th fastest pace in the country). Davidson’s offense has performed well this season, but then again they haven’t faced a defense as good as this VCU’s, not to mention in a road conference game. In fact, the average defensive efficiency rating of Davidson’s opponents this season is just 245th. When you combine how these teams match up and then add VCU’s need to bounce back from last week’s St. Bonaventure loss, I think we’ll see a low-scoring game tonight. I’d endorse this play down to 131.5.

College Basketball Tuesday 2-pack – Sports Betting

Wisconsin vs Northwestern +2.5 O/U 140

This is gonna to be a good game to watch between two teams fighting for position in the Big 10.   Wisconsin is that team that has surprised everyone this year with more of an offensive focus rather than a slow methodical game.   Part of that reason is that they have the height to rebound some of their misses, and of course, they have the 7th ranked player in the nation in Johnny Davis who averages over 21 points per game.   Northwestern on the other hand is a better team than they were last year, and that huge win vs Michigan State really proves it, but now they are in a bit of a grand salami sandwich spot here between State and Purdue.   Northwestern has looked good partly because of their schedule strength ranking 106th in the nation and 354th in non-conference.   Wisconsin’s schedule ranks 5th in the nation and 87th in the non-conference.   Both teams are great at not turning the ball over, but Northwestern has not been a good home team only ranking 335th on Haslametrics at home, and 0-4 ATS in their last four home games.  Wisconsin is 4-0 in their last four games as a favorite and 6-0 their last six.   The Badgers are 5-0-1 in their last six games vs the Wildcats.  Lastly, Northwestern’s best player in Pete Nance is a game-time decision and he is trending more as an OUT with an ankle sprain that hindered him out last game.   I have to go with Bucky here as the short favorite.

Wisconsin -2.5 – 2 stars

Bonus Play:   Bellarmine -7.5 – 1.5 stars.   Their stats are skewed some due to the fact that they were missing Ethan Claycomb for about 6 games.   North Alabama is terrible and are in the bottom 340 in offensive efficiency.  They also rank top 65 in pace.  This means that they play fast meaning that they lose even faster.

Premiums, 1.18

Hi Good People!

Another winning day in the NBA (3-1) for +3.9 units, and the Rams hit for us. I’ll be on the road after today for the remainder of the week, so please be patient with me. I usually wake up early as hell anyway so I doubt you’ll get the picks too much later.
So, we’re 36-14 (72%) over the last 3 weeks in NBA Picks… self praise stinks but that’s absurd. Please spread the word when you can! Today’s slate features only 2 NBA games and I would be misleading you if I gave you a bet on either of them. Neither have any real line value. Instead, I have a few CBB plays and a few lookahead NFL plays, too!
CBB:
  • Syracuse -3.5 *
  • Utah St/Fresno St under 130 *
NFL Lookahead (all leans for now):
  • Bengals +3.5
  • 49ers +5.5
  • Bucs -3
  • Bills ML

883 Mercer -3.5 (-110)** at 884 The Citadel
Citadel’s fast pace makes them dangerous as a dog for sure, but we have two teams headed in different directions as Mercer has been solid in conference play while The Citadel has shown to be one of the weaker teams in the SoCon. Mercer comes in winning 3 of L4 in conference while The Citadel is losers of L3 of 4. Mercer has dominated this series winning both matchups last season by 20 or more points. Mercer’s size should give them the advantage in this one and be the key to slowing down this Citadel squad. Four points is not a huge ask for a team needing wins in Mercer after a bad start to the season, give me Mercer laying the points.

*NBA(1u): Heat -3(-110) vs Raptors–6:40 PM CT

The Raptors have played really good basketball in the month of January, but given how they’ve approached this road trip, I think this is the spot we start to see the wheels fall off. This will be the 3rd game in 4 nights for Toronto after playing road games in Detroit and Milwaukee. Pascal Siakam and Fred VanVleet played 40 minutes each in both of those games; OG Anunoby played 36 and 39 minutes, respectively. To push your starters that hard and then pair that with a 3rd game in 4 nights WITH travel is simply not a sustainable recipe for success. Miami is 1-1 on their current homestand, and while this is a 3rd game in 4 nights for them, there has been no travel involved for the Heat. I would’ve loved to have Kyle Lowry in tonight, but I think the Heat have enough guard depth to compensate for this game. This is a clear opportunity to fade Toronto; I’ll lay the short number with Miami.
